[Music]
1:15
Lena I mean even jet what's the fence
1:17
twice now and shed even the dog stand
1:20
get worried so in 2019 there were 8
1:25
rounds of the UCI World Cup for the
1:27
world championships that's 9 races and
1:30
out of those nine races in the elite
1:31
men's category
1:32
there were only four winners two of them
1:35
were French like Bruni and a Maori para
1:37
two of them were British and last week
1:39
we have one of those Brits Danny ha ah
1:41
Monsieur
1:41
this week we're absolutely delighted to
1:44
welcome the other one welcome to the
1:45
show Laurie Greenland hey thank you very
1:48
much we're all good mate where in the
1:51
world are you at the moment and how are
1:53
you getting on with the social distance
1:54
then yeah just my girlfriend but yeah
2:03
well yeah we were so last minute I saw
2:06
Jack in Portugal I think you know last
2:08
minute coming into the season so buying
2:11
some chair everything that it was
2:13
actually quite nice to know the first
2:15
would have been delayed after that I
2:18
seen got pretty bored so yeah I'm still
2:21
making the most of my home trails and
2:23
stuff this it's getting pretty boring
2:25
learning you be managing to get some
2:27
training done
2:29
yeah I was lucky enough at Red Bull
2:31
something out there the home gym so yeah
2:34
I don't very big spaces next to me here
2:39
but but yeah I was lucky enough that
2:41
robe or something out of a care package
2:44
so yeah we're we're keeping it in shape
2:46
but I don't think it's possible for us
2:50
to stay on that peak just where we were
2:52
a few weeks back into until we race
2:56
again so we're in a little bit of a
2:58
trough hoping to come out sometime in
3:01
summer that but yes I'm just taking it
3:04
along I'm not going crazy yeah look we
3:10
don't usually go that far back on this
3:12
podcast as we try and focus on the
3:14
racing there's no racing at the moment
3:16
and I can't recall you doing a podcast
3:18
previously it have you done one before
3:27
just trying roadie do do mostly speaking
3:32
in terms of everything yeah yeah we've
3:39
no Gailey racing to focus on so let's go
3:42
back a little bit forever and I know you
3:44
and Jack get on pretty well and there's
3:46
a few thing you want if things he wants
3:47
to ask you about so I'll let you start
3:49
Jack over to you George so yeah Laurie
3:52
great to have you on the podcast like
3:53
George said I want to start by saying
3:57
that around the pitch you're known has
3:59
been a very humble very modest guy but
4:01
you're also a very very confident person
4:03
to be around
4:05
I've been told by people I think it was
4:07
Polly Morris but you didn't know the
4:10
traditional schooling system when you
4:12
were younger caucus through the school
4:14
days and what was different about it
4:16
what did you experience that you think
4:17
might have been different what most kids
4:19
had yes oh yes so I went to a stylist
4:23
school don't know if you've heard of
4:24
that but it's a sort of it's quite a
4:27
more relaxed approach for an education
4:29
they study you kind of know reading and
4:31
writing pretty late and it definitely is
4:36
a more relaxed kind of environment I
4:39
know a lot of people call their
4:42
it'd be your words being a being an
4:51
athlete in a blatant some extreme sports
4:54
person from a young age it was pretty
4:59
cool to go there so again what was that
5:08
so what age did the Steiner school start
5:10
so was it from high school or was it
5:12
even before that yeah that was from when
5:14
I was about 10 years old so I went
5:17
through just normal traditional stay
5:19
school yes and then one therefore so the
5:23
next six or seven years was about 16 or
5:26
17 when I know it was cool I I think for
5:30
us one of those things it's definitely
5:33
not for everyone
5:33
yeah but especially people like me who
5:37
kind of I reckon you'd agree that uh
5:40
sort of the extreme sports athletes are
5:42
pretty different mentally to a lot of
5:45
people so to someone like me I was just
5:47
such an energetic decision was it to
5:55
send you there Laurie nice and do you
6:04
think it's played quite a big role in
6:05
the person you've become today yeah II
6:08
thought so is so it's quite hard to say
6:13
really because there were there were a
6:15
lot of people so one of those places
6:18
where everyone seems no room so I'm
6:20
pretty sure they love myself wouldn't
6:25
have been too far off but definitely
6:28
just that that support and sort of
6:32
bigger picture understanding sometimes
6:34
for each individual was was pretty cool
6:39
to grow where they definitely shaped
6:40
evolve where a lot of our approach
6:43
situations were so how influential has
6:46
it been in terms of the racing
6:48
we're they're very supportive towards
6:49
your sporting aspirations
6:53
yeah it's sort of thing that I dare I'd
6:56
ask for a weekend not going racing all
6:58
or thoughts like a Thursday Friday and
7:00
it would always be a we'd have to put up
7:03
no fight to get the time off there they
7:05
really understood it so yeah a lot of
7:08
them I know like in there in the school
7:10
meeting room where their teachers hang
7:12
out set they keep like on the notice
7:15
boards how I'm doing even these dating
7:17
things so I think they all like sort of
7:20
thing with it's quite small numbers the
7:22
teachers will come quite so personally
7:26
invested in your future in your solar
7:28
sails pretty cool but yeah Bristol was
7:32
not a big place everyone knows everyone
7:34
so it's nice yes hug up today
7:37
yeah nice fair enough so and obviously
7:40
you said it was a good place to go being
7:42
into the extreme sports and just sports
7:44
and general things like that how old
7:45
were you when cast your mind back how
7:47
old were you when you realize that the
7:50
down hill was for you and you wanted to
7:51
have a career in downhill so be honest
7:55
for you oh yeah so I grew up over the
7:59
road from the skate park so that's all
8:01
bikes from a very young age was
8:05
definitely why I decided I wanted to do
8:08
it sort of thing where my dad going to
8:11
mountain biking and I followed I never
8:13
actually thought I can't remember the
8:16
first time I thought this is what I want
8:17
to do is just having a lot of fun riding
8:20
my dad really says just being such a
8:23
competitive person I think naturally you
8:26
just want more and more more and that
8:27
just plays into racing so it's one as
8:29
I've always had quite serious approach
8:31
to it
8:32
a lot of the approach has been fun edgy
8:36
tail fun it spins there yeah just a
8:39
natural kind of you just followed what
8:40
you were doing it yeah a natural came
8:42
into this already
8:43
absolutely how big a player was your dad
8:45
in your eyes through downhill I know
8:48
he's been yeah yeah massive massive
8:52
really is the sort of thing where you
8:55
know my daddy's he's not he's not that
8:57
old he's quite young dad so a lot of it
9:00
was he wanted to ride his bike you know
9:02
you need to take me on as a sort of
9:05
thing so
9:06
although early days racing I race
9:09
because sir that's what he wanted to do
9:12
so it's yeah pretty much
9:15
when did your when when did you start
9:18
racing cuz I know you dad used to do all
9:20
the Dragon series and stuff yeah but
9:23
your roots and ran kind of starts in
9:25
2012 or something like that I think were
9:28
you racing under edge before that were
9:30
you and somehow I ended up doing three
9:33
years in the juvenile we didn't know
9:37
what we do mister never asked about your
9:41
bracelet thing but yeah I think I raced
9:44
the year earlier alright okay so wide
9:48
open team helped you through your youth
9:49
years will you juvenile with wide open
9:51
as well it was like just youth just a
9:54
youth and then obviously you moved over
9:56
to trap world racing how much of a jump
10:01
was it jumping from the wide open to the
10:03
track cell was it a big change
10:05
oh it was ridiculous a is that I can
10:10
still remember the first time I sort of
10:12
looked at the big track world racing
10:16
truck in there so my name on the side of
10:19
it is a huge jump and like just from
10:27
I've never really done much interviews
10:29
and stuff like that in the past in the
10:31
first tournament the first team
10:33
interview we did was I they draw a
10:36
cinema hall empty now and we were
10:40
immense the black screens at the back in
10:42
front of this big cinema with all the
10:44
track guys from the US there I should
10:46
say oh so no meticulous hold it um well
10:50
yeah yeah luckily I was on my first year
10:55
truck was there with their Greg
10:58
Williamson Brooke McDonald in here
11:00
George run against it and any communally
11:02
says it was a pretty cool punches in
11:06
terms of the whole setup it was big but
11:09
a pre Cena realized that they were just
11:11
doing the exact same thing I wasn't
11:13
pretty chill guys look the first time I
11:15
I kind of met you Laurie was
11:19
cast your mind back to national champs
11:21
2014 in ELISA yeah Saturday evening it
11:26
must have been kind of 6 p.m. or later I
11:28
remember it was still sunny and we were
11:30
heading up for a trap walk and on the
11:33
bottom section we'd come across this
11:35
young lad who's still on the hill all on
11:37
