Commencal's rowdy enduro bike gets a major update for 2021 and we have been lucky enough to get a first look and review of this 170mm, 29er bruiser. The 2021 Commencal Meta AM 29 Team Edition boasts an all-new frameset with a longer reach (495mm on this large bike), steeper 78.5 degree seat tube and slack 63.6 degree front end. The build includes the new 2021 RockShox Zeb, 520% SRAM GX Eagle and super sticky Schwable Addix Soft tyres. We'll have a full review in the coming weeks.

hey everyone andy from singletrack
0:04
magazine here and i'm out in this park
0:06
on this pretty nice day with this
0:09
amazing
0:09
bike and i am stoked this is a 2021
0:13
commensal meta am29 team edition
0:17
and it's one of the very few bikes
0:20
that is out in the wild even if you want
0:23
to buy one of these bikes now you can't
0:25
you can only pre-order them they don't
0:27
go on
0:28
they don't get shipped to customers
0:29
until august 14th
0:31
so for this one to be in this park with
0:33
me just about to hit the trails
0:36
is super exciting especially for me
0:38
because for the past
0:39
year or so i've been riding the previous
0:42
generation
0:43
of this bike and i really like it it's
0:45
been my go-to bike to go for rides
0:48
and it's also been my go-to bike to test
0:51
out components
0:52
i really like that old bike so this new
0:55
one
0:55
has got some really big shoes to fill
0:58
luckily
0:59
it has some really big numbers to fill
1:02
those shoes with
1:03
for example the reach this is a size
1:07
large bike and it has a reach of 495
1:10
millimeters
1:11
now that's long but especially for
1:13
commensal that's
1:14
really long because as a brand they
1:17
don't traditionally do
1:19
aggressive geometry bikes but as we've
1:21
seen with the new tr
1:22
and the new am that has changed now
1:26
what's
1:26
really good about this is commensal have
1:28
been smart with the angles
1:30
they haven't just slapped a massive
1:31
reach number on here and said okay done
1:34
they've been really clever with the
1:35
angles too so the seat tube on this bike
1:38
is 78.5 degrees
1:40
that's pretty steep and it puts you in a
1:42
really good seated
1:44
climbing position it also means that the
1:47
effective top tube length
1:48
is just 636 millimeters so don't look at
1:52
this reach and think
1:53
it's going to be too long it's actually
1:56
really nice and compact when you're sat
1:57
down
1:58
but then when you stand up you've got a
2:00
really long wheelbase
2:02
the wheels are really far out in front
2:04
of you and behind
2:05
and you're sat in the frame ready to
2:07
rail around corners and hit jumps
2:10
the front end on this bike has a 63.6
2:14
degree head tube angle
2:16
that is very slack but with the short
2:19
offset fork
2:20
the wheel isn't miles out in front of
2:22
you another really nice change on this
2:24
frame is the seat tube
2:26
height it's just 440 millimeters
2:29
and that's on a large some brands you'll
2:32
find 440 millimeters on a medium
2:34
and that means we can get away with a
2:36
much longer dropper post
2:38
and actually if i was going to complain
2:39
about anything on my previous commensal
2:42
it is the seat shoe is a little bit too
2:44
long so they fixed it with this
2:46
the frame changes don't stop there
2:48
though another
2:50
little niggle i had with the previous
2:52
generation bike was the inside
2:54
uh disc brake mount the internal disc
2:57
brake mount and what i mean by that is
2:58
it sat on the inside of the chainstay
3:00
and that made the back end
3:02
very wide and it could rub on your shoes
3:05
now come on sal has changed that
3:07
they put a regular post mount on this
3:09
bike that
3:10
narrows down the back end and it should
3:13
improve
3:13
heel clearance so lots of really good
3:16
changes on this throughout all those
3:19
changes they've also increased the space
3:22
in the frame
3:22
so you can easily put a bottle cage in
3:25
there and a full size bottle
3:26
the cable routing has completely been
3:29
redone it's all revamped and new and all
3:32
the bearings are at double
3:33
sealed enduro bearings so it should
3:37
last really long and it shouldn't need
3:39
servicing very often either
3:42
changes continue though we've got a
3:45
lower stack on this bike i can't
3:47
remember the reach or the stack height
3:48
on it
3:49
off the top of my head but compared to
3:51
my other commensal
3:52
the front end is much lower too
3:55
so yeah a lot of changes it kind of
3:58
