The Trail 429 is an all-new short travel trail bike from Pivot Cycles, with 120mm rear travel, a 130-140mm travel fork, and the option to run 29in or 27.5+ wheels.
Wil went out to Moab in Utah to test out the new bike on the rocky singletrack of Mag 7 and Portal, and you check out the full tech feature here: https://singletrackworld.com/2018/05/first-ride-review-the-pivot-cycles-trail-429/

hello everyone my name is will and I'm
0:01
the technical editor for a single track
0:03
magazine and single track WorldCom and
0:06
I'm currently a Moab in Utah on a pivot
0:08
cycles launch now the bike that we're
0:11
here to ride is called the trail four to
0:13
nine you've probably heard that name
0:15
before and it's because it's an existing
0:17
model in the pivot cycles lineup called
0:19
the Mach 4 to 9 trail pivot have decided
0:21
to simplify the name to trail four to
0:23
nine in order to better differentiate
0:26
this bike from the Mach 4 to 9 SL which
0:29
is a race bike this on the other hand is
0:31
a straight up 29 inch short travel trail
0:34
bike now it does have some similarities
0:36
to the existing Mach 4 to 9 trail but
0:39
there are a whole load of differences as
0:42
well it still uses 29 inch wheels but we
0:45
have had a slight boost in travel on the
0:47
back from 116 to 120 millimeters up
0:50
front we have a 130 millimeter travel
0:53
fork though there is the capability of
0:55
running 140 if you so choose in addition
0:58
to that there is 27.5 + compatibility so
1:01
you can run this bike with 29 inch
1:03
wheels with tires up to two point six
1:06
inch wide and you can run it with 27.5
1:09
inch plus wheels with tires up to three
1:11
inches wide so there's a huge amount of
1:13
clearance in the backend either four
1:15
plus rubber or four British riders for
1:18
mud so plenty of room in the back end
1:20
now geometry on this bike some of the
1:23
numbers are fairly similar to the
1:24
existing Mach 4 to 9 trail and others
1:26
have changed quite a bit so up front
1:28
we've gone a little bit slacker 67 point
1:31
three degree head angle on the seat
1:33
angle that's actually got steeper to 74
1:35
degrees
1:36
the reach has grown quite a lot so the
1:39
medium that I'm riding here has a 440
1:42
millimeter reach so quite healthy gives
1:44
the bike a nice long front center with
1:46
that slack head angle for for a trail
1:48
bike of this amount of travel there will
1:50
be five frame sizes available in the new
1:53
trail four to nine from extra small
1:55
through to extra large and perhaps
1:57
impressively all of them will take a
1:59
water bottle inside the front triangle
2:01
which is a pretty neat feature one
2:03
exciting thing about this bike is it is
2:05
one by specific now there are a lot of
2:07
trail bikes on the market that are one
2:09
by specific but for pivot cycles with
2:11
the exception of the phoenix downhill
2:12
bike all of their by
2:13
we'll take a front dérailleur but the
2:15
trail four to nine does not by going one
2:18
by specific they've been able to beefing
2:20
up the DW link suspension design that
2:22
lower link down the bottom is much wider
2:24
and as a result much stiffer the DW link
2:28
system on the back is very similar to
2:30
the current Mach 5.5 in terms of its
2:32
layout it's designed to provide a really
2:34
nice firm efficient pedaling platform
2:37
without any need to flip levers on the
2:39
shock it's a very very efficient design
2:41
but it's still designed to be active on
2:43
the small/medium at big hits as well now
2:45
one of the other changes with the trail
2:47
four to nine is slightly controversial
2:50
the change to super boost + pacing which
2:53
is also featured on pivots existing
2:56
switchblade model now pivot have gone
2:58
for the super boost + spacing in order
3:00
to facilitate that huge amount of tire
3:02
clearance on the back whilst also
3:04
keeping the chain stays quite short
3:06
we've got four hundred and twenty nine
3:07
millimeter chain stay lengths on the
3:09
back and to do that they've gone with
3:12
that 157 millimeter wide hub so nice and
3:14
wide relative to a standard boost with
3:17
hub which is one hundred and forty eight
3:18
millimeters wide in terms of the
3:20
complete bikes on the twenty nine inch
3:21
models we've got rims with thirty
3:23
millimeter wide internal rim width we're
3:25
running tires from axis these are 2.4
3:28
inch wide trail tires so they're
3:30
designed specifically for those wider
3:32
rims for the cockpit we've got 45
3:34
millimeter long stem and a 760
3:37
millimeter wide handlebar and that's
3:38
consistent across every size range
3:40
except for the extra small which goes a
3:42
bit shorter on the stem and a little
3:44
narrower on the hand over the grips our
3:46
WTB padlock so they've got that nice
3:48
soft end to them and that actually adds
3:51
a little bit of extra weight by the time
3:52
you account for the grips it's slightly
3:54
wider than 770 millimeters so nice and
3:57
wide for a bike of this amount of travel
3:59
so how does it ride well the trails have
4:01
been riding today here in Moab you may
4:03
be familiar with we've been riding mag 7
4:06
and portal which are very technical very
4:08
rocky trails that have been putting this
4:11
bike to its absolute limits one thing I
4:14
can say is this bike climbs incredibly
4:16
well that DW link suspension design is
4:18
very very efficient which is not exactly
4:20
a surprise given it's a pivot their
4:23
suspension design always feels very very
4:25
firm under power
4:27
there's very little energy loss when
4:29
you're pedaling along and that's true
4:31
for this trail four to nine perhaps the
4:33
the most surprising thing is on the
4:35
technical climb so the suspension is
4:37
still active and that means on big
4:39
slabby rocky chunky kind of climbs that
4:42
we've been going up this bike is able to
4:45
to skip and hop its way up really really
4:47
well it's quite low in the cockpit
4:49
there's the head tube is nice and short
4:51
with the hidden lower head set there as
4:54
well and that means it's quite easy to
4:56
get over the front end of the bike to
4:57
lift it up over rocks and and keep it
5:00
moving on the climbs on the descents
5:02
we've definitely been using all 120
5:04
millimeters of travel the the trails
5:08
have been riding today have pushed this
5:09
bike to the limits but I've been very
5:11
very surprised what I've been able to
5:13
get away with it's never bottomed out
5:15
harshly it's certainly used all of the
5:18
travel on multiple occasions but it
5:20
handles those big rapid hits
5:22
surprisingly well and I guess that's a
5:24
sign of a really well sort of chassis
5:26
nice stable geometry but also a
5:29
fantastic suspension design that that
5:31
handles those those big impacts with
5:34
with very little fanfare so been very
5:37
impressed so far with the the trail 429
5:40
and how versatile has been for riding
5:42
extremely technical terrain now if you'd
5:45
like to read more about my first
5:46
impressions of this new short travel
