Wednesday competition - estimated bills - whats the biggest discrepancy?

Where on earth do the power companies get their figures for estimated bills? Do they literally pull them out of the air?

I've just had an estimated bill from Scottish Power. It was staggering. To use that amount of gas I'd have to cremating bodies or running a waste incinerator.

They reckon I owe them £470. A quick look on my online account shows I'm £81 in credit. So, for 3 months gas supply that makes a discrepancy of £551!!!

Can anyone better that? Or answer where the hell they get these figures from?

yes I once got a quote for some bauhaus graphic work for £50 cost me £3000 in the end but boy did he have a withering look when I complained

One of my utility providers who I prefer not to name but lets just say they are British and they work with Gas once wanted more per month direct debit than my three month bill was . When i challenged them they refused to alter it so I just cancelled the direct debit and ignored their calls and letters and then just paid the bill.

I have been paying by standing order and not looking at the bills. I just discovered we were £750 in credit! Standing order reduced from £120 to £66 and a cheque sent to us

I had similar with British Gas. I knew I was £400 in credit after 6 months, called them up, asked for a refund and a change to the monthly amount, and the computer said I should pay them an extra tenner a month.

I now just pay the bill when it arrives.

My NPower DD went from £44/month to $199/month based on their estimated bill. When I checked, I'd used less than the previous year for gas and leccy, so I complained and asked them to amend it. They refused, so I said I'd go back to BG. They then quickly changed their mind and reverted to £44/m.

I'm not in the business of acting as a bank to my utility provider.

You have to be really insistant and refuse to take no for an answer, and threaten to leave. They'll sort it in the end, believe me.

Silly me, I tried to use a combination of logic and incredulity to get my way, which didn't work since the person on the other end was a muppet.

For the 1st 1/4 in the house I'm in now, when it was basically gutted and being restored so no power used except for tools, I had an estimated bill from edf of just under 6k. Actual amount used was less than 100quid.
