My wife is on a course in Edinburgh next week and I've taken the day off with the plan of parking somewhere near Edinburgh and spending the day on the road bike.
Any suggestions for parking the car and doing a ride of up to 80 miles?
I'm thinking of parking at Mussleburgh or Prestonpans and heading down the coast road to Dunbar, not sure what to do after that but whatever I do I want to avoid the A1.

Head up to Gifford, then take the B6355 towards the Whiteadder Reservoir then to Garvald and Dunbar before returning along the coast.
There's an Audax route that returns slightly inland and I think that comes to 110km. let me know if you want a GPX file for it.
Thanks, that looks like a good plan. So head up to Gifford from Prestonpans. What sort of distance would that be, about 50 miles?
From Potsanpans it's probably around 55 miles - more if you go all the way into Dunbar. Go via Tranent and Pencaitland. There's a great wee climb up to the moors above Whiteadder. It's mostly quiet roads too.
scotroutes route is a fav of mine.
Else try the back roads out of Edinburgh > Peebles > Inners > Edinburgh, about 65 miles on quiet roads
Scotroutes plan is good. Even better would be to start in Musselburgh. Go through Inveresk, up Carberry hill, then take the cycle path to where it ends beyond Pencaitland. From there to Gifford.
donald - I was assuming Gary would be on a road bike. Not sure the cycle path to Pencaitland would be suitable (it's a while since I was there)?

You may well be aware but there's a park and ride in Musselburgh (well, Wallyford) so you can leave the car there for free and the other half can get a bus into town.
Even better, although I'll probably drop her off then go and park.

Edited to state that If you park at Musselburgh the trains are [u]slightly[/u] more frequent than Wallyford.
The cycle path was road bike friendly last summer at least.

Bummer about the weather - I did a similar run on the road bike yesterday, was a great day for it!
Yeh I had a nice commute on the bike yesterday. To be far the rain stayed off till the last hour.
