Podcast: Making Up The Numbers - MTB Training with Richie Rude and Todd Schumlick
Feb 5, 2021
Todd Schumlick has trained some of the world’s leading bike sports athletes from Aaron Gwin to Stevie Smith, Sam Blenkinsop to Emmeline Ragot. Richie Rude is the 2 x EWS Champion, 2013 Junior DH World Champion & has worked with Todd for the last 8 years. What started out as a discussion about training for DH vs enduro actually became more about training in general but there’s so much wisdom in here that it doesn’t really matter.

0:42
hello everyone and welcome to episode
0:44
two of season three of the podcast
0:46
two episodes down and we're still in
0:48
january we've got a lot that we want to
0:50
get done this year so we're cracking on
0:52
jack valley and jamie edmondson on a new
0:55
team the rockshox trek
0:56
factory race team sorry no i got that
0:58
wrong haven't i
0:59
jack valley and jv edmondson on a new
1:02
team the rockshox trek race team
1:04
we didn't see that one coming did we oh
1:06
we didn't but i mean we didn't really
1:08
know where
1:09
jamie was going to go did we so it's no
1:10
surprise to see him on kind of a new
1:12
team
1:13
and that's a really good fit for valley
1:14
so yeah it's gonna be exciting to see
1:16
how that team rolls out this year
1:18
and just seeing tonight andrea's club on
1:21
atherton racing
1:22
yeah big surprise yeah whether that's a
1:25
marketing strategy to get into europe
1:27
with the athens and bikes frames who
1:28
knows but
1:29
i mean as we've just looked he was 21st
1:31
in the world cup overall so
1:33
certainly deserves a ride so it's good
1:34
to see him get on there with the
1:36
athertons
1:37
cool so after the wild speculation of
1:39
the hashtag team rumor show
1:41
we're back with something a little bit
1:42
more factual this time and we're talking
1:44
about the differences between training
1:46
for downhill
1:47
and training for enduro and joining us
1:49
for the discussion
1:50
we're welcoming back to the show one of
1:51
the leading motocross downhill and
1:53
enduro
1:54
trainers on the planet he's also the
1:56
intense factory racing team manager
1:58
but tonight he's wearing his performax
2:00
hat so let's say hello again to todd
2:02
shulman
2:03
hey todd how's it going oh god yourself
2:07
uh great yeah awesome todd it's
2:10
great to have you back with us how are
2:12
you doing after the the health scare you
2:13
had in 2020 you fully recovered talk us
2:15
through where you're at
2:17
uh well yeah i don't know what fully
2:20
recovered is but it's an
2:21
ongoing uh medical tests um
2:24
you know medical tests trying to figure
2:26
out the two things that are happening
2:27
like
2:28
for those who don't know but uh heart
2:30
attack um
2:31
i'm 52 years of age and i call myself
2:34
relatively fit i guess
2:36
and uh not a real lot of um history of
2:39
it in our family so
2:40
it was a little surprising i'm actually
2:42
glad you bring this up because i i
2:43
really think that this is something i
2:45
want to talk more about
2:46
uh through this was a big discovery for
2:48
me and learning
2:50
more outside of the you know fitness
2:51
world and i'm always thinking that
2:53
wellness is the foundation to fitness
2:55
um and this really emphasized that
2:59
and my my situation with my heart attack
3:02
was i first of all encountered and goes
3:04
back to a lot of mountain bike
3:05
um i had four or five years ago five
3:08
years ago i was
3:09
i was on my way to actually see richie
3:12
and uh on my way to crank works so again
3:14
mountain bike
3:15
surrounding me um you know and i landed
3:18
in auckland
3:19
after a trip to fiji and we know about
3:22
all the blood clotting
3:23
stuff we hear about when you're in a
3:25
plane for a long time at high altitude
3:27
um anyways landon auckland had a stroke
3:31
um was diagnosed as a stroke and uh uh
3:34
was released
3:35
with uh that it was uh misdiagnosed and
3:38
it wasn't a stroke because i just
3:39
recovered within six hours and they said
3:41
but all the symptoms
3:42
uh fast forward to uh you know uh
3:46
six uh eight months ago and i was out
3:48
riding my mountain bike
3:50
and uh yeah i thought i had heartburn um
3:53
you know reap acid reflux and uh really
3:56
burning in the center of my chest
3:57
uh finished the ride um
4:02
you know relentlessly i guess you could
4:04
say spent the next
4:05
four or five days being very active
