As title really. I know it depends on my usage, but does anyone use a 3G or 3GS iphone on a Vodafone contract - is it a decent, reliable setup generally, and is the 3GS significantly better than the 3G? Worth paying £89 for the upgrade from a free 3G? Ta v much.

Or buy a 2nd hand iPhone and a SIM only contract (voda might do them, O2 definitely do) which only ties you in for a minimum of a month and is about £15 per month cheaper...
Then when the 4th Gen iPhone comes out most probably in June, go and get one of them!
FWIW my contract on my 3G iPhone has just expired, so I signed a 20 quid per month SIM only contract (700 minutes, 700 messages, free unlimited 3G usage) on O2 which is saving me £15 a month in the meantime, then as soon as the next gen iPhone comes out I'll be first in the queue no doubt!
*I'd be very annoyed having only recently signed an 18 or 24 month contract for a phone when they suddenly bring out the new version of it. They kind of did that with the original iPhone, then only 8 months later the iPhone 3G, but they did at least offer those of us with original iPhones a free upgrade to a 3G, something they stopped doing ages ago now...

MB you sure a sim-only-contract sim will work on an iphone?
I have been told that std sims don't work with them (was planning to do similar and asked)

My O2 contract has just finished. I phoned up today and changed to the 'Simplicity 20 for iPhone' tariff. Apparently not all staff know about it, but I phoned today and selected 'I'm thinking of leaving o2' on the menu and the lady knew all about it. Benefits are:
* 30-day rolling contract
* 600 minutes
* 1200 text messages
* Visual Voicemail
* Unlimited web & Wi-FiAs that is for £20 per month and actually is better than the 35 quid tarrif I was on before, there is literally no reason not to do it. Then you can wait till may / june and upgrade to the new model. Or stick with the current phone and save 180 a year.

I am on the o2 simplicity plan, same as Ewan by the looks of it, and the sim works fine in the second hand 3G iPhone i got off my bro-in-law., who had it on o2 iphone contract.

Ewan - presumably you don't get the iphone itself though? Great deal otherwise. Problem is I need the phone itself and I'm not an O2 customer, so can't threaten to leave!

You don't have to threaten to leave to get the 20£ simplicity deal mentioned above. The tariff is available to anyone but yes you do need to get your hands on an iPhone. Second hand O2 3G for about 200£ as the only thing that is tempting on the 3GS is the extra capacity.
But I'd wait for the 4G probably in coming out some time in June.

Having had both 3G and 3Gs the 3Gs is way faster and has better 3G reception. Couldn't get 3G signal at home with a 3G, but can with a 3Gs.
Screen anti oil thingy is better on the 3Gs, battery life is a LOT better as it's easily lasting more than twice as long, camera is significantly better (but still poor).
For 90 quid I'd get a 3Gs over a 3G. Not sure what 2nd hand prices are like on the 3Gs at the moment though

Yup, cos yesterday I walked into the O2 shop and explained to them that my contract was about to expire, and asked what my options were...
Kind young lady then explained I could go to a SIM only contract, save £15 a month, and job was a goodun...
So signed up then and there...