his own pushing up and hitting a section
11:39
over and over and it was a line between
11:41
two trees and it was you know it was bar
11:45
width plus a couple of inches on either
11:46
side and you were hitting it faster and
11:48
faster do you remember that at all yeah
11:53
dusty yeah it was yeah yeah I remember
11:59
we tried to you for a bit and you
12:01
explained why hitting that line was so
12:03
important and as impressive as it kind
12:05
of was the thing that struck me wasn't
12:08
the line at the time it was the fact
12:11
that we'd walk through the car park and
12:13
all the other young lads were down at
12:15
the bottom messing around trying to
12:17
impress the girls when each other
12:19
probably making a rotten art of building
12:22
a jumper award in some some bricks and
12:25
but you're not no interesting that
12:27
whatsoever you were just there hitting
12:28
this line over and over again have you
12:30
always had that that focused with you
12:32
racing does that come naturally yeah I
12:36
think so I think a lot of people would
12:43
say differently as well which is quite
12:44
funny but that that sort of things
12:46
always come so natural to me that night
12:49
sort of attention to detail yeah and
12:52
there I definitely explain myself as
12:55
being quite particular it really kind of
12:59
oh yeah just got a real high attention
13:03
to detail so I think stuff like that
13:05
sort of it's always been apart me
13:08
everything saying okay you won that
13:10
weekend taking the national title in
13:12
your first year as a junior a few weeks
13:15
later you grabbed a second marybelle
13:17
behind version and then he took a silver
13:19
medal at the worlds in hospital a couple
13:21
of weeks after that also behind Virgie
13:24
with with us the kind of initial moments
13:27
where you thought I can do this
13:32
yeah I guess the first time I stepped on
13:36
the World Cup box was there definitely
13:40
we're a bit of an explosion went on in
13:42
my head and I kind of realized that
13:44
things were starting to kind of take the
13:48
box this was thanks to x8 and I was
13:50
there yes definitely definitely knew
13:54
that none of us doing this for a reason
13:56
and there was no doubt in my head that
13:58
that was where I was on my way to yeah
14:03
definitely at that time when when I I
14:07
met you in Italy 'then and I remember
14:10
walking away and saying to benzy who I
14:12
was with you can see the difference
14:14
between someone who's gonna make it and
14:16
people who aren't yeah that in you and
14:20
that's why I followed you from there
14:22
just to see you know in my head where
14:24
you would make it to it it's nice to see
14:27
the way you've gone if you know what I
14:28
mean ya know it's funny
14:33
I've never really realized it but
14:36
obviously working with oli Morris this
14:38
year he's been helping me out kind of
14:39
all through offseason and with training
14:43
getting bike sir
14:44
okay he's gonna come and do some lines
14:46
body but yeah he always say so that
14:49
either say that I wouldn't believe the
14:51
amount of people that don't know what
14:53
I'm really like he says there's a real
14:57
bigger sort of kind of Sherrod I think
15:03
called being is really too late but
15:05
going but it doesn't it's not why not
15:08
really it's how I feel so much like a
15:19
sort of defense mechanism
15:22
yeah and I guess because you're in the
15:24
public eye it's easy for people to look
15:26
through the window get that initial
15:28
perception from you just from what you
15:30
portray yeah as you say they don't
15:33
really know who you are
15:35
whereas someone like me who spends all
15:37
that time with you knows what's poured
15:39
into it knows what you like and as
15:41
George just said like
15:43
there's not everyone who can be the best
15:45
in the world and to be the best in the
15:47
world you've got a you're gonna live and
15:49
breathe it so mmm 20 2015 year second
15:54
year junior you do Seco second at
15:57
Lourdes second at Fort William thirdly a
15:59
gang and then boom you go on this I mean
16:02
that's an amazing room but you go on a
16:04
really amazing run when's our hide first
16:07
national champs at Franklin Monson and
16:10
first at Windham Byrd Valdez Earl you
16:13
win the World Cups
16:14
Harry's gold at junior world champs in
16:17
Valmont
16:17
that's like a hell of a run tell us a
16:20
bit about what it feels like when you're
16:23
on a run like that and how you deal with
16:25
the pressure when you're the favorite to
16:27
win a race yeah
16:30
yes for me it's that thing once I've
16:34
done it once it's it's really on you
16:36
just know you know mentally they can
16:39
happen again so for me all the pressure
16:42
does relief I know for a lot of people
16:44
they say once you've done it once it's
16:46
really hard to do it again I seem to
16:48
find throughout everything whether it be
16:50
myself or BM a skateboard once I've done
16:54
one thing I want to do it seems to be
16:57
easy it's happen again it's oh yeah I
17:00
guess it's also when it's the first time
17:02
thing your team's start to realize you
17:05
can do they treat little bit differently
17:07
in it all the boxes starts just click
17:09
bone cells it's an amazing feeling when
17:13
you won that World Cup Series at what
17:16
point did you win it did you and you
17:17
want it before Val D sold before the
17:19
final round
17:20
yeah so won it in Windham I think it was
17:26
couple weeks before I can quote remember
17:29
but there we ended up the points in it
17:32
to know everyone there won the overall
17:33
already in when Doman yeah I think
17:36
that's why I remember so race I was so
17:38
scared about myself before world champs
17:41
yeah it's one of those things were too
17:45
near is probably an easiest
17:48
sound ever to try and secure the rainbow
17:51
so so I'm not going to die a happy man
17:54
and less and get the ring oh no I think
17:58
I'd take over third in the overall
18:03
Jersey was today really good weekend yo
18:07
man being so nervous before my run we
18:11
more we're more nervous before that run
18:14
or the world champs room
18:18
yeah how did he deal with that land
18:21
you're the favorite to win you've just
18:23
won the overall yeah I knew he was
18:31
racing that kind of shifted whole
18:35
confidence run I was getting going all
18:38
of a sudden there was another kid in the
18:39
next hit straight to the air they were
18:40
in the air so definitely back in the air
18:45
first time game they're serious thoughts
18:48
not yeah that's funny he'll better
18:51
weather than mine Laurie who you main
18:53
competitors when you were a second years
18:55
Union yeah if you remember Andrew
18:58
Crimmins remember him he was a royal
19:00
fast Ozzy junior writer I was going to
19:05
ask you about this because I when it did
19:07
some research obviously before I've done
19:08
his podcast and I saw his name coming up
19:11
again and again and I had never heard of
19:13
guy either he won didn't he won some
19:16
some World Cups I think he won in Leo
19:17
going if I remember right yeah he's
19:25
still a real fast road I think he's
19:27
they're just I think for some of those
19:30
Ozzy juniors coming over to Europe for
19:33
the first time racing the big races all
19:35
the travel all the time away from home
19:38
and all that pressure if you've started
19:40
winning as well as can be it's a big job
19:44
so in those first kind of years it's
19:48
quite precarious but especially if
19:51
you're from also I think is they're
19:52
quite easy to these a lot of detail the
19:55
travel strain pressure just living so
19:59
far away it and also you have to be a
20:01
certain
20:02
type of person don't you have to want it
20:04
and you have to love it basically yeah
20:08
and the other thing is am I right in
20:09
remembering did he start writing for
20:11
Kona yes yeah so the other thing is like
20:15
he's obviously doing very well as a
20:16
junior and then if you're not on the
20:18
best contract and you're having to
20:20
travel from Australia and you're away
20:22
from home all the time you might not be
20:23
really not much money as Laurie says you
20:25
a couple of races don't go your way and
20:27
it might be quite easy starts Wyatt so
20:35
you with Trek and you've won the World
20:36
Cup Series and the world champs and at
20:39
the end of the cities and you moved to
20:40
ms monde wrecker how why did that move
20:44
come about because I have thought Trek
20:46
would have done everything to try and
20:47
keep you there yeah I guess the first
20:50
kind of thing was the track World Racing
20:54
team was wasn't going to happen to the
20:56
next year those ready team mates decided
21:01
swear kind of yes it was up in the air
21:07
to know what track would do not I heard
21:09
rumors of them being with the effort ins
21:11
but maybe no and maybe this so I was
21:15
pretty desperate to secure myself a bit
21:18
of a and a sports sooner than late over
21:20
there yeah yes also let's draw the line
21:26
but it's been a good Junior sort of
21:29
couple years and it was it was
21:32
definitely going to be a big change
21:33
going to release I thought also felt
21:35
like a bigger a big change in a new
21:38
style really I got to run things up and
21:41
I was like you're not scared to change
