hi I'm Heather from Single Track World
0:02
magazine and today I am here with the La
0:05
[Music]
0:11
Ellia say hello to the La Ellia or
0:14
should that be hello that's my terrible
0:18
Icelandic version of the word hello the
0:21
La Ellia is a unique mountain bike that
0:23
challenges industry norms to deliver
0:25
something a bit different
0:28
designed with a focus on efficiency
0:30
speed big volume tires and rider
0:33
confidence the Ellia hopes to redefine
0:35
your trail riding
0:39
experience some key features of the La
0:42
Ellia firstly it's optimized for wider
0:45
tires embracing the aspect of wider
0:47
tires the IA is engineered to
0:49
accommodate up to 2.8 in tires but
0:52
there's clearance for up to 3 in this
0:55
design choice claims to enhance rolling
0:57
efficiency traction and rider confidence
1:00
especially on rough
1:03
terrain next there's the LA single pivot
1:06
rear suspension system the Ellia
1:09
features an ostensibly simple single
1:11
pivot rear suspension system utilizing
1:13
leaf springs to protect the shock from
1:15
lateral loads this design ensures
1:18
durability reduces maintenance and
1:20
maintains a clean aesthetic without
1:22
compromising suspension performance
1:25
simple does not mean
1:28
basic next we've got that lightweight
1:31
carbon fiber frame weighing
1:33
approximately
1:34
1,960 g for this medium frame the
1:37
Ellia's carbon fiber construction offers
1:39
a robust yet lightweight structure
1:41
allowing riders to tackle everything
1:43
that's mountain
1:46
biking there's also advanced suspension
1:49
technology if you want it select models
1:51
come equipped with Rock Shocks flight
1:53
attendant system an intelligent
1:55
suspension setup that automatically
1:57
adjusts to the riding terrain optimizing
2:00
performance without you having to stop
2:01
and faf with
2:04
fingers it's also got a versatile
2:06
geometry and build options the Ellia is
2:09
available in both cross country and
2:11
trail configurations featuring 120 mil
2:14
and 130 mil fork travels respectively
2:18
riders can choose from various build
2:20
kits to match their riding style and
2:23
[Music]
2:38
preferences mountain biking and gravel
2:41
riding are both off-road cycling
2:42
disciplines but they differ in terrain
2:44
bike design and riding style here's a
2:48
breakdown firstly terrain mountain
2:52
biking is primarily on rugged trails
2:54
single track rocky paths and technical
2:56
descents it involves obstacles like
2:58
roots jumps and drops gravel on the
3:02
other hand focuses on smoother dirt
3:04
roads fire roads and unpaved paths it's
3:06
more about endurance and less about
3:09
technical skill compared to mountain
3:10
biking it also doesn't have quite the
3:13
focus on skinny single track and tight
3:15
technical
3:17
corners secondly there's the bike design
3:20
mountain bikes have suspension either
3:22
front only or full suspension they have
3:25
wide knobbyby tires and a more upright
3:27
riding position for control over rough
3:31
terrain gravel bikes on the other hand
3:34
look like road bikes but come with wider
3:36
tires usually 38 to 50 mm they have drop
3:40
handlebars and a rigid frame without
3:42
suspension they're designed for speed
3:45
and comfort on unpaved
3:48
roads thirdly there's the riding style
3:52
mountain biking emphasizes technical
3:54
handling jumps fast descents and tight
3:56
turns it often includes aggressive
3:59
riding and maneuvering over obstacles
4:03
gravel is more about covering long
4:04
distances efficiently with a mix of road
4:07
cycling endurance and mild off-road
4:12
capability next is speed and efficiency
4:16
mountain biking is slower due to rough
4:18
terrain and technical challenges gravel
4:21
however is faster and on dirt roads and
4:23
mixed terrain often covering greater
4:26
distances with less effort
4:30
lastly there's gear and accessories
4:33
mountain biking uses flat pedals
4:34
although sometimes clipless padded
4:37
gloves and full face or trail helmets
4:39
for
4:40
protection gravel uses clipless pedals
4:43
like road bikes lighter helmets and gear
4:45
focused on endurance riding such as
4:47
frame bags for bike
4:49
packing so which one should you choose
4:53
do you have a specific goal or type of
4:55
riding that you're interested in
5:00
if you prefer long adventurous rides on
5:02
dirt roads with a bit of pavement thrown
5:04
in you probably want a gravel bike
5:07
however if you enjoy technical
5:08
challenges jumps and rugged trails the
5:11
