Fresh Goods Friday 704 - Jumping the Shark
May 10, 2024
Welcome to episode 704 of the Freshies, as nobody calls them. Benji is all waffled out, so you can have an opening rant from Hannah instead:
I have builders. I don’t mean I have builders in doing work on my house that is disruptive and messy and expensive but will ultimately end up benefitting me in the form of a nice new kitchen, or extra bathroom, or whatever. No. In fact, I have been doing epic amounts of solo DIY, which only serves to add insult to the injury of my current position. ‘I have builders’ should be read in the same sort of terms as ‘I have herpes’ or ‘I have nits’. These are neighbouring builders. On three sides, at one point this week. But the builders on one side in particular are of such disruptive disrespect that I would be reaching for the lawn sausages were it not for the fact that the reason for their presence is the large scale removal of all things green and replacing with patio. I have wondered if perhaps I could lay the patio myself, over the builders.
I have a builder/mountainbiker/friend coming soon to do some work that I cannot do. He could probably give up building and deliver builder education and etiquette programs. How Not To Disrespect Women – entry level skills. How Not To Make A Mess – advanced course. Appropriate Conversations For The Public Workplace – Intermediate Level. But I am tempted to get him to set his usual habits aside, in the name of revenge. With the lack of lawn, sausages aren’t an option, so what is the appropriate treatment for acres of hard surfacing?

Hello, welcome to Fresh Kids Friday 704
0:27
Yep, that's correct. I actually forgot and I looked over there and it said 703
0:32
because that's last week's maths. You weren't here. You were doing some, oh you were riding
0:37
bikes. I was out and about with Jo from Starling. Mm-hmm. Riding the new Mega Murmur. Mega Murmur
0:44
Which is big. How do you murmur megaly? Well, isn't it about murmuration? Isn't that a Starling
0:50
Is that the deal? Yeah. Is that the... And they are pretty mega. Yeah. I quite like the idea of murmuring regularly
0:57
We had the ASMR edition last week. I'm going to have some murmuring edition this week. I don't really know what that is
1:03
What's the difference between a murmur and a mumble? Uh, age. Kids mumble, adults murmur. I don't know
1:11
I don't know. I don't know. Right. Stuff. Yeah. Well, there's some big stuff behind us. The Cairn Brave, which is the back road adventure vehicle
1:26
Back road. Okay. Yeah. So I tested the earlier model of this that had drop bars on it. All right
1:34
And now I think you can get it with flat bars and drop bars. Right, good. Obviously, this is the flat bar version
1:40
Shimano EP6 cargo motor. I've never heard of a cargo motor because I don't pay attention to them
1:49
And it's two thousand three hundred and a little bit pounds. Right. Obviously fully rigid, but all the all the things for attaching things
2:02
So that's this is AdventX by MicroShift. Okay. Right. Yeah. Super functional kind of you could go to the shops or you could go bike packing kind of thing
2:16
Right. Yeah. Yay for external batteries. Why do you like external? I'm the only one who wants them. Who doesn't want an external battery
2:24
Well, the stats say most people because they can monitor. Most people can do one. They can monitor whether people are charging the bikes with the battery in or off
2:38
And they've been doing that and they realize that people aren't charging the batteries off the bikes. And so it's not to do with charging
2:45
I just think I just like to have that 500 everything weighed by a number. You could just buy a spare battery. Click clack. I want any bag
2:52
We will come full circle already in e-bikes and we will have 400 plus 400 piggyback batteries within two years
3:01
You heard it here first. Because that's just how people want to use them. I think people are all well and good
3:06
I've got an 800 watt hour bike. Well, good luck with that gate then. Well, it's open. It's the styles that are the problem
3:14
Oh, yeah. Whatever you're trying to get in. Well, you shouldn't be or whatever. And most of the time, you know, who's emptying 800 watt hour batteries every time they go out on a bike
3:25
Well, so the last time I had a brave, I went out on a massive mission of a ride. And to be fair, I didn't really use anything other than eco because one of the kind of downfalls of the Shimano system was that on drop bars, there wasn't a way to there wasn't a controller
3:47
You had to take your hands like bars to shift. Well, it was a stem. Yeah, it was like there wasn't it was like a flat bar one. So why wasn't it permanently on boost
4:00
Because then that's a bit much like on a technical trail on drop bars on a rigid gravel bike thing, blotting in boost up something tricky is a little bit out of control, a little bit hairy, particularly if you're clipped in
4:14
So I used it on eco but I couldn't, I couldn't empty it. Everything that was a problem there was not boost. Do you know this? Gravel, drop bars, clipped in. Remove those. No problem
4:25
So that's interesting. Yeah, so I had a massive ride like a full on ride until you're nearly bonking. Go to the pub and the cafe and eat all the food. Ride until you're bonking again
4:38
How far was it? Buy more food. I don't know, like all over Collerdale. I had to stop because my arse hurt. Well, it wasn't that the battery was empty. So right. Yeah, well, well, I don't know
4:50
I don't know, range all you want really, I suppose, didn't we? I did 38k on a 720 watt battery yesterday. Fully on boost. Yeah. One thousand twelve hundred and something metres
5:04
Well, I fully boosted all the way to work today. So, yeah, I'm not, I'm not anti boost. Most of the time I'm not using the full battery at all
5:13
So anyway, that's one of this week's arrivals. Do you want to go first with show and tell or shall I go first? I don't think we actually put these in. We pixelated them, didn't we
