I was keen on an all-day shoe, the likes of which I could comfortably pound over the off-the-bike rocks and steps of this September’s 3 Peaks Cyclocross. As you’re likely to figure out, the type of stiff sole that suits parkland, mud and the odd dismount doesn’t cut it on the 3 (or 4, or 5…) hours of hell the likes of me put ourselves through every September.
I’ve ridden with a good selection of shoes over too many years I’d care to remember, but know that this race suits a runner’s feet, and it’s not only trudging up the hills. Some of the high-speed descents include quick dismounts for impossible steps, too-gnarly rocks, and the odd river or two.
The Mavic Crossride SL have what I consider to be the softest tread pattern on the market. Mavic’s Contragrip® is the best all-over grip you can imagine. Without studs, they still cut in to what’s there. Come muddy winter time though and you’ll obviously be wanting the extra help that studs bring.
Over tests I have found them an incredibly comfortable fit and the Ergo Fit 3D OrthoLite® insole gives great cushioning and comfort. The Ergo Comfort+ tongue insert and well padded heel fabric increases instep comfort and both dry well.
A great all-rounder and all-day shoe.
An all-rounder: The Crossride SL Elite is not a dedicated ‘cross shoe, but a comfortable mountain bike shoe is sometimes required for longer days out.
