good morning everybody or good evening
0:04
depending on where in the world you're
0:05
watching from welcome to fresh goods
0:07
Friday down under or fresh goods Friday
0:10
Thursday
0:11
evening uh and uh I'm in the shed today
0:14
I've got a bike with me here that I want
0:16
to talk to you guys about um I've been
0:18
writing this for the past uh well I
0:20
wrote it yesterday and I wrote it a
0:22
couple of weeks ago um it's not actually
0:24
a test bike um but a lot of you guys
0:26
have been asking about this bike based
0:29
on some of the other test bikes I've
0:30
been riding lately so what I thought I'd
0:32
do is uh we go through this bike on on
0:35
live videoos so if you've got any
0:37
questions for me about this bike um if
0:39
you got any questions for me about any
0:40
of the other test bikes I've been riding
0:42
lately kind of how they compare um or if
0:44
there's a similar bike you're looking at
0:46
at the moment that kind of fits into
0:48
this midt travel trail bike category
0:51
then drop them into the comment section
0:53
below and uh and I have the technology
0:56
to be able to read out those questions
0:57
and hopefully answer answer them for you
0:59
on on live TV cuz we're here on YouTube
1:02
live um this is single track magazine my
1:05
name is Will so we've got people tuning
1:06
in there hello welcome welcome to the
1:08
show um I can see we've got some more
1:10
people tuning in so thanks for joining
1:12
if You' got any questions for me if you
1:14
got any feedback on this video drop them
1:15
into the comments section below oh we've
1:17
got uh Timothy's in the house hey Will
1:20
hey Timothy thanks for joining in uh
1:22
welcome back as well thanks for uh I
1:24
wasn't here last Friday um I was away
1:28
but um but had been doing these live
1:29
videos hopefully every every week on
1:32
Friday morning here in Australia uh
1:34
which is usually Thursday evening
1:36
depending on whereabouts you're watching
1:38
from shed life guy hi Will nice to have
1:40
you back after your secret trip thank
1:42
you very much shed life guy welcome to
1:44
the show and thanks for tuning in good
1:45
to see you back again um so the bike
1:48
we've got here I should uh we should get
1:50
rolling on this one it's the TR Fu X so
1:54
you can probably tell by the uh the clue
1:56
in the name for this video oh we' got
1:58
Matthew in the house hello hello Matthew
2:00
welcome and uh thanks for tuning in and
2:03
uh yeah we're talking about the track
2:04
fuel ex demo bike that I've got here now
2:07
as I said earlier this isn't actually a
2:09
test bike uh Tre hasn't sent me this
2:10
bike for testing um this is actually a
2:13
demo bike from a local Tre dealer here
2:14
in Bendigo and the reason I've got this
2:17
bike here is I wanted to ride it a few
2:20
times um I have ridden this bike in the
2:22
past I actually reviewed one a couple of
2:24
years ago for single track but I wanted
2:26
to ride this bike to kind of rejog my
2:27
memory on the fuel ex platform form
2:30
because this type of bike is very very
2:32
similar to the trail bikes I've been
2:34
riding lately so we're talking the
2:36
canyon neuron CF 130 M travel 29er giant
2:39
trance 29 which is also 29er obviously
2:43
with a 134 and 115 mil rear travel uh
2:46
we've got the Marita 120 on test at the
2:48
moment so that is a 120 mil travel trail
2:50
bike with 29in wheels and a 130 mil Fork
2:54
ooh um L stackers in the house smash
2:57
like I don't know what that means but
3:00
that sounds
3:01
cool feel free to elaborate on that
3:04
comment smash like uh you might be
3:06
talking about this bike cuz yes it can
3:07
smash a lot of things that's um that's a
3:09
good point hello everybody says El
3:11
stacker hello welcome to the show El
3:13
stacker thanks for tuning in we've got
3:14
Missing Link MTB in the house love that
3:17
black on black stealth color that is a
3:19
very interesting comment because Trek do
3:22
this kind of black finish in quite a few
3:24
different models um but they also do
3:27
with the ex8 and with some of their
3:29
other bikes they do two options so you
3:31
can kind of get the full stealth black
3:33
option or I think this one comes in like
3:34
a cherry red color which looks pretty
3:37
dope um but they're kind of doing the
3:39
the mild but wild options so if you kind
3:42
of prefer the black stealth look they do
3:44
that and that's this EXA here but they
3:46
do another color option too we got some
3:48
more questions coming through Timothy I
3:50
love your show I want to see how many I
3:52
can see in a row right now I've watch
3:53
four in a row yes you have tuned in four
3:55
in a row thank you very much Timothy
3:57
well we've got plenty more coming away
3:59
so make sure you tune in every Thursday
4:01
evening or Friday morning uh for the
4:03
live show and we've got Matthew saying I
4:05
think he means press the like button all
4:07
right okay yes absolutely that's a
4:10
that's a good little uh uh a good little
4:12
segue so if you are enjoying this video
4:14
give me a thumbs up I'd love to uh to
4:16
have your feedback on this um so yeah as
4:18
I was saying about the fuel ex ex um
4:20
it's not actually a test bike but I was
4:21
really Keen to um get a ride on one of
4:25
these and the guys at the bike shop very
4:26
kindly lent me this demo bike to ride um
4:29
um and and indeed get a bit of feedback
4:32
and a bit of a comparative feel to those
4:35
other test bikes that I've got on the on
4:37
the go at the moment the giant trance
4:38
and the marina 120 I've also just had
4:40
another 29er trail bike turn up in a box
4:43
at the shop which I will have for you
4:45
next week so next Friday's live show is
4:48
going to be on that bike I'm not going
4:50
to tell you what it is now um so you'll
4:52
have to stay tuned to next week's show
4:54
um but we'll have another brand new 29er
4:56
trail bike so I'm doing quite a bit of a
4:58
wrap-up of all these trail bikes at the
5:00
moment so plenty to go uh Trail talk MTB
5:03
is in the house hey Trail talk MTB
5:05
thanks for joining he's saying radon
5:07
question mark radon radon if anyone can
5:10
help me with the pronunciation raidon or
5:12
radon um question mark so he's asking if
5:15
that's a test bike uh you'll just have
5:17
to tune in next week to find out uh
5:19
Timothy yeah I love the color one of my
5:21
riding buddies got a slash 9.9 and it
5:23
looks so nice with the carbon finish and
5:25
the white logos yeah that's a that's a
5:27
pretty hot bike that slash very very
5:30
goodlooking machine um Greg is in the
5:33
house I got an 18 ex 829 18 do you mean
5:37
size or you mean
5:38
2018 um I think you mean 2018 this is a
5:41
2019 by the way um El stacker thanks for
5:44
the live chat my pleasure mate and
5:46
thanks for tuning in and uh and
5:47
commenting on the video and asking us
5:49
questions as we go Matthew says
5:52
raidon okay all right so we've got one
5:54
vote for raidon uh anyone else think
5:56
radon um love to hear what you think on
5:58
the pronunciation there um right Nick
6:02
Bates what are the biggest differences
6:03
between the ex and the neuron very good
6:05
question and we're going to go into some
6:08
detail about this bike what makes it
6:10
different what are kind of the unique
6:12
Technologies on this bike how it rides
6:14
on the trail and then kind of how it
6:16
compares to those other trail bikes that
6:19
I've been testing and reviewing lately
6:21
so we'll go through the basic specs on
6:23
this bike first huh this is a 13 M
6:25
travel 29er so we've got a 130 mil
6:27
travel for 130 mil travel on the rear
6:30
29in wheels big bag tires we've got
6:33
boner xr4 t- missery tires here these
6:36
measure at no fewer than 2.4 Earth in uh
6:41
in terms of width so they're a big high
6:44
volume Tire pretty aggressive tread
6:46
pattern I think it's pretty cool that
6:48
tracks put on some you know proper tires
6:50
onto their trail bike rather than
6:52
putting on something lightweight and
6:53
faster rolling um they've put on
6:55
something that's got a bit more meat to
6:57
it a bit more aggressive kind of tread
6:59
pattern
7:00
um not the lightest tires but you know
7:02
they're going to help you when it's
7:03
rough and Technical and you want
7:05
Traction in those kind of really rough
7:08
um awkward sections of Trail o uh Greg
7:11
is saying I just put 2.6 XR falls on
7:14
today that is very good to know because
7:17
um Greg bring brings up a really good
7:20
point there so he's talking about he's
7:21
got a 2018 version of this Fike and he's
7:24
put on 2.6 in wide tires um moders maybe
7:29
just this the camera angle but that
7:31
thing looks slack yeah it's cuz the kind
7:33
of the fork kind of kicked out a little
7:34
bit so I think it is relatively slack
7:37
I'm going to talk about that shortly but
7:39
it might just be a bit of the camera
7:40
angle as well so back to the tires T
7:43
States a maximum width on this bike 2.4
7:46
in wide so they say 2.4 in on the rear
7:49
is the biggest you can fit however Greg
7:51
has just pointed out you can fit in a
7:53
2.6 in wide tire so there is clearance
7:56
in the back end here however TX States
8:00
the official maximum clearance is 2.4
8:03
in Greg says 2.6 is clear they measure
8:06
2.56 in with the stock rims okay so he's
8:09
running the stock rims which I believe
8:10
are 30 mm wide or 20 they Sorry 27 mm
8:14
wide I think on your model there um so
8:17
yes so there is there is a bit of room
8:19
to run a little bit bigger than the
8:20
