0:13
hey everyone it's will here from single
0:16
track magazine and single track WorldCom
0:18
and this bike right next to me here is
0:20
brand new from specialized this is the
0:22
2020 specialized s works epic hardtail
0:26
now this bike is all brand new for 2020
0:29
there have been a host of changes to
0:31
make it more comfortable more capable
0:33
but also very very lightweight we're
0:35
going to get onto some of those details
0:36
in a moment I'm gonna tell you about
0:38
some of the unique features to the epic
0:40
hardtail frame and finally I'm gonna
0:42
tell you how it rides on the trail we're
0:44
out here at the North Star Resort near
0:46
Lake Tahoe in America and I've been
0:48
writing a bunch of new specialized bikes
0:50
including the brand new epic hard tail
0:52
so what makes this bike unique
0:55
well for a start specialized claims
0:58
you're looking at the lightest
1:00
mass-produced carbon mountain bike frame
1:02
on the market how light just 790 grams
1:06
that is unbelievable and what's even
1:09
more impressive is that number is
1:10
actually specialized being relatively
1:12
conservative we've got a frame here at
1:14
the launch that we weighed a medium
1:15
frame which actually came in around
1:17
seven hundred and sixty grams so
1:19
incredibly lightweight the previous
1:22
s-works epic Kanter wasn't exactly a
1:24
Heffalump I mean that frame had a
1:25
claimed weight of around 860 grams so
1:28
not a huge weight drop going to the new
1:30
frame but it's about 10% and if in the
1:33
world of weight weeny ism that's a
1:35
significant weight drop what perhaps
1:37
more impressive is the fact that this
1:39
whole bike has gotten quite a bit longer
1:40
and the whole bike has grown so despite
1:42
it getting bigger it's actually gotten
1:44
lighter so how is specialized gotten the
1:46
weight down on this frame well they've
1:48
scrutinized the carbon fiber layup to
1:50
ensure there's minimal overlap between
1:51
all of the carbon pliers throughout the
1:53
frame you'll notice that some of the
1:55
tube diameters have actually gotten
1:56
smaller particularly the seat stays
1:58
these guys have been thinned out quite a
2:00
lot now aside from reducing weight
2:01
that's also increased rear-end
2:03
compliance basically to make the bike
2:05
more comfortable to ride there's more
2:07
tire clearance in the back here so
2:08
special I says you can fit up to a 2.4
2:10
inch tire in the back of this frame
2:12
the other key junctions have been
2:13
slimmed down as well so the tapered head
2:15
tube and also the bottom bracket
2:17
junction has gotten quite a bit smaller
2:19
in size on the note of the bottom
2:20
bracket specialised has moved away from
2:22
the pier 30 standards so we've now got a
2:24
good old-fashioned threaded bottom
2:26
bracket I can hear mechanics all around
2:28
the world rejoicing at the move from
2:30
specialised this is something we've seen
2:32
across a whole bunch of other
2:33
specialised models there's been a
2:35
general move away from the presser foot
2:36
bottom bracket systems to a standard
2:39
thread in system so the epic hardtail
2:42
frame even though this is designed to be
2:43
super lightweight purebred cross-country
2:46
race bike we do have a threaded bottom
2:48
bracket on this frame we're told it's
2:49
actually lighter though so the carbon
2:51
fiber frame is co molded with two alloy
2:53
rings which sit on either side of the
2:55
bottom bracket shell after the frame has
2:57
been baked in the oven these alloy
2:59
inserts are then tapped and the idea is
3:01
that's designed to provide really
3:03
precise alignments at the bottom bracket
3:05
and the axle lines up nice and neatly
3:06
inside there very very neat the other
3:09
on this bike has been a move from the
3:11
27.2 millimeter seatpost diameter to
3:13
thirty point nine millimeters now
3:15
normally that would mean increase weight
3:17
and also increase stiffness as well
3:19
what specialized has done here is
3:21
they've made the walls very very thin
3:22
Eve so even though the diameter is
3:24
increased the walls have gotten thinner
3:26
we've also got this lovely little curve
3:28
down here just above the bottom bracket
3:30
now this arced seat tube is designed to
3:32
provide more compliance so even though
3:34
the seat post has gotten bigger in
3:36
diameter specialized says the compliance
3:38
level is actually the same as the
3:39
previous frame so still a nice smooth
3:42
riding bike but with that thirty point
3:43
nine millimeter seat post diameter you
3:45
have a load more options for fitting a
3:47
dropper post on this frame and fitting a
3:48
dropper is something that cross-country
3:50
races are increasingly looking to do
3:52
this frame will take a dropper post and
3:54
you can run the cable internally through
3:55
the frame and will pop out up at the
3:57
head tube the other big change on this
3:58
bike has been the geometry now to make
4:00
it more capable for highly technical
4:03
World Cup cross-country courses
4:04
specialized two slackened out the head
4:06
tube angle by over a full degree we're
4:08
now at sixty eight point five degrees on
4:10
the head tube angle not only that but
4:12
