DJI Mavic Air 2 flies longer, shoots better video and costs less!

by 0

DJI’s Mavic Air 2 drone was officially revealed last night with a lower £769 RRP, longer flight time and improved 48-megapixel camera.

DJI has made a massive update to the popular Mavic Air drone that was launched back in 2018, with the announcement of the Mavic Air 2. The new drone still features that recognisable folding drone design but is now even easier to fly and has been updated for improved user experience.

The headline feature is that the new DJI Mavic Air 2 can now stay airborne for 34 minutes, giving this middle of the range drone the longest flight time of all DJI models. DJI says updates to the electronic speed controls and a new battery are the reason for this bump in run time. The increased flight does come with a slight weight penalty and the new Mavic Air 2 weighs 100g more than the outgoing 470g drone.

Further specification boosts can be seen in the new 48-megapixel camera. The new 1/2in Quad Bayer sensor shoots photos at 12 megapixels but will shoot 4K video at up to 120mbps. Furthermore, the Mavic Air 2 will shoot HDR photos and has a new 8K Hyperlapse Mode.

Ensuring super smooth video is a 3 axis gimbal, but on top of that, there is also electronic image stabilisation to ensure that there is no wobble when you’re shooting your next riding epic.

For mountain bikers wanting to shoot some solo video, the Mavic Air 2 has an updated version of FocusTrack, this includes tracking features Spotlight 2.0, Activetrack 3.0 and Point of Interest 3.0. ActiveTrack 3.0 is the follow mode and you won’t need to worry about the little drone hitting a tree while in flight thanks to a built-in APAS 3.0 Obstacle Avoidance system.

DJI also updated the controller design.

DJI has also introduced further safety features including something called ADS-B, a feature that tells the drone if something else is flying nearby and to avoid it.

Even with all those safety features though, you will still need to follow local drone guidelines set out by the government which usually require you to register any drone weighing more than 250g.

DJI has the Mavic Air 2 up on it’s UK website with a starting price of £769 which will get you the drone, remote, battery charger, low noise propellers and few accessories. For drone pilots wanting even more flight time then the Mavic Air 2 Fly More Combo costs £949 and comes with additional battery packs.

Looks half decent. Wish they would modify the app to be able to reduce sharpening in image.

Same with the Mini – too much sharpening looks terrible.

With my P4P+ and Inspire 2 – full control of the image in the app. Shouldn’t be that hard to add.

Nb the ADS-B “AirSense” version is not available in Europe / UK until at least a lot later in the year.