4:07
motocross weekend
4:08
actually communicated with the doctor
4:10
the next day um
4:12
said to me to come in c for testing five
4:14
days later got the test
4:15
you know trying to keep the story short
4:17
basically was uh did blood tests and
4:20
uh ekg and was told i had a heart attack
4:23
um
4:24
you know and real crazy and at that
4:26
weekend i spent it with couscous uh
4:28
fabian cuizzini we were out riding moto
4:30
and mountain biking and
4:31
it was one of the most active i have to
4:33
honestly say four or five days i
4:35
followed
4:36
um thinking that i was just going in for
4:38
some acid reflux medicine for my
4:40
heartburn
4:41
but after all that um we are here now
4:45
which is
4:45
uh we're trying to figure out why um
4:48
blood clotting
4:50
and there's two things happening i have
4:52
a hole in my heart and this is where it
4:53
gets interesting i hope for the
4:55
um i hope this is something that those
4:58
listening
4:59
can really take seriously and understand
5:02
and
5:02
i hate to be the the guinea pig often
5:05
but i guess i am with my injuries and
5:07
staying active as an athlete but um
5:11
i got a hole in my heart and i guess
5:12
that's a not a rare thing there's
5:14
uh i've heard all kinds of numbers but
5:16
it's probably around 10 to 15 percent of
5:18
the population have a hole in their
5:20
heart
5:21
um that's not a problem and most won't
5:24
get that heart patched
5:25
through a process or a surgical
5:29
procedure because it's uh it's
5:31
relatively
5:32
um harmless in a sense
5:35
um but i've also got blood clotting
5:38
so the blood is you know uh not
5:41
coagulating so
5:42
um that is more uh curious to the
5:46
medical people and this is again where i
5:49
try and
5:50
this is where it's i think interesting
5:52
for those or it should be
5:54
we're trying to figure out this as past
5:56
injuries and
5:57
when you get when every time you hit
5:59
your pedal on your shin i'm just finding
6:01
i found out a lot more about this when i
6:02
really met
6:03
with professionals and
6:06
you know every time we smash our pedal
6:08
or we hit the ground and you know it was
6:10
kind of
6:10
it's been a while because you know all
6:12
of us i hope not think that we're not
6:14
reckless or we're daredevils
6:16
you know with this lifestyle but you
6:19
know when the when the specialist i met
6:20
with acme about it
6:22
if i'd ever hurt myself you know it's
6:25
kind of like you sound like you're
6:26
bragging in your
6:27
was this a deaf question yeah yeah it's
6:29
like oh god you almost giggle and then
6:30
you sound like it
6:32
you sound like an idiot or something
6:33
when you start describing like
6:35
you know well how many times in the last
6:36
week do you mean um
6:38
you know and and and like you know they
6:40
asked me if i had surgery and i said
6:41
well
6:42
11 times and that's at my 52 years of
6:45
age and motocross background and bmx and
6:47
everything
6:48
else and i don't wear those as a badge
6:49
of honor and by any means but
6:52
we discovered that all these have a
6:53
consequence and um
6:55
you know now that's not saying my
6:57
injuries produce these blood clots and
6:59
that's what we're trying to find out
7:01
but was it uh related to that or is it a
7:04
blood disorder that's not in my family
7:07
history or tree um and then i'm managing
7:10
that right now with blood thinners
7:12
so i'd like to say you know get your
7:15
if anybody out there i can't even tell
7:17
you how many people have reached out to
7:19
me
7:19
um anywhere of age and said you know all
7:22
the things you talked about
7:23
um in one ear um
7:27
you know instagram or something or
7:28
social or on facebook
7:30
when it first happened and i kind of
7:32
followed up that you know these are some
7:34
of the same symptoms that i had
7:35
but i never seen the doctor and i'm
7:38
really scared i don't want to find out
7:39
what
7:40
could be and all these things and i
7:42
think that's really
7:43
not a that's not a good thing i think
7:45
you need to go and you have to trust the
7:47
medical system and
7:48
uh do this yeah i couldn't agree more
7:50
i've never understood the concept of
7:52
if there's something wrong you don't
7:54
want to know about it
7:56
if it's wrong it's wrong and well yeah
7:58
you find it out about it
8:00
isn't going to change whether it's wrong
8:01
or not it just means that people who are
