Is 29x3 that much different to 29x2.3?

Just wondering whether to treat myself to a new "muddy night and local rides" bike. So invariably it'll be SS and rigid, but fancy a fat or 29+. Much difference on the usual overused, potholded, rooty, woodland singletrack?

atm the big difference is lack of 29+ tyres, knards just don't cut it on the trails this time of year, nice firm trails though are great
