Just had one after a 10 mile TT, I like them, but they are expensive, so only get them when on promo, either direct from FGS, or from Home Bargains, where they have them for 99p, which works out the same as direct when on BOGOF. Way too expensive at full price from Morrisons / Sainsburys @ £1.89ish. edit, just seen they are 94p at Sainsburys at the moment, so good price.

As to if they work, having one after a hard ride, then next day I feel good, not very scientific though.

Yazoo Choc milk

[img] [/img]

Virtually identical to For Goodness Shakes but way cheaper and lasts months in the cupboard. Tastes nice and I do find it helps with recovery after a big ride.

Think I'm addicted to Yazoo Strawberry, I have one after going to the Gym and it seems to work with recovery.

I find they're not as effective as the more 'pro' recovery drinks (SIS etc) but FGS are pretty much the only recovery product I've used that doesn't make me fart like a moist blunderbuss so I'll rate them on martial preservation grounds alone.

In my utterly unscientific tests I have noticed no difference between using FGS chocolate drinks and milk+nesquick+banana in a blender, the latter being considerably cheaper. That said I do like the FGS drinks and will happily scoff one post-ride. The concept is spot on of feeding your muscles with protein and carbs ASAP after a hard/long ride to promote recovery.

I've found they are uniquely effective in Summer when out riding every day after work.

Buy on offer, dilute with full-fat milk and whisk. Does the trick. Better than chocolate milk/Mars/yazoo but at regular RRP, bit much.

PSA: Where's got 'em on offer?

Sainsburys @ 94p

Normally 99p at Home Bargains, or on the BOGOF that FGS have often running (tho not at the moment), but you need to buy 24 at a time.

To the superstore!

Edit: 94p! NINETY FOUR P!*fills boots*
That'll come in handy for fence-building festival arms.

I like 'em

They stop me destroying the fridge when I get home and I usually feel pretty good the next day.

Tend not to mix too well with alcohol though

Another fan here - buy them on offer, great to stick in the bag if I've travelled to do a ride and stop me going mad in a service station/fridge/McD's. Might just be a mind trick but I feel better the day after a big ride, and that includes comparing against Yazoo etc. If you can afford them, try them. Your money, your body, stuff what others say if it works for you.

If you have a Costco card Yazoo works <60p per bottle if you buy a pack of 12.
I tend to drink half, top up with milk and put in the fridge for the next day.
I find a whole one can be a bit heavy going in one hit!

Re-feeding carbs immediately after a ride is good science, and adding protein is also widely recognised. Doesn't REALLY matter what form those carbs take as long as they get into the blood quickly.. but some recovery drinks seem to work better than others.

The FGS strawberry flavour is fantastic, especially if you mix it with milk. The problem is the milk; as you get older you are producing less and less of the enzyme lactase, which enables you to digest milk so you begin to become lactose intolerant, which makes the drink slop around in my stomach for several hours and makes me very windy.

I'll mix up a powdered FGS if I'm doing back-to-back big rides, they certainly seem to help but I've not done any comparison with plain milk etc. The powdered version mixes up really well though and is more convenient to take with you if driving to an event in the car that's being left in the sun all day.

I've done some of my own research, and compared some of the bottle labels from Sainsbury's

It turns out that the "magic" is the ration of Carbs, protien and sugars in Choc milk. This ratio is pretty much the same for most chocolate milk products vs FGS. However FGS contains some added micronutrients and vitamins which unless you were working out very hard or have a compromised diet, you are paying over the odds for. If like me you are already taking a probiotic vitamin (again, arguably not needed), you really are wasting your cash.

2l of Sainsbury's milk would cost me £1.29 - I'll be reverting to that as my recovery drink now methinks - its all about the 3:1 Carb / protien ratio.

I mix 1/2 pint semi-skimmed with 2 rounded dessertspoons of Cadbury Chocolate Powder. Seems to do the trick.

Not sure how you'd do a scientific trial to prove which is best but I'm always wary of a product which is massively more expensive than a close equivalent you can make yourself...
