The CTC’s Awards and Recruitment Committee gave a Highly Commended Award to Richard Abbott for his contribution to cycling in his region.

Richard Abbott – Aston Hill Mountain Bikers – South East Region

Richard became Chairman of Aston Hill Mountain Bikers in 2007 and has worked tirelessly to re-open Aston Hill and get the popular southern mountain bike venue back on track. Despite many people’s perception, Richard has put hours of unpaid volunteer time into Aston Hill and Aston Hill Mountain Bike Club.

Taking on everything from blowing the leaves from the trails through to running the facility every weekend and organising events, Richard has put hours of his time into the Hill. Aston Hill enables thousands of mountain bikers across the South to experience the thrills of mountain biking, regardless of age or experience; without Richard’s passion for mountain biking and tireless efforts, one of the south’s premier mountain bike facilities would have been lost.

I have been a writer for nigh on 20 years, a photographer for 25 years and a mountain biker for 30 years. I have written countless magazine and website features and route guides for the UK mountain bike press, most notably for the esteemed and highly regarded Singletrackworld. Although I am a Lancastrian, I freely admit that West Yorkshire is my favourite place to ride. Rarely a week goes by without me riding and exploring the South Pennines.

Awesome work Richard and keep the love flowing. If anyone in the SE hasn’t gone to Aston Hill they’re seriously missing out, 5 quid can’t buy that much fun and adrenaline re-fueling anywhere else.

    Slippy chalk and root-tastic.

yeah, aston hill hasnt ever been as good. Its nice to see changes being made to the tracks, even if my favourite part of aston hill is now no longer…

Having seen Rich at work, I think he absolutely deserves it. He’s put an awful lot of unpaid time and some of his own funds into not only keeping the Hill going, but making it better. 5 quid is money well spent on some of the techiest riding in the home counties.

Lyons – what was your favourite part?

Yeah Lyons – was it the Burger Van???

Ian’s dad mike used to be one of my favourite parts of Aston Hill.
