Point the bike downhill and oh my
0:01
goodness, it really does eat things up.
0:03
It means that the back end is super
0:05
super quiet. Mainstream brand, this is,
0:07
you know, pretty progressive, really.
0:17
Hey everyone, this is Andy from
0:18
Singletrack Magazine and today we're
0:20
looking at a all new bike from
0:21
Specialized. It's the Specialized
0:23
Stumpjumper Evo Pro Carbon. This is the
0:26
27.5 inch version of the bike. Now, if
0:29
you've been keeping an eye on
0:31
Specialized for the past year or so or
0:32
watching or reading Will's reviews,
0:35
you'll have seen that he actually tested
0:37
the alloy version of this bike last
0:39
year.
0:39
So, the idea is the same. We've got a
0:42
longer reach, we've got slacker head
0:43
angle, but this time it's made of a all
0:45
carbon. We've got a carbon front
0:47
triangle and the carbon rear end. And
0:49
Specialized call this a fact 11M frame
0:53
and that means it's got some really nice
0:55
features and it has a really lovely
0:56
naked finish. So, features include
0:59
internal cable routing and hose routing
1:01
for your dropper post gears and all
1:03
others of the gobbings.
1:06
You've got a lovely little SWAT door
1:08
here just below the bottle cage. This
1:10
opens up and you have room for a an
1:12
inner tube or snacks or other bits and
1:14
bobs. We've got a really cool asymmetric
1:17
rear end on here. We've seen a few
1:18
different bike brands use this idea, but
1:20
Specialized are using it here. We've got
1:22
a on the drive side we've got this
1:24
strut, but on the non-drive side there's
1:26
nothing there. It's a really cool idea
1:28
and you it means you from either end
1:30
either side it looks a bit different.
1:32
So, really lovely design feature.
1:34
At the back here just on the chainstay
1:36
we've got this rubberized chain guide
1:38
and this is actually similar to some of
1:40
the downhill teams are using this year
1:42
and last year and it does provide really
1:45
good damping for that chain. It means
1:47
that the back end is super super quiet.
1:49
In fact, I've taken this bike out for a
1:51
quick ride on a Friday and it is really
1:54
really quiet. Probably one of the most
1:56
quiet bikes I've ridden for a long time.
1:59
So, spec-wise uh you know, feature-wise
2:01
we've got 150 mm of travel front and
2:04
rear and on this pro level bike we've
2:06
got a Fox 36 Performance Elite fork on
2:10
the front and we've got a Fox DHX2 coil
2:14
on the rear. Now, the coil shock on this
2:16
bike does have a lockout, so climbing is
2:19
a bit more efficient. But open that up,
2:22
point the bike downhill and oh my
2:23
goodness, it really does eat things up.
2:25
It's super super supple, really lovely
2:28
rear suspension and as I've mentioned
2:30
extremely quiet. This bike will actually
2:33
tackle things that you wouldn't think
2:34
were capable other than on a downhill
2:36
bike. It's, you know, really really
2:38
capable.
2:39
Uh obviously being such capable bike and
2:41
a fast bike for that matter, we've got
2:43
pretty progressive geometry on here. And
2:46
I mean, this is progressive for
2:48
Specialized, but it's also progressive
2:50
for most other brands, too.
2:51
Reach figures on this bike, which is the
2:53
S2, which is roughly a medium large
2:56
frame, is a 465 mm in its low suspension
3:01
setting is it's low a head angle setting
3:04
or 470 in its high setting. And that
3:07
also affects the head angle. So, we've
3:09
got a 63 and 1/2° head angle when it's
3:12
in its low setting or 64° head head
3:15
angle in its high setting. So, that's
3:17
pretty slack, pretty long. Obviously,
3:19
there are longer slacker bikes on the
3:20
market, but for a main mainstream brand,
3:23
this is, you know, pretty progressive,
3:25
really.
3:26
This is the S2 version. If you're if
3:29
you're taller than well, if you're my
3:31
height or taller, so I'm 178 cm, I would
3:34
personally go for the S3, which is a
3:36
slightly longer bike and that has a
3:38
reach of between 490 and 495.
3:42
Sounds a lot, but you do have this
3:44
really short stem on here and yeah, you
3:46
can roll the bars back a little bit.
3:48
When I rode this bike, I found it was a
3:50
a little bit short. I was riding off the
3:51
back of it, so the longer bike might be
3:53
a bit better.