21:43
teams if you know what I mean yeah kind
21:47
of I was a little scared as yes there
21:52
was more effective my old team there
21:53
kind of stopping running another she's
21:56
making it were there options had on the
21:58
table a spoke so I remember speaking to
22:00
our kiss when I was in there because I
22:03
would have been on Dora world's than
22:05
just there just got such a good vibe
22:08
from the going really really enjoyed how
22:11
we was putting everything across and
22:13
yeah I've been on the team
22:16
since oh yeah he just had a real good
22:18
friendly sort of really felt like you're
22:22
on the same level as him kind of in what
22:25
you both want aired and also how how we
22:27
kind of said he wanted to treat the team
22:31
so yeah just from speaking to him
22:35
earlier just to would be the right thing
22:37
to do
22:38
nice well good memories from the
22:40
tractors those two years were yeah they
22:43
were cool man is one year so we me in
22:49
some of the truck boys ran into a place
22:51
in in Germany so we spent the whole
22:53
summer together I just say rhodium
22:58
especially with Brooke and roses Kiwis
23:00
opened my eyes up to these things we're
23:07
pretty different to anything I've sort
23:10
of done before it's real fun just there
23:13
yes it was a cool cool good fun
23:15
atmosphere with those boys I think I'd
23:17
already know the answer to this book
23:18
who's the rider on on that track team
23:21
that gave you the most help when you
23:22
were a junior
23:24
yes sir Brooke Brooke Brooke was real
23:28
cool we was there I remember on my first
23:33
thing was the first team campy he sat
23:36
down next to me decided you and followed
23:38
me races and me to handle anything he
23:40
just hit me up say he's real good he
23:43
just saw one of those dudes saying you'd
23:47
be decided to see like serious first
23:51
glance said yeah luckily just he was
23:54
real cool real help me out you've spent
23:57
must be a kind of pro career with Brooke
24:00
have you spoken to him recently how's he
24:02
doing yeah he seems obviously we were
24:07
pretty scared but when he broke his back
24:09
in Monson and in there yes first it was
24:13
a big relief especially someone I was
24:16
kind of sort of associated woke up
24:18
racing in mind my job my tray was so yes
24:22
there was a heavy place the team and has
24:25
been real cool to see his progress and
24:26
how hard he's working but
24:29
to be honest he came with Peter bedtime
24:34
you have any idea when he'll be when
24:36
he'll be back
24:38
he wanted to be back for round three in
24:41
the World Cup this year was there so he
24:45
was looking to cool about the sugar was
24:47
looking it coming back to there he
24:49
wasn't sure I don't think him I'm not
24:52
sure in the inspections they seemed
24:54
really seriously about it yet was quite
24:56
a while ago but that was a that was a
24:59
mercury set I think yeah I think I think
25:03
it's probably sort of a good idea kissa
25:06
P we come back when you are actually
25:08
completely ready
25:09
it's go time everyone knows you're
25:12
completely ready but if you come back
25:14
when you're still getting the ball
25:15
rolling and you join if you tell the
25:18
media it's only your team and friends
25:20
your family just gonna go in there you
25:23
know you might then practice and then
25:24
pulled out a dino mode and Rowleys and
25:26
then just you get used to being in that
25:29
race environment again and just be
25:31
around the time you're ready to go
25:32
you're you you're at home Serling
25:35
absolutely Donovan I'm Maria speaking
25:38
too much about that I could kind of
25:39
understand why he would do that
25:42
also the break is so 2016 got a really
25:54
solid kind of first season in Italy you
25:56
were eight at Fort William nine that
25:58
vowel nod and he finished 14th in the
26:01
overall then we all had it - probably
26:03
soul for worlds and you grab a silver
26:05
medal the whole team finished one two
26:07
three you know everyone knows about that
26:09
talk us through that weekend a bit yeah
26:13
but we can was preachers probably I
26:17
remember going in feeling like I was
26:20
really getting to grips with Stafford
26:23
got used to being in here leaked angry
26:24
got my bike real dialed in sort of Cena
26:27
that takes a bit of time when you first
26:28
kind of evokes a Sarah yeah my dad was
26:33
there and that weekend for some reason
26:35
we just
26:37
yes it really felt like the real deal
26:39
your first a neat world to slay all
26:42
systems firing semi-double zone we're
26:45
just going to such a good role on track
26:47
like he was being there traded
26:49
mastermind coming up with all these
26:51
crazy lines that no one else is doing
26:54
here though it's just a real good week
26:56
from start to finish we're working for a
26:58
while the team and my dad's up of course
27:02
good some definitely one of those ones
27:07
where the first two rains the weekend go
27:11
real well than one year you're sort of
27:14
on cloud nine for the rest it's like
27:16
especially with me any any opportunity I
27:19
get to really go fool hundred times for
27:26
a few minutes is I can it's easy so I'm
27:28
pretty aware of how dangerous it is and
27:31
the edge every time you writing them so
27:36
known for being quite at least going
27:37
camera that if you actually in practice
27:39
I often and when I watch some of the
27:42
vote rules and start to feel like I'm
27:44
licking like one of the kind of taking
27:48
this slow guys on track say no I yeah as
27:54
he said earlier he does always look
27:56
calculated and that'll feed into one of
27:58
the questions I wrote later about the
28:01
bow the soul run from last year but yeah
28:02
yeah then when you quit school yeah when
28:06
you've got you your family at home
28:08
wanting to give it you just give it 100
28:10
percent you throw your friends and your
28:13
dad just wanting you to clear absolutely
28:19
online it's like it really is an excuse
28:21
to just so fully drop the hammer on it
28:24
it kind of be a change you got if you're
28:28
going down you've got very serious
28:29
support there yeah it's just a real sort
28:34
of feeling that everyone you know wants
28:36
you to just give their 100% and it's
28:38
just like a takes the men who train off
28:41
so hurting yourself of anything so make
28:43
sure you say which is why I think you
28:46
love this really never racing
28:48
well when the dust had settled we could
28:50
just buzzing to be on the podium or was
28:53
there a tiny bit a disappointment that
28:55
you'd come ii would have been so many
29:09
interview so much precious so much stuff
29:13
go on over the offseason yes you piece
29:15
titled okay a contract race missing
29:18
crazy stuff for quite a young age in
29:21
your first year you releasing I think
29:24
gain second on that day for me looking
29:28
back on it I think was the best result
29:30
possible to enable me to kind of really
29:34
see that it was that close but also
29:36
there was a lot of work that needed to
29:39
happen and I could also do from the same
29:41
moment I sort of just got used to you
29:44
your first year I mean say no I think
29:48
that I was I kind of realized that pre
29:51
see they were saying the best result on
29:54
the day yeah cool do you think there is
29:58
something about the mom Drecker and
30:00
Baldassare yeah I guess there seems to
30:03
be a lot of people who think so instead
30:06
of fact you give results a it's there
30:08
it's definitely one of those folks that
30:10
is a it's just a rough ground eater say
30:16
girl rough tracks it seems to always
30:19
feel the best on so winter 2016 I think
30:22
you're headed out to New Zealand
30:23
something you've done regularly I think
30:26
talk us through what motivated that
30:28
decision and what you've learned from
30:30
from being out there
30:33
yeah I guess so I had been there before
30:37
just for a few weeks for my family and
30:39
yeah yes just so getting to know the
30:44
Kiwis from Georgia broken yeah having a
30:47
while throughout the earring and just
30:49
the prospects of missing winter I think
30:51
was there but the idea of that to me was
30:55
mental so yeah packed up in that for
30:57
their guy got a band I didn't have a
30:59
whole lot of cash yet so I got a van and
31:03
lived in that for for five months out
31:05
there as awesome time yeah and it must
31:10
have like developed a lot of life skills
31:13
as doing that as well as you know I
31:16
suppose keeping the fitness and the
31:18
biking going but a lot of life skills
31:20
while you're out there the other side of
31:22
the world I went and lived on the other
31:23
side of the world for five months and it
31:26
changed me quite a lot as a person
31:29
yeah I think just being on the other
31:33
side of the world without your parents
31:36
living without it being erased for the
31:39
first time is quite open oh yeah just
31:43
you learned that is pretty hard to
31:46
manage yourself when it's only you know
31:49
sort of doing your schedule and just
31:51
trying to make the most out your time
31:53
comes quite hard without without someone
31:56
at home some kind of your trainer for
32:00
example telling you when to drain when
32:02
to this and to do that and there so
32:04
