hello everyone this is will here from
0:01
singletrack magazine we're here at Fort
0:03
William world cup and we've been
0:06
checking out a lot of the racing action
0:07
you'll see riders actually out on course
0:08
today practicing but we're going to take
0:11
you through something else this is brand
0:13
new xtr from Shimano so this was
0:16
released only a week ago the Navas mesto
0:18
cross country World Cup round this is
0:21
the first time we've got our hands our
0:24
our grubby hands on some of the new
0:27
components so we're gonna give you a bit
0:28
of a closer look got two bikes set up
0:29
here one with the XT our race groups
0:32
that we've also got the enduro group set
0:34
on the left-hand side here so come in
0:37
and I'll give you a bit of a look at
0:38
this this race group set here so the big
0:40
news of course in case you've been
0:42
living under a rock the past week
0:43
Shimano has gone 12 speed with new xtr
0:46
so we have a 12 week set here look at
0:49
this guy so this is the smaller cassette
0:51
option there are going to be actually
0:53
three cassette options this is the
0:54
smaller option it's 10 to 45 tooth so 12
0:58
speed 10 2014 5 on the biggest so a nice
1:01
tight cluster this is gonna be probably
1:04
more suitable for races whether that's
1:06
enduro or cross-country race who might
1:09
not need as big of a range but perhaps
1:12
want that nice smooth kind of gear
1:14
changes all the way through and less
1:16
interruption to their cadence as well
1:18
you can see we've got the new 12 speed
1:20
rear derailleur on here as well big
1:22
chunky thing carbon fiber jockey wheel
1:24
cage here bigger police so those have
1:26
actually increased in size and this is a
1:30
nice short cage option there will be a
1:33
longer cage option because Shimano will
1:34
still be offering to buy options with
1:36
xtr and there is a long cage version if
1:39
you're gonna run a double on the front
1:41
speaking of the front let's have a look
1:43
at this brand new crank set this is
1:45
absolutely gorgeous XT are hollow
1:47
aluminium crank set still using a hollow
1:51
steel xx formula spindles so no baby 13
1:53
opf 30 business here this is a standard
1:57
24 mil steel spindle it's gone to a
1:59
spider and sorry
2:01
it's ditched the spider design of the
2:03
last XT our crank set has gone to a
2:06
direct mount chain ring so this has
2:07
helped save a bit of weight it also
2:09
allows this crank set to be changed
2:11
between one by and two by setups
2:13
so very very neat there we've also got
2:15
while you're down here Andy actually
2:16
I'll show you these new XD our race
2:19
pedals these are really nice you can see
2:21
they've been pared down to the absolute
2:23
minimum possible still an SPD compatible
2:26
pedal and based on the current XT our
2:30
race pedal but basically just chiseled
2:32
away for to reduce weight they're a
2:34
little bit thinner as well so a little
2:36
bit shorter stack height on that one
2:38
will go up to the the cockpit perhaps up
2:41
here so we've got brand new XT our brake
2:43
levers these are lighter you'll notice
2:45
that the clamp for the brake lever is
2:47
now in the middle of the brake lever
2:49
whereas before it was on the end now
2:51
what they've the reason they've done
2:53
this is if actually if you get in here
2:55
you can see there's a brace for the
2:57
brake lever
2:57
so as you're tugging on that lever when
3:01
you're really on the anchors pushing
3:03
really really hard the brake lever is
3:04
braced against the handlebar it makes
3:06
for a stiffer structure means there's
3:08
less flex through the lever body when
3:10
you're really hammering on the on the
3:12
brake levers so very nice these are the
3:14
race levers so you've got carbon fiber
3:15
lever blade they're paired down to the
3:18
absolute bare minimum possible so
3:19
there's no adjusters or or any sort of
3:23
funky extra there's no servo wave system
3:26
and here it's been paired down to the
3:27
absolute bare minimum as far as the
3:31
other end of the brakes or just pull
3:32
this front wheel out here so you can get
3:33
a closer look at that new brake caliper
3:36
down the bottom this is the two piston
3:37
brake calipers Shimano will be offering
3:39
two and four piston brake calipers with
3:42
the new xtr group set this is the
3:43