stock tires you can run 27.5 plus wheels
8:24
on this as well so if you were going to
8:26
run the plus setup the 27.5 plus Wheels
8:29
you fit 2.8 in in the back and there is
8:32
clearance in the fork for 2.8 in but
8:35
Trek recommends putting a slightly
8:36
longer travel Fork to lift the whole
8:38
bike off the ground cuz with the 27.5
8:41
plus Wheels the whole bike gets a little
8:42
bit lower to the Ground start running
8:44
into issues with pedal clearance so this
8:47
bike has 130 mil travel Fork but you can
8:50
fit a 140 mil travel Fork it is rated to
8:53
take a 140 mil travel Fork so 130 140
8:57
the stock bike the stock 29er comes with
8:59
13 front and rear but you can run 10 mm
9:01
longer on the front if you so desire
9:04
Timothy is this your full-time job cuz
9:05
this seems like a dream job it is
9:08
currently my full-time job yes and uh
9:11
and I love talking about bikes so it
9:13
doesn't get much better to be perfectly
9:14
honest speaking of bikes we have one
9:16
here um so let's talk about um perhaps
9:20
we'll talk about the geometry cuz um
9:21
someone was just asking saying it looks
9:23
really slack in the video um it's
9:26
actually not hugely slack by today's
9:28
modern stand
9:29
let me get my cheat sheet out um there
9:32
are two geometry positions on this bike
9:34
there is a chip up the top here it's
9:36
called the Mino link and The Minnow link
9:39
is an offset link and you flip that
9:40
around 180° with a 5 mm hex key that
9:44
chip comes out you can flip it around
9:46
180° and it shifts the location of the
9:48
rocker link it basically kind of lifts
9:50
the bike up and steepens the angles or
9:52
in the low position it drops it back and
9:55
it relaxes the hand and seat angle and
9:57
drops the bit bottom bracket so I'm
9:59
going to give you the geometry in the
10:01
high position because that's what I've
10:02
been running to be honest I don't have a
10:05
huge need to run it in the low position
10:07
I'll tell you why um the head angle is
10:10
67.7 De so steeper than probably what it
10:14
looks on camera there 67.7 this is in
10:17
the high position remember 67.7 and 74.7
10:22
de seat angle this is the 18.5 so smack
10:26
bang in the middle of the size range I
10:27
call that a medium some Brands would
10:29
call call it a mage cuz it is on the
10:31
bigger side for a medium Tre also does a
10:33
17.5 which is sort of a more traditional
10:37
medium but the 18.5 little bit longer
10:39
this has a reach of 450 mm 450 reaches
10:44
on this 18.5 bike so a good length like
10:48
a nice long front center on this bike um
10:51
so those are some of the key
10:52
measurements we've got 432 mm chain stay
10:55
so quite short um for a big kind of 29
10:58
or 130 Trail bite like this 432 chain
11:01
stays so um so those are the basic
11:04
numbers now as I said before that's in
11:06
the high geometry position you get that
11:08
minnow link undo that chip flip it
11:11
around you have to do it on both sides
11:12
so not just one side but both sides
11:14
there are two chips there um you flip
11:17
that into the low position and the
11:19
geometry relaxes everything drops down
11:22
and kicks back the head angle will get
11:24
as slack as
11:26
67° and the seat angle will slacken out
11:28
to 70
11:30
4° crucially though this is the really
11:33
important part on the geometry of this
11:35
bike when you do flip that geometry chip
11:37
the bottom bracket lowers by 10 mm which
11:40
is a quite a considerable change in the
11:43
uh the bottom bracket height so there
11:46
are a couple of things for adjustability
11:49
here so it's talking about the option to
11:50
run slightly longer Fork you've got the
11:52
option to run 27.5 plus wheels on this
11:54
bike as well along with that minol link
11:57
flip chip um for adjusting geometry
12:00
you've got a really kind of broad
12:02
spectrum um of a broad range of options
12:06
how you can set this bike up so you know
12:08
in the kind of more traditional cross
12:10
country trail bike mode like I'm running
12:13
here with the high position on the
12:15
minnow link which to be honest I found
12:16
to be absolutely adequate for the
12:18
descending I've been doing um and gives
12:20
you a bit more bottom bracket clearance
12:22
and the bottom bracket sits the drop is
12:24
something like 30 mm so that's 30 mm
12:28
below the Hub axle line
12:29
so it's still reasonably low um and when
12:32
I'm sitting on the bike I actually got
12:34
someone good friend of mine Brent
12:36
McKenzie helped me yesterday to measure
12:38
the sagged bottom bracket height and
12:40
it's still over 30 cm or 303 mm is what
12:43
we measured and that's from the axle to
12:46
the ground and that's with me sitting on
12:48
the bike with the suspension at sag so
12:50
it's still fairly high but you can
12:52
expect that measurement to drop 10
12:54
millimet if you run the minnow Link in
12:56
the low position but if you are some
12:58
kind of uro Shredder and I think this
13:01
bike is uro worthy it is an absolute
13:04
monster on The Descent the suspension is
13:06
amazingly active amazingly plush you
13:09
could fit a 140 mil Fork on here maybe a
13:12
fox 36 maybe a rock shock lyric if you
13:15
wanted to go uh I think they go to 140
13:17
if not you could run a pike um but yeah
13:20
Fox 36 I think would be pretty mean on
13:22
here with a 140 mil Fork drop that minow
13:25
link into the low position you'd really
13:27
kick the bike back but you'd still keep
13:28
it fairly low to the ground as well so
13:31
yeah so you've got a lot of
13:32
adjustability that's kind of what I was
13:34
getting out there you got a load of
13:35
adjustability depending on how you want
13:37
to set up the bike for your riding style
13:39
now uh all right we've got a few
13:41
questions that have come through here um
13:44
Mr GW says the head angle needs to be
13:46
slacker and the seat needs to be steeper
13:48
possible if possible Ang angle set would
13:50
probably sort it I 100% disagree with
13:52
you Mr GW I actually think the geometry
13:55
on this bike is absolutely on point um
13:58
now I was riding yesterday on a local
14:00
test Loop that I've been riding all
14:02
those other trail bikes on and I've been
14:04
testing this in the high position so
14:06
remember that's the steeper head angle
14:08
that's a 67.7 de head angle which on
14:11
paper does sound unfashionably steep a
14:14
lot of uh these kind of trail bikes are
14:16
going to 67
14:18
66.5 the giant trance 29 for example is
14:21
66.5 De head angle the GT sensor is a
14:25
65.5 de head angle and it's basically
14:28
the same 13 travel 29er spec is this so
14:32
it's fairly steep in the head angle it
14:34
does not feel like that on the trail it
14:36
feels super stable super confident um I
14:40
think a lot of that has to do with that
14:42
reasonable reach measurement that we've
14:43
got here on the medium 450 so the front
14:45
center of the bike is relatively long
14:47
it's really planted and you combine that
14:50
with this rear suspension design I'm
14:52
going to talk about this in more detail
14:54
but this rear shock and the suspension
14:56
linkage and the way this works um very
14:59
very impressive um and I think that aids
15:02
a lot in the descending confidence um
15:05
and competence of this bike uh right uh
15:09
Missing Link what are the price ranges
15:10
on these that's a really good question I
15:12
think there's something like 18 model
15:15
variations of the fuel ex platform so
15:17
they start at the fuel ex ex5 and they
15:19
go all the way up to the fuel ex 9.9 and
15:22
you can get the carbon model um on track
15:24
project one uh custom bike builder so
15:28
you can get a c paint job you can pick
15:30
the fork you can pick the wheels you can
15:31
pick the group set you can you can pick
15:33
everything on the bike you can even have
15:35
your name painted on the frame if you
15:37
want to do that um so for the project
15:39
one bikes I think the sky is the limit
15:42
basically as far as the price is
15:43
concerned but let's talk about the price
15:45
on this this is the ex8 it's kind of in
15:47
the middle of the range to the lower end
15:50
of the range um it's with the aluminium
15:53
frame and there are ex ex5 7 8 and n so
15:59
it's one step down from the top end
16:00
alloy spec in Australia this sells for
16:05
$4,199 in the UK it retails for
16:09
£2,700 that is for the fuel ex
16:12
829 um I don't have American pricing on
16:15
me so if anyone in America is cheating
16:17
in or Europe as well I don't have Euros
16:19
but that'll give you a rough idea anyway
16:21
£ 2,700
16:23
$4,199 thank you for the question by the
16:26
way uh right Timothy saying on my Enduro
16:29
bike I didn't have much money left so I
16:31
put a GX 11speed would you recommend the
16:34
e113 12-speed conversion or change to a
16:38
GX Eagle that is a great question
16:41
Timothy and I'm glad you brought that up
16:43
because I am going to I've just had a
16:46
review sub submitted from one of my
16:47
testers who has just finished testing
16:50
the e13 12-speed conversion kit so it's
16:53
exactly what you're looking at and
16:55
that's basically where it takes an
16:56
11-speed sham shift
16:59
and derailer well basically a 1x1
17:02
drivetrain and converts it to 12-speed
17:05
so um so make sure you look out on
17:07
single TRW world.com because we'll have
17:09
that review going live hopefully in the
17:11
next week or so um but yes I'm not
17:14
entirely sure how David went with that
17:16