living at home so with your family is
32:07
pretty hard is there - I spent my first
32:10
trip away I would say
32:13
it was more about the experience that
32:16
troops than a full-on so doing the best
32:20
thing at possibly could for the next
32:23
year it was sort a lot of experience was
32:25
done in their tool of local stuff and
32:29
yeah training wise I probably would have
32:34
been better off staying at home where
32:36
home-cooked meal every now and again I'm
32:39
trained with my trainers in the whole
32:43
it's sort of always feel like you should
32:46
only do what you really feel like you
32:49
should do I don't like to rush yeah
32:55
young kid Oh Justin pretty well world
32:58
champs it's time to go have a laugh and
33:00
Gannett get as much riding in and
33:02
five-time as I possibly could to yes
33:06
definitely was beginning to start to
33:09
understand but more than mechanics and
33:11
geometry different lengths of this and
33:14
that so it was good to just go away and
33:16
right yeah just start to get my head
33:21
around being a professional athlete off
33:24
my over but 2017 you had another solid
33:27
year with like when you first world cup
33:29
podium at lens I hide 2018 you go one
33:33
better you go third at lea going then
33:34
second at Val D so for that Val mold
33:38
finishing fifth in the overall it's like
33:41
textbook isn't it it's if there's a
33:44
perfect trajectory to kind of be your
33:46
honor Anya are you taking these things
33:48
off as you go along but kind of I guess
33:54
so mentally I set myself a goal for the
33:58
year yeah and so far it's almost always
34:03
been fully completed by the end of the
34:05
year but most of all I like to set
34:07
realistic goals for me personally not
34:11
anyone else so yeah I'm smoking quite a
34:15
lot and pass about so we're taking what
34:19
the best so if you
34:22
for these were that were my age and what
34:25
they did in the past and comparing
34:27
yourself you like right in 2019 that
34:31
person got a second and did this in the
34:33
overall that that was why I needed to do
34:36
to sort of thing right just look at what
34:38
riders have done in the past and if I
34:40
couldn't do that at the same age as them
34:44
then things weren't going well yeah it
34:49
kind of makes it feel like people have
34:51
done it you work on you do it sort of
34:54
thing obviously the sports always
34:56
progressing it's gonna be hard it's do
34:59
it but just basing yourself off what
35:01
other people done I guess kind of makes
35:04
it seem career realistic
35:06
I never thought about about that concept
35:09
before Nia yeah I was looking at when I
35:13
was obviously when I was researching
35:14
this I was looking at the previous
35:16
Junior World Champions and I think it
35:19
was Troy won it twice I think it might
35:21
have been 10 and 11 and then like the
35:24
year after so if they weren't in 12 and
35:28
you won it and was it 15 so you're kind
35:32
of there at that peak I would say now
35:34
they're at the top of the sport but
35:37
you're kind of knocking on the door
35:39
they're a lot younger than their well I
35:42
supposed to like was knocking on the
35:44
door at that age wasn't it yeah yeah so
35:48
on to last season think
35:54
someone told me may have been even
35:56
durably Dena Walker on this podcast that
35:58
he didn't trace the ixs in Mary Bob
36:01
because you didn't want to be bought the
36:04
track for the World Cup the week after
36:06
yeah he's all right yeah definitely
36:12
for me I really struggle with if I'm not
36:16
so I gained something new I hope
36:18
retracted I'm not learning something so
36:23
keeping on building I really struggled
36:26
to just smash out run off to run off and
36:29
enjoy myself so normally when I start to
36:33
get a bit comfortable and a bit so I
36:38
wouldn't say over it a bit all of the
36:42
track I tend to start crashing and I end
36:44
up going slow how it's a hard one but
36:49
for the first World Cup looking back on
36:51
it I think it probably should have gone
36:53
because it's just that first time
36:55
getting the team together it's like
36:58
getting the bank back together and doing
36:59
you first dress rehearsal yeah that's
37:03
going to be yeah
37:06
to be honest um I don't like to do do a
37:09
race on a track before the track is just
37:12
because I wanted to be fair for everyone
37:14
as well as yeah it's kind of how quickly
37:17
does it take you to kind of get bored of
37:20
a track and at what point would you
37:23
start slowing down so I've had to do a
37:27
few test sessions before the day after a
37:29
welcome yeah when you're like just just
37:34
so over it you've feet to this point
37:37
about the best you can possibly get and
37:41
you're not going to get there again the
37:43
next day
37:43
unless you've crashed in the finals or
37:45
something like that so sometimes you'll
37:47
be testing with free light poles with
37:49
there and you know new tonight they
37:52
motor our new shark or tires motor
37:55
developed or something other than you
37:56
you can just never get to that same
37:59
speed you up before and yeah this it's
38:03
so difficult so for me if I'm
38:08
three four days max and that's it
38:11
winter once Sanremo this offseason we
38:16
did we did five days out there
38:19
by the third day all sorts Ines of peach
38:21
fourth day started pushing my liking on
38:24
the fifth day I was oh right
38:26
so united some I'm not writing for the
38:29
rest of today and just Johnny head slam
38:32
the game anymore so yeah three or four
38:36
notes that too tired and start to make
38:38
mistakes and get frustrated with
38:40
yourself and you just you start to slip
38:44
because you know the trucks arrive well
38:46
the the first world cup didn't go too
38:48
bad you seeded fourth finished ninth
38:51
15th or Fort William you were twelve
38:54
seconds back on a mallory which came
38:56
back now on kind of what you achieved
38:58
last season his fair distance were you
39:00
pair in on the weather in Fort William
39:03
more than the weather going to pass
39:11
couple seasons I'd always run a neck
39:14
brace and right in the neck brace to not
39:18
write it neck brace trained easy writing
39:19
style massively in fur but that year I
39:22
think of taking it off and being able to
39:24
sort of being that much further over the
39:26
bars and that much more that much lower
39:29
on your bike yes people were open that
39:32
grace tend to write quite upright and
39:34
people without can get quite a lot more
39:36
and have spread of the virus in the boat
39:38
began to feel really different and
39:43
really sketchy to wait it before as
39:45
their yeah definitely no shame in it
39:48
mean I was really struggling at the
39:50
staff started the air to trying to get
39:53
that feeling back that seemed to have
39:55
performer the same size by some reason
39:59
it'll change so we we started kind of a
40:03
few weeks before that thought will then
40:05
woke up to try and get the sizing thing
40:07
down we got here a little bit for
40:10
falling but we really under the nail on
40:14
the head yet knows I was getting quite
40:15
frustrated so getting used to this new
40:18
so writing style and
40:21
was very conscious about a style of five
40:26
right here wouldn't it to have and what
40:29
what we were getting back from kind of
40:31
video me and the team helping out with
40:34
Jenny syrup says I was getting quite
40:36
frustrated trying to get that alright in
40:38
it sir don't think it really clicked
40:42
into at least Endora that yeah I think
40:44
that was the first time that I've really
40:47
to feel you get kind of liking when I
40:51
feel good on the bike you already get
40:52
like a sense of being almost really
40:55
cocky and especially in terms you just
40:58
feel like no matter what you do you're
41:00
not going down you just know it's all
41:02
gonna work it's like a real sense that
41:04
yes yes I haven't really been named that
41:10
so far wasn't that happy was their soul
41:13
replays I was watching back on their on
41:15
the revelry places yeah don't think it
41:18
all got go on a console at least and or
41:21
is this all linked to the heard you talk
41:23
somewhere about changing the body
41:24
position was that before last season and
41:26
is that all linked to the to the neck
41:28
brace yeah kind of the process over the
41:32
course of a few days Rooney first took
41:35
the brace off and then realized I could
41:37
sort of start to use different
41:39
techniques and positions and stuff and
41:42
just took a couple years to really get
41:45
to I guess well right now which is
41:48
they're always working pro dancer
41:51
you took 19 Endora then third English
41:55
year and then we arrived in Valdez well
41:58
yes oh well thus all high expectations
42:01
on you to win a senior World Cup after
42:03
your performances as a junior and before
42:07
the mouth saw wind did you ever feel
42:09
like you weren't going to manage it or
42:10
did you always feel like you were on an
42:11
upward curve towards the wind I don't
42:15
know I guess they go the pole booth or
42:17
rolling quite early on in the first
42:20
summer when I loved that track and every
42:22
time they get that star okay that kind
42:24
of get this good feeling that something
42:27
today could go down yeah
42:33
