   Want to spend £2k on a family car. Thinking probably estate and pref diesel (although I recognise that I might get more for a petrol). Thinking maybe Volvo V70, BMW 5 series touring Merc E class est (possibly a bit too big).

   What else should be on the list?

   Go for the Merc or BMW although V70 can be found cheaper.

   BMW 5 series with 6 cylinder engine FSH and I got mine cheap and LPG'd and I'm well happy.

   Depends how you feel about them but have a look at either MG ZTT or Rover 75 tourer diesels , both use a BMW diesel engine in a slightly de-tuned version. You can get a lot of car for your £.