um as I said the review has just been
17:17
sent to me but a great idea because a
17:19
lot of people out there with 11speed
17:21
drivetrains who maybe want to get that
17:23
extra range of 12s speeed um but maybe
17:26
don't want to buy the entire group set a
17:28
whole GX Eagle group set for example so
17:31
stay tuned on that one all right um
17:35
Missing Link says I peaked on TX site us
17:38
pricing for the ex5 is $19.99 not bad
17:41
there you go so that's where the entry
17:43
point for the ex range starts with a
17:45
fuel ex5 they use the same geometry and
17:48
suspension design throughout the range
17:49
it's kind of more expensive components
17:52
as you go up in price um but the
17:54
suspension design is is basically the
17:56
same through the platform and that's
17:58
from the Bas level ex5 all the way up to
18:00
the 9.9 and the project one bikes so
18:03
it's essentially a single pivot
18:05
suspension design uh Timothy saying okay
18:08
thanks we'll look out no worries check
18:10
out that uh review Once it goes live so
18:12
it is um it's sort of a single pivot sl4
18:15
bar Arrangement so essentially we've got
18:18
one link down the bottom here with your
18:19
main pivot we've got the seat stay
18:21
linkage here a rocker link and the rear
18:24
shock actually floats between the rocker
18:28
link and an extension of the chain stay
18:30
so not unlike the merid that we checked
18:32
out two weeks ago which is one of the
18:33
test bikes that I'm riding at the moment
18:35
the rear shock doesn't attached to the
18:37
main frame it sits in between the
18:39
linkage itself and so that lower pivot
18:42
it actually rotates away as you go
18:44
through the travel and the idea is to
18:47
float the shock in between the uh the
18:49
linkage there give it a really kind of
18:52
very very gentle ramp up towards the end
18:54
of the travel so a lot of people I've
18:56
read a lot of reviews on this uh ex
18:59
remedy platform a lot of people say it
19:01
feels like it has more travel than the
19:03
number says on paper um but it is kind
19:05
of true with this bike um in fact it's
19:08
it's I would say it's true with the
19:10
Marita 120 as well that floating design
19:13
it does kind of eek out it feels like it
19:15
eakes out a little bit more travel um
19:18
certainly on this bike it's uh it's 130
19:20
on the back but it feels a whole lot
19:22
more capable than that that's for sure
19:25
um all right Timothy will you be in
19:27
Europe at one point oh I'm hoping to get
19:29
over this year so uh winter here but
19:32
summer in uh the southern uh Northern
19:34
Hemisphere I'm hoping to get over so
19:36
yeah hang tight on that one uh Trail
19:38
talk MTB why has Tre moved away for it
19:41
for the slash good question several
19:43
reasons for that um the main reason is
19:46
stiffness um so with the full float of
19:49
linkage I think what Tre wanted to do
19:51
with the slash was to shorten that um
19:53
chain stay um that those chain stay
19:56
tubes beefing up the main pivot area
19:59
shorten them a little bit as well so
20:01
give them the flexibility to run shorter
20:03
stays um but basically in the name of
20:06
stiffness also with a lot of these
20:08
modern air shocks they are uh much
20:11
higher volume as well compared to air
20:13
shocks from even 2 3 years ago so we've
20:16
got on this the Fox Float Evol air can
20:19
um rock shocks do the Debon air can as
20:21
well and in terms of the leverage rate
20:24
of these new school air shocks they're
20:26
getting a lot more like a coil they're
20:28
getting more linear and what that's what
20:32
that means is they're not ramping up so
20:35
hard like airshocks smaller volume air
20:37
shocks used to in the past so what Tre
20:40
has found is with the modern airshocks
20:42
it's reduced the need for that full
20:44
floater design so they were able to get
20:48
the suspension characteristics they
20:49
wanted on the slash um and also the new
20:52
remedy is the same the remedy does not
20:54
have the floating linkage the full
20:55
floater linkage the remedy in the slash
20:58
mount the rear shock to the bottom of
21:00
the bottom to the top of the bottom
21:02
bracket I should say to the main frame
21:04
um because they're finding that the
21:06
leverage ratio they wanted the
21:07
kinematics they wanted they could be
21:09
achieved without that full floer design
21:11
so hopefully that answers that question
21:14
um given that I would suggest that in
21:16
the future we may see the fuel ex ex
21:18
going to a similar design
21:20
perhaps uh Greg is saying do you like
21:23
the dro a post I've never had a problem
21:25
some people have complained about it um
21:27
another great question Greg um I have
21:30
mixed experience with this Bond treer
21:32
dropper post here now in Australia I've
21:35
had no problems genuinely it works fine
21:39
it's okay I mean it's it's it's kind of
21:41
like uh very similar to the giant
21:43
dropper post to the Brand X to the trans
21:46
X um The synchros Dropper post they're
21:49
all kind of Fairly similar really um the
21:53
uh the lever's quite nice though I quite
21:55
like the the thumb lever for this
21:56
dropper Post in the UK however my
21:59
experience has been less than positive I
22:02
found in cold weather conditions this
22:04
dropper tends to get really grindy and
22:08
slow to return as well and I think it's
22:11
to do with temperature because it's only
22:13
ever happened when I've been riding in
22:15
Winter conditions in the UK where this
22:18
the post is kind of slow to both
22:20
compress and return sometimes it can get
22:22
really grindy as well so it feels like
22:24
mud and water have gotten through the
22:26
seals and things are kind of a bit
22:28
sticky and tight exactly the same
22:30
experience with that giant contact
22:32
switch dropper post um in cold weather
22:34
conditions I found that it gets a bit
22:36
grindy and and slow to return and every
22:38
now and then it actually needs yanking
22:39
up which is a real pain in the bum um
22:42
but in summer conditions here in
22:43
Australia in warmer conditions no
22:45
problems at all so that's my experience
22:48
um and that's similar to uh other
22:51
testers in the UK um at single track so
22:54
um so some of the complaints may be more
22:56
to do from those who in wet and cold
23:00
conditions uh right Mr GW talking about
23:03
e13 cassettes why other makers don't
23:06
make 92 smallest Cog on the cassettes
23:08
both Shimano and Sham settled on 10 to I
23:10
suspect it's a tricky thing to do um and
23:14
I know Shimano is very uh very
23:17
efficiency based in the way they design
23:19
drivetrains so that might have something
23:21
to do with that one there we' got a lot
23:23
of questions coming through here I don't
23:24
think I'm going to be able to answer all
23:25
of them um but Chris is saying hey we're
23:28
loving the reviews and the fact they're
23:30
on local trail conditions Victorian
23:31
Ryder welcome to the show Chris and
23:33
thanks for thanks for watching um and
23:35
thanks for your question tell me what
23:37
what are comparable bikes to this T
23:39
Steed I'm in the market and leaning
23:40
towards the acid trance all right so if
23:43
you missed the start of this video I was
23:45
just talking about the fuel ex 130 mil
23:47
travel 29er and the reason I'm riding
23:49
this it's not a test bike I'm not
23:51
reviewing it it's actually a demo bike
23:53
from a local Tre dealer and I just
23:54
wanted to ride it to give me a bit of a
23:56
comparison with some of the other test
23:58
bikes that I've been riding lately uh
24:00
which I'm reviewing so we've had the
24:01
canyon neuron CF the giant trans
24:04
29 the Marita 120 and I've got a couple
24:08
more bikes coming in the very near
24:10
future which you'll you'll see on one of
24:12
these live video chats as well um so
24:16
yeah we we've been talking a little bit
24:17
about some of the features on this bike
24:19
the geometry um and how it rides on the
24:22
trail as well which gives me a nice
24:24
segue to go back into the suspension
24:26
design which we were talking about
24:27
before
24:29
um the rear shock on this is quite
24:30
clever this is a custom shock so it's a
24:33
Fox Float DPS shock which is what you'll
24:35
find on a lot of trail bikes um we've
24:38
got the three position lever here
24:39
there's a little blue dial here and
24:40
we've got open medium and firm settings
24:43
so that's pretty standard but inside is
24:46
where the magic happens it's called the
24:47
reactive damper now this is a patented
24:50
damper the treker co-developed with
24:52
Pensky racing shots they brought it out
24:55
I think it was 2014 now and I did I was
24:57
very to go on the original launch for
25:00
that suspension design the fuel ex when
25:03
they brought out that bright green ex
25:04
9.8 if anyone can remember that um had
25:07
the reactive shock and they did a 29 at
25:09
a 27.5 model and uh so we got to tour
25:12
the Pensky facility and actually look at
25:14
some of the development and how they
25:15
created this custom damper um to test on
25:19
this rear shock and work out how it was
25:21
going to feel on the trail um Greg is
25:23
asking do do you feel the DPS rides a
25:25
bit low in its travel um no I don't find
25:29
that at all let's talk about that
25:31
shortly though about setup and getting
25:33
the most out of the suspension design so
25:35
with the reactive damper what's really
25:37
clever about it is it's uh it provides
25:40