5:23
These are YT's. Is that right? Y and a T. Yeah. It's like Jimmy Cricket. Left and right. Okay. Mark will know that one. You've lost me
5:35
On his wellies. But they hilariously were wrong because he was from a certain place. Right. I don't know what these are called. They've got only a collab Vans YT. They're all right
5:49
For the kids. They are the kids. I have mountain bikes in them and I wouldn't particularly recommend it. Just not mega grippy. You're probably doing the wrong sort of mountain biking. You're probably not doing enough jibs
6:02
Correct. Yeah. And they have blisters on the inside of my ankles. You need to be doing like one footers. And that one where you do like a click your heels together over the handlebars. I don't know what that's called
6:16
You've seen that one? Heel clicker isn't it? I'm not being funny. Yeah, it probably is. Yeah. Anyway, it's not a knack knack. No. Right. Other than that. So, by all means you can buy them. They're very comfy. Very thick for things for walking around in
6:31
Mind you don't strain a muscle now because there's some beasts in this box. These are all from Hip Lock. Hip Lock. Yes. So I've had a bunch of... They didn't they start out being a belt? Well, this is a belt. That's a belt. This one's a belt. So I've got a Hip Lock belt that has a combination lock on it. Yeah
6:58
And it's a bit lighter. It doesn't have a salt secure rating. So it's just a kind of deterrent one. Yeah. But what we've got here are a bit more substantial. So this one is a silver salt secure. That's a bronze. Who does that? Is it an independent thing? Yeah. Right. Yeah. There's nothing I should know but I don't know
7:20
And then these ones are... Antique angle grinders. Oh right, OK. There's that one that's that big. Yeah. And that one that's that big. So they're pretty substantial. But this one is this one's meant for e-bikes and motorbikes. That's a DX1000. Yeah. This is a D1000. D1000. OK. So this one, you know, you wouldn't carry it around with you unless you're on your cargo bike or your motorbike and then you don't really care about the weight
7:48
But you do care about it. It's stolen. So, yeah, it's supposed to be angle grinder proof. I am not going to test that because what's the point in destroying it? There's already people on YouTube doing that sort of thing. And in fact, they've got little QR code thing so you can you can scan it and see somebody doing that. OK. So this one, although it's quite heavy, I suppose by the time you've put it around your waist, it's no worse than a backpack
8:16
It's got a key. You put it on and you go into town and lock your bike up
8:23
It is. Silver secure is pretty good for a portable lock. I had a folding lock. I've had those in the past. They're a bit more fitting your rucksack-able-ness
8:35
I think that looks like you can mount it on. You can on your bike
8:39
On bottle bosses and things. Yeah. Very interesting. Because sometimes you don't just ride from home and then go back home, do you
8:48
Not if I can help it. So. Question. Right. So I've brought something from home for show and tell
8:57
I'll just unlock my laptop. OK. You do that. So after all the coffee talk last week
9:03
Password one, two, nine. I thought I'd get into like enemas. Excuse me
9:09
Right. Keyword. Shark! We've got one of them at home. So I bought this. I bought myself a new Hoover with advice from the forum
9:18
As you do. And then I thought, oh, I'll get the car detailing kit because, you know
9:26
Yeah. I might need to clean the van. Yeah. It's like hoovering for elves
9:35
I don't think my massive van needs that level of detail. But it looks bigger on the Internet
9:44
So. And that's the second. Be careful of cleaning your car really well because you start
9:51
Well, if you're an idiot, you start to kind of pull up panels and stuff because you're wondering what they do
9:56
You've never seen them before. Does this come out? Is this cup holders? Bang. No, it's just a covering piece of plastic
10:02
I'll try not to do that. And what is this loose? Bang. Oh, no, it's just meant to be loose
10:07
That's on the rear view mirror. So I've had two instances of it look bigger on the Internet this week because I bought that
10:12
And I also bought a pump. What did I even go in there? Yeah, I bought a pump for an airbed thinking it would be like this size and it fits in the palm of your hand
10:22
I'm going to be there for hours on my next adventure. So anyway, I do have some bike, another bike thing
10:29
What warning lights are lit up on your van at the moment? None. It passed its MOT yesterday with no advisories
10:36
I haven't had that happen to a vehicle in living memory. I was very excited
10:42
I think mine's up. Hang on. What's that? This is a stem mount bundle set from KOM
10:52
Oh, it's cable tied in. KOM Cycling. OK, right. Yeah. So, oh, dear
10:58
Oh, thwarted by cable ties. Let's just rip the packaging. So it goes on your faceplate on your stem
11:06
Your bolts? Yeah. So you take two bolts out of your stem faceplate
11:13
Faceplate? And then you can have your... There's a bit of leeway
11:20
And it's got top and bottom fittings. And so you can put your Garmin and your Wahoo and your GoPro and whatever
11:26
So, you know, if you want to be filming at the same time as not getting lost, for example, you can put it all in one spot
11:33
Or you might have a light. Yeah. Oh, it's like Christmas on the table now
11:39
Right. We've got some questions this week. I believe so. I've got one from an email
11:46
Do you remember? Oh, this one was a bit quick. From Clifton Grant
11:52
Entitled Tomorrow's World. Here are some questions Id like to ask. One
12:00
What type of TV programme is this? Is this referring to this or to Tomorrow's World
12:05
The email subject was Tomorrow's World. So what type of programme was Tomorrow's World
12:11
Well, it was like the Kickstarter of the 90s. Was it the 80s
12:16
It was like the freak inventions before you had the means to..