3:54
Okay, specification-wise of this bike,
3:57
we've got quite a lot of Specialized kit
3:59
on here. We've got a Specialized
4:01
handlebar, we've got a Specialized stem
4:03
and in the steer tube we've got a SWAT
4:06
tool and I think this is very similar to
4:08
the tool that Will just tested. If you
4:10
head over to Singletrack Magazine, it's
4:12
a just an Allen key and it's got a
4:13
torque torque bolts on there for your
4:15
disc brakes and stuff.
4:17
And that just hides away in the steerer
4:20
and just locks away with that little cap
4:21
there. Really neat little feature.
4:24
We've got Roval Traverse carbon wheels.
4:27
As I've mentioned already, they're 27.5
4:29
inch. They've got a internal
4:31
rim width of 30 mm and those wheels are
4:34
shod with Butcher Grid tires front and
4:37
rear. Now, I've tested this bike only in
4:39
the dry and I found the tires, you know,
4:41
good. They were they're fast rolling,
4:43
they grip quite well, but I've have
4:45
heard that when things get a bit wetter,
4:46
they do tend to slide around a little
4:48
bit. So, it might be something to look
4:50
at if you were thinking about this bike,
4:51
you might want to put something like a
4:53
Hillbilly or something on the front for
4:55
a bit more grip. We've got Deity grips
4:58
on here. They're not Specialized brands,
4:59
I'm not sure why they've gone for Deity
5:01
grips, but they're very very comfortable
5:02
grips. And we've got a uh
5:05
cable operated dropper post here as
5:07
well. This is the Specialized Command
5:09
dropper post. It has 160 mm of drop on
5:13
there, so plenty to get that seat out of
5:15
the way and is not quite an infinity
5:18
adjust post. You've actually got 16
5:21
micro adjustments, so 16 points of
5:23
engagement on here. And when you're
5:25
using it, it feels like an infinite drop
5:27
drop dropper post, but you do hear those
5:29
little clicks now and again. Uh so, it
5:31
does lock into certain positions and it
5:33
has quite an aggressive action. Um so,
5:36
if I just pop
5:37
my notebook on here and go to this side.
5:43
It's quite an aggressive and fast
5:44
action, but don't worry though, when
5:46
you're riding it, it doesn't try and
5:48
chuck you in half. It feels all right.
5:49
You do have to control it with your
5:51
bottom,
5:52
but it's all right. It's actually not a
5:53
bad thing to have.
5:55
Other features on this bike are a full
5:57
SRAM GX 1 by 12-speed groupset. We've
6:00
got the GX shifter, GX rear mech and
6:03
cassette and we've also got a dub crank
6:05
and bottom bracket bracket on there. So,
6:08
you've got a fast, aggressive,
6:09
lightweight bike so Specialized have
6:11
very cleverly given this bike very very
6:13
powerful four-pot brakes. We've got Code
6:15
RSC brakes from SRAM on there. Really
6:18
great, got some nice adjustment on
6:19
there, really good bite point adjustment
6:21
and everything.
6:22
Uh so, all in all, it's a great package.
6:24
It's very lightweight. It looks very
6:26
nice. It's got this nice UD finish
6:29
carbon. There's no paint or lacquer on
6:31
here and if you look really closely, you
6:33
can just make out the different panels
6:36
and the pieces of carbon used to put the
6:38
bike frame together.
6:39
So, really well thought out bike, really
6:41
good looking bike and it's a very fun
6:43
bike, too. Quite progressive. If you're
6:45
looking for something from a main brand
6:47
that you can go to a store and buy,
6:49
something that's fast, aggressive,
6:51
almost like a downhill bike that you can
6:52
pedal uphill, well worth looking at one
6:54
of these. Head over to Singletrack
6:56
website now and you can read the first
6:58
ride review and yeah, if you've got any
7:00
questions, please ask us in the comments
7:02
section below and don't forget to
7:04
subscribe
7:05
or here and that's all. Thank you very
7:07
much. Goodbye.
7:09
Back carbon. It sounds like I'm being
7:11
cool.
7:12
Back carbon.
7:14
Yeah, it's a naked bear.
7:16
It's almost like a marble, isn't it?
7:18
Mhm mhm mhm mhm mhm mhm mhm mhm
7:20
squeegee squeegee stuff.