mountain bike is what you're after
5:30
so I'm joined in the studio now by my
5:33
colleague Mark who's also been riding
5:35
the Ellia because the medium that we've
5:38
got here was the perfect size for both
5:40
of us uh so what are your early thoughts
5:42
on the Ellia this the Ellia is a cross
5:45
country bike that's how LA have sold it
5:49
but I was surprised by just how much it
5:51
could handle beyond what you might
5:54
perceive as being the limits of XC uh
5:57
the geometry at the front is slack
5:58
enough at 65.6° to help the bike handle
6:01
some pretty gnarly terrain and the super
6:04
wide bars at 780 mm also helped when
6:07
things got technical i think the big
6:10
volume tires also helped with that
6:12
overall feeling I got that this bike
6:14
crossed the boundaries between trail and
6:16
XC riding in short it didn't hold me
6:20
back from hitting my local trails at
6:21
full tilt and how did you find it when
6:24
you were climbing well that's where the
6:26
flight attendant system kicked in
6:28
noticeably it essentially locks out the
6:31
suspension on the climbs which together
6:33
with the big tires really help with the
6:35
traction this was your first time with
6:39
the flight attendant and an automatic
6:41
lockout how did you find it so I really
6:44
liked it yeah it was the same thing of
6:46
noticing it on the climbs um I'm much
6:49
newer to mountain biking i've not been
6:51
doing it as long and a thing I really
6:53
struggle with is getting up those kind
6:54
of rocky grally skittery clims and I
6:58
yeah I just didn't have to think about
7:00
it anymore i could just ride you're
7:03
right it makes that little buzz noise
7:04
every time it makes an adjustment and it
7:06
does it an awful lot it's not a horrible
7:08
buzzing noise it doesn't get in the way
7:09
and the one thing about this bike is
7:11
it's super quiet i think with the big
7:13
volume tires helped with that uh the
7:15
simplicity of the single pivot system
7:17
which we'll talk about in a bit but how
7:19
many times have people out there got to
7:22
the bottom of a really good technical
7:24
descent and realize that you've just
7:26
done the whole thing with your fork or
7:28
your shock locked out you don't have to
7:30
worry about that it takes care of it
7:32
entirely which was which was brilliant
7:34
for me i loved it and how did you find
7:37
the LA single pivot design well single
7:39
pivot there's there's a lot of people
7:41
have a lot of opinions about single
7:42
pivot i I love single pivot designs
7:45
primarily because of the simplicity of
7:46
them there's there's so much less to go
7:49
wrong i think with the Elia the beauty
7:51
comes in the combination of the single
7:53
pivot the flight attendant system and
7:55
the big tires altogether they just felt
7:58
right they kind of more than the sum of
8:00
their parts sort of deal if if you get
8:02
what I mean how did you find the
8:04
electronic shifting and the uh wireless
8:06
dropper post again for me it was all
8:10
about how it takes the focus from having
8:12
to think about what I'm kind of doing
8:14
with the settings on the bike and allows
8:16
me to actually just ride it again um
8:19
because they were so responsive I just
8:20
knew that the second I needed that seat
8:22
out of the way or I needed to change
8:24
gear i love the fact that um there's no
8:27
adjustments needed to the rear mech
8:29
there's none of that sort of oh the
8:30
shift the indexing is just slightly out
8:32
and it's all a bit clicky so I just need
8:34
to turn the barrel adjuster on the K the
8:36
clever system basically adjusts itself
8:39
so you always get perfect shifting i
8:41
love the clean cockpit there are just
8:43
two cables on this bike and they're
8:44
brake hoses um the cleanness of the
8:47
cockpit together with the simplicity of
8:49
the single pivot design i just love the
8:51
look of this bike i I would I would sum
8:53
up and say that this is kind of XC plus
8:55
bike for me um you get an awful lot more
8:57
out of it than you think you're going to
8:58
get so uh looking forward to uh getting
9:02
some more miles on it
9:04
well that's all from us we've only
9:06
really scratched the surface of what the
9:08
Elliot is capable of so we need to get a
9:10
lot more miles on this bike over the
9:12
next few weeks uh for a more
9:14
comprehensive review to be available um
9:16
and that will be over on
9:19
singlerackworld.com along with a lot
9:21
more information about the full range
9:23
and prices of the Lavia
