want to re-proof my jackets in time for winter (or today) and wandered what the best stuff was to use. any suggestions??

Grangers or Nikwax, Grangers arguably slightly better, but they both work and neither need to be heat treated. You might get away with washing the jackets in a technical cleaner - same brands both do them - and then either ironing carefully or tumble-drying according to the care instructions to revive the original water repellent treatment. If that doesn't work - water should bead and run off the outside of the jacket - use a reproofing spray.

Grangers if you want to decrease the breathabilty (is that a word?) of your jacket, get cancer and pollute the planet.
Nikwax if you want to restore the DWR treatment on your jacket without reducing breathabilty (it must now be a word as I've used it twice) by using a product that is manufactured in the UK from nice, green, friendly chemicals.

Why do you think that Grangers DWR decreases breathability? It's pretty much the same as the treatment originally applied to the fabric.
Not saying Nikwax isn't impressively environmentally-aware btw, but as far as I know, both companies manufacture in the UK.

Nikwax, grangers etc only replenise the dwr they dont' re-waterproof.

You've never read the instructions on grangers then? It must be heat treated to work!

Breathability comes from the fabric and has nothing to do with the treatment, unless its wax or wax based.

The latest Grangers 30˚DWR doesn't need to be heat activated, apart from the two-in-one combined wash and reproofer. It used to the case that it did, but it isn't now. That's why I mentioned it.
Why the cheap jibe about reading the instructions?

Grangers use Flurocarbons. Exposure to liquid Flurocarbons, even in small doses, has been proven to develop cancerous cells.
I wouldn't be surprised if that's the reason why Grangers have introduced the 30c product as it seems a copy of Nikwax. plenty of reading on the matterUse Grangers at your peril!!!!!

Thanx for all the info on this, will look em both up today and read about them.
there seems to be a general split down the middle with these 2 makes. between my jackets and my wifes, we have 5 jackets to do so looking for something quite easy and not too confusing to use (if that makes sense) unless they can be done in bulk, but will find all this out later