lighter race model so two piston smaller
3:46
brake pads these are the same brake pads
3:48
you'll find in a Jew race or all tegra
3:50
Road disk caliper and so if you're a
3:52
cross-country race to a marathon racer
3:54
you are the light as possible setup and
3:57
you're not as concerned about raw brute
3:59
power then that's the setup you're gonna
4:02
want so that's the XT our race group set
4:05
we'll have a bit of a look at the enduro
4:06
group set this is likely going to be the
4:08
one that most people I think most
4:10
British mountain bikers will be very
4:11
excited about because let's have a look
4:13
at the centerpiece this huge cassette
4:15
this is also 12 speed but this starts at
4:18
10 tooth and goes all the way up to 51
4:21
so who have how do you like that there's
4:23
your 12 speed 10 to 51 cassette
4:27
now like the other xtr cassette the 10
4:29
to 45 to get that 10 to throw kit
4:32
Shimano's had to create its own new
4:34
freehub body standard yes I can hear the
4:36
groans from from the internet it's very
4:39
similar in terms of compared to the
4:41
existing Shimano freehub body it's just
4:43
a bit smaller in diameter and the idea
4:46
is to allow that 10 tooth decay on there
4:48
the splines are different as well it's
4:49
called a micro spline freehub the spines
4:51
are different and it's designed to take
4:53
as you can probably tell with that huge
4:55
51 tooth sprocket on the back of that
4:57
cassette that's going to encounter some
4:59
pretty serious loads some pretty high
5:01
torque when you're climbing
5:04
you know it'll enable you to climb up
5:06
some pretty steep stuff so you can
5:07
imagine there's a lot of force gonna be
5:08
going through this and therefore the
5:10
freehub body so the splines have been
5:12
designed to accommodate that extra force
5:14
there now that freehub body right now
5:16
the micro spline system it is a design
5:19
owned by Shimano at the moment as far as
5:22
we're aware DT Swiss is the only company
5:24
and that is going to be licensing that
5:27
design so that they'll be able to make
5:28
compatible freehub bodies as to other
5:30
brands coming on board we'll just have
5:31
to wait and see and one of the other
5:33
features inside this rear hub is a
5:36
silent freehub mechanism so Shimano
5:39
drawing on the 1980s science fiction
5:43
movies has brought out a design called
5:46
silence SC y ly NCE
5:49
I think I would sit on the back of that
5:52
one anyway correct me on that if I'm
5:53
wrong but basically when you coast on
5:56
this bike I'm just gonna lift up the
5:58
rear wheel and show you
6:06
so it's dead silent it's basically a
6:09
ratchet system not not dissimilar to a
6:11
DT Swiss star ratchet so it's it's
6:14
completely different to an existing Paul
6:16
spring and Paul system in other brands
6:19
and Shimano's previous hub designs but
6:22
basically the the clutch actually
6:24
disengages when you've really
6:25
freewheeling which is why it's dead
6:27
quiet it's silent and there's very
6:29
little if any drag when you're coasting
6:31
then when you engage or when you pedal
6:33
sorry the clutch engages and that's
6:35
where you get your your drive from so
6:38
very very clever design silenced rear
6:41
hub on the back of the XT our brand new
6:43
microphone rear hub we also have the
6:45
same brand new XT our cranks here again
6:48
this is the direct mount chain ring here
6:50
we've got multiple options 32 that - 38
6:53
I believe new chain ring designs so this
6:56
is Shimano zone chain ring design so you
6:58
ideally you don't need to run these with
7:00
a chain guide though Shimano is making a
7:02
lightweight upper chain guide we don't
7:04
have one here to show you but they are
7:06
making a lightweight chain guide for
7:07
racers who just want that extra security
7:09
but this chain here it's it's it's sort
7:12
of a narrow wide design essentially
7:14
thick thin tooth profile it's really
7:16
hard to show in video but on the on the
7:19
wide ring on the wide teeth here there's
7:21
an extra chamfered edge it's really
7:23
difficult to make out but then actually
7:26
butts up against or sort of Nestle's in
7:28
with the roller and the outer link in
7:31
the chain so it creates a really smooth
7:33
full contact design we're told this
7:35
reduces noise and and also aids chain
7:38
retention so nice little detail there
