No, the V-tec mechanism itself has never failed. The block may be scattered across the road, but the V-tec mechanism will still be hanging on, like a cockroach after the apocalypse.

you do know cars have gears other than first ?? I'm surprised a car engine can get anywhere near 8000rpm without blowing.

VTECs are a bit special, innit. I had an 03 Civic Type-R. Loved it, great engine. Sorry to hear your 'Teg is in trouble…bummer 🙁

    Will an S2000 engine fit?

As for car engines not going over 8 grand, you've never driven a v-tec.

    It works something like this:
0 to silly revs = Nissan Micra 1.0 style performance
silly revs to the limiter = OH MY GOD THE WORLD HAS SPEEDED UP.

At his age, sfb wants the world to stop so he can get off. Or wishes it would at least slow down a bit

I haven't driven for years, but when I glance at the rev counter in cars when I'm getting a lift to a ride, I usually see 3000 rpm…

S2000 lump would be wrong in a 'teg, need to stick with the original 1.8.

I feel for you WCA, my parents had one of the first 300 official imports (number 086 iirc) and I loved that car, nearly stopped speaking to them when they traded it for a HRV of all things!

The v-tec is completely different to most other engines. They drive like rather ordinary engines at normal rev ranges, but when the v-tec switchover takes place, you're moved over to a race / rally style cam, with lots and lots of power at high revs.

Not really my cup of tea, but it's a great way of having a high power small capacity engine that you can actually live with day to day – if they were on the v-tec cam all the time, there'd be absolutely no low down power, terrible fuel consumption etc.

You bastid – I was hoping it wasn't going to be your ITR when I saw this thread!
I loved that car (well, those cars in general, not yours in particular!).

Maintenance schedule up to date, etc? I always thought those were pretty bullet proof as long as they were serviced well?

Get the car sorted, there is only so much fun you can have without it.

I once ran my zx9r at 12000 rpm for 15 mins (about 45 miles) on an empty German autobahn, chasing a friend who knew the way…

After a few minutes the little worrier in my head started to wonder for how long Kawasaki had tested them at max revs 😳

    Hi guys,

I have got home and calmed down. Lets put this in perspective. I haveblown the engine in the best car I have ever owned.

I also met Petes Gaff (I think I have cancer and an scared). That is a top bloke. Riding with him was just like riding with anyone else but I felt priveliged. Please can everyone give shit loads of money to his charity LEJOG ride.

The bloke who says 'If I am still alive I will come to the BBB' and actually doesn't know if he will be is a top bloke.

Must've been many years, redline on my 1991 is 7500 from the factory (though it makes no sense to push it there in standard form as it stops pushing out as much power after about 6500rpm.

Oh – bad luck matey :-/

Talking of high revs, one of my cars will rev to 44,000rpm without batting an eyelid….

It does only have a 3.3cc engine though – kicking out just over 2bhp!!

I feel for you. Used to own car 00035 and it was simply the most fun 4 wheel vehicle I ever owned yet still be practical enough for day to day,, even managed to take 2 kayaks on a roofrack without any trouble. Still yearn for one again and wish Id had the means to keep it. Really hope you get it running again soon.

Matt-p Spookily enough I also have fitted two kayaks on the roof too. I ended up just shoving them in the boot though as they were quite heavy and the roof panel is quite flexy.

Petesgaff – It was a real pleasure to meet you. From your thread I knew you were a nice bloke but I was expecting to meet some sick and weakly individual, not someone who could match me up the hills! See you in August (if you are still alive*)

*I am not being nasty, he said it first. A proper top bloke with a great mental attitude

We couldn't get our display ZX-10R in the race trailer after the Le Mans GP a few years ago, so I had to ride it back to Germany.

04.30 in the morning, empty autobahn and full throttle for an hour. The only distraction was the dash lights which kept flashing for some reason. Gave me a bit of a fright the first time they all lit up!

Only good things to say about the car.

140K miles with just a clutch to replace.

It was booked for a service next weekend. Perhaps it should have been last weekend. 🙁

Not sure what to do yet. Stuck in Shitzerland for the week but if anyone knows of good VTEC specialists near Southampton I would appreciate recommendations. It sounded like I have only blown the top bit of the engine but I am not sure.

Has it just skipped a tooth or two on the timing belt? Bent valves and some labour?

    BigBikeBash

Lots of rattly metal noise near the top of the engine. Sounds like something broken and bouncing around the valves.

Just want to know if there is somewhere better than the local Honda dealer