12:22
Well, you don't get fools to subsidise your invention. You could remortgage your entire house and put everything into something that was never going to take off
12:33
That's question one. There's five. Two. What was the show's biggest audience in England
12:40
We don't know that one, do we? I don't know. It was back when there weren't that many channels
12:46
That's true. It probably had a peak audience of 20 million. Just before the snooker
12:52
How many TV actor members are there in this TV programme? I'd say there was three presenters at any time
12:57
No actors. They were all totally genuine. Well, that's what you think. Who plays the main part in this TV programme
13:03
Who do you associate Tomorrow's World with the most? I'm going with Maggie Philbin
13:08
No, there was a bloke. Two votes. There was a bloke that did it. I can't remember. I don't know people's names. I'm not very good at that
13:16
Did he go on and present elections as well? Am I getting confused? No, it probably would have been someone like that, yeah
13:22
Yeah. Hmm. Okay. I've never done that one. How old is this TV programme? Is it still going
13:29
No. I don't think so. I'd say it started in the 70s. I reckon the first one was black and white
13:35
Oh, white. Oh, white. Right, fine. Mark's saying it was black and white
13:40
So that's what, 1800s? I didn't get a black and white TV until some point in the 80s
13:46
You had colour ones before that. Oh, yeah. I mean, sorry. I didn't have a colour TV until some point in the 80s. Yeah
13:54
It was a long while. We all had a black and white, didn't we, Marie? Yeah, a long while
13:59
Peter Snow was the Tomorrow's World presenter. And then he went on to elections. There we go. I'm not mad
14:07
Well, not in this particular instance. More questions from other things. Not spammers
14:15
No, this is our YouTube guy, Ado Wilco. Our only YouTube follower. Hello
14:20
We could just come to your living room. Is there anyone who pipes up? Which is fine
14:25
At what weight point does an e-bike count as being an SL and not a full fat e-bike
14:32
20 kilograms. Is the new Fox speed suit a dungaree without the straps
14:39
I don't know how they work, actually. This is my specialist subject, dungarees. I don't know how that speed suit works
14:48
It's not one piece, that's all I know. It is not dungarees because dungarees don't have sleeves
14:55
Because then you're into jumpsuit territory. And that's a whole other world of fashion that I've not felt brave enough to enter into
15:03
Yeah, and don't call it a boiler suit. I don't mind it being a boiler suit
15:08
Some people do. I want overalls for doing DIYing. I've got more questions here
15:15
Good. From Ton. Ton, can we have a pensioners, retirees, tight arse FGF one week, please
15:25
No. What would that involve though? Boiler suites? So this is an e-bike, which some pensioners might be interested in
15:38
It's 2.5 grams? Yeah, that's relatively cheap for an e-bike. Relatively. Bus fares
15:47
You get free buses if you're a pensioner. I suppose. So the maths is like infinite bus fares there, isn't it
15:55
I'm going to get a pension. I won't get one. We've got to keep going, haven't we
16:01
Cool. What does that say? Is that Daviek? Who drinks the most coffee in the office
16:09
Mark. Who's happy with instant? I'm all right with that. Instant? I might have got to the point where I'd not be that happy with it
16:19
And Ross makes the best coffee. Made with unicorn tears. That's Mark
16:25
But Ross makes the best coffee, definitely. Zero Cool asks, how much did the Motera SL weigh in real life
16:33
I have not weighed it yet because that's the last thing I do full stop, actually
16:39
I usually do everything else and then go and weigh it. I would guess, with decent size and pegs on, it would be 21.3 kg
16:47
Right. Whatever. And the bottle cage. Which might tip it over into..