regressive damping via um a particular
25:43
shim which is kind of
25:45
precurved and the idea with this
25:48
reactive damper is do you know if you're
25:50
familiar with the inertia valve that uh
25:52
specialized users on the brain shock the
25:55
idea is to keep the suspension basically
25:57
locked out or fairly close to locked
25:59
down and when you and that means that
26:01
when you're pedaling suspension stays
26:03
nice and firm so you don't get that kind
26:04
of bobbing sensation it just stays nice
26:06
and nice and rigid um but when you
26:09
encounter a bump the idea is that the
26:11
valve um the inertia valve should pop
26:14
open allow oil to move through the
26:16
damper and then you get suspension you
26:17
get nice squishy um active suspension so
26:20
the bumps are arrayed but you still get
26:22
the efficiency now in use the inertia
26:24
valve in my experience tends to be still
26:27
be a little bit clunky even the new
26:28
brain 2.0 on that new epic fantastic you
26:31
can still feel the valve working on and
26:33
off the reactive damper in this shock is
26:36
much more subtle it aims to do a similar
26:38
thing so the idea is to give you really
26:40
efficient pedaling but at the same time
26:42
when you hit that bump the way the valve
26:44
cracks open and allows oil flow through
26:47
the shock to give you smooth uh active
26:50
suspension to turn the shock back on
26:53
basically the sensation of that is much
26:55
more subtle on this shock to be fair the
26:58
lockout isn't as firm so it doesn't give
27:00
you that super Rock solar platform and
27:02
if you're out of the saddle even in The
27:04
Firm position if you're kind of out of
27:06
the saddle really moving around you will
27:08
still get some bul from the suspension
27:10
but if you're in the saddle and you stay
27:12
seated it's it's firm you know it feels
27:14
fairly close to a lockout the way that
27:17
that valve cracks open as soon as you
27:19
hit a bump it allows oil flow very very
27:22
rapidly and it allows a lot of oil to
27:25
move through the shock and that means
27:27
that you get AC suspension quite quickly
27:29
with this in fact this is one of the few
27:33
suspension designs the one of the few
27:35
shocks that I've ridden personally that
27:37
I can actually ride proper off-road
27:40
sections of Trail in The Firm position
27:42
on the shop so if you're worried about
27:44
efficiency if you're the sort of Rider
27:46
that really wants a kind of really
27:48
responsive suspension feel this shop
27:51
does kind of give you that in that firm
27:53
position but it does have a quick
27:54
Breakaway quick enough Breakaway that
27:56
you if you Le accident leave it locked
27:59
out you can ride down downhill and it
28:01
will still open up and it will remain
28:03
open as well for those kind of rough uh
28:06
Rock rough Rock Gardens is what I'm
28:08
trying to say so um so it works really
28:11
really well to be honest I've sort of
28:13
spend most of my time in the middle
28:14
Trail position so you get a little bit
28:17
more firm compression damping you get a
28:18
little bit more response through the
28:20
bike Through The Handlebar through the
28:21
pedals um under pedaling it's it's still
28:24
quite efficient for technical climbing
28:26
that middle Trail position is Fant
28:28
fantastic cuz it holds the bike up a
28:29
little bit more in its travel gives you
28:31
a bit more pedal clearance so you less
28:33
likely to kind of clip and smash your
28:34
pedals into rocks on the trail um but at
28:37
the same time even in the trail position
28:39
in the middle Trail position the
28:41
suspension is still reactive enough huh
28:43
reactive um to open up on uh kind of
28:46
lger rocks so you still get that kind of
28:48
breakaway where the suspension then
28:51
activates opens up and absorbs the
28:53
impact and absorbs the hit so um quite
28:55
impressed with how that rear shock works
28:58
Now Greg was just saying before have I
28:59
found that the shock sags into its
29:01
travel too much that's a really good
29:03
question and it does depend how you set
29:05
up this bike now Tre recommends setting
29:08
up the SAG on this at
29:10
28% they have a fantastic calculator on
29:13
the website so if you go to if you just
29:15
search track suspension setup calculator
29:17
if you own a track full suspension bike
29:19
or a hard tail um you can basically tell
29:22
which year model your bike was which
29:23
model you're on put in your weight and
29:26
that is both you and your riding kit so
29:28
your shoes your helmet your backpack
29:31
whatever you ride in jump on the scales
29:33
get that measurement in pounds or kilos
29:35
put that into the calculator and it'll
29:38
spit out pressures for the fork
29:40
pressures for the shock rebound settings
29:43
and depending on the model it might give
29:45
you compression settings for the fork
29:47
and shock as well it is a fantastic
29:49
resource and I found it tends to be
29:52
pretty accurate as well unless you're
29:54
after a very specific ride quality it's
29:57
a really good place to start off with a
29:59
really good Baseline setting for
30:01
suspension settings so I was talking
30:03
about the rear shock track recommends
30:04
that about 28% the fork is interesting
30:07
I'm going to talk about this fox 34
30:09
because they recommend only about 15%
30:12
sag which is quite low I'm just uh we've
30:14
had a couple of more questions come
30:16
through uh shedlife Guy saying I've just
30:18
swapped out the e13 cassette the problem
30:20
is the lack of chain that can make
30:22
contact with a 9 to sprocket so we're
30:24
talking about the e13 cassette here
30:26
sorry for the segue um the e13 cassette
30:29
which has a nine- to small sprocket
30:31
you'll be lucky to get six months out of
30:32
it before rebuild yeah I think
30:34
durability on those cassettes is
30:36
probably the main downside so um you do
30:39
get a lot of range out of them um I
30:41
think 9 to 46 is the biggest they do
30:43
huge range um but yes potentially
30:46
durability um Greg is saying I ride it
30:48
an open so that's probably why mine sags
30:50
LOL so we're talking about the
30:51
suspension setting on this Fu X and
30:53
toggling between the open and the trail
30:56
position now the open position I found
30:59
is generally be if it's really rough
31:01
section of straight Trail then maybe you
31:03
want to run that but to be honest I was
31:05
only ever running open on re on the
31:08
descents like if I knew it was going to
31:10
be a long descent where it was going to
31:11
be quite Rocky and rough that's when you
31:14
that's when I flick into the open
31:15
position and you get
31:17
maximum maximum performance in this bike
31:21
is really F I'm just going to jump
31:23
Straight Ahead here this bike is super
31:25
fast on the descends I actually can't
31:27
believe how quick it is I think
31:29
combination of those high volume 29in
31:31
wheels and tires um the 130 mil of
31:35
travel is very very Supple it's
31:37
incredibly active part of that surely is
31:40
the ABP suspension design so Tre
31:42
actually puts a pivot around the rear
31:44
axle and that's called the ABP pivot so
31:47
you've got the axle that's my elbows you
31:49
got the seat stay and the chain stay and
31:51
there's actually a pivot there where the
31:52
seats stay where the brake is mounted to
31:55
rotate around the rear axle now there's
31:57
a whole bunch of techno mumbo jumbo
31:59
there but basically the idea is to
32:01
isolate braking from the suspension so
32:03
it means that when you're on the rear
32:05
brake the rear suspension is still able
32:08
to move it's still able to compress so
32:10
rather than the suspension kind of
32:11
stiffening up when you're on the brakes
32:12
which you do a lot of when you're
32:14
descending right rather the suspension
32:16
stiffening up and potentially losing
32:18
traction because if the suspension is
32:20
stiff on The Descent the rear wheels
32:22
more likely to Buck around and kind of
32:23
pop off rocks and roots and when the
32:25
wheels in the air when the tires in the
32:27
air there's no traction so the idea with
32:29
this ABP is to allow the rear tire to
32:32
maintain contact with the ground to
32:34
maintain traction um and in my
32:36
experience having tested TRX and Gary
32:38
fishes back in the day um over the last
32:41
kind of 10 years or so it does work
32:43
really really well um so you combine
32:45
that ABP pivot the full floater design
32:47
that Fox Float DPX DPS shock with the
32:50
reactive damper in it no less um and
32:53
this 130 mil travel bike is one of the
32:55
few 130 mil travel 29ers that I would
32:58
totally happily turn up to an Enduro
33:00
race on it's quite incredible the
33:03
quality of suspension that's on offer
33:05
here and uh one of my local descents
33:07
that I was doing yesterday is horribly
33:09
Rocky off camber it's got lots of shayy
33:12
pointy out sticky rocks um the sort of
33:15
thing that kind of really messes with
33:16
your confidence CU you don't want to
33:17
puncture a tire um but at the same time
33:20
there's lots of stuff to kind of slip
33:21
around there's loose rocks in there and
33:23
this thing just plows I honestly let off
33:26
the brakes point the bar point and shoot
33:28
and it just goes it's one of the most
33:31
descending hungry 29er trail bikes that
33:34
I've personally ridden um and that sort
33:36
of goes back to the original question
33:38
that someone was asking before about the
33:40