looks similar to the previous generation
4:00
bike
4:00
but there's so much has changed
4:03
suspension travel hasn't changed though
4:06
the front has 170 millimeters and the
4:09
rear has 160 millimeters
4:11
but the shock stroke has changed
4:14
this shock on this bike is a
4:21
62.5 millimeter stroke
4:24
yeah the previous bike was 60
4:25
millimeters this is 62.5
4:28
the overall eye to eye is still 230
4:31
but the actual stroke has changed so my
4:34
new
4:35
tiny details have changed on that and
4:37
commensal have done that
4:39
so they can improve small bump
4:41
sensitivity
4:42
and they also still have that nice
4:44
progression and ramp up at the end
4:46
the whole idea about this bike is yeah
4:49
it might not be the lightest
4:50
but the kinematics the suspension should
4:53
ensure
4:54
that this rides light it feels light and
4:57
it's lively and playful
4:59
and to be honest lively and playful
5:00
aren't the kind of things we
5:02
tend to associate with a big 170 mil
5:06
travel 29er
5:07
but they did it with the previous bike
5:09
and i'm sure they've done it with this
5:11
one too
5:13
yeah it's 29 inch wheels front and rear
5:15
and on this the team edition bike
5:17
we've got dt swiss ex 511
5:21
wheels front and rear we've got really
5:24
nice
5:24
schwalbe addicts compound tires front
5:27
and rear we've got a magic mary on the
5:29
front
5:29
and a big betty on the rear i don't even
5:33
think the big betty has been released
5:34
yet
5:35
but it's got one on here we've got the
5:38
brand new
5:39
shram gx eagle drivetrain on here this
5:42
is a little bit different to the eagle
5:44
drivetrain that i've been trying on the
5:46
my other commensal because this has the
5:48
alloy
5:49
chain set on here whereas i've been
5:51
using the carbon one but everything else
5:52
is the same
5:53
it still has that massive 52 percent 52
5:56
tooth
5:57
cassette and 500 percent
6:00
520 range so
6:04
yeah it might be big yeah it might be a
6:06
little bit heavy but it doesn't matter
6:07
i've got
6:08
massive gear to climb up everything and
6:10
i've got a really
6:11
nice seat tube angle and affected top
6:14
tube
6:14
for really nicely positioned climbing
6:17
too
6:19
other different bits and bobs on this
6:21
bike are the forks
6:22
the previous generation bikes all came
6:24
with lyrics
6:25
or 36s and this has got the monster
6:29
zeb on here the rockshox zeb it's a 170
6:32
mil travel fork i've not ridden
6:34
on the zeb yet i wasn't luckily enough
6:36
lucky enough to have that fork
6:37
but ross did review and he says i will
6:40
like it so
6:40
i'm very interested to see how good this
6:43
fork will be
6:44
the rear shock is a rockshox deluxe
6:47
ultimate so it has a compression lever
6:51
and rebound and it's an air shock so
6:53
super duper easy to set
6:55
up obviously the zeb fork has
6:57
compression and rebound and it's an air
6:59
fork great performing rock shock
7:00
suspension front and rear the dropper
7:02
post on here is a
7:03
kind shock lev and this i've not really
7:06
used kind shark
7:07
dropper posts very much but everything
7:09
i've read about them seems to be good
7:11
and this one actually feels super smooth
7:14
so i'm really interested to see how well
7:16
that lasts
7:17
finishing kit we've got a fabric saddle
7:20
and that is probably one of the most
7:21
comfortable saddles on the market
7:24
and we've got a bunch of commensals own
7:27
brand
7:27
components the ride alpha components the
7:30
ride alpha bar
7:31
i've been using that bar on my previous
7:34
bike even though i have changed stems
7:35
i've kept that common style bias a
7:37
really nice comfortable
7:39
sweet back and rise yeah really great
7:42
bar
7:42
the stem is a new 40 mil stem slightly
7:45
shorter than
7:46
the previous bike and we've got common
7:48
cells alt uh ride alpha
7:50
single lock on grips and that means
7:52
there's one lock on so you can use
7:54
all the length of the grip and have to
7:56
worry about an uncomfortable lock at the
7:58
end
7:58
and oh the brakes are sram code
8:01
rsc brakes and what's really nice
8:04
the views got these titanium bolts for
8:07
the calipers which just looks really
8:09
trick
8:10
so that's it that's the new commental
8:12
meta
8:13
am 2 9 team edition 2021 bike
8:17
looked rad cannot wait to ride it so
8:19
what i'm going to do now is
8:21
get home get changed get it dirty on the
8:23
trail
8:24
and i'll give a full review in a few
8:26
weeks time see you all soon
