    I’m tired…

looking back on history, people have always been in it for themselves, pursuing short term personal gains, rather than long term strategies for the common good.

Envy, backstabbing, scapegoating, shifting blame, lies, deceipt, corporate greed, government corruption, global genocide.

If you have a good heart, will people take advantage?

Is dog eat dog the only way?

Should I waste my time worrying about such things, or should I just ask ‘what’s in it for me’ and get on with having fun and letting someone else deal with it…

Despair For Humanity would be a good band name. Not as good as Bowling For Soup, but not bad.

Evolution is ‘won’ by those who compete successfully for limited resources.

Most of the stuff you list might be deemed a result of that drive to compete.

Doesn’t mean you shouldn’t despair about the outcomes though.

Lot of truth in what you have said – but Tom Watson etc… you seem to have been rather quiet on that topic of late.

    Thought you despaired already…

@waswas has it. We as a species are fortunate enough to be able to worry and despair at the outcomes, most creatures are just getting on with life and its competitive nature.

Tell you what, I’ll update the Rotherham thread soon…

In the meantime, bear in mind that there have been multiple allegations of child abuse against Leon Brittan, which the police continue to investigate.

That the media chose to focus on the rape case against him (which was pursued in an abnormal manner, by a Police Officer who happens to be a close friend of one of the main journalists fuelling the fire), whilst disregarding the continuing investigation into child abuse is very worrying.

Furthermore, that the Panorama program delved into the troubled past’s of (alleged) survivors of abuse, yet took Harvey Proctor on his word, with no disclosure of his past speaks volumes.

I’ll provide links to prove my claims when I update the Rotherham thread.

    Nope – I don’t.

I know far, far, far more nice people than I know evil people…

JHJ – fair dos. But please lets see facts and substantiated claims rather than conjecture and conspiracy, which does rather lead one to despair…

I hear ya Op, things can seem a bit bleak sometimes but other times humans are surprisingly kind and nice. I cycled to get some cash out last night and this old fella says to me ‘oh that’s a nice light, I bet you can see in the dark with that on, not like in my day with dynamo. etc etc’ and he carried on and we had a nice conversation, complete strangers and the end he says cheerio and off I went. Also the other week I was cycling down cumberland brook (macc forest) and there’s a big metal gate at the end and as we approached a nice chap out walking opened it and stood in front of it and he saluted, we rolled through laughing and I nodded hello, he was laughing and his family laughed and it was all very nice.

Thanks for the sentiment jekkyl, there is much in life to celebrate…

Don’t get me wrong, I have plenty of heartwarming moments and banter with friends, family and complete strangers, but some people (and events) just leave you feeling cold.

So the OP starts an apparently genuine thread and all his previous misdemeanours are used against him by some on here?

I despair for….oh, yeah, the OP has point!

Ummm, sort of, but not quite. evolution isn’t “won” as there is no end point, and it is entirely non detirmined…More like: evolution is merely the success of species that are best adapted to make the most of the environment they find themselves in…

There is much evidence that without co-operation we (humans) wouldn’t have got to where we are now.

You want to despair? Just look up Entropy and what it has in store for the universe*.

Ought to cure you of worrying over humanity’s ills. (Basically, it’s the credo of “nothing you can see will be alive in 100 years taken to the ultimate conclusion).

    * Actually, don’t.

Much to despair, much to celebrate.

Despair and negative outlooks tend to grow if you feed them, the worse it is the more you see the bad and the more you look for it.

OP this might help you see things a little differently although I understand your persepective. Small minded people often maker larger ripples and so may colour your perspective on society as a whole. Both of these articles are on the evolution of altruism in humans, more recent research has shown that groups with greater altruism often win out in the long game of evolution:
