I was considering getting a new (well, 2nd hand) hardtail. Hadn't really considered big wheels until now. In my head 29ers are good on the rolling singletrack and that, but are they up to much on techy trails, stuff like lakeland passes? Also, would they be a lot harder to carry than a 26er do you guys think? Sorry for the Hijack btw...

How do the Orange owners find there full sussers? Still deciding if I should take the step into the realms of rear suspension. Was thinking maybe a five or a Heckler. Was also considering a Meta 5.5, how does yours fit you sheffield43?

6'5"
19" Rocky Mountain Element (frame too small really but a great bike and it was silly cheap)
20" Kona Kilauea (95)
20" InbredAll with proper 'not trying too hard' 26" wheels
for the simple reason that for my riding I much prefer the feel of the bike. Still on the lookout for a 29er I like though so hoping to have a go on a few at SSEC.And I still don't understand why (other than for purely cosmetic proportional reasons) people think that a 29er wheel is any better for a tall rider. 29er riders seem at pains to point out that the contact points are all the same and that the wheelbase isn't longer to any great extent so if a 29er is supposedly superior for tall riders, why aren't you queing up for 32ers and even 36ers?

6'6" with long legs.
XL Ibis Mojo - both trail bikes have long seatposts
XL Commencal Meta
21" Stumpjumper HT - bigger than the other 2, gets used for commuting/road rides tooI'm yet to try a 29er properly, but very keen to replace the Stumpy with one this year I think ('03 Stumpy). Curiously I tried a Niner hardtail at Bikeradar's demo day last year, it was fairly muddy and the tyres* seemed VERY keen to fire out sideways. Since then I've not really given it much of a chance. There's one little rocky loose climb on the trail which I must say was easier on that bike than anything else I've ridden though!
* WTB Wolverine 29 if I recall correctly, racing tyres which seem equally fast sideways as they were forwards.

XL Heckler
21" 1997 P7
19" 2010 P7 - I'm a convert to smaller frames after taking the advice of my LBS. Most of my riding is around 2-3 hour mark though, so hardly any all day epics. Makes the Heckler feel like a long, slow boat.Posted 1 year ago # -

I would like to try a 29er but i'm afraid i'll like them and i can't afford a new bike at the moment!
