Hello everyone, this is Will from
0:01
Singletrack Magazine and we're here at
0:03
the Fort William World Cup and I'm
0:05
joined by Joe who's one of the mechanics
0:08
for Trek Factory Racing team.
0:09
Yeah, that's right. Yeah, so
0:11
here I am again. Um
0:13
second round of the World Cup this year.
0:15
Yeah, 2018. Hopefully it's a good one,
0:16
so.
0:17
How many Fort Bills is this for you?
0:19
This would be my fifth World Cup round
0:23
here, fifth national here and
0:26
well, I've raced a cup here a couple
0:27
times back in the past as well, so yeah.
0:28
Yeah.
0:29
So, you're pretty familiar with the
0:30
track and the the demands of the track?
0:32
Yeah, well, um that's the thing apart
0:33
from the one little section through the
0:34
woods, the rest of it doesn't change.
0:36
Like riders can turn up here having not
0:37
raced it or been here all year and be
0:40
like 78% up to race speed already, so.
0:42
Right. Right.
0:44
What does this
0:45
What does this course do to bikes? Like
0:47
what do they What do they need to be
0:48
prepared for? What kind of, you know,
0:50
what does it destroy?
0:50
Well, what doesn't it do? That's the
0:52
thing. Um
0:53
Yeah, like it's renowned for being
0:55
brutal. So many rocks up there and and
0:58
well, last year the wooded section,
1:00
roots as well, so
1:02
it's hard to kind of get everything set
1:03
up. Like it's so dry and marbly at top
1:06
as it is at the moment. Like with no
1:08
rain, it's so slippy and everything,
1:09
yeah. So, uh
1:11
Yeah.
1:12
And we've obviously got this beautiful
1:13
bike here for Rachel Atherton. Uh can
1:15
you tell us some of the highlights on
1:17
this bike? Are there anything that's
1:18
particularly special or any custom kind
1:20
of tweaks we've got on here?
1:22
Well, um yeah, it's obviously the paint
1:23
job, that's the main thing and changed a
1:25
few things on the on the Hope V4 brakes.
1:28
Um just getting them nice uh
1:30
color coded, really.
1:32
It looks absolutely
1:33
that make everything uh
1:35
Yeah, that brings it all together, yeah.
1:36
Yeah.
1:37
Okay. And can you tell us a little bit
1:39
about setup on here? For example, like
1:41
what kind of tire pressure and what kind
1:42
of tires are we running for this track?
1:44
Yeah, so um
1:46
with the track here
1:48
being so dry and even in the
1:50
well, even if it's soaking wet here, you
1:51
can always run a dry tire cuz the
1:52
ground's that hard, so you don't really
1:53
need those spikes to find the grip
1:54
there. Uh we're running the Bontrager G5
1:57
in a 2.5.
1:58
Uh, pressure-wise, we'll go as low as 24
2:02
in the front and probably 25 in the
2:04
back. And then,
2:06
depending on how much grip there is and
2:07
how fast rolling it is, then uh, go up
2:09
to sort of 26, 27. So, uh,
2:12
So, yeah. Um, and suspension set up, um,
2:16
you probably know we were here a couple
2:17
of weeks ago for the national.
2:18
Yep.
2:18
So, that was a good time to get, well,
2:20
the riders spend time on the bikes, get
2:22
used to the track, and adjust everything
2:24
we need to for this race. So, that's
2:26
always a good
2:27
a good test to get, well, the priority
2:30
for that national race is almost to get
2:31
everything ready for the World Cup. So,
2:33
we can come here fighting really. So,
2:34
uh, so no guessing games or anything,
2:36
just uh, get up there straight away and
2:38
get riding, yeah.
2:38
Got you. Got you. And uh, all right. So,
2:41
let's say uh, after practice, for
2:43
example, uh, Rachel comes back with the
2:45
bike. Uh, what are you checking for?
2:47
What's your standard procedure for going
2:49
over the bike to uh, to work out what
2:50
needs attention or what doesn't need
2:52
attention?
2:52
Yeah, so normally,
2:54
um,
2:55
well, suspension being a big part of it,
2:56
we'll normally check fork pressure
2:57
because it can change, you know, well,
2:59
two or three PSI here or there due to
3:01
temperature, like uh, well, obviously
3:04
going higher up the hill, atmospheric
3:05
pressure, so on, it can change that. And
3:07
uh,
3:08
more often than not, Rachel's come down
3:09
and be like, "Actually, yeah, it wasn't
3:10
feeling quite right. It felt a bit too
3:11
hard there." We'd check it and yeah. So,
3:13
um,
3:14
it is that. Um,
3:15
So, checking air pressure in the forks.
3:17
What about things like brakes um, and
3:19
drivetrain stuff as well?
3:21
Yeah, so um,
3:22
well, with the Hope stuff that we've
3:23
moved onto this year is been really
3:25
solid. Uh, we've not had many issues
3:27
with them at all. Um,
3:28
this being such a long track, you'd
3:30
maybe expect stuff to overheat, but the
3:31
Hope's got there, well, the Hope brakes
3:33
is just consistent all the way down. Um,
3:35
one thing we will be checking is spokes.
3:38
So, again, we'll we'll check if tires
3:40
have lost any air pressure, see if
3:41
there's any flat spots, see if there's
3:42
any loose spokes. Um,
3:43
we always have at least one or two wheel
3:46
sets ready to replace straight away with
3:48
the same tires on, ready to go.
3:50
Just in case anything happens to the
3:51
rims. But um,
3:53
Yeah, I'd say that's that's the main
3:54
thing really, yeah.
3:55
Got you.
3:55
And checking chain rings, bash guards,
3:57
everything just in case they get smashed
3:58
to pieces.
3:59
Fanta- Well, I hope not too many smashed
4:01
pieces, especially this lovely new
4:03
frame.
4:03
Yeah, yeah, that'd be disastrous,
4:04
wouldn't it?
4:06
All right, Joe, well, I hope you don't
4:07
have too much work this weekend.
4:09
Hopefully, fingers crossed, yeah.
4:10
No worries. Thank you very much for your
4:11
time.
4:12
Thank you.
4:12
Cheers.
4:13
Cheers.