7:41
right so we're talking about the cranks
7:44
before there is a new design for the way
7:47
that these mount onto the bike so they
7:50
still run a 24 mil steel spindle all the
7:52
way through but gone of the pinch bolts
7:54
of the previous hollow tech design now
7:58
we've got one big bolt in here and that
8:00
holds the non-drive crank arm to the
8:03
axle and we have this guy here this is a
8:05
preload collar so you can actually turn
8:07
this and this is on a on a thread which
8:09
is part of the crank arm and that will
8:11
actually put preload on the bearings or
8:13
reduce preload off the bearings so you
8:15
can use that basically as the the bottom
8:18
bracket beds in or needs adjusting you
8:20
can use this preload ring to do that so
8:23
very nice indeed
8:25
we'll move up to the cockpit here I want
8:28
to show you this because this is quite
8:29
neat if you come around this side
8:30
actually Andy this is the 12 speed
8:32
trigger shifter here so we've got two
8:34
paddles here the design is the actuation
8:37
is exactly the same as you'll find on
8:39
existing Shimano shifters but check this
8:41
out this is a little rubber paddle
8:43
texture here so that piece there
8:45
that's rubber so you've got a nice soft
8:48
textured surface there for your thumb on
8:50
both the the up shifter and the down
8:52
shifter this is 12 speed obviously we've
8:56
got the new ice pack evie standard so
8:58
you've got plenty of lateral adjustment
8:59
for the shifter and also adjusts on a
9:02
plenty of angular rotation as well to
9:06
mount the shifter to the same bracket as
9:08
the brake lever so very neatly
9:10
integrated there the trail brake levers
9:13
we've got a few difference here
9:14
differences here first and foremost
9:16
we've got servo wave inside so there's a
9:18
roller cam system in here and that's
9:19
designed to increase pad movement in
9:22
that initial part as soon as you tug on
9:24
the brake lever you get the pads closing
9:26
in on the disc rotor very quickly and
9:29
then tapering off slightly to help
9:31
improve modulation through the stroke we
9:33
do have free stroke adjustment and tool
9:35
free reach adjustment so loads of
9:37
adjustability in the trail brake and
9:40
these are designed to run with four
9:42
piston brake calipers so this is
9:44
brand-new for xtr now we have seen this
9:47
in the xt level and now we've got it the
9:49
xt are level as well four Pistons in
9:51
there those use the same style or the
9:55
same shape of brake pad as the existing
9:57
st. and z brake calipers the piston
9:59
diameters are exactly the same as the
10:01
st. and z brake calipers so we're told
10:04
there's a 20% increase in power over the
10:06
two piston existing to pastand xt our
10:09
NXT brakes there's also some fancy new
10:11
finned brake pads in there too and I
10:14
guess the last thing we'll show you on
10:16
this bike here is down here at the
10:18
cranks we did skip over this before this
10:21
is the new trail pedal so we saw the XT
10:23
our race pedal on the other bike this is
10:25
the XT our trail pedal again slim down
10:29
over the the previous XT our trail pedal
10:31
we've got more textured panels on the
10:33
backside of
10:34
age here these are all machined in
10:35
beautifully machined that's designed to
10:38
give you more traction on the back of
10:40
your shoe when you're clipped in
10:41
so you've still got that cage all the
10:43
way around but just more platform so the
10:45
idea being when you're running a softer
10:48
kind of trail shoe with a rubber sole
10:49
that you get more contact on here more
10:52
stability less kind of less kind of
10:54
wiggle through your shoe especially left
10:56
to right so so that is the xcr trail
10:59
pedal very nice a little bit slimmer
11:00
compared to the the current version so
11:03
there you go that's a bit of a look at
11:05
the new xtr group set from Shimano we've
11:07
had a bit of a look at the race group
11:08
set and the enduro group set these are
11:11
both set up as one by as I said Shimano
11:12
will be offering to buy systems as well
11:14
if you want to see more information
11:16
about the xtr groups that jump on single
11:18
track worldcom for more information
11:19
otherwise we'll get back to the Fort
11:22
William World Cup we hope you're
11:23
enjoying the coverage thanks guys
