road gears question, will a 9 speed crank work with a 10 speed set up

It should work ok. Might not shift perfectly if you shift with the power on.

yes but you will need to put 10sp rings on it as they are thinner, the 9sp ones will be too thick for a narrow 10sp chain.

Yes it will work fine, and no, you don't have to change rings.
I've done it.

I've used campag 9spd rings with 10spd set ups, likewise 10spd rings with 11spd gearing. The difference is tiny. Worked fine for me apart from the odd clumsey change on my part.

What a Bulb-End...
Of course it won't Mick; if you even try it your bike will surely explode and you may well die.

no such things as 10speed chain rings... the difference between 9 and 10 is that the outer plates on the chain are thinner (because the cassette spacing is smaller to fit in the sprockets in) but you can mix and match brands and speeds of chainset because the inner dimensions are equal
single speed to 5speed to 8 speed all used the same chain dimensions, it was 9 and 10 that the outer plates needed to reduce
which is why I don't want 10speed on a mountain bike, the chains are going to die quicker...

I've found an eight speed chain works on a nine speed cassette in friction mode when trying my mtb wheel in my road bike to see how big a cog my 90s Campag Athena road mech can take. 34 teeth to my surprise.
By 'works' I mean it went up and down the cassette okay when the bike was upside down.

except campag chainrings get thinner as you add gears 9 through 11.