they're also running a reduced offset
4:14
fork and this is something we've seen on
4:15
the full suspension epic FS our model
4:18
we've gone a 42 millimeter offset on
4:21
CID fork here the idea with that shorter
4:23
offset and that slack a head tube angle
4:25
is to create more trail on the front of
4:27
the bike that's to give you a more
4:29
stable steering and reduce that sort of
4:31
twitchiness and kind of nervous handling
4:33
you can get from very lightweight racy
4:35
cross-country hardtails
4:36
the whole bike has also gotten longer so
4:38
every size has grown in reached by about
4:40
twelve to fourteen millimeters so we've
4:42
got longer top tubes and the front
4:44
centre is increased in length and again
4:46
this is all about improving stability on
4:48
really steep rough technical
4:50
cross-country race courses with the top
4:52
tube getting longer specialized as short
4:54
in the stem lengths so we're now down to
4:56
about sixty to seventy five millimeter
4:57
stem lengths depending on the frame size
4:59
and that short stem kind of brings the
5:01
bars back in towards the rider so you
5:03
don't end up with a huge reach to get
5:05
down to the grips that shorter stem also
5:07
quickens up steering a little bit so
5:09
even though I've got that slacker head
5:10
tube angle and the reduced offset fork
5:12
the short stem helps to give the front
5:14
steering a nice light kind of easy and
5:16
agile feel make no mistake though this
5:18
is still a full-blown cross-country race
5:20
bike so the riding position is still
5:23
fairly low at the front nice short had
5:25
to bond here so you get the bars down
5:27
really low for a really powerful and
5:29
efficient climbing position the see tube
5:31
angle remains the same at 74 degrees
5:33
likewise the bottom bracket drop that's
5:35
about the same at 63 millimeters below
5:37
the hub axial line and the chainstay
5:40
length on the back of this bike stays
5:41
the same at 430 millimeters so some of
5:44
the numbers have carried over from the
5:45
previous model and that's being combined
5:47
with that longer reach that slacker head
5:49
tube angle and the reduced offset fork
5:51
as well so I guess you're wondering how
5:53
actually rides on the trail we've had a
5:55
really good chance to get a feel for
5:57
this bike on a nice long cross-country
5:58
ride here at the Northstar resort near
6:00
Lake Tahoe for a start I mean it's super
6:03
light this bike is it's under 9 kilos
6:06
for the s-works EPPICard tail very very
6:08
lightweight carbon fiber Rove our wheels
6:10
we've got fast-track tires front and
6:12
rear these are 2.3 inches wide front and
6:14
rear so nice high volume tire that you
6:16
can run at relatively low pressure to
6:18
get a little bit more comfort speaking
6:20
of comfort that's probably the biggest
6:21
difference I've noticed on the new bike
6:23
compared to the previous s-works
6:25
EPPICard tale a bike I spent a decent
6:27
amount of time on those thin seat stays
6:29
and that curved seat tube combined with
6:30
the high volume tires does really really
6:33
well to kind of soften out harsh edges
6:35
on rocks and roots on the trail so
6:37
surprisingly comfortable to ride given
6:40
this is of lightweight racy hard tail
6:42
that's definitely one of the biggest
6:43
differences i've noticed over the
6:44
previous generation epic and the other
6:46
difference is the front end handling so
6:48
all of those changes then increase
6:50
ground trail that's come from that slack
6:51
a head tube angle it does give it a lot
6:54
more of a planted feel under the since
6:55
it's still a you know it's still a very
6:58
lightweight crisp handling hard tail and
7:01
there's no problems at all slicing and
7:03
dicing this bike through tight twisty
7:04
single track but definitely the front
7:06
end does feel a little stickier it feels
7:09
a little bit more planted on the
7:10
descents particularly through high speed
7:11
berms you just get less wiggle through
7:13
the front wheel and this was something
7:15
I've experienced before
7:16
on the full suspension epic which also
7:18
has that reduced offset fork and it
7:21
provides a noticeable difference on this
7:22
lightweight hard tail so definitely a
7:24
big improvement in stability but still
7:26
with that crisp handling that fast
7:28
acceleration and that's super low weight
7:30
that makes this bike absolutely deadly
7:32
on the climbs but now also very deadly
7:35
on the descends as well so
7:37
I've been very impressed with this new
7:39
s-works epic cartel there'll be a range
7:41
of different models in the epic lineup
7:43
for 2020 now the top s-works models
7:46
there'll be a couple of those they'll be
7:47
running that fact 12m carbon-fiber frame
7:50
that's the sub 800 gram carbon fiber
7:52
frame there will be a fact 11 M carbon
7:55
fiber frame and that will be SPECT on
7:56
the pro expert comp and carbon 29 models
7:59
now that adds about 140 grams bear in
8:02
mind that still brings the frame rate
8:03
under a kilos is still very lightweight
8:05
and of course the overall shape and
8:07
geometry stays the same throughout the
8:09
line whether you get the top-end s-works
8:10
model or the entry-level carbon 29 model
