[#1983232]

Have some 454 Air U-Turn Pikes that I'd like to convert to coils.

How easy is this to do?? and what do I need? Is it just the U-Turn spring assembly and do I just replace the air unit inside the leg with this??

Any help/advice muchly appreciated ๐Ÿ™‚

Cheers

No, I'm 99 per-cent sure that the lowers on the coil and air pikes are actually different, so it simply isn't worth doing - you'd have to swap the lowers as well as the internals, at which point it makes more sense to eBay the air U-Turns and buy some coil forks. That's what TFT told me a couple of years back when I asked them the same question anyway.

Yup,

AFAIK just take the dual air assembly out of the LH leg and drop the coil assembly in.

The lowers are the same.

I definitely know you can't do it the other way round as the coil can hit/rub against the inside of the lower leg, as a result it isn't smooth enough for the air chamber seals to seal correctly and it will loose air.

Go for it.

I know you can't do dual air-> coil, thought u-turn air to coil was okay though.

It is TF tuned told me so when I phoned up and asked about it.

Nice one, just as I thought. Sounds easy enough, even for me.

Thanks lads

some time ago I tried to convert a AIR U-TURN into COIL U-TURN and it was not possible...
the lowers arent the prob...the AIR uppers are missing the groove to fix the snap-ring which holds the COIL spring base plate....so...no way...

maybe newer ones are different....so its worth to check before...

The lowers are identical. You may find the stanchions are model specific though, but you'd have to check with TFT.

accu is right , air uturn upper tubes do not have a circlip groove needed for the base plate / neg spring assembly ,

I definitely know you're wrong. Cos I've done it. It *may* be the case it's not smooth enough but it's not always the case. And it could be polished smooth if needs be.

Dual air and coil uppers are identical as far as you're concerned. You can do it.

ia you are right and wrong , std dual air upper tubes have the circlip groove , but the op says air u-turn these do not have the groove .

Can I ask, why you'd want to?

(Not trolling, genuine question - I was under the impression that air was ephemerally "better").

Just much prefer the feel and ride of coils.

me too....I have still my first pike (coil u-turn) from 2005, heavily abused but in perfect condition ....a year ago I bought the air u-turn version, but didn`t like it for personal preference..
converting was not possible ..
so I swapped it for another coil u-turn...

Oops, sorry if I misled anyone. I'm pretty sure TFT told me it wasn't possible, but my brain cells have been taken apart by altitude. That's my excuse anyway.