definitely knew that it was on if
42:35
everything went right in followed that
42:38
through to race day just had one of
42:41
those moments where you you're in the
42:42
Stargate you know I think this is this
42:48
is definitely on now and you just saw
42:52
did have just had a general good feeling
42:55
yeah I mean I was gonna ask you did you
42:57
feel like did you feel like it was yours
43:00
for the taking going into the weekend or
43:03
was that feeling that developed after
43:04
you on the track I'm all had the feeling
43:08
that it could be on so I kind of I'm
43:14
very aware that I think anyone in the
43:16
top 15 if they just lay down this huge
43:19
run then my opinion on it is any risk
43:23
it's off take the win that day all the
43:27
boxes ticked so definitely thought it
43:29
could be on I don't think I don't think
43:34
no matter how good sort of seasons local
43:38
or Greg or P for example mo had in the
43:42
past I don't think you can over this or
43:45
say it's yours
43:47
as you just said there's so many guys
43:50
who could take it when they're laid out
43:51
would run oh yeah it would be massively
43:54
arrogant I guess - hey Shoom it was
43:57
yours before you got there
44:00
do you find it does it help you or Hindi
44:03
you if you're aware of people around you
44:05
in the pits and other riders for example
44:07
saying things like it'll happen soon for
44:10
your laws or you know that this kind of
44:12
vibe that everyone was expecting you to
44:13
win eventually
44:14
does that help you build up confidence
44:16
or is it a bit of a negative pressure I
44:18
guess for me it helps me build
44:21
confidence compared to if kind of no one
44:26
said anything so yeah depends if it's
44:31
flat out in your day every day I guess
44:34
it could be a bit much but definitely
44:36
not as bad as I would say never any sort
44:40
of thing so time so no I guess
44:47
good feedback nice so talk us through
44:50
the feeling when you won that race then
44:51
I was in saying literally no putting
44:57
that one into words it is definitely add
45:00
this feeling of one day I could actually
45:05
retire a happy man whenever that maybe
45:08
you just feel like this this got huge
45:11
sense of everything I've been working
45:13
for no matter how fun it's been in my
45:16
head it's always been to reach that
45:19
level and when I woke up one day says
45:22
there's a big weight off my shoulders I
45:25
think is so fair yeah just knowing you
45:28
hadn't wasted a lot of time in the
45:30
German really slaving yourself and
45:33
making all those commitments I mean it's
45:35
hard to imagine when you're not actually
45:37
racing in the sport how much dedication
45:39
and sacrifice go into it growing up
45:43
socially I mean we've got whole
45:46
offseason
45:46
like I said been to New Zealand had
45:50
whole off seasons at home done my fair
45:51
share of but it really does require a
45:58
lot of sacrifice and just really knowing
46:01
that it was all worth it and it and that
46:04
it did feel as good as I hoped it would
46:06
feel what happens I guess until you
46:08
until you actually achieve something
46:11
that you've been working so hard towards
46:13
yeah it's almost a bit of a scare that
46:16
when it does happen it might not quite
46:18
feel like you so hoped it would to say
46:21
no it was kind of really hard to things
46:29
worse all the time it was quite
46:30
emotional for me and my family and they
46:33
just called a can I just ask you Laurie
46:38
we talked a little bit earlier about you
46:40
being on this trajectory was that the
46:43
goal for last season to win a World Cup
46:46
yeah if you spoke to definite my trainer
46:51
or my dad or all myself I'd say it was
46:54
the go hushirat' yeah if I was going to
46:56
keep up with it off what brilliant idea
47:00
it done in the past then in yeah the
47:03
goal is definitely to get one under the
47:04
bell this year nice so you may not
47:07
remember but I was actually following
47:10
you down involve us all finals after
47:12
qualifying seventh yeah go say I love
47:16
the vibe at the top I obviously don't
47:18
get to enjoy it as much as you do
47:19
but if you are coming down late in the
47:22
day there's not many riders up there
47:23
it's not as chaos today nice long time
47:27
gaps yeah I have a like a routine I go
47:31
through to help control my emotions when
47:34
I'm up there for that kind of
47:35
three-and-a-half minute gap between the
47:37
riders I won't get in the gate until
47:39
there's about two minutes to go when I'm
47:42
in there or kind of maybe have a little
47:43
look around you'll I might have a little
47:45
think about the track keep myself calm
47:47
goggles don't go on until is less than a
47:50
minute to go
47:52
that day I remember the rider before you
47:55
leave in a cut remember who it was and I
47:58
remember seeing you roll straight into
47:59
the gate go straight on and you say
48:02
three and a half minutes pedaling
48:05
backwards hands on you bars looking down
48:07
the track head kind of bobbing a bit
48:10
like you look like you're about to go
48:13
into battle and I remember even saying
48:14
to my dad who was with me at the top
48:16
like there's a man on a mission
48:20
my question is was that routine that day
48:25
what you always do or was will you just
48:28
show into it that that was something
48:30
different can you can you remember
48:32
[Music]
48:34
yeah yes I sort of could say I born up
48:39
in a similar manner I guess for me
48:41
really looking out into the mountains
48:45
and gained a bib so bringing it all down
48:48
a bit is quite important to me kind of
48:51
really as my hide in the zone and just
48:53
getting good breathing going like you
48:55
heard I fun just from like reaching out
48:59
and looking out over the hills and stuff
49:01
you you take yourself out with this
49:03
really serious nervous little bubble
49:06
that you actually sat in so you kind of
49:09
you're breaking out without a bit and
49:11
getting a bit of
49:13
you'll note from being Ray said that
49:15
Joan in the gun drawn way up on your
49:18
turbo training you might just want to
49:20
wander into worst case scenario what
49:24
would happen if he knows case that won't
49:25
go what would happen if this happened
49:28
what would happen if you know one shot
49:29
that burns and brake failed it's quite
49:34
hard to k2 that so yes really going in
49:38
early and just bringing myself down the
49:40
noxious air yeah it's the one for me and
49:44
and as xxxii was rolling around I
49:47
snapped back into into the moment in
49:50
just really sort of feel quite a lot
49:53
more relaxed and iolair nice cool so was
49:58
that run full fire from the get-go with
50:01
more speed than you'd planned you
50:03
mentioned a couple of minutes ago that
50:05
there's 15 or so riders who if
50:07
everything goes right on the delay they
50:09
could lay down that run was that the
50:12
pre-planned run that you executed or or
50:14
on the day was it was it more than that
50:18
compared to previous point in runs I'm
50:21
hadn't and also good runs of our solar
50:24
photos actually felt
50:28
tamer than any of my runs in the past I
50:32
think because it was kind of looking
50:36
back on the run for me and Rohde exactly
50:37
how I wanted to it was nothing like the
50:39
previous runs I don't know it's a lot
50:41
smoother you're gonna use my legs that
50:45
are on the track like that you've really
50:47
got trying to I know when you know this
50:50
it's so easy to start taking it all on
50:52
your arms and getting real real into it
50:55
but you've just gotta kind of taste that
50:57
back to let your legs do the work these
50:59
muscles in you could he just just
51:04
putting a bit of a different spin on it
51:07
which is compared to other tracks like
51:09
Leogane you've got be so so up and into
51:12
it and ready and you've gotta be ready
51:14
to really spring pump every obstacles
51:17
well it's just not as much of a rough
51:20
track so just being able to kind of sit
51:23
into your legs and look ahead on that
51:25
track and
51:26
this is pretty cheesy yeah they actually
51:28
felt easier than previous runs I've had
51:32
audience for sure there's a weird one
51:34
yeah it's I like your answer because I
51:37
would agree from watching the footage of
51:40
yourself I've watched it it's a hug
51:41
because my runs right after you have
51:43
tuned in and yeah yeah it almost makes
51:48
me angry because Claudio's commentary a
51:52
couple of times he comments on on house
51:55
I don't know if he says sketchy or he
51:57
says something and I completely disagree
51:59
with him my next question was did did
52:03
you feel like you nearly crashed at any
52:04
point but on the bits that are on the
52:06
camera the screens you look completely
52:08
in control
52:09
yeah no it felt like he could rather
52:11
mean visibly you could say I was just
52:16
cruising in places where the people
52:18
peddling so felt like it was actually
52:20
fairly controlled compared to sort of
52:25
the few other ones in the past is er so
52:28
see well cut run see oversee cracking on
52:30
but compared to a lot runs in the past
52:32
it was definitely held back again I know
52:35
that Claudio likes to play devil's
52:38
advocate most weekends so I kind of
52:43
that's war of a duck's back because that