67.7 degree head angle going that sounds
33:42
steep it should be slacker than that I
33:44
don't actually think it should be that
33:46
much slacker it's you can make it
33:48
slacker in the low position you can kick
33:50
that head angle out to
33:51
67° um so it'll drop nearly a full
33:54
degree on the head angle but even in the
33:56
high position that I'm running at here
33:58
in
33:58
67.7 it it's plenty confident on the
34:01
descents no issues there whatsoever uh
34:04
right we had a few more questions come
34:06
through believe and the ex9.8 as well
34:10
this is the standard float reactive
34:12
shock so it doesn't have the through
34:14
shaft design I've not ridden the through
34:16
shaft shock yet um I would really love
34:18
to but I've not had any Tre test bikes
34:21
turn up just to reiterate this isn't a
34:23
test bike this is a demo bike from a
34:24
local shop which I'm just riding for
34:26
shits and giggles and to compare with a
34:28
couple of other trail bikes that I've
34:29
been riding lately so um so yeah so so
34:33
far it's it's been it's been quite eye
34:35
opening to be perfectly honest because
34:37
this bike has been around for about 3
34:39
years now I think I think 2019 signals 3
34:42
years that the fuel ex has been in this
34:45
current configuration so the aluminium
34:47
frame the geometry hasn't changed in 3
34:49
years they have added new shock
34:51
technology new Fork new components and
34:53
so on um but the actual frame itself and
34:56
the geometry is unchanged for the past 3
34:58
years so I sort of thought you know
35:00
maybe this bike's going to feel a bit
35:01
outdated compared to some of the newer
35:03
bikes I've been riding but that's not
35:05
the case this feels as is just as good
35:08
if not better than some of those other
35:10
bikes um in certain situations um Troy
35:13
is asking is this bike built with frame
35:15
material Trek believes will be the most
35:16
important change in cycling in 30 years
35:19
no it's not um I did see that commercial
35:22
that Trek has coming out I have an idea
35:25
of what it might be but I guess we'll
35:26
find out um I think in later this month
35:30
isn't it sometime in March 21st or
35:31
something like that anyway Trek's kind
35:33
of teasing some new secret material um
35:36
but remember that Trek no I'm not going
35:38
to give away a
35:40
clue um but no that material you're
35:42
talking about it's not in this Frame
35:43
this is just an aluminium bike actually
35:45
on that note I should add this is nearly
35:47
14 kilos out of the box this is quite
35:50
heavy so it's uh I mean a lot of that's
35:53
in the aluminium frame a lot of that's
35:54
in these wheels as well and the tires
35:56
they're not the lightest Tire tires and
35:59
they're not the lightest Wheels um
36:00
there's quite a lot of rotational mass
36:02
in there and you do feel that on the
36:03
climbs and Greg who's the owner of the
36:06
last uh Year's version of this who's
36:08
commenting and qu asking questions in
36:10
the comment section there he was talking
36:12
about riding in the open position I
36:15
personally recommend climbing in either
36:17
the medium or the firm positions on that
36:19
rear shock it makes a huge difference
36:21
and because of the reactive damper it's
36:23
it's quite quick to open up if you do
36:25
encounter bumps on the trail um so if
36:28
it's not a really rough technical climb
36:30
run it in The Firm position all the way
36:33
um if it's a technical climb put it in
36:34
the medium Trail position um I wouldn't
36:37
climb with it in the open position to be
36:39
perfectly honest because the bike does
36:41
tend to sink into the travel it doesn't
36:43
pedal as well as some of the other trail
36:45
bikes I've been riding lately should
36:47
should we should probably talk about
36:48
that there does feel to me I haven't
36:50
seen any graphs and to be honest I'm not
36:52
really interested in graphs I'm more
36:53
interested in how a bike actually feels
36:54
on the trail um but to me it feels like
36:57
there's less anti-squat in this
36:59
suspension design particularly compared
37:00
to that Marita 120 trail bike which is
37:03
quite Zippy and Poppy in its in its
37:05
pedaling but also in its performance on
37:07
the trail this feels a bit more grounded
37:09
a bit more steady and in terms of
37:12
pedaling you can definitely get bulb out
37:13
of the suspension design if you're
37:14
running it in the open position in the
37:16
trail position it firms everything up
37:18
and it feels a lot more efficient to me
37:21
and uh but because of that reactive
37:22
damper I mean it still works really
37:24
really well when it gets rough Greg um
37:26
could you do a drop off in the middle
37:28
position just fine yes absolutely you
37:30
can do a drop off in The Firm locked out
37:32
position you it's it's it's you can
37:35
actually descend on this bike with the
37:37
firm position on the shock that's
37:39
possible that's absolutely possible so
37:41
uh the way that it breaks away and opens
37:43
the shock and allows for suspension
37:45
activity um you can definitely run it in
37:47
yeah yeah you're saying I didn't know
37:49
that yeah absolutely you can do that and
37:51
that's has anyone out there now I'm
37:54
admitting something here have you ever
37:56
done a climb with the lock out
37:58
suspension locked out the fork and the
37:59
shock or one or the other and then
38:02
you've actually ridden a descent with
38:03
the suspension locked out and kind of
38:04
halfway down you're thinking wow this
38:07
kind of this is really Rocky this
38:09
descent this is really bouncy has anyone
38:11
has anyone ever done that I've done that
38:13
I've done that plenty of times I've just
38:14
forgotten to flick the shock back into
38:16
the open position um it happens you know
38:19
In the Heat of the Moment particularly
38:20
when you get to the top of the climb and
38:21
you're absolutely exhausted and you just
38:23
want to get the downhill you just want
38:24
to get onto the downhill and get it done
38:27
um it does happen but the beauty about
38:29
this reactive shock is if you do leave
38:31
it in the locked out position it's not a
38:33
crazy firm lockout but the way that it
38:35
breaks through and opens up the shock um
38:37
it means you can ride it in that locked
38:39
out position now I just want to say
38:40
hello to everyone who's tuning in now
38:42
because we've got a load of people who
38:43
are watching live um if you're enjoying
38:45
this video please give me a a thumbs up
38:47
and let me know where you're watching uh
38:49
whereabouts in the world you're watching
38:50
from and if you've got any questions
38:51
this is a live video so you can drop
38:53
them into the comment section right here
38:55
and uh and I'll do my best to answer
38:56
them for you um but yeah give me a
38:58
thumbs up if you're enjoying the video
39:00
and uh uh Mike Alexander is asking a
39:04
question here how do you feel this bike
39:05
compares to the new specialized stump
39:08
jumper St that is a really good question
39:10
Mike um the specialized stump jumper St
39:13
uh comes in 275 and 29 in versions The
39:16
29 is obviously more comparable to this
39:18
Fu x29 it has a touchless travel 120 mil
39:22
travel whereas this is 130 front and
39:24
rear um I think the stump jumper St the
39:28
suspens the FSR suspension design is
39:30
also very plush very active so not
39:34
dissimilar to this full floater linkage
39:36
that Trek is rolling with on the fu ex
39:38
the stump jumper also has really good
39:40
activity under braking when you're
39:42
riding really rough choppy terrain it's
39:44
keeps the tire connected to the ground
39:46
it's great um the complaint with FSR
39:49
sometimes is that it doesn't pedal so
39:51
well um and that's because it is an
39:53
active suspension design so just like
39:55
this guy here you'll be wanting to
39:56
toggle the re shock a little bit um to
39:58
get a little bit more climbing
40:00
performance um if you want to get a bit
40:02
more efficiency out of that suspension
40:04
design I think the stump jumper St is
40:06
also a super capable bike um this just
40:09
feels a little bit more of a monster um
40:13
and I think part of that is to do with
40:15
the fact that it is got a that it does
40:16
have a little bit more Reach This is a
40:18
450 mil reach on the medium 18.5 um so
40:21
reasonably long front center and uh with
40:24
that suspension design and those big
40:26
tires as well it does feel really
40:29
grounded really plush really uh really
40:32
stable you feel in the bike on The
40:34
Descent the stump jumper St is slightly
40:36
nippier um in my experience but it has
40:39
been a while since I've ridden that
40:40
stump jumper St I'd love to get my hands
40:42
on one of those uh one of the current
40:44
models to actually review and test
40:46
against this and all the other trail
40:48
bikes I'm riding at the moment so but
40:50
from from my limited experience on that
40:51
St that's how I would summarize it
40:53
compared to this fuel
40:55
ex um right good soul is saying does it
40:58
have a threaded BB this is a press fit
41:00
bottom bracket it's a pf92 oh he said uh
41:03
or creek fit
41:06
yeah um to be honest I've had no issues
41:08
with the bottom bracket um on this is a
41:10
demo bike that's had a lot of riding by
41:12
the way the bottom bracket's absolutely
41:14
fine I think press fit bottom brackets
41:15
get a really bad wrap because a lot of
41:17
early press fits were pretty and
