Are there any products which can shorten a hollow11 crank to use on a kid’s bike. I have a nice xt crank I want to use on a 24″ kids bike but their a bit long…

Highpath Engineering do crank shortening – Shorten your cranks here – Only works on solid cranks though.

They also make a crank shortening device, but it’s a lot more pricey.

    Hollowtech2 cranks are hollow.
    So no.

You’d have to drill and thread through the hollow bit.

Try Spa or SJS cycles for cheap, short, cranks.

Those Highpath ones are a bit pricey.

    http://www.dutchbikebits.com/crank-shortener has some cheap ones.

There was a woman who did the tour divide with shortened cranks this year – I think because of an injury.

Seen the high path stuff but it needs the bolt on crank to work. She has a working bike just looking to upgrade it.

lots of crank shorteners out there similar to the highpath ones. Google is your friend. always a bit of a bodge tho for example:

I looked into shortening some cranks, then opted for these instead, square taper, 152mm, 4 bolt with a BCD to suit modern rings.

I went with the Suntour option linked by QWERTY above, another option is the new SRAM NX cranks, available in 155mm (if 1x is your thing…)

Oh no, he’d been ill for a long time but I didn’t know he’d died. RIP Chris.

I had some non-hollow deore cranks, I got the back of the cranks filled in with weld. And then new tapped holes put in by 18bikes.

    Not pretty, but it worked…

    (Cranks now 140mm)

I also went for the suntour ones in qwerty’s post. Nice little cranks for the money. I already had a bb and replaced the rings for a single NW. Seem to work nicely on my lads bike.

I shortened a pair of Deore (LX I think) from 175mm to 150mm. I don’t think they were the hollow type. They are not going to see the load they were designed for originally so I wasn’t worried that the re-tapped holes went into a recess on the back face. 85% of the original depth was there, I filled the area with isopon to avoid a snag. No fancy tools, just a pillar drill, pair of Park Tools taps, hacksaw, file and emery.

Zee cranks can be shortened as they arent hollow 😉

Mike Burrows used to do them, don’t know if he still does.

I went for the suntour cranks that Querty linked to above. Once you’ve binned the heavy steel rings and replaced with a NW single, theyre a pretty good weight.

I’ve use the SJS cranjk shorteners on my kiddyback tandem for years. They are great, but for permanent single bike solution, I’d look elsewhere to be honest.

I bought these, to use with a single chainring, for my lads bike:

Apart from needing a tapered BB it’s pretty good.