52:45
he does every time he's a bad cop good
52:49
cop bad cop I think no yes
52:55
pretty surprising for me that
52:59
you can win one and be and feel like
53:02
that nicely and control yeah I guess you
53:06
just found that rhythm and once you're
53:08
off cuz you you won by almost three
53:11
seconds and for how tight race and was
53:13
last year that's a big achievement after
53:18
doing that run and the description
53:20
you've just given it how hard do you
53:22
feel it is too now go on and keep
53:25
repeating those those runs that are
53:27
going to be about yes sir
53:29
the next weekend in Linz either honest
53:31
on cloud nine it's just like throwing
53:34
whips and just be gem stroke in turns
53:37
really loving just you know like you say
53:41
on cloud nine really just say victory
53:44
lightning sideways for the me here and
53:46
how many gets home and felt really good
53:48
at the same time it was such a such an
53:52
emotional spike that sort of Monday
53:56
Tuesday Wednesday realizing that you
53:59
sort of want a World Cup it was hard to
54:01
get in the zone for things either
54:03
funnily enough I know a lot of people
54:05
have that thing like I actually had in
54:07
junior they say with a gold roll but but
54:10
that one was such a gnarly achievement
54:14
for me kind of realizing that you ticked
54:19
off such a huge oxide yeah it was hard
54:24
to get into the zone there but once that
54:28
week ended being indoor nothing we went
54:30
to rent a world Trump's them which my
54:36
race running world champs was exactly
54:38
the same I kind of felt
54:40
felt really on it and just had one of
54:44
those things like I said for bone so
54:46
were you just in the zone all the boxes
54:48
taped it's another big rough track
54:50
taking it all in the Backson it really
54:53
was going that I would say before I got
54:57
the puncture and in Monson Annie
55:00
and even after I got the puncture I
55:02
would say some of the best was there I
55:06
think I won I can't remember if it was a
55:09
top three or I won a split but I wanna
55:12
split in Montana with a rear flat which
55:16
was I know looking back on it even
55:21
though I had one flat I was so in the
55:22
zone and it was all clicking even like a
55:24
peep about my solo kind of it was so
55:28
relatable to to how I knew I could
55:31
personally yeah or how I needed to ride
55:34
for it to happen there but she's think
55:36
such as only got to the bottom there was
55:38
that that minnow everything they come
55:41
away and I just tried to say it with a
55:43
full flat and down off the brush is in
55:46
there ended up 7th of thing which was
55:52
for anyone who doesn't know that story
55:54
isn't a great result but for me that was
55:56
like my favorite of my career it's like
56:02
oh yeah just to be that in the zone with
56:05
a flat just somehow keep here or going
56:08
it felt awesome especially yeah
56:12
especially after kind of brokering
56:15
himself up only the day before is there
56:18
or two couple days before was pretty
56:22
hard to go then getting to the zone for
56:25
racing so I was quite proud of myself
56:27
that we came first or not late enough
56:30
face me
56:32
journey into that zoning and continuing
56:34
in that zone even [ __ ] was going really
56:37
badly from from some kind of start to
56:40
finish on that trip so yeah I think
56:43
think wants to know how ya feeling is I
56:47
think I can do it again so my my kind of
56:51
train of thought on Mel
56:54
memory of last season was that you win
56:56
volatile and then I saw an interview
56:58
kind of you could see the spike you've
57:01
called the emotional spy and then I saw
57:04
a thing saying how exhausted you were
57:05
the following week after and you had
57:07
focus and then mistakenly I thought
57:10
you'd gone kind of off the bubble and I
57:12
thought you know he's achieved this
57:14
massive thing this is I'm fearfully he
57:16
how would you talk us like again but
57:19
then when like you said 16 lens I hide
57:22
IRD down as being six that world 12
57:25
things to know Xiu Yin the season
57:27
seventh in the overall fifth and sixth
57:29
and Mark Wallace in eggs do you feel
57:32
like you have a place now at the top
57:33
table of downhill especially after that
57:36
World Cup win yeah I mean certainly
57:40
after the win this offseason was kind of
57:46
I could have probably pushed for a
57:48
little more money on my contract could
57:50
have probably pushed for a bit more
57:53
money in sort of different aspects of
57:56
the whole thing but I decided with my
57:58
team I didn't want to change my contract
58:02
but I wanted to get my mechanic more pay
58:04
and to hire someone that was sort of my
58:06
skills coaches Eli Peters with the
58:09
Oncourse lines buy anything for the rest
58:11
of the team as well but someone I can
58:13
work in we can week out at home decided
58:17
to try and really push
58:19
for the kind of the full bubble rather
58:22
than just my personal package I can run
58:24
away with ya decided to work on the team
58:27
and to try and really step out I try to
58:29
know where did you buy to develop as
58:32
well so I guess there was so much going
58:35
on this year and that it really required
58:37
a completely new kind of approach oh I
58:41
moved out got a flat breast or just
58:45
definitely really soak a fine-tooth comb
58:50
to it and gave me a good crackers I've
58:53
never approached here before what kind
58:55
of but seriously in that that motivated
58:58
and also I think just moving our home
59:04
getting its own bills shown here your
59:07
own actual adult life going is very
59:10
different to sign your parents house
59:12
with it kind of all being a bit of a
59:15
pulse I think just working on a loan
59:18
maturity outside the sport and outside
59:21
of cycling completely and really just
59:24
trying to share scared all my soror
59:27
organizational stuff more bass in there
59:30
yeah get the full package running a bit
59:33
smoother was sort of something that you
59:36
never been even close to done in the
59:40
past and being home a winter and if I
59:42
live on the same road as my trainer
59:44
pretty much see just yeah every gym
59:49
membership I mean I didn't have a gym
59:51
membership this offseason every session
59:53
was with my trainer says there's you
59:57
really can't like you had to be on it so
1:00:00
yes pretty cool being trusted to be able
1:00:05
to develop a body can kind of have the
1:00:09
leverage to make the team better in the
1:00:11
hole it required a lot more people
1:00:14
management for me kind of happy working
1:00:18
kind of more with my mechanicing kind of
1:00:22
skills coach we were at home sore took a
1:00:25
lot of
1:00:28
yeah I guess it's quite hard this veins
1:00:30
just so different it's a lot more mature
1:00:33
realist to make it work that yeah it's a
1:00:37
shame it didn't didn't kind of get to
1:00:40
the point why would you test it to see
1:00:42
if it was it was working cases such as
1:00:45
such a different approach well well we
1:00:47
we've got some questions obviously about
1:00:49
the bike and stuff but there's a good
1:00:51
place to take a quick break we'll be
1:00:53
back with the revolution bike part big
1:00:56
questions after these messages
1:01:04
on to the revolution back part big
1:01:06
questions then to from me to start with
1:01:08
and then to from Jack question number
1:01:10
one what's your favorite track on the
1:01:12
World Cup circuit favorite ride stopping
1:01:18
by the so because they're the memories
1:01:20
and it's just so wrong it's like hardly
1:01:25
my made from start to finish so rough so
1:01:28
it's a pure mountain biking it's a it's
1:01:33
it's in its rawest form an assist it's
1:01:36
one of those ones where people call it
1:01:38
moments track sort of thing so I think
1:01:40
just how Rama is and or is another good
1:01:49
one it's another long track but just
1:01:54
those terms in the bike tracks that was
1:01:59
there have you picked the two steepest
1:02:01
tracks there would you say yeah um do
1:02:06
you think being a kind of short a rider
1:02:09
it helps you on the steep stuff I've had
1:02:15
my opinions on what tracks seesaw
1:02:18
varieties what track see the road is
1:02:20
over the time but I feel like I'm at a
1:02:25
point now I've done weather most of them
1:02:29
like a podium that Leo young before
1:02:33
which is the polar opposite I guess I'm
1:02:38
more suited to the steeple roughest
1:02:40
stuff you have surprised myself along
1:02:43
the way these days with other venues and
1:02:46
services to be honest I'm not really
1:02:49
sure I I'm still to find the perfect
1:02:53
size down the road and what that means
1:02:55
that seems to be that anyone can win any
1:02:58
track it's really really so very cool I
1:03:01
don't really know many of the sports
1:03:02
where you could get me Danny
1:03:07
and pea bullets podium at the same track
1:03:12
it so every different type of Road rule
1:03:14
in one
1:03:16
I don't think it matters just get on
1:03:19
your bike and go for us question number
1:03:23
two which section of track on the World
1:03:25
Cup circuit do you find the most
1:03:27
difficult to race which section of air
1:03:29
track so I thought
1:03:44
sorry gone there's often struggle with
1:03:48
aiming going from a halt and ass off the
