BEING OFFERED STOLEN BIKES FOR SALE?

Guys!

This happened to me today for the first time!

I travel all over the place with my job and get to meet various folk. I work in the Automotive trade and as you can imagine, some of the people aren't the nicest. Today I was offered a bike for £300 and was told it was a £1500 bike. Pictures of the bike were shown to me from a mobile phone, but I said I wasn't interested. Please don't ask me what it was or where I was! As I got back into my car to leave I explained to the person selling the bike that he was playing with fire, but this fell on deaf ears. I got the impression that he purchased the bike from some thieving 5hit who was probably after quick cash for the usual stuffs.
Anyone else been offered a bike and told it was hot?

Far too often. Most of the bikes the local Yute Dem ride around on round here are nicked.

I've told local plod that they really ought to be asking how a 14-year old scrote can afford a £1000+ bike, but they are pretty useless tbh. It's like talking to a brick wall.

Believe me, it ain't worth the hassle, not over material things. I'd have to be very sure there would be no comeback, before I said owt. I don't like hospital food.

All very well being all sanctimonious and righteous, until you have to enter the Real World. And for some people, that's not quite as safe and cosy as Little England.

Hence the reference to crimestoppers. If you give them sufficient detail about the bike and the ~~Handler~~ client of yours, it will be acted upon. If you don't then you're complicit in the handling of somebody's bike. Imagine how you'd feel if it was yours.

It was a picture of a bike on a phone that I saw! And I have reported the bikes details etc to the correct authority and yes, I have thought about what if it was one of my bikes also!

there used to be a youf of about 12 or 13 who used to get stoned with the youfs who lived in the bedsit down the hall from me..

he used to come knocking on my door every week or so with some scabby BSO that he'd nicked.. always asking if I would swap it for some dope.. it wouldn't have been quite so bad if they were good bikes.. and I smoked dope..

I waited until I saw his Uncle in the town one evening and politely enquired if the neighbours kids bikes kept going missing.. needless to say the youngster got a blimmin' good clip round the ear..

the shame of it is that the kid's in his 20s now and casually accepts porridge as an occupational hazard..

Listen mate; the police round here as so effing useless, that I have absolutely no confidence in them whatsoever to protect me from harm from nasty types. Ergo, I ain't about to poo on my own doorstep by informing on people I have to live near. Cos they know where I live. I don't fancy having to try putting out a fire when a petrol bomb's bin thrown through my window, or having to look over my shoulder all the time in case some thugs jump me. And yeah, stuff like that does happen where I live.

Where I know there will be no comeback, or the person involved will pose no threat to me, I have no problem in doing my bit as a citizen.

Air a bit thin up there on that high horse?

the OPs mistake was to tell the guy that he was "playing with fire".

had he said nothing he could have told us what bike and perhaps someone here might know if it was stolen. then action could be taken.

i agree with Elf. not worth the risk of having some geezer after you - esp. if you have to work with him....

If I had more faith in the local plod to actually do owt to prevent crime, as well as feeling safe and protected, then maybe I'd feel a bit more disposed towards being a Good Citizen....

I am merely pointing out that in the O.P's circumstances, there are ways of passing the relevant information, however your attitude of don't tell the Feds in case the handler puts two and two together is a major reason why thieves and handlers have such an easy time of it.

And do you really, really think I have the 24/7 back up of my colleagues? I've had threats from people I've met at work and still go about my daily life with my wife and kids, just a few miles from the area where I work.

I don't think many Yute Dem call the police Babylon these days; I think they use expressions such as 'Feds' and 'Five-O'. I can't keep up with Yute-Speak tbh.

Ok. While you've bin tossing off on here, I've just bin downstairs to intervene in a nasty row between a couple (they had a kiddie in a pram as well), bin threatened by one of the bloke's mates, had a glass bottle thrown at me. Fortunately the other two mates were ok, and sorted things out or they cooduv got really nasty.

Why did I intervene?

Cos 20-odd minutes after 'phoneing the police, none have arrived, in spite of me telling them that a small child was at risk. I only went down after the couple started swinging at each other, as I thought someone cooduv bin hurt.

Guess what? Plod have just turned up, now everyone's gone away.

Flipping useless. I'm just grateful I'm not now having to 'phone an ambulance.

And yeah, I'm shaking; a kid in a push chair screaming cos he was terrified. Proper nasty situation.

Great work once again, plod. Yeah well done.

Yeah I suspect when you called them the police were fannying around eating donuts Elfin, or sat about watching Lethal Weapon 2.
They definitely wouldnt have been rushed off their feet doing other work, no sir, no chance of that.

The two that just turned up in a car din't look like they rushed to get here. I din't hear any sirens indicating they considered two people fighting and a child potentially at risk all that serious.

not sure I could get stolen goods these days but probably could with some minimal effort

made a decision years ago [ car trade] top never knowingly buy anything stolen if no one would they would not steal as it would be pointless to rob

Never support thieves that is all there is to it for me.
If you steal food I am not going to say anything but that is as far as it goes.
Would probably tell the police if approached and I could give actual information

Is that genuinely the best you can come up with? You went through some pain to come up with that, obviously.

I think some hard of thinking people on here seem to be confusing 'looking out for my own safety in my own home and guarding against possible repercussions from some very nasty people' with 'condoning crime'. How incredibly intelligent and thoughtful.

Tell you what; you come here, I can point out some bad people, and you can go and proclaim loudly to them how you're such a fine upstanding citizen and how you're going to inform the police as to their nefarious activities.

And see how far you get.

I will call an ambulance for you though, I promise.
