How much to pay for an Orange Five?

I've never know such biterness towards a brand such as their is with Orange, can I ask why or am I opening a can of worms.
A lot of people on STW absolutely love their Orange Fives. I've never ridden one so I cannot definitively comment either way, but I've been put off by the steep cost of the frames and the single pivot design.
It took me an awful long time to figure out that it's all in the details with this type of suspension design and a lot of folk will tell you that Orange have got it right. Moreover, simply undoing two pinch bolts to drop the old bearings out is a hell of a lot more user friendly than attempting to drive out twelve knackered press fit bearings on a Specialized FSR.
If you've test ridden a lot of bikes and know that you want a Five then you've at least done your homework. Just shop around, but I'd say that £2.6k is a little steep for a secondhand bike with potentially no warranty backup. It might be an idea to try the BikeScene folk for a Five frame and see if you can build it yourself.
[edits] Oh and I'm glad that you're going to ditch those rims. They're a little "challenging" I think!

And as if by magic, out they all came. Case for the prosecution rests.Don't you like your single pivot then

Yes I do, significantly more than I did the one on yours, that's why I bought it

You should have seen the comments levelled at Marin until very recently, much the same. It's a shame that they've gone back to making boring looking bikes again.

tbh the price of anything secondhand (or new) for that matter is how much someone will pay, and how long the seller wants to wait for.
If absolutely brand new, but not from a dealer, then max of 75% of replacement price (after any discounts).

Makes no sense at all, try again

over-priced, under-engineered, heavy, dull bikes
Why are you describing a Transition Bandit on an Orange Five thread?

He can't be he didn't mention the crap paint

Orange 5 pro with Kashima front and back plus maxle is £3100, makes the second hand one look a bit pricy...

Seem to of got a few people a little excitable on here this aft. Ok I will leave my money where it is then.

Its a fookin good bike. Ride it- wish I could afford that build

Got my 5 pro with hope pack and coloured rims 2010 ridden 6 times last October for £1500. The bike is as new and same as the latest ones.
...and I love it!
Seems the one you are looking at is a little expensive I think...

2010 bikes didn't have tapered headtubes, ISCG mounts or dropper post cable guides.

Must be a 2011 then, sorry. Mine has got a tapered head tube and ISCG mount.... Time flies!
So £1500 not bad then...

Bargain.

Whoah, that's a hell of a bike.
Did the owner have his colour blindness cured after the first ride and that's why he's selling?

Bargain. They are probably a great 2nd hand buy. I think you'd be a bit of a mug to buy a new one though. And over £2k for a 2nd hand one? Madness.

Oh, constructive comment: Bikeactive are doing 15% off everything at the moment.
They shift a lot of Oranges, good place to buy one.

Must admit I dont like the look of the bike..... changing the wheels and tyres would help for a start.
Having said that a bike one ride old is worth more than half retail I would say, more like 2/3 - 3/4 perhaps?

OP: if you've got a set of wheels and circa £2.5k to spend then i'd look at this frame and fork deal
you would have plenty leftover to sort out a decent groupset if you shopped around and would have a very nice 2012 build and probably enough for a few beers to celebrate!

holy excess brake hose batman

Lol I agree it's pretty ugly - bet it rides beautifully though
I have bought second hand before and I find it's a very small minority that's buys who knows what they are talking about. Very different from brand new bikes. Just my take
Good luck

It's not towards the brand, it's the fanboys that think (and preach) that Five is the answer to everything, despite them clearly being over-priced, under-engineered, heavy, dull bikes. And yes, I rode one in my quest for the perfect 120-140mm travel all-rounder and it wasn't in the top five!
Whats the top 5 then?

The OP did say that he was going to change the wheels... I don't get all the negativity in this thread? It's a bike, some of us will like it for whatever reason and some of us won't. If we all liked the same thing then we'd all be punting Spesh Stumpjumpers around the trails.
Vive la difference.

i think if everyone was to be honest, the ones who slag off {like i do} orange fives, are the ones with a deep lusting for one.......

I recon you are right

Bit pricey especially if you factor in the cost of those wheels you are about to put on.
And way too much hose, don't like the cable run under the rear shock and that Fox sticker on the down tube is terrible (can't be standard but nice addition if you're 15).
Just looks over priced and a bit pimped nova to me.

I have an 08 one and despite the frame being over 3 yrs old have no desire to change......must be good
on the original question though - no, too pricey. around 2K IMO

Occurs to me he wants what he paid for it more or less, because he bought it and hasn't used it. Trouble is second hand market doesn't work like that, like with a new car as soon as you take it out of the showroom it's worth a whole lot less! Would offer him 1800 for it, that's what it's worth, used or not.

As Skywalker says...for the same price you could get a brand new, warrantied "five black gold".
