everyone it's will hear from single
0:02
track magazine and single track WorldCom
0:04
and I'm here to talk to you about the
0:06
2019 Canyon lux now a few weeks girls
0:10
invited out to Girona in Spain to test
0:13
out the new Lux
0:14
this is canyons new lightweight full
0:16
suspension XC race bike now it replaces
0:18
the existing Lux in the Canyon liner a
0:21
bike which is coming up to five years
0:23
old this year the new lux carries over
0:25
the 29 inch wheels one hundred mil
0:26
travel front and rear it's still
0:28
designed to be a very sharp lightweight
0:30
and efficient cross-country race bike
0:32
but almost everything has changed it's
0:34
entirely new from the ground up the luxe
0:37
frame will only be available in
0:38
carbon-fiber there are no alloy versions
0:40
available at all but there are two
0:42
versions of the carbon-fiber frame just
0:45
like other Canyon models you've got an
0:47
SL frame an SL X frame
0:49
now the SL X uses a slightly lighter
0:52
weight carbon fiber and as a result the
0:55
whole frame is a little bit lighter
0:56
you're talking sixteen hundred and
0:59
sixty-two grams is the claimed weight
1:01
for a medium luxe SL X frame however
1:03
that weight is for the bare frame once
1:07
you add in the rear shock the remote
1:08
lockout the chain guide through axle
1:11
seek collar and a few other bits of
1:13
hardware you're looking at 21 28 grams
1:16
which is not quite as headline-grabbing
1:19
as the original figure but still very
1:21
impressive nonetheless there are some
1:23
really nice features on the luxe frame
1:25
some of which have carried over from
1:27
other Kenyan models and some which are
1:29
brand new we've got the impact
1:31
protection unit up at the headset and
1:33
the IPU basically stops the headset from
1:35
over rotating so in the event of a crash
1:38
your handlebars are limited how far they
1:41
can turn around and therefore hopefully
1:43
stop the shifter and brake lever from
1:45
careering through the top tube which is
1:47
quite nice we've also got the qixels
1:50
rear axle on the back so this is boost
1:53
spacing on the back and we've got a
1:54
really neat little integrated axle which
1:57
just pulls out of the back end and
1:59
allows you to loosen or tighten the rear
2:01
axle without any tools which is quite
2:03
neat another neat feature on the new
2:06
luxe is the super minimalist chain guide
2:09
I think this weighs about four point two
2:11
grams or something like that it's just a
2:13
little light
2:13
alloy guide that bolts into the head of
2:15
the main pivot bolt it can be adjusted
2:18
for different chain ring sizes very
2:20
simple very minimalist but does the job
2:23
really well the main difference with the
2:25
new luxe frame is of course the layout
2:28
with suspension now Kenyon have flipped
2:30
the rear shock from a vertically mounted
2:32
shock up to the top tube and the idea
2:36
here
2:37
aside from performance advantages that
2:39
it's provided it also delivers a lot
2:42
more space inside the main frame so now
2:44
for every single frame size you can fit
2:46
two full-sized water bottles inside the
2:49
main frame that goes for the small
2:51
medium large and extra-large frame sizes
2:53
for long distance riders and marathon
2:55
races this is a really big deal because
2:57
it means they can carry two water
2:59
bottles on the frame for racing you're
3:01
all less likely to need to stop at a
3:03
feed zone in order to refill a bottle
3:05
grab a fresh one you can just go
3:07
straight on through the suspension
3:08
design itself has changed considerably
3:10
we still have a carbon-fiber one-piece
3:13
wing arm so there's no pivots at the
3:15
back the swing arm is designed to flex
3:17
through the carbon seat stays as the
3:19
suspension cycles through its travel
3:20
there's two little links that drive the
3:23
rear shock we've got a carbon fiber yoke
3:25
which attaches to the lower eyelid of
3:27
the rear shock and a little alloy link
3:29
on the inside which bolted to the seat
3:31
tube and controls the link as it goes
3:33
through the travel the rear shock itself
3:37
is a metric size we've got a 210 by 55
3:39
mils stroke now that is quite a big
3:41
shock especially for a short travel
3:44
cross-country race bike with 55 mils
3:46
stroke and a hundred mil travel we end
3:49
up with an average suspension leverage
3:51
ratio of 1.8 1 to 1 so very low and that
3:55
means we end up with quite low operating
3:57
pressures for my 70 kilo right away I
3:59
had 110 psi in the rear shock to get me
4:02
at 25% sag so quite low pressures
4:05
relative to other cross-country race