1:03:53
back eyo just hanging on so all of a
1:03:57
sudden you over the breaks in the
1:03:59
tighten and all of the sudden you've got
1:04:00
to be this powerhouse at the bonus so
1:04:02
you've really got me kind of adaptable
1:04:06
the whole way down to what what you ride
1:04:08
it you can't just say to the shooter to
1:04:11
be honest the the sex the section
1:04:14
changes in pulling the the hardest for
1:04:17
me just adapting that quickly to the
1:04:19
completely different worries yes very
1:04:22
hard any any will cook track that you
1:04:27
really want to win on obviously also got
1:04:30
me one nice if I dare change thoughts
1:04:34
moments little moments of brilliance and
1:04:37
Paul Berlin before one a time practice
1:04:42
there once and had little snippets are
1:04:45
starting to ramp up insert that I just
1:04:49
thought should be crushed this year well
1:04:51
not this year
1:04:53
he was my first year mum Drakkar on my
1:04:56
second year wondering you there and it
1:04:58
did take me back a bit I've never done
1:05:00
that well that's in something that
1:05:01
crashed rest room thinking just cast a
1:05:04
bit of a gray area richest kids there
1:05:08
just because of that robot was the crash
1:05:11
Lauren yeah is that went Arnie did her
1:05:19
she just in front right yeah yeah I
1:05:23
think I've gotten the head round it now
1:05:25
I've realized that most of the reason
1:05:28
why I'd
1:05:30
so I've gone with it in the past couple
1:05:33
years been due to my own head I think so
1:05:35
yeah we'd love to win there be a big
1:05:40
good sort of person or treatment for me
1:05:43
really struggling the past as well
1:05:45
nope nice so you're not known for your
1:05:48
performances at domestic events I don't
1:05:50
think you disagree with me there why do
1:05:53
you think that is just a UK events you
1:05:57
mean oh yeah for me during the season
1:06:02
I'm quite conscious of just keeping my
1:06:07
mind and body sort of really intact for
1:06:10
woke up so funny quite hard to motivate
1:06:12
myself for trying to point along the
1:06:16
line of my sword winces I don't know
1:06:19
when a British team anything like that
1:06:21
says I drove to the race in my burn I
1:06:24
don't get prize money if I do well they
1:06:26
don't wish isn't a part of it for me
1:06:28
anyway but it's all of these things do
1:06:31
stack up to me sort fare less compared
1:06:38
to risk to benefit kind of Europe yeah
1:06:42
so all the time I've just enjoyed a bit
1:06:45
of downtime and using them as a bit of a
1:06:48
tool to to keep in the game and keep
1:06:51
keep this kind of working towards things
1:06:54
going but but never never really feel
1:06:58
that nervous for a British run really
1:07:03
yeah I'm not so disappointed if I don't
1:07:07
do well or stuff like that but do you
1:07:10
aspire to be British national jumper
1:07:13
yeah I think here you can't be a world
1:07:16
champion be the country's champ along
1:07:19
the way so yeah this is actually a
1:07:21
really I kind of touched on it earlier
1:07:25
side I only
1:07:31
selfishly enough do things Azzam when I
1:07:33
feel like it's the right time so
1:07:36
throughout the past few years I've sold
1:07:40
not had in control on how I've looked at
1:07:43
those racism online has just decided
1:07:45
that that's how we go sort of thing says
1:07:49
one of the things I'm sure starts
1:07:52
getting a bit of a desire to do in the
1:07:53
next couple years I know her definitely
1:07:56
sat down with Olli Morrison put big gold
1:08:00
star it's the national champs this year
1:08:01
everybody was buying on giving it a bit
1:08:03
more of a go so they wrote races are
1:08:06
starting to kind of creep back into the
1:08:09
equation now I found my feet in the lead
1:08:11
many things just taking over like the
1:08:15
day job you notes no know how to race
1:08:17
now I know everyone in my team I know I
1:08:19
know how the big boys operate so just
1:08:23
I've been a bit more tiny to actually
1:08:26
spend on doing other things is there
1:08:27
it's just gonna come naturally nice on
1:08:31
to 2020 then you sign with Red Bull in
1:08:34
the offseason aside from the helmet what
1:08:37
I'd run into does it ring it's
1:08:41
ridiculous I mean all yeah sort of media
1:08:46
you support you get injured or some kind
1:08:50
of something like that is one thing that
1:08:52
those thought brand my teachers have the
1:08:56
craziest dream at night come up with
1:08:58
something insane everyone else would be
1:09:01
like what are you on about and as your
1:09:03
life yeah let's let's do it
1:09:05
say say one of these things where I'd be
1:09:09
quite come up with a kind of a solid
1:09:12
idea of pitch a couple little ones then
1:09:15
I'm kind of getting it going but yeah
1:09:18
just that really needs to come up with
1:09:19
something crazy and maybe how does the
1:09:23
budget and the kind of people that
1:09:25
really want to back is it's amazing
1:09:27
feeling so such a door and you know it's
1:09:30
insane so nice yeah yes
1:09:36
wow that's cool so obviously Racing's
1:09:41
postponed were there any specific goals
1:09:43
you've set for loosen up before we found
1:09:45
out we weren't going anything you want
1:09:47
to share with us that you have
1:09:50
definitely touched on this in the past
1:09:52
with other people as well but once
1:09:56
you've done done it once then you know
1:10:02
you can do it you stopped kind of the
1:10:06
whole peeking and dropping your season I
1:10:09
can't have rounds won't be like bro I
1:10:12
need to get top ten at this one I'd have
1:10:14
round two I'd be like right hit that win
1:10:17
so it's the sort of thing where you you
1:10:21
see some speed control for you as
1:10:23
especially if your energy and stuff like
1:10:25
that and it even goes down so on dross
1:10:28
how you treat you kind of eraser on so
1:10:31
if you're sort of in the past I've
1:10:34
definitely been kind of knowing they
1:10:38
saying sections and I have to take it
1:10:40
slightly easier than others so I can
1:10:42
manage the sprint finish jump after all
1:10:45
so taking easy through the woods for
1:10:48
William so you've got some lungs to
1:10:49
spring the bomb but now I've had those
1:10:53
extra a couple years and now I've had
1:10:54
that extra experience and also had a run
1:10:58
that was 100% from top to bottom and it
1:11:01
got me a wind just for me seems so much
1:11:06
less strain on my brain and to work out
1:11:08
which rounds I shouldn't give it 100%
1:11:12
mr. silly as that sounds but sometimes
1:11:15
especially for your for your overall in
1:11:17
the points you know you should kind of
1:11:20
structure it but just know now that
1:11:24
every race is going to be a hundred
1:11:26
percent every term every Rock every burn
1:11:29
sort of just just makes it quite a lot
1:11:32
easier to work out in your head if
1:11:34
you've got one thing to remember just go
1:11:38
for it I think it's going to be easier
1:11:39
than this big list of sort kind of
1:11:43
things to do so yeah I'm really looking
1:11:46
forward to just being able to give it
1:11:48
100%
1:11:49
all those I just makes it seem so simple
1:11:51
to me just getting the Stargate go as so
1:11:58
as how is you
1:12:04
so we've touched on how much testing
1:12:06
you've done this winters to get the new
1:12:07
bite ready a new frame twenty nine up
1:12:09
from six fifty be at the back in terms
1:12:13
of the bike and the testing and
1:12:15
everything were you ready to go racing
1:12:16
or has this delay giving you a little
1:12:18
bit of an advantage doing
1:12:20
yeah the bike got to a stage where I was
1:12:25
happy to race it on the last day of
1:12:31
offseason riding that I had planned
1:12:33
before going to loser so it was it was
1:12:36
really tight weird problems already with
1:12:40
the virus and the prototype frames we
1:12:42
had punt arriving because that factory's
1:12:46
got shut down before we did hear or see
1:12:48
so we we've kind of been battling with
1:12:50
this virus thing from I guess quite a
1:12:53
lot longer than then a lot of other
1:12:55
people are our side of the pond run also
1:12:57
yeah again the bikes in time was really
1:13:00
stressful and there
1:13:02
yeah a few things just took a while to
1:13:05
get going that it was was pretty cool
1:13:09
being able to work with with all the
1:13:11
boys they were so on it was ridiculous
1:13:14
were so switched on and kind of it
1:13:18
definitely wasn't for lack of trying so
1:13:20
it was it was hard but we managed to get
1:13:23
it dialed on on a CI I planned my whole
1:13:27
off season in October scheduled every
1:13:30
downhill riders gonna have and I was
1:13:34
happy on the very last times the field
1:13:37
season riding on schedule with an hour
1:13:40
of daylight left
1:13:43
yeah for me and one of those people that
1:13:47
if I'm confident feeling that cockiness
1:13:50
on the bike almost it's a funny word to
1:13:52
use this or how just up how much in part
1:13:57
of you heading to the new forum Laura
1:13:59
and what other kind of men benefits you
1:14:01
were trying to achieve with it because
1:14:02
the the previous version was pretty was
1:14:05
ahead of its time with the geometry yes
1:14:09
so I guess the main thing we decided and
1:14:13
moderated decided was there they wanted
