Why because I've driven Diesels now for years and none of them driving hard have gone as low mid thirties and none certainly much below mid 40s. You examples were where used to try and wind you case by giving the best of your Golf and the worst of a Diesel not the average of both. The modern Diesels just get better and better economy with the add bonus of some performance.
I also know someone who switched from MkV Golf GTi to a Diesel because the GTi cost way too much to run.

Many years ago I was forced to have a diesel by the Company Car Manager, on account of how many miles I did. I had a Xantia TD; it did 40mpg no matter how you drove it, fast or slow. Covered 160k in 4 years on just normal servicing with just one breakdown at 100k (£200 for a suspension sphere).
I use to get real pissed off that the office 'boys/girls' drove around in petrol Mercs/Beemers/Audis - because they did low mileage - so purely on principle, I've never had a diesel since, but a diet of +2.0 petrols, mainly V's.
My current car manages 400 miles on a tank, unfortunately its a 20 gallon tank..., but boy is it fast/smooth/quiet/peaceful/pleasant/calming etc.
I have to admit I am looking at Passats as we are going down to one car next year. My Mrs tdi Polo has to go and as my Octavia vRS isn't amazingly economical we need a boring family mobile. We looked at Octavias but they seem to be holding their cash????? Whereas you can get some right bargain 130 tdi Passats.
get an Audi, its a rebadged Skoda but cheaper 
It's madness that Skodas are holding their money???? I bought my 1st Octavia vRS in 2003 when they were still a joke. It's bonkers I tell thee!!! I saw a 2005 1st Gen vRS going for £6995 at a dealers!!!!! I almost fell over.
Well I get 23 MPG in my Alfa 166. And I get 31 MPG in my Fiat Bravo 150 T-Jet.
Reckon I could better these figures if I did a bit more motorway driving though
re earlier posts re Golf GTi. I just sold mine, which I had from new, 2.5yrs and 33K miles - the average fuel economy over the whole time I had it was 29.5mpg .......wish it had been more ! mixture of town and motorway and not driver particularly hard.
now in a temporary company car - Mondeo tdi - it's averaged 39mpg in the 700 miles I have done in it, very little of that on motorway
Apparently it is now cheaper to get a comparable new Golf than a new Ford Focus! The Golf is also more expensive than a similarly specced A3 ie by the time you have added everything to the Golf that the A3 already has its more expensive. What are the manufacturers up to? Ford have upped their prices several times for the same model over the last 18 months.
So much for the Recession!
Not keen on diesels,noisy,smelly ,heavy nasty fumes(health issues with soot that they belch out). Small petrol engines are where it's at. Unless you're a high-miler.

V8 defender towing 3 ton of 16 foot trailer at a 'swift' pace - what a sound
used to have two of them in the company, they had to go, lot of man hours filling them up twice a day, 6 days a week.
My old vectra CDTi was remapped to 190 Bhp and 300lb/ft and averaged 45Mpg when getting its arse kicked, quite a hard package to beat is a remapped diesel . Cracking buy that Mcmoonter, my old man ran them for year's and they never had much hassle with them

Audis have crap specs everything is optional, my mate paid way for extras that don't come near most of the standard on my new Golf never mind the previous. Remember the new Golf is not a year old and the A3 current model is older, as they get older they increase the standard spec to increase sales again.
Timber, I love that V8 sound. 5 mpg was a good day in my folks Corniche.