4:07
bikes the bike that I was riding at
4:09
launch is the second from the top it is
4:12
cold wait for it the luxe CF s LX 9.0
4:16
pro race just rolls off the tongue that
4:19
one it's a sub 10 kilogram carbon fibre
4:23
race with it super light super trick
4:26
we've got a SRAM X
4:27
one Eagle group said on here we've got a
4:29
rock shock suspension package with a
4:31
Sidwell cut fork on the front very
4:34
lightweight Reynolds wheels these are
4:36
carbon-fiber rims and they weigh less
4:38
than 1400 grams for the passive very
4:40
light thankfully a dropper post which
4:43
was a very nice addition for the trails
4:45
that we were riding so the writing
4:47
position on the lux
4:48
it is fairly traditional for a
4:50
cross-country bike the basic numbers for
4:52
geometry we've got a 70 degree head
4:54
angle and a 74 point five degree seat
4:56
angle so quite sharp the reach on the
4:59
medium size that I was riding is 435
5:02
millimeters that combined with an 80 ml
5:05
stem 720 millimeter bars it does put
5:08
quite a lot of weight on the front wheel
5:10
stretches you out over the cockpit puts
5:12
you in a really good position for
5:14
climbing and getting the power down on
5:15
the pedals and in general this bike it
5:18
does pedal very very well very efficient
5:21
I found it quite an exhausting bike to
5:23
ride because it encourages you to get
5:25
out of the saddle and hammer it really
5:28
goes you into going faster and just put
5:30
more effort in it's not a bike that's
5:32
really interested in going slowly it
5:33
wants you to go fast so at the end of
5:37
end of the day I was absolutely
5:39
knackered riding this bike the
5:41
suspension design is really efficient
5:42
and to be honest I don't know why
5:44
canyons bothered with the remote lock
5:45
out on the handlebar the dual lockout
5:48
activates both the fork and the shock
5:50
but to be honest this bike doesn't need
5:52
it it pedals really really well as is if
5:55
it was my bike I'd be taking that off
5:57
straight away personally although the
5:59
suspension is very very stable and very
6:01
balanced under pedaling it's also still
6:05
active so great traction levels on this
6:08
bike
6:09
it actually has quite good big hit
6:10
capability so I took it off some
6:12
reasonable sized drops and jumps and the
6:15
bike stayed really planted without sort
6:17
of squirreling about yeah in general the
6:20
suspension gives the whole bike a lot of
6:22
stability and a lot of calmness so even
6:25
though those geometry numbers are quite
6:26
sharp quality of the rear suspension
6:28
gives this bike a load more capability
6:30
and a load more stability than perhaps
6:32
those geometry numbers would suggest the
6:34
fork didn't quite match the quality of
6:36
the rear suspension turns out there
6:38
weren't any bottomless tokens inside the
6:40
air spring
6:41
of the CID Forks that we are writing and
6:42
that's something I would do if I had a
6:44
bit more time with this bike is to put a
6:45
couple of tokens inside there to give it
6:47
a bit more progression and a bit more
6:48
ramp up to balance with the rear
6:50
suspension but otherwise I really
6:54
enjoyed riding this bike and it
6:55
surprised me quite a lot with how well
6:57
it rode on quite rough rocky terrain
6:59
that we were riding around Girona
7:01
now for the 2019 Canyon luxe range there
7:04
will be six models available the two
7:06
top-end models will use the lighter
7:08
weight SLX frame and the four cheaper
7:10
models will use the SL frame the SL
7:13
models will also come with a longer
7:15
travel fork 110 millimeters of travel
7:17
that will kick back the angles a little
7:19
bit and in theory should relax a
7:21
steering a little bit especially for
7:22
descending of note is that any model
7:25
that comes with the RockShox fork has a
7:27
longer 51 mil fork offset whereas the
7:30
Fox models will come with a shorter 44
7:33
mil off set now that will give a
7:35
slightly different steering dynamic so
7:37
with the Fox fork models you are going
7:39
to get a slightly Karma and more damped
7:41
steering feel whereas the RockShox
7:44
models you're going to get that sharper
7:45
more responsive feel that you get with a
7:47
longer offset so that's something to
7:49
bear in mind as well now if you'd like
7:52
to read more about the 2019 Canyon luxe
7:55
Range make sure you jump on singletrack
7:57

7:59
news story on the new bike as well as my
8:01
first ride review of this very
8:03
lightweight very efficient and very
8:06
stealthy full suspension race bike from
8:08
Kenyon thanks guys to route