41:20
they did Creak a lot and tolerances were
41:21
really low um and it meant that the cups
41:24
could actually shift in the frame and
41:25
that's where you get creaking and
41:27
cracking noises and they're horrible
41:29
tolerances over the last couple of years
41:30
have gone right up so generally we're
41:33
finding that there's less noise in the
41:35
first place they're wearing a lot better
41:38
um and uh in a lot of cases they do make
41:40
sense harder to work on though CU you
41:42
don't you can't just unthread it with
41:44
your regular holotech tool you do need a
41:46
kind of Slide Hammer to you know knock
41:48
the um the cups out so perhaps a little
41:50
less easy to work on for home mechanics
41:53
um Mark Smith is asking later on what's
41:55
the story with the Tre frame on on the
41:57
wall and the Fisher Jersey yeah i' I'd
41:59
love to give you the full story on that
42:01
but these don't belong to me these
42:02
belong to my friend Ben who owns this
42:04
Workshop there's a lot of Glory in here
42:06
including a Klein Mantra so um I've been
42:09
threatening to do a video of this
42:11
workshop for a little while now I think
42:12
we need to make it happen so I'll line
42:14
up of time with Ben we can do a bit of a
42:16
tour of all the Retro paraphernalia in
42:19
here cuz there's a lot of good stuff um
42:22
right there's so many questions coming
42:23
through um thanks for everyone who's
42:25
tuning in give us a like if thumb up if
42:27
you're enjoying this video tune is
42:29
saying hi what can you tell me about the
42:30
break Shimano MB 6000 on the ex8 next
42:34
Sunday will be my first ride on my new
42:36
bike right these are Shimano Dior brakes
42:39
um they're really good don't know if I
42:41
need to say much more than that they're
42:42
shanos um they feel like SLX they feel
42:45
like XT brakes they're solid they have
42:47
really good bite Point um they don't
42:49
have tool-free adjustment reach so you
42:51
need a 3 mm Allen 2.5 mm Allen key to
42:55
adjust the reach on these Leever so make
42:57
sure you have that tool with you if
42:59
you're going for a ride and you want to
43:01
adjust the leverage particularly on
43:03
those first couple of rides where you
43:04
get that sort of thing dialed in um so
43:06
that's one thing that they do miss out
43:08
on but great power we've got 180 mil
43:10
rotor on the front 180 mil rotor on the
43:12
back which is good times um if you
43:14
wanted more power you could potentially
43:15
put a 200 on the front um if you really
43:18
wanted but I think the 180 mix front and
43:20
rear with the Shimano duor brakes is
43:21
really good um no issues there
43:23
whatsoever JBL is saying hi there just
43:26
wondering what what the head angle is
43:28
you might have already said that in I
43:30
just tuned in well firstly thanks for
43:32
tuning in and welcome to fresh goods
43:34
Friday live or fresh goods Thursday
43:35
evening live um head angle on this there
43:38
are two head angles because there are
43:41
two geometry positions with the minnow
43:42
length so the head angle in the high
43:44
position which I've got it here is 67.7
43:47
De and if you kick it into the low
43:49
position that kicks back to
43:51
67° it also drops the bottom bracket
43:54
height by 10 mm now I've been riding
43:57
High position for uh for the for the
43:59
couple of rides that I've had on this
44:00
bike and I don't feel it needs to be
44:02
much slacker to be honest I actually
44:04
like the extra ground clearance as well
44:06
that you get when you go into that low
44:08
position and the head angle kicks to 67
44:10
10 mm lower bottom bracket height means
44:12
the pedals do get quite close to the
44:14
ground that's quite a lot 10 mm that the
44:16
pedals get close to the ground so bear
44:18
that in mind although a lot of
44:20
journalists like me kind of go oh if
44:22
there's a geometry adjuster we just put
44:24
it in the slack position and leave it
44:25
there um I had messed around with a
44:27
geometry chip on this on a previous ex9
44:30
test bike and to be honest that high
44:32
position in my experience for my riding
44:34
style and my Trails Works beautifully I
44:37
after messing around within a low
44:38
position which kind of really kicks
44:40
things back and it feels a bit Chopper
44:41
esque um I prefer it in that high
44:43
position but anyway it's there for you
44:45
to mess around with and like I said you
44:47
can put a longer Fork on this bike as
44:48
well so if you really want to Enduro it
44:50
up put a 140 mil Fork on it put that
44:53
geometry trip into low position um and
44:56
that thing will be pretty pretty rad
44:57
that's for sure um I just want to talk
44:59
about the Fox Float 34 forecon here oh
45:02
Wilfred saying hey I've got the 2017
45:05
model right on man I think the 2017 2018
45:09
yeah 2017 it's still the same frame
45:11
shape same geometry so this isn't a
45:13
brand new bike and as I said the reason
45:14
I wanted to test this was to see just
45:17
how whether it feels dated or not
45:19
because technically we've got bikes
45:21
coming out the moment the trans 29er
45:23
we've got the canyon neuron we got the
45:24
GT sensor uh we've got all sorts of
45:27
trail bikes in this 29er short travel
45:29
trail bike coming out so whether the fu
45:31
X feels a bit dated or not um I can
45:33
wholeheartedly confirm that is not the
45:36
case uh good Soul does that brake lever
45:38
adjustment affect the pads in the
45:40
caliper or are they independent things
45:41
they're completely independent where you
45:43
run the brake lever reach when you
45:45
adjust that little bolt up there doesn't
45:47
affect the pads on the rotor so once you
45:49
get your caliper set up on the rotor you
45:51
shouldn't really have to touch that too
45:52
much um the brake lever reach is
45:55
independent so don't worry about that
45:57
there um right so I was going to say
45:59
about the fox 34 float Fork this has got
46:01
the grip damper in it this is called the
46:03
Rhythm Fork it's designed as Fox's cheap
46:07
option so the higher end Fox Forks come
46:10
with the fit for damper which is the
46:11
sealed fit damper this is an open bath
46:14
or a semi-open bath damper called the
46:16
grip damper rebound adjustment down the
46:18
bottom we've got compression adjustment
46:19
up the top the spring assembly the Evol
46:22
spring assembly is the same so whether
46:24
you get the gold factory kushima model
46:26
or the this entry level 34 Rhythm the
46:29
spring assembly is the same that's the
46:30
Evol airspring and Evol stands for
46:32
expanded volume so it's a high volume
46:34
design with high volume negative chamber
46:37
and it gives you a really plush feel the
46:39
sensitivity on this Fork is really good
46:42
now I noticed yesterday when I was
46:43
getting a little bit too Rad Rad for me
46:46
probably not rad for you but rad for me
46:48
um on certain sections of trail I did
46:50
actually bottom out this Fork once or
46:52
twice now I cracked it open um no I
46:56
didn't break I mean when I got back to
46:58
the workshop let me stipulate I opened
47:01
up the top cap to have a look inside to
47:03
see how many volume spaces were inside
47:06
out of the boxes only has one volume
47:08
spacer one of those green Fox volume
47:11
spacers now that's important to note
47:13
because the giant trance 29 that I'm
47:16
also testing at the moment comes with
47:18
three so this only has one and the giant
47:21
has three they're the same Fork they're
47:23
the same 13 mil travel 29in Fork grip
47:26
damper Evol air spring Fox Float 34
47:28
Rhythm exactly the same but the way the
47:30
fork feels is completely different
47:33
because the giant um has a much smaller
47:36
volume and this has a much higher volume
47:39
so that's something to bear in mind if
47:41
you own one of these bikes or you're
47:42
looking at buying one um bear in mind
47:45
that you may need to add volume spaces
47:47
into the airspring to get it to ramp up
47:49
more because yesterday I actually crunch
47:52
full travel a couple of times it wasn't
47:54
dramatic but definitely the O-ring was
47:56
all the way up the top of the crown and
47:59
to be honest that doesn't happen to me
48:00
too often I always like to have a bit of
48:02
travel in reserve on the fork for really
48:05
like Panic you know your pants
48:07
moments um but this one I was able to
48:09
kiss full travel a couple of times so if
48:12
this were my bike I'd be putting a
48:13
second volume spacer inside this
48:16
airspring um so that's something worth
48:18
bearing in mind particularly if you're a
48:19
heavier Rider If you're sort of 90 100
48:21
kilos plus you're going to be wanting to
48:23
put more volume spaces in here to give
48:25
you more ramp up and I will say the same
48:27
thing for the rear shock now I didn't
48:29
bottom out this rear shock I used full
48:31
travel multiple times but there was
48:33
never any moment where this travel
48:35
crunched where I felt the shock kind of
48:37
hit and make contact that never happened
48:40
but I use full travel plenty of times
48:42
which is to me is a sign of a really
48:44
well-tuned suspension design bear in
48:46
mind I'm about 70 kilos with riding gear
48:48
though I'm fairly light um on the
48:50
lighter side of the spectrum so heavier
48:52
Riders who are looking for a bit more
48:55
progression a bit more ramp up you will
48:57
want to consider adding a volume spacer
49:00
a plastic volume space in the rear shock
49:02
