Those of us with fat head tubes have traditionally only had two choices when it came to 1.5-into-1 1/8th headsets: cheap and nasty ball-bearing ones that weigh a ton and go rusty after about three rides, or very expensive ones that are okay.
Praise be to Hope for finally spotting the gap in the market and making this headset.
It’s perfect. 113g, minimal stack height (11mm), DIY-replaceable cartridge bearings, split crown race, acceptable price tag. Like all their headsets it even comes with a Hope Hed Doctor – (although I still prefer to use a standard star fangled nut).
Overall: If you’re in the market for a Stepdown headset there is no better option.

I’m running one of these on my Tracer VP and it does the job perfectly. Split crown race makes changing forks really easy.
Thanks God for that, will get one soon.
Likewise.
This is by far not the first affordable high quality headset of its kind! Syntace offers a 1.5/-1 1/8 headset with the bit bulky name “SUPERSPIN TRUE INTEGRATION” for a couple of years. And it is 99g at €69. Check out http://www.syntace.de. They unfortunately don’t show it on their English website.
