Weekender Special Prize: What Would Gareth Hobson Do (WWGHD)

by 0

The prize: An Easton Haven stem and Carbon Bar to bling any bike from an All Mountain monster to a XC whippet.

Sponsored by: 18 Bikes, Hope & Paul Testa Architecture, Sheffield

What for: Last year Gareth Hobson was commended for his outstanding effort having vomited on the finish line having given the XC race some real beans. Appropriately, this spot prize will be awarded to the competitor who shows the most outstanding effort over the weekend.

Gareth giving it the beans on the DH at last year's Weekender

Background: Gareth Hobson was a keen and gifted mountain biker, climber, teacher all round nice guy and friend. Sadly in November he died following a climbing accident whilst on a trip of a lifetime in America with his wife Julia.

Gareth’s sense of adventure, humour and fun meant that everyone seems to have great memories and stories to share about him. Gareth was one of those rare friends for life that one might be lucky enough to meet and keep.

It has been inevitable to dwell on the incomprehensible nature of his accident, how someone so full of life and joy, having the time of his life with the love of his life could be taken from us.

Despite this though, the loss of Gareth has inspired those that knew him to adopt a more positive frame of mind.

From deciding whether to have more pudding, to talking yourself into doing some exercise when you just don’t feel like it, or trying another attempt at “that drop”, just ask yourself – WWGHD? What Would Gareth Hobson Do?

I have been a writer for nigh on 20 years, a photographer for 25 years and a mountain biker for 30 years. I have written countless magazine and website features and route guides for the UK mountain bike press, most notably for the esteemed and highly regarded Singletrackworld. Although I am a Lancastrian, I freely admit that West Yorkshire is my favourite place to ride. Rarely a week goes by without me riding and exploring the South Pennines.