8:03
professionally trained to help but
8:06
yeah you're right jack and you know but
8:08
the phobia
8:10
it's always we always wonder why we us
8:13
us human beings are so complex and we
8:15
have these phobias but
8:16
you know it's it's that and i really
8:19
i'm okay with it like i've spent enough
8:21
time at the hospital and
8:23
for me it was just like not even a
8:24
question you go see your doctor but
8:26
um i think the big thing i've learned
8:28
secondary to that is
8:30
blood thinners so i got on blood
8:31
thinners at a high dosage
8:33
and and this is a background my doctor
8:36
is a ride's a ride's enduro like
8:40
you know like lives and breathes it
8:43
endure
8:43
a mountain bike races it and he's 50 and
8:47
he
8:47
also big wave surfs in mexico so you can
8:50
imagine my
8:50
my um my doctor not the most
8:52
conservative type
8:54
and when i asked him on these blood
8:56
thinners when i first started
8:57
like what can i do like how how do i
9:00
manage my riding
9:02
and he's like well first of all you're
9:04
not riding you're going to play guitar
9:05
for the next little while
9:06
and basically he was like i don't want
9:09
you doing anything because not just the
9:11
risk of a laceration or a cut
9:13
but if i hit my head and uh that you
9:16
know hemorrhaging
9:16
yeah and so bleeding out right and you
9:19
you can't put that on other people as
9:20
well when you're riding so
9:22
wow what a psychological and i took a
9:24
little time off
9:25
and then as they lowered the dosage it
9:28
was sort of
9:29
i you know i took the advice but i also
9:32
managed it on my own and i realized when
9:34
i tried to go back and be safe
9:36
it was the worst writing of my life like
9:37
i was literally almost falling
9:39
everywhere
9:40
and i think then the first day after was
9:42
a great example i went out my
9:43
you know i fell off a bridge because a
9:46
bear jumped out at me i'm
9:47
shorting all these stories for your sake
9:49
a minute this is true the very day after
9:51
richie will tell you about this um he
9:53
wasn't here but there's enough people
9:54
that witnessed it
9:55
and i also you know put a hole almost
9:57
through my finger an hour later taking a
10:00
license plate off a car and i was i
10:03
caught
10:03
my caused myself more havoc by just
10:05
sitting around home so i was just
10:06
made a decision that was going to start
10:08
you know it wasn't
10:10
exercising wasn't going to be damaging
10:12
it was just the risk of
10:13
injury yeah and so i get people coming
10:16
up to me so that question is like how
10:17
are you doing
10:18
you know i'm i'm always doing the same
10:20
as i did prior to this
10:22
it was jus it's just been managing um
10:26
managing uh staying active or taking
10:29
risk
10:29
and that's a whole other episode but
10:31
it's yeah well it's good to hear that
10:33
you're back out doing stuff and
10:35
good things good luck with it but
10:38
who better to join todd to talk about
10:40
this subject matter than a writer who's
10:42
been at the sharp end of both
10:43
disciplines the 2013 junior men's
10:46
downhill world champion
10:47
and the first man to win back-to-back
10:49
enduro world series titles
10:51
yeti and fox's richie roode welcome to
10:53
the show richie
10:54
thank you guys thanks for having me our
10:57
pleasure
10:57
yeah great to have you on whereabouts in
10:59
the world are you richie at the moment
11:01
uh i'm home in uh connecticut so east
11:03
coast
11:04
yeah nice enjoying the cold weather i
11:07
guess
11:08
yeah for sure and then you're able to
11:09
get much gym training at the moment much
11:11
bike training what's the situation at
11:13
home
11:14
yeah that's pretty much all it's been
11:15
it's been in the gym and then been on
11:16
the bike
11:17
as much as i can really nice keeping
11:19
busy then
11:20
yeah try and do good cool so before we
11:24
get into the actual kind of day-to-day
11:25
training side i thought we could maybe
11:27
go
11:27
go back a step todd there's a stat i
11:30
read somewhere that
11:31
if you're an american who's over seven
11:33
foot tall and between the ages of 20 and
11:35
40
11:36
there's a 17 chance you'll play in the
11:38
nba i'm not that validated anywhere it's
11:40
just something i read but when he was
11:42
winning the tour de france miguel
11:44
lindering famously he had a resting
11:46
heart rate of 28.
