I get they want to compete with Apple, but the pricing seems ludicrously ambitious for a new phone without the brand cachet and loyalty that Apple has.

The 5in Pixel will cost £599 with 32GB of storage or £699 with 128GB of storage. The 5.5in Pixel XL will cost £719 with 32GB of storage or £819 with 128GB of storage. Both models match the pricing of Apple’s iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus

If every component is of a higher specification than an iPhone, which it appears to be, then why should it cost any less?

There are already countless "cheaper" options if you want a smartphone that doesn't cost the earth, there's no point trying to expand that market.

Allied to that there must be an element of "if it's cheaper it can't be as good" so start off pricey and you can always go down from there.

Price is too high. 6p seems like decent value now, or Moto z Force maybe. I'm after battery over anything else. Moto x play doing somewhat well for me one year later.

Crikey. The oneplus 3 manages more or less the same spec for £329 with 64gb...

The new Sony Xperia XZ looks nice and comes in a little cheaper in price. Could who be a contender for those not wedded to the obvious Apple or Samsung.

No mention of missing SD card slots, removable batteries?

Google have dropped a bollock on this one.
The main appeal of Android was its price! They're going to really struggle to command this sort of premium for their product.

I really dont think they will. New Android is very polished, Google control the hardware and the software so that should be flawless and it's a very premium device. It competes with the iPhone, so it's priced accordingly. Too cheap and people wont buy it. Its 'reassuringly expensive'.

is it going to last more than half a day?

Bit stupid when every other bugger can make an android phone that lasts longer than Googles flagships.

Not really, it just works 😉
New Android is very polished, Google control the hardware and the software so that should be flawless and it's a very premium device.

This, been using a Nexus 6p for a year now, had the Nexus 5 for 18 months before that. Both excellent phones, both did exactly what they said they would quietly and effectivly.
is it going to last more than half a day?

Unless I spend all day listenting and with the screen on browsing mine lasts 1-1.5 days especially with the battery saver. Couple that with the boost from a 10min fast charge it's never really caused me a problem.

Googles share price rose today, on the day of the new i-launch apples dropped. Make of that what you will

I've a 5X and it's the first phone that I've had that I'm happy with, it just goes about it's job with min fuss and hassle. I'll be looking at these when it's time to change

battery life is happily a day and a half (unless being hammered) more importantly I can charge it from empty to full in a couple of hours

Will never buy a Google phone again. Got their first attempt maybe 8 years ago, was absolutely useless. Got rid of it after 3 months even though it was a 12 month contract.

Unless pricing is substantially cheaper they will make little headway against Samsung and Apple.

I don't really care about it's penetration against the two market leaders, it's completely irrelevant

Yeah I'm the same with bananas - I had a bad one 8 years ago and I haven't eaten one since.

I think you'll find that Google will be 100% opposed to that view, that's their sole reason to develop a 'premium' phone...

In terms of actual manufacturer (eg, Google vs HTC vs Samsung), yes, it's irrelevant. In terms of OS / infrastructure though (Android vs iDevice) it's very relevant as it attracts developers.

If they want to compete with Apple they need to make it look like a premium item and sell it like one. That blue one looks terrible and their website could be selling A.N.Other android phone.

And they do phone cases in pretty colours and with pictures on! Is it 2007?

Whether you like Apple or not they know how to market their products very well.

I think phones have progressed somewhat in the intertwining years! 😆

Not that I'm promoting buying this phone. I think it's crazy to spend so much on for a finger print scranner, NFC and some extra processor power, which in the main is largely useless and other such fairly useless trinkets.

So Apples are too expensive but Google are reassuringly expensive. 😆

same on my Nexus, actually quite intuitive when you start to use the phone on a daily basis.

what do they actually do that justifies the price? Google phone, Apple, ANother 'premium' phone.

I have a HTC One mini M8 blah, blah.......It doesn't have finger print recognition, but I can pay for stuff with it, it take nice photos, I can make calls, send text, [s]look at porn[/s] go on the internet. I genuinely don't understand what makes these phones sooooo expensive.

Although I can understand if it's just "people want them so we charge more and they are a bit blingy" or if they do loads of 'business' stuff.....

My 7 is due any moment, but I'll certainly have a look in 18 months when I can change again.

I didn't like my last Andriod phone, seemed to have 2 or even 3 apps that all did the same thing, or variations of the same thing and I found the 3 unlabled bottons annoying - they seemed to do different things on different apps so I said I'd never go back, but it seems most of my issues were down to it being a Samsung who want to push their own apps / shops over Google which won't be an issue here, and the fact it was a low-spec S3 Mini which is never going to be as nice to use as the iPhone 6 that replaced it.

The amount of people willing to part with their cash.

Beer has a similar effect on me. though more in a bulk rather sense! 😆

Google had better improve their software quality & support if they think they can charge big money for the Pixel. I had two different Nexus phones, both had software problems introduced by updates (i.e. they broke stuff that had been working) which Google refused to acknowledge.

Oh no, I remember now- a google employed did respond in the form of a blog post about one of the bugs after about a year. He was bitching about users posting 'me too' and 'this still isn't fixed after X months'. WELL ****ING FIX IT OR AT LEAST SAY THAT YOU'RE WORKING ON IT. ****

I was a bit of a Nexus fanboi but I just don't see how these Pixel phones are going to compete with Samsung in the android space and iPhones in the other smartphone space, unless all this machine learning whizz bangery is some serious next level craziness.

I think this is a real attempt by google to capture the iPhone,Samsung, HTC etc high end phone market.
People will happily pay high prices for the top of range iPhone etc.
Up till now Google has focused on the mid to low end, established itself well and made a good name for itself.
It always amazes me that people will pay so much for a mobile handset. I've been using a Moto G (Mk2 and Mk3) for a couple of years. I really cant find them lacking really, they're not blingy, they just work.

On the fingerprint sensor why put it on the front? Pick up a phone and where are your fingers? How do you pick up the phone with your fingers at the front if you want to use it?

Well done I pick up. My phone as my finger sits in the middle at the back, exactly where the sensor is, kind of how you hold it. Like someone had thought of it

Is the big deal about this you talk to the phone a lot when using apps? Do many people want that? Seems a gimmick to me rather than the next big thing. I used to feel a tit using Siri in public when I had an iPhone, was it just me?

Apparently it's taken off in the states but is still not really the done thing here. Googles voice recognition is ahead of the competition though and I do somethings use it when I have my hands full.

Its bad enough people talking to their phone with it on speaker. Is it really that hard to put your phone to your ear so we don't have to listen to you waffling about Britney's thrush in public again?

Whats their Unique Selling Point ? Same price as established players, where is their advantage ?

Yup because we know them and are repeat customers having had a positive experience. Also Apple phines hold their value well so overall cost of overnership is reasonable

Fuzzy - no idea, I have never used it. I know why the phone companies are keen on it, the more they improve voice recognition which they do by AI learning of Siri usage the more ability they will have to scan our voice calls like they do emails for advertising keywords. IMO its absoluteky not about user convenience

it's not iproduct? They have a headphone socket? but I suspect it's a premium phone designed to work with the Google platform for all the google/gmail/chrome users