1:14:16
it to be a little a little more
1:14:19
progressive in the bottom out and a
1:14:21
little more subtle and easy going off
1:14:24
the top so just getting that small bump
1:14:26
sensitivity really really kind of fluid
1:14:29
and progressive enough to say the big
1:14:32
hits and that was most of the they kind
1:14:37
of strategy behind it was it's a similar
1:14:40
looking bike it's similar looking lynxes
1:14:43
it's all quite similar but it's just
1:14:47
what this nude sort of thing going on it
1:14:50
looks badass when it's cool bit kick but
1:14:53
yeah just it's a slightly bit bigger
1:14:56
they wanted to go a little bit bigger on
1:14:58
the both sizes but yeah the kinematics
1:15:01
are slightly different and
1:15:04
yeah it's pretty cool feeling that sort
1:15:08
of first taps out run you doing about
1:15:11
leave kind of help develop from
1:15:13
scratches so no worrying at times that
1:15:15
you might not get to where you think the
1:15:18
boat should be raised or no matter that
1:15:20
go to production so it's weird it's not
1:15:23
all about you anymore you're definitely
1:15:24
worrying a little bit about what
1:15:27
feedback comes out you only mouth
1:15:29
because that bike will be on the shop
1:15:31
floor some day and we all thought if it
1:15:33
doesn't sell it'll say yes it was a it's
1:15:40
just difficult to get right things
1:15:43
project where were you testing on that
1:15:46
last day you know when you said you were
1:15:47
happy where was that in looser oh yeah I
1:15:49
was in testing I was like there you
1:15:53
light right with her yeah pretty much
1:15:56
you mentioned Fox you that you're on the
1:15:59
new 14 hands how are you getting on with
1:16:00
us
1:16:01
yeah good man I think that was that was
1:16:03
one of the real helps and getting this
1:16:07
new Biturbo know would scale some new
1:16:09
equipment which was probably slightly
1:16:10
more seeing it with her with what we
1:16:14
want Eden yeah the guys at fault pretty
1:16:16
much just only in in a matter of days
1:16:19
that was taking us weeks to do so it's
1:16:21
like yeah they after kind of mean like
1:16:29
in going down such a road in the
1:16:31
offseason having them kind of cast a bit
1:16:34
more knowledge on the new Fox stuffs got
1:16:37
sure offsets and that sort of stuff so
1:16:39
having them kind of custom knowledge on
1:16:42
what parts of the bike doing that can be
1:16:45
effective over than the actual
1:16:47
offset so having them help with balance
1:16:50
now allow and gain getting those last
1:16:53
few final touches was real cool is
1:16:55
they're crazy what those guys can do so
1:16:58
many ideas when the frame will be
1:16:59
available to the public the Nouman
1:17:01
director well they wanted to get out
1:17:04
before the end of this year I think they
1:17:06
at least wanted to have a boat that
1:17:08
could go to production but given all
1:17:11
this going on right now it's going to be
1:17:12
really hard of the next
1:17:16
development of one of the probe mics
1:17:18
hasn't arrived yet you to teach the
1:17:21
whole thing so I think but it's a hard
1:17:25
one
1:17:25
it's like the question of when are we
1:17:27
gonna go we're all I'm worried about now
1:17:33
is just sort of making sure I'm doing
1:17:39
the right things at home and I'm happy
1:17:40
with that bike I know it can race on
1:17:42
that so no yeah no yes whatever Oh
1:17:46
everyone's been working so hard to get
1:17:48
to the point that we're at and now that
1:17:50
we I mean to be forced to take a break I
1:17:52
think everyone's just grabbing a brush
1:17:54
forever fresh air yeah so I'm assuming
1:18:00
we do go racing this year what goals can
1:18:03
you share with us what's right I guess
1:18:15
outside of just simply race runs an
1:18:17
inducible media stuff really okay say
1:18:21
words a lot more kind of homo for making
1:18:24
that more professional and everything
1:18:26
way to organize so just starts to become
1:18:30
a bit more kind of on my game at home
1:18:34
really
1:18:35
Stein's here and against at home
1:18:38
professionalism thank you sir be good
1:18:41
nice just set every weekend and work on
1:18:44
my media and so rather than making a
1:18:48
goal that you're not in control of which
1:18:51
would be for example win the overall
1:18:53
because obviously there's other things
1:18:54
that you can't control what anyone else
1:18:57
does your goals more just something
1:18:59
you're in control of ride yeah then
1:19:02
every restroom
1:19:03
yeah I think so
1:19:07
if you're riding a hundred percent every
1:19:08
run you wanna win everyone say sir
1:19:11
yep give me this I guess it's the
1:19:13
different way of say you know yeah
1:19:19
there's no beating around the bush I
1:19:21
just want to I want to drop out the
1:19:23
Stargate go into the win every every
1:19:25
every weekend I feel like what I've done
1:19:29
over the offseason is the best I could
1:19:32
have done to try to achieve nice yeah
1:19:34
nice any venues that you don't like the
1:19:37
look of that are on the calendar
1:19:38
obviously we've lost courier and we've
1:19:41
lost for William but the rest ya know
1:19:44
the rest of them um I'm quite a big fan
1:19:47
of that yeah I'm really like the last
1:19:50
four races they kinda stack up real good
1:19:52
after the break you know you've got sort
1:19:55
of four really good track saying
1:19:57
erroneously now to be honest um I was
1:20:03
pretty stoked at how he's looking the
1:20:05
whole way through it but I think you've
1:20:06
got a lot of diversity
1:20:07
I wouldn't like every track to be like
1:20:10
motor solo like every track to be like
1:20:12
there's a say opening bit diversity
1:20:16
means the best man that's gonna win yeah
1:20:19
absolutely stayed for it it looks to us
1:20:22
like MS Monde recovers as a kind of
1:20:24
grace help at the World Cups how
1:20:25
important do you think that is yeah I
1:20:30
mean the race is deadly pretty pretty
1:20:34
essential I think some some teams go
1:20:37
beyond my teams got a pretty fancy
1:20:39
service car as a massive canopy and two
1:20:42
pots off to the side I've seen any to
1:20:44
murder yeah yeah yeah it is amazing
1:20:47
these records have with pre I think it
1:20:49
all comes to play when when the
1:20:52
weather's bad I think as long as you've
1:20:53
got a good enough setup that when the
1:20:57
weather gets really bad you can handle
1:20:58
it then then it's fine but notice it's
1:21:03
always cool being in a dome its place
1:21:05
but it's definitely not essential you
1:21:07
know you see you see how the syndicate
1:21:11
set of course when Josh was winning as
1:21:13
an athlete you know that they were doing
1:21:16
well I guess I think that they do know
1:21:19
how easy up Stella remember
1:21:22
so normal there's nothing crazy says you
1:21:26
kind of know you can do it smooth us out
1:21:28
but yeah it's cool kind of having that
1:21:32
cool space when my friends and family
1:21:34
come it's amazing to soar space where
1:21:37
everyone can get involved in there yes
1:21:41
it's pretty cool it's amazing making it
1:21:44
cool
1:21:44
well hopefully we'll all be back at the
1:21:46
rest is soon thanks ever so much for
1:21:48
taking the time to come on the show
1:21:50
tonight Laurie he's been fabulous
1:21:52
chatting to you and best a lot for 2020
1:21:54
and beyond
1:21:54
why 8023 now yeah 23 it's still
1:21:59
improving every year I think it's pretty
1:22:01
safe and so the future is looking pretty
1:22:03
bright for you yeah yeah I've got you
1:22:07
back for the win this year May so God
1:22:15
yeah we'll see ya
1:22:18
hopefully we get a few and at the end
1:22:20
yeah yeah cards gonna be hard to be
1:22:24
ready when it comes birthing care same
1:22:27
febrile State Fair cheese boys
1:22:29
well where's the best place for people
1:22:30
to keep track of your progress is it
1:22:31
Instagram yeah I guess Instagram of the
1:22:34
few weeks of fun planned kind of a bit
1:22:37
more structure to it because it's the
1:22:40
only thing that I can do to to maintain
1:22:42
my sort of presidents on this okay yeah
1:22:46
I guess we're gonna have to start doing
1:22:47
that's how me cuz I like I said at the
1:22:50
start like that the roadie deep voice
1:22:53
that song keen in there and live live a
1:22:56
life outside of rhodium when you're when
1:22:58
you're off the bike as well you know
1:23:00
I've definitely not been so many trucks
1:23:03
out millions of bits on social media but
1:23:05
I do really enjoy it mostly because I
1:23:08
don't have time to say yeah definitely
1:23:12
got a bit talking with my hands in the
1:23:13
state to do summer project to Red Bull
1:23:16
and several others as the yellow zone go
1:23:19
I think it's at Laurie Greenland
1:23:21
underscore yeah uh help Jack Giada
1:23:24
trying to mention you know same as what
1:23:28
I've said the last couple of podcasts
1:23:30
got me around there which is Geralyn was
1:23:33
going to be
1:23:34
then I've got the mountain-bike live
1:23:36
series on YouTube just chat read in I
1:23:38
think I'm gonna put out like like Laurie
1:23:41
said we've got to do something at the
1:23:42
moment so I'm gonna put out like
1:23:44
training at home kind of day in the life
1:23:47
video potentially next week yeah yeah
1:23:49
kind of falling through what I do want