to give it that bottom out support
49:04
particularly when you're hitting drop
49:05
offs and jumps you want that kind of
49:07
ramp up so you're not crunching through
49:09
the travel so for me the setup has been
49:11
really good on this bike as I said I
49:13
probably want to add a token or maybe
49:14
even half a token into the fork air
49:17
chamber the rear shock feels beautiful
49:19
but if you are a heavier more aggressive
49:21
Rider you may want to consider and if
49:23
it's something you're not familiar with
49:24
talk to your local bike shop where you
49:25
got this bike from or where you're
49:27
getting it from um have a yarn to them
49:29
about um Air volume spaces cuz it's a
49:31
really quick and easy thing to do when
49:33
you know what you're doing and it makes
49:34
a big difference on the trail and the
49:37
reason I mentioned that is um uh one of
49:39
my industry peers Tom Marvin who works
49:41
for bike Raider he reviewed this bike
49:43
last year and he was very glowing in his
49:45
review but one of the things he
49:46
mentioned was about running through the
49:48
suspension travel Tom is a bigger bloke
49:50
than I am and I think um in terms of
49:52
that volume that this um the air fork
49:54
and the air shock have out of the box it
49:56
is quite high volume so if you're a
49:58
bigger Rider a more aggressive Rider
50:00
you're probably going to meet full
50:01
travel more quickly and uh you want to
50:04
consider putting volume spaces inside
50:05
the fork potentially in the rear shock
50:07
just to give it a bit more support for
50:09
me though it was absolutely dialed it
50:11
was fantastic uh right we've got a few
50:13
more questions coming through here good
50:15
Soul saying how comes the rear shock
50:16
fashion is going back to coil springs
50:18
yet Forks seemingly aren't is it just a
50:21
matter of time great question coil
50:23
springs are really hot right now um
50:26
we've got Brands like Cane Creek and MRP
50:29
um formula as well have just released um
50:32
a prototype of a coil sprung Fork we've
50:35
got um Brands like well Fox Rock shocks
50:37
K Creek MRP as well um doing coil sprung
50:40
rear shocks as well are they coming back
50:43
I would say yes I say we're seeing a bit
50:45
more pickup from those smaller Brands um
50:48
but there are rumors that rock shocks is
50:50
working on a coil sprung lyric Fork now
50:53
if a Big Brand now if a Big Brand I
50:56
should say excuse excuse me like Fox and
50:57
rock shocks um look at putting coil
50:59
springs back onto trail bikes um once
51:03
those big Brands go to it then I would
51:05
say that the the trend is going to have
51:06
a lot more momentum so um look in look
51:09
out for that it's called the lyric
51:11
ultimate I actually haven't read that
51:12
fork I haven't seen any information on
51:14
it I'm going off Andy's uh kind of spy
51:17
shots that we've been seeing online the
51:19
last couple of weeks so uh
51:23
right uh JC I went with the 2019 STP
51:26
jumper instead wonder if I made the
51:28
wrong move and Matt love is saying uh
51:31
who's answering JC's question no you
51:33
made a good choice with the Stumpy
51:34
better than the fu ex anyway at least
51:36
that's my opinion um yeah I don't think
51:38
you made a mistake the stump jumper is a
51:40
cracking bike that's a really really
51:43
good bike I think specialized hit the
51:44
nail in the head with that new stump
51:46
jumper both the long travel and the
51:47
short travel and the Evo which is a bit
51:49
of a beast um shout out to uh the news
51:52
story we had on the website a couple of
51:54
days ago the Evo carbon uh Stump Jump
51:56
evoc carbon has just come out you can
51:58
read that on single TRW world.com and uh
52:00
and I'm also going to point out we're
52:01
going to give a wave to all the people
52:03
who tuning in we've got loads of people
52:04
tuning in live welcome to the live video
52:06
um if you're enjoying this give us a
52:07
thumbs up it is a live video so you can
52:09
ask me any questions you've got in the
52:11
comment section below um and I'll do my
52:13
best to answer them we've been talking
52:14
about this fuel ex8 29er test bike um or
52:18
sorry demo bike I should say because I'm
52:20
not reviewing this but I did want to
52:22
test it and give you guys a bit of
52:23
feedback on how this bike rides cuz a
52:25
lot of people have been asking about how
52:27
this bike compares to other review bikes
52:29
that are been testing so the Marita 120
52:32
the giant trance 29 and the canyon
52:34
neuron CF now the I just want to S away
52:38
a little bit because there's a really
52:39
important note that I want to talk about
52:41
this bike and I just remembered cuz I
52:42
saw it on my cheat sheet here Tre has a
52:45
has a design on this bike called the
52:47
knock block now does anyone know what
52:49
the knock block does um drop let me know
52:52
in the comment section below but you'll
52:54
notice that the fuela the remedy and the
52:56
slash all have this kind of straight
52:59
down Che so rather than the fork kind of
53:01
curving up and then dropping down and
53:03
curving again sort of snaking its way
53:05
down from the head tube to the bottom
53:06
bracket this is pretty much a straight
53:09
down tube it curves a little bit at the
53:11
end but it's it's mostly straight up
53:13
here now with modern boost Forks what's
53:17
happening is the forks are getting wider
53:19
so you can see this Fork here if you
53:21
visualize this the fork is actually
53:24
getting wider um and that's to
53:25
accommodate The Wider 110 mm boost Hub
53:29
spacing on the front but it's also to
53:31
get more Tire clearance so these these
53:33
forks will now fit a 2.8 in comfortably
53:36
um and that's crazy because be in the
53:39
past Plus Tires um have required a spe a
53:42
special Fork a very specific Fork now
53:45
Fox and rock shocks are just just
53:46
designing all of their standard Forks to
53:48
accommodate Plus Tires so this will
53:51
accommodate Plus Tires in here in this
53:53
chassis but it does mean the whole Crown
53:55
is getting further apart part it's
53:56
getting wider and wider and wider and
53:58
what happens when the fork Crown gets
54:00
wider and wider well when you turn the
54:02
fork that wider stanion and the crown is
54:06
going to make contact with the top tube
54:09
uh the top of the down tube isn't it so
54:11
the wider Fork um these wider modern
54:14
boost Forks they're they're causing more
54:17
issues with the fork kind of potentially
54:19
ramming into the frame so the solution
54:22
to this is to have like a curvy kind of
54:24
frame that gives you clearance around
54:26
the crown on the fork and the down tube
54:28
so you don't smash the down tube now
54:31
that's all well and good but Trek
54:32
decided we don't want to do that um
54:34
maybe they decided it looks a bit naff I
54:37
don't know um the kind of curvy tube
54:39
they say it's about stiffness so this
54:41
this from the head tube down to the
54:42
bottom bracket we've basically got a
54:44
straight down tube and they call that
54:45
the straight shot down tube they say
54:47
it's all about stiffness I think it
54:49
looks great but the problem with that
54:51
straight down tube is you end up with
54:53
clearance issues between the fork crown
54:55
and the down tube so if this didn't have
54:58
this special stem this Crown would go
55:01
careering into the down tube if you
55:03
crashed and you you probably damag the
55:05
frame you probably damage the fork you
55:07
damag yourself as well in the process it
55:09
would just generally not be a good time
55:12
so what they've done is they've created
55:13
a special stem and headset and it's
55:15
called the knock block and I think a few
55:18
people have guessed this here yes a good
55:19
Soul said is it to stop the bar swinging
55:21
around and causing damage yes absolutely
55:24
all the forks yes are good Souls onto it
55:26
too the knock block system is an
55:29
integration with a chip in the frame a
55:31
headset and the stem and it's basically
55:34
a keyed um stop in the uh in the headset
55:37
and uh and the frame so the idea is that
55:40
I'm going to visualize this that is the
55:43
maximum travel that the fork will rotate
55:45
around it won't turn any further than
55:47
that and it and it happens on the other
55:49
side as well so you can you can still
55:51
turn the handlebars but they're limited
55:53
as to how far they'll go excuse me um so
55:57
if you're a fan of xops and kind of
55:59
spinning 360s on the bike this is not
56:01
the bike for you it's impossible to do
56:03
good Sal I think Canyon have something
56:05
similar they certainly do they call it
56:07
the ipu the impact protection unit
56:10
however on the track bike we've got here
56:13
it's not just about the shifter and
56:16
brake lever hitting the top tube it's
56:17
about the fork Crown hitting the frame
56:19
so we've got a big rubber bump stop here
56:21
and this is a fail safe in case
56:23
something fails with the knock block
56:25
system you've got this big rubber bumper
56:26
here to protect the frame from the fork
56:29
Crown now the KN block system is very
56:31
very clever um from this regard however
56:34
it is kind of annoying I experienced
56:36
that this morning when I went to put
56:38
this bike in the back of the car
56:40
obviously you can't rotate The Handlebar
56:42
the full Direction so if you're putting
56:44
the bike in the back of the car with
56:45
wheels on or wheels off or whatever it's
56:47
