I'm looking to get one, not sure whether to go for full length jacket with hood, or the pull over one. Will be used for on the bike and also walking and climbing. How do they perform?

    Cheers.

I have a very old pull on. It's probably the best biking / all round jacket I've ever owned. It was warm enough for sub zero riding with just a base layer under, yet it wasn't horrendous on it's own in temperatures around double figures. I replaced it a couple of years ago with a gore NTS thing which is good, but not as breathable or versatile. My next jacket will be a vapour rise pull on.

    Santacruzsi,

I have the Rab smock which is blue pertex outer and the black microfleece inner, bought autumn 2006.
It is a fantastic single layer for spring/autumn but too hot for summer (no pit vents) and too cold even with a wicking wool layer-1 in winter.
I switch to Buffalo Cycling Top (yellow and purple, but at least it is good on the road) or Big Face Vest for the real cold. A single layer Buffalo will be OK for -10C and OK in the drizzle, just gets swamped in a deluge.
All of them dry very quickly after a wash or out on the trail.
Just so you don't think I am a 'big' guy with plenty of padding, I am just 1.68m and 50kg.

Dont have the Rab, but do have a Haglofs LIM Barrier pullover. Cracking bit of kit. Was looking for a Rab pullover but couldnt find one. Saw the Haglofs, lot better. Folds away in it own pocket, very windproof and warm.

I've got the Rab VR Jacket.

Spot on for walking in The Lakes IMHO.

I'm also a big fan of Haglofs, which as allready mentioned is excellent kit..

I've used Rab VR for years, imo it's extremely good gear, too warm for summer, and warm spring/autumn days. I use it on the bike, hill walking, alpinism, for extra warmth I wear a merino vest. The biggest problem I find is they can stink up quite easily and Rab suggest specialist washing and retreatment of exterior with nikwax.

I have a VR jacket and find it much too warm for anything other than sub zero conditions. Good jacket for walking though 🙂

Wife and I have the old type smock with a hood. Not been impressed with it to be honest. Firstly the outers seem over delicate so make sure you wash em inside out, as they pill up very quickly and snag on other items in the wash, esp if there are velco items in with it. Secondly the cut seems overly baggy, esp on the cuffs. Take a look at the Buffalo Techlite and the Paramo kit.

I have the VR smock. It's OK, but I prefer my Buffalo/Montane top most of the time. Very much a spring and autumn outer. If they put some 'pit-zips' in, it would be a killer top.