16:55
But it's full fat, isn't it? Full power. Kryton57, can you create some exposure to the changes and potential resurgence of grassroots MTB events
17:08
I don't know that there's a resurgence because the Midsummer Madness midweek cross-country series is on social media saying
17:17
they've only got 60 entrants and they need more than that or it won't be sustainable
17:22
So there's no resurgence there, anyway. I don't know. Well, actually, we've got an article on the future of events that's penciled in and we keep moving it along because nobody's actually written it yet
17:35
But it is penciled in because there's a whole world of stuff around events
17:40
Events are big money. In America, lots of people are making money out of events
17:47
But I feel like it's a slightly easier bag over there because the weather is a little bit more predictable
17:54
And here, the weather can make or break an event. And we've obviously had a number of events completely washed out, cancelled
18:02
Ard Rock's been really badly hit. So the future of events, climate change is a big part of that
18:09
And getting people to sign up in advance. We do watch the weather, don't we
18:15
It's a hard sell. Yeah, well, you've got all the stuff that you've got to set up like toilets and insurance and stuff that you've got to outlay up front
18:25
Security and bogs. Yeah, people don't want to buy a ticket until they can see the weather forecast and go, oh, yeah, we're not going to end up in a swamp
18:34
Right. I don't know. Don't know. Well, probably Chips is going to look into it, speak to some event organisers and write about that at some point in the future
18:47
What ya doing, sucker? That was the name of a person, not just a question
18:54
But then again, what are we all doing with our spare time since Wiggle and CIC have closed down
19:00
Are very much the same as I was beforehand. I've done epic amounts of DIY
19:05
A lot of people used to browse it, did they? Did they? I don't know. Why not
19:11
I think life's been vastly improved if that was an entertaining pastime. So where would people be browsing instead now
19:17
Single track world, of course. People want to look at products and think about what they might buy
19:22
Single track world, review section. I suppose, yeah. Go to TK Maxx, that's where I spend. That's the only thing I browse
19:31
Yeah, I do like a bit of a little wander around there and see what they've got. Online, the shoe section, because you know, it's just endless
19:37
Oh no. Keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going. Gazzaby1955, does that mean he's that old, do you think
19:48
Maybe. Could be. Don't know. Does that mean he's retired? When is the current heavy discounting of some bikes, especially e-bikes, likely to end
19:58
I don't need a new bike at the moment. I'm in 70th year. Good. Next year, and an e-bike will almost certainly be on my next bike
20:04
Will there still be these heavily discounted deals around if I wait until 2025
20:09
I think spring 2025 is going to be the last shift, I reckon
20:16
Because the stock that they've got sitting at the minute, they can't keep holding it back forever
20:22
It's going to have to go out there at some point, I reckon. It might depend a lot on the weather
20:27
If it is glorious weather from now through till the end of November, for example
20:35
people will buy more bikes and more bike parts because they'll ride more. Whereas if it is shit, like it's been for the last six months or eight months or whatever the hell it's been
20:47
then yeah, they'll be hanging around. I don't know what to advise on that regard
20:52
If you see a bike you like, just buy it. If it's a good deal, have joy now. Don't wait till you're 70 to have joy
20:58
Well, they might be waiting for a payout. Maybe. I don't know
21:05
What would I advise? I'd wait. You'd wait? I'd wait. I'd gauge it in November's sales as to what's happening
21:15
Chris Mack. Philosophy from Hannah and Benji. Chris Mack. Are we going to see some affordable accessories or some mountain bikes
21:25
It probably means affordable accessories or affordable mountain bikes. You can afford some of the things we feature in these things
21:32
It depends how much you get paid. There is that. It depends on your sense of scale
21:38
I don't know. We've just done Calibers. I would just say mountain bikes have always been sodding expensive
21:46
It was one of their things when they came out. God, these are well expensive. They've never been affordable
21:52
Total balls. It's a myth. Right, shall we go and clear up this big pile of goodies
22:00
I didn't bring the hoover. I can't just hoover them. I think I know what to do with these locks
22:05
I guess we'll probably all need one at home or something like that. Or you can augment downstairs
22:10
No, I have these earmarked for usages. Right, for locking up your shark
22:16
No, that's going to be available for all children in the house to deploy
22:21
Yeah, right. They'll love it. Okay, well that was fun. Hope you enjoyed it
22:29
Keep the questions coming in. Please, why not join Adrian on YouTube? He's lonely
22:35
Look how many emojis he's using. That's a cry for help. That's what I do
22:41
Alright then. I'll look out for that. Emojis are a cry for help
22:48
I like that