a bit awkward to do sometimes so there's
56:50
a mild annoyance there um for for that
56:53
also this is worth noting if if you want
56:56
to run your own handle Baron stem say if
56:58
you don't like the current handle Baron
57:00
stem on this and to be honest I'm not a
57:02
huge fan 750 mm wide bars the stem is 60
57:06
mm long If This Were My Bike I'd be
57:08
looking at putting on 780 bars for sure
57:11
and maybe bringing that stem back to 50
57:13
maybe even sort of 40 45 now bontreger
57:16
do sell these knock block stems um
57:19
anywhere from 40 mm up to 110 mm so
57:22
there are loads of options from
57:23
bontreger to change the stem and that's
57:25
a very special knock block stem however
57:28
you can fit a regular stem you don't
57:31
have to run Bon trager's knock block
57:33
stem um so if you've got your own like
57:35
rental bar and stem or you've got an MV
57:37
cockpit or you've got you know a nice
57:40
daty stem or a spank handlebar whatever
57:42
and you want to run that on this bike
57:43
you prefer to run wider bar shorter
57:45
stand whatever you can do that however
57:48
there is a special part that you will
57:50
require and I've raised this point
57:52
because it's alarmingly
57:54
expensive it's a special headset spacer
57:57
and it's a locking headset spacer um I
58:00
assume it's just called the knock block
58:02
headset spacer or something like that
58:04
and what it does um is it Keys into the
58:07
other spaces and into the headset so um
58:10
the idea is to retain that kind of
58:13
stopping function um that the knock
58:15
block provides to stop the bars and the
58:17
fork from careering into the down tube
58:20
that
58:21
spacer sells for 62 Australian dollar I
58:25
couldn't quite believe that when I found
58:27
out yesterday $62 it's literally a
58:30
headset spacer with a pinch bolt on it
58:33
so it clamps physically clamps onto the
58:35
steerer tube and that's uh that's what
58:37
gives you uh that fixed kind of indexed
58:40
um position good Soul LOL typical bike
58:43
industry I know it's it's Bonkers I
58:46
think that's a part that should come
58:47
with every one of these bikes because as
58:49
much as uh this is a the handar stem
58:52
does the job it's meant to um I think
58:54
it's nice to have the option to run a
58:55
different brand handlebar and stem
58:57
rather than be locked into a certain
58:58
standard of course you're not locked
59:00
into a certain standard you can run
59:02
whatever bar and stem you want on here
59:04
but if you're looking at buying one of
59:05
these bikes or you already own one and
59:06
you're thinking you want to put on a
59:07
different bar and stem add on$ 62
59:10
Australian dollars which I assume is
59:11
probably around 30 to
59:13
35 for a little locking headset spacer
59:17
um which will allow you to run a
59:18
different stem um other than the stock
59:20
Bond Trager knock block system so I just
59:22
wanted to point that out cuz I think
59:24
that's frankly quite ridiculous
59:28
um I thought that part was going to be
59:30
about a quarter of that price but it's
59:31
not that's what it is um but hey I'm not
59:34
Tre it's not my decision to make um but
59:37
there you go a little bit of tidbit of
59:38
information for you there all right so
59:40
uh we got loads of people tuning in here
59:42
welcome and thank you for joining me for
59:44
the live Q&A on this trick fuel ex8 demo
59:47
bike um I've gone basically gone through
59:50
all the details I possibly can on this
59:52
bike um let me just run you through a
59:54
couple of things that I like and what I
59:56
don't like about this bike so what I
59:58
don't like about this bike um I'd like
1:00:00
it to have a bit more drop on this
1:00:01
dropper post this is 125 mil on the
1:00:04
medium I'm sounding like a broken record
1:00:06
here um but it would be nice to have a
1:00:08
little bit more drop on this bike
1:00:10
particularly because you can get into
1:00:11
really steep hairy situations on this
1:00:13
bike that you wouldn't perhaps wouldn't
1:00:15
think you would on a 130 mil travel
1:00:16
trail bike so I think a bit more drop
1:00:19
would be really nice on there I just
1:00:20
mentioned before about the bar and the
1:00:22
stem 750 mil by today's standards it's
1:00:25
too narrow it's actually narrower than
1:00:27
that 760 that came on the canyon neuron
1:00:29
and even on that bike I said it's too
1:00:31
narrow just put 780s or 800s on let us
1:00:34
cut the bars down all right you know you
1:00:36
can make a bar narrow but you can't make
1:00:37
it wider so just you know bite the
1:00:39
bullet and put some wide bars on this
1:00:41
bike this thing is an absolute rocket
1:00:43
ship downhill it deserves wider bars
1:00:45
than this so that's something I'm I'm
1:00:47
not a big fan of um on this bike so I
1:00:50
would be looking at um putting on a
1:00:52
wider handlebar if it was mine
1:00:53
personally um anything else I don't like
1:00:56
on this bike not really aside from that
1:00:58
the spec is dialed the tires are great
1:01:00
the wheels are nice and wide they come
1:01:02
with tubless Rim strips fitted all you
1:01:05
need to do is add the tubless valve and
1:01:07
some sealant and these wheels are ready
1:01:08
to go tubeless so that's a big double
1:01:10
thumbs up um the suspension quality I
1:01:13
think that's the biggest uh the biggest
1:01:15
positive of this bike that rear
1:01:17
suspension the fork is fantastic as well
1:01:19
very balanced balanced is a word that
1:01:22
I've used um with other track bikes that
1:01:24
I've reviewed in the past and full
1:01:26
suspension tracks I should add um and
1:01:28
that's the case here the the front
1:01:30
suspension and the rear suspension they
1:01:31
work beautifully well together the rear
1:01:34
suspension in particular it's super
1:01:36
active that's whether you're on the
1:01:37
brakes whether you're off the brakes
1:01:39
whether you're charging into Rock
1:01:40
Gardens um or you're trying to climb up
1:01:43
technical sections you've got good
1:01:45
usability out of that compression switch
1:01:47
on the rear shock gives you a load of
1:01:48
Versatility for giving that firmer kind
1:01:50
of position if you're riding smoother
1:01:52
Trails but with the reactive damper and
1:01:54
that very fast rapid Breakaway where all
1:01:57
of a sudden you go from a firm shock to
1:01:58
an open active shock um gives it a load
1:02:01
of Versatility you can just leave it in
1:02:03
one position and ride and forget about
1:02:04
it um Derek is saying the Tre fuel is a
1:02:07
smashing bike very underrated super fast
1:02:10
and hoppy totally agree I think it's
1:02:12
underrated because this is the third
1:02:14
year this bike has been in this current
1:02:16
configuration so maybe it's maybe the
1:02:18
marketing machine has gone a little bit
1:02:19
quiet on this bike but this this is a
1:02:21
cracking trail bike it's so fast it's so
1:02:26
confident downhill um great suspension
1:02:28
great tires um yeah very very confident
1:02:31
very very confident if you if you want a
1:02:33
confidence inspiring bike um but you
1:02:36
just want a trail bike you don't want a
1:02:37
full-blown Enduro race bike you don't
1:02:39
want a cross country race bike put this
1:02:41
on your list this is a this is a really
1:02:42
good bike um good salt is it available
1:02:45
in any other colors oh we covered that
1:02:47
before so this is the stealth black
1:02:48
option but there is a beautiful cherry
1:02:50
red option if you prefer something that
1:02:52
doesn't look um I don't know as as
1:02:56
boring as this is that harsh I don't
1:02:58
know black bikes tend to sell really
1:02:59
well so um so um yeah so Tre provide two
1:03:03
color options in a lot of their popular
1:03:05
models so in this ex8 you've got the
1:03:07
full black or you've got the cherry red
1:03:08
so there are options there um yeah so I
1:03:11
think I've kind of covered everything
1:03:13
there and uh I think I might probably
1:03:15
leave it there and I might go for
1:03:16
another ride on this cuz I really want
1:03:17
to ride it again um I hope you guys have
1:03:20
enjoyed if You' watching this give me a
1:03:22
thumbs up if you've enjoyed the video
1:03:24
video if you've enjoyed the video sorry
1:03:26
I've been speaking a million miles a
1:03:28
minute and uh yeah I'm a little I'm
1:03:31
getting a little bit tongue tied here so
1:03:32
apologies for that uh Ron is just saying
1:03:35
I I just bought the 2018 frame set nice
1:03:37
one uh let us know what you're going to
1:03:39
build it up with I'd love to know um but
1:03:42
yes if you've enjoyed watching this
1:03:43
video give us a thumbs up consider
1:03:44
subscribing if you haven't already
1:03:46
subscribed to single track um I've got a
1:03:48
lot of videos I'm working on at the
1:03:50
moment um as I said I have a brand new
1:03:52
test bike that just turned up yesterday
1:03:55
or Yer today and um I'm going to be
1:03:57
talking about that bike next week so
1:03:59
we're going to try and do these live
1:04:00
videos every Friday morning Australia
1:04:02
time um if you're over the other side of
1:04:04
the world that might be Thursday evening
1:04:06
or Thursday in the afternoon um so yes I
1:04:09
will be talking about a brand new trail
1:04:11
bike that's joining the uh the test Fray
1:04:15
um so we'll be showing you that next
1:04:17
week so stay tuned for that one um and I
1:04:20
think I've got another test bike turning
1:04:21
up after that so um if anyone wants to
1:04:24
