Wow what a great thread. I never thought I would be so interested in road bikes again, but I've fallen into the 'I have a family now and don't have time to get out on the mountain bike as much as I would like. What i need is a road bike so I can go for a quick spin from my front door' category. I gather that this is becoming increasingly common.
I just put this together for about £1450 (the complete bike above is £1300 but has a lower spec groupset on it)

It will do for a first bike back into road riding! But there are some lovely options here.

geetee thats how i started and roading has totally taken over my riding.
You can jump on for a quick few hours from your door - get some great fitness and be home by 11 with 50-60 miles in your legs.
I've dropped 4 stone in a year thanks to my roadbike.

There was a steel Baum for sale on bike radar a couple of weeks ago, also a pegoretti at £1750 still there.

Carbon that's a pretty inspirational story. I need to lose weight as well (I did drop a stone two years ago but I had a big crash this year and most of it has crept back on).
Target is to get back below 100kgs and the road bike is part of that strategy.

Not what I'd call lightweight but rides very nicely.