11:48
is there any element of that for enduro
11:50
or downhill
11:52
or are we all starting on the 11 level
11:54
playing field or are the specific
11:56
body types you think that are kind of
11:57
better suited to each discipline
12:00
yeah man this has been something i've
12:03
just you know i guess you could say that
12:06
has always
12:07
intrigued me in looking at i love this
12:09
stuff it's
12:10
you know something i'll look at in the
12:12
side but i think there could be
12:14
but various writers you know how they
12:16
have proven this
12:17
uh this might not be this you know this
12:20
might not come into effect with enduro
12:21
and dh
12:23
uh greg minar versus uh troy brosnan ndh
12:27
uh both successful um obviously
12:29
different
12:30
you know um size and and uh
12:33
you know reach and height um
12:36
as well as uh richie uh you know
12:40
mr rudray here versus say uh jesse
12:42
malami
12:43
um relatively small dude um not richie
12:50
and you know all you know and all
12:53
relative to
12:54
height and mass or you could say uh
12:57
leverage and reach
12:58
um you know we've seen success from all
13:02
of them so
13:03
you know i guess you could argue with
13:06
the nba statement you know you could
13:07
argue that
13:08
the ball size and the hoop height are
13:10
all the same for all the athletes
13:12
yeah so maybe there's an advantage for
13:14
the taller players
13:16
yeah um you know so obviously that's
13:18
more
13:19
you know obvious uh regarding road
13:21
cycling
13:22
i guess you could argue that the motor
13:24
uh you know power of
13:26
respiratory and and legs um
13:29
have a higher degree of demand than say
13:32
enduro or dh mtb
13:36
which you could say also i think most
13:38
would agree have a higher degree of
13:40
skill
13:40
and risk taking versus the motor
13:43
um i guess you could then say that that
13:47
place is xc
13:48
mountain biking somewhere in between you
13:51
know where there's the
13:52
the motor and there's the
13:55
um you know there's a risk-taking skill
13:57
development
13:59
and i think there's still a bit of a you
14:02
know
14:02
i think there's still a bit of a sweet
14:04
spot that that
14:06
you know that's probably on
14:09
average uh the most successful you could
14:13
say
14:13
in the downhill enduro world like
14:16
example um
14:17
stevie smith uh look at aaron gwynne
14:20
lloyd bruni
14:22
uh jack reading you know
14:25
all you know all the same right kind of
14:28
so uh you know but we can also
14:32
uh choose like with our our sport we can
14:34
choose the size of our bike and
14:35
components
14:36
so you know we can change we can we can
14:38
change up
14:39
crank length bar width lever reach
14:43
spurring rates to compensate for weight
14:45
so again i think this helps balance out
14:47
the
14:48
advantages or disadvantages that we
14:49
would have
14:51
with leverage and
14:54
i would always argue it's not as much
14:56
body type as it is preparing
14:58
your particular body type to perform at
15:02
its best
15:03
physical and psychological which is
15:06
the part that's i think misunderstood
15:08
which uh in turn
15:10
enables i think athletes to maximize
15:12
their um
15:14
their skill that they would get from
15:16
their own practice
15:17
or coaching and their risk taking which
15:21
some may call courage or yeah
15:24
i think there's there's another element
15:26
as well when we had matt walker on the
15:28
show a few weeks ago
15:29
he said something about our brains
15:33
he wasn't talking about me he was
15:34
talking about him and jack our brains
15:36
process this [ __ ] faster than anybody
15:38
else basically
15:40
and i think there's that in there as
15:41
well i i i struggle
15:43
memorizing tracks i have a really really
15:46
poor short-term memory
15:48
and i think that's a massive
15:50
disadvantage because obviously if you
15:51
know exactly where you're going you can
15:52
go a lot faster
15:54
than if you don't and i wonder if that's
15:56
genetic or if it's practice because if
15:58
you ever do it with these guys
16:00
like the other two on this show right
16:03
now
16:04
george it's nuts i have no idea how
16:06
these guys do it i totally agree with
16:09
him like
16:09
i swear richie in the past he'd be
16:11
walking down he would answer
16:13
he'd have 40 people on the go on his
16:15
text messages
16:17
back in the day richie no more i know
16:19
that but
16:20
i would get to the bottom and he'd be
16:22
like i remember him in blinky walking
16:24
down
16:24
argentina never forget it i swear to you
16:27
i thought he didn't pay one attention
16:29
blinky was like hey uh i'm not going to
16:32
try and do my best kiwi accent but he's
16:34
like
16:34
he's like richie remember that fifth
16:36
corner or that rock on the inside and
16:38
she's like yeah was that brown one like
16:40
you know something and
16:42
i was like you know like how do you
16:44
remember that like i don't remember even
16:47
where we started like in in and out i
16:50
totally agree that's a good one
16:51
i'd say there's two important things
16:53
with that one
16:55
is your practice like
16:58
i didn't start racing properly until i
16:59
was like 19 20.
17:01
and i remember back then remembering
17:04
tracks was difficult
17:05
and like i was lucky if
17:08
in my first couple of seasons if i could
17:10
remember
17:11
to visualize an entire track whereas now
17:14
i could visualize
17:16
my exact race run from loser which was
17:18
two and a half months ago
17:19
every breaking point every pedal stroke
17:21
but that's just
17:22
10 11 years of practice doing that and
17:25
then the other one
17:26
is riders like richie who started racing
17:28
when they were like
17:30
15 and by racing i mean racing world
17:33
level racing at that age
17:35
they were so young when they started
17:36
performing that skill
17:38
that the brain will you know get good at
17:40
it much quicker than
17:42
like you said george how old were you
17:43
when you started trying to remember
17:44
tracks yeah 40.
17:46
yes exactly so yeah for me i'd say
17:49
there's those two george sorry todd i
17:51
wanted to ask you something um
17:53
you said about um riders and their
17:56
different
17:56
strengths and weaknesses um and being
17:59
able to kind of
18:00
you know all riders can work to make the
18:03
best of themselves would you say it's
18:05
more important for a rider to say right
18:07
this is what i'm good at and i'm going
18:10
to work that strength or would you say
18:12
it's
18:12
the opposite it's really important for
18:14
the riders to go right well hang on
18:16
based on my body type this is what i
18:18
will struggle more with i really need to
18:20
really work on that to bring that
18:22
up or are you going to say it's both
18:26
both yeah like it's you know like man
18:28
you you get
18:29
you give me that answer and i'm i'm i'm
18:31
gonna buy that you know
18:34
i i i swear this is the stuff that keeps
18:37
me up at night too it's like do you
18:38
focus on your weaknesses or do you
18:40
enhance your strengths
18:42
um you know goes back to something
18:43
really simple when i started with richie
18:46
this is like our eighth year together
18:48
i'll never forget i like you know i was
18:50
working with stevie smith
18:52
and you know and i saw you know
18:56
i think some of the guys were paying
18:57
attention hopefully this is not a build
18:59
up for me and perform x but
19:00
you know i came along in the scene and i
19:02
was from motorcross and i went into the
19:04
mountain bike and i always say this to
19:05
people straight up like
19:07
put us to the test if we're talking [ __ ]
19:10
or if we're we're telling ourselves
19:12
where this or that then
19:14
call anybody out i don't care we do that
19:16
in all ways right we do that with bikes
19:17
we do that with tires we
19:19
we test and i i i always said this and
19:22
you know i might have just latched on to
19:24
a really good writer like stevie smith
19:26
and had success and that's the only
19:27
reason
19:28
that i was a good salesman and i got him
19:30
on but the reality was
19:32
with stevie i always remember that we
19:34
had this progress
19:35
and i was just learning and we were
19:37
taken from motocross and trying to
19:38
figure out his body type and
19:40
exactly what you're saying jack like i
19:42
was like okay
19:43
stevie is um you know he's really good
19:46
at this and he's weak if that's
19:48
we push that or more is it
19:49
psychologically better for him to keep
19:50
pushing
19:51
like this or that and i i i'd say that
19:54
i've zigged and zagged through this my
19:56
whole career but i remember back to
19:57
richie richie started me i'll never
19:59
forget it we were in um
20:00
we were in leo gang austria and he just
20:02
approached me
20:03
and he's like uh you know i think he
20:05
said three words in the three where
20:08
i hire you and then um you know it's
20:11
like
20:11
sorry richard i'm gonna toss you once in
20:13
a while under the bus but
20:16
you know and then i you know i think
20:19
like as much as it's you know i could be
20:22
the opposite
20:22
say too much and he says too little but
20:25
um
20:26
richie isn't he's a sharp dude man
20:29
and i i think from talking to damian his
20:31
manager because i talked to damian i was
20:33
like hey man should i i knew damian a
20:35
bit and i was like hey do you think i
20:36
could help this kid out and he's like
20:38
yeah
20:39
i kind of seen the way you work with
20:41
with uh stevie and i'm like
20:43
okay so here i go i'm like okay enduro
20:46
dude now he's going enduro because i
20:47
already
20:48
kind of knew this damian was telling me
20:50
and then
20:51
i remember like i don't remember what it
20:52
was it was like a few months later and i
20:54
ran into sven martin and sven was like
20:57
he's like i seen something like because
20:59
i wasn't on instagram or anything but he
21:01
i remember he's talking to me or
21:03
somebody he was saying something and he
21:04
was like
21:05
he's like wink wink you guys don't go to
21:07
the gym do you like richie doesn't need
21:08
to go to the gym
21:09
i'll never forget it like he's telling
21:11
me this he's like and i was almost
21:12
thinking holy [ __ ] i go to the gym a lot
21:14
with richie
21:15
maybe he's got it right maybe i'm wrong
21:17
like i was like
21:18
i was like uh yeah i go to the gym and i
21:20
was like looking at rich i was looking
21:22
at
21:22
sven's face to see whether he was going
21:24
to call me an idiot or you know and i
21:26
was like and he's like oh okay and he
21:27
knows like sven style he just turns
21:29
around 180 and runs the other way
21:31
and you know gorilla and the miss are
21:33
the thing and then
21:34
i was like holy maybe i was questioning
21:36
like does richie need to go to the gym
21:38
so i kind of thought about that as we
21:41
went along and it's like i've discovered
21:43
something
21:44
and you know um it's uh
21:47
we work with richie's strengths we
21:49
definitely work on that
21:50
power that he's been blessed with it's
21:52
not it's not my
21:54
training it's not mom and dad it's not
21:55
steroids um
21:57
sorry all you uh people love to point
22:00
fingers at steroids i just love it it's
22:02
just
22:03
get me on that conversation i'll i'll
22:06
eat you freaking alive but
22:07
anyway no there's nothing else i'm that
22:10
confident in but
22:11
that's a good one and um
22:14
anyways back to you know with richie and
22:16
it was like we realized that
22:17
there are parts with richie's training
22:19
like his mobility is really naturally
22:21
really good
22:22
um and it's like he'll tell you year to
22:25
year it's a moving target
22:26
like we we we keep trying to
22:29
you know work down wit the path and you
22:32
know and
22:33
find the cracks and when we find the
22:34
cracks we sort of target them
22:36
and things start really general in the
22:38
beginning
22:39
and i just sort of follow the protocol
22:41
that i do with everybody
22:42
and then i think with time years you
22:45
start to realize
22:46
his his and his first phase of training
22:49
is
22:50
so much different now than it was six
22:52
months ago
22:53
and not just through the process of uh
22:56
me
22:56
learning there's that one thing i'm
22:58
still learning over here but
22:59
also richie's learning and then we also
23:02
are richie's developing
23:04
so they're kind of you're juggling those
23:06
three things so
23:07
well that brings me nicely into what i
23:09
was just about to ask you richie
23:10
um i'd i'd say you're probably a
23:13
different kind of build to the
23:15
typical enduro racer that we see on the
23:18
ews circuit
23:19
do you feel like your physique and your
23:21
strength gives you an advantage when you
23:23
get on the bike and go racing
23:26
i feel like just how enduro sometimes is
23:28
like pretty
23:29
downhill style like
23:32
having a bit of kind of mass and like
23:35
strength kind of helps because
23:36
i don't know like over weekend you get
23:38
beat up pretty good just from
23:40
like the amount of riding you can do
23:42
yeah so unlike that
23:43
end i think it's good just you know you
23:45
can
23:46
like handle yourself through the weekend
23:48
and whatnot
23:50
and just like obviously enduro can be a
23:52
lot about just carrying speed
23:54
and um i know when my teammates follow
23:57
me like
23:58
um you know some of the kids and they're
24:00
a fair bit lighter like casper i can
24:02
just roll away from them
24:03
oh you know like a good decline and you
24:06
know he's
24:06
pedaling keep up so yeah good there and
24:09
um
24:11
yeah i think like one of the things i
24:13
think i've had to work on
24:14
throughout like my enduro career is just
24:17
like being heavier
24:19
you know you have to carry that mask
24:20
around all day up the hills
24:22
so like trying to build that base to
24:25
kind of push myself around
24:27
um yeah it can be quite hard but i think
24:30
just um like i've
24:32
always been you know heavier yeah so
24:35
like i know how to
24:37
you know handle my body really like that
24:39
kind of
24:40
you know strength and power has always
24:43
been there so
24:44
like yeah it's not like you know one day
24:47
you have like a 20 pound you know in
24:50
your backpack
24:51
yeah so it's like i don't know i can
24:53
handle myself and
24:54
yeah i grew up like um kind of rotting
24:57
tight trails so
24:58
you know being a bigger dude i actually
25:00
can you know twist through tight trees
25:02
and stuff pretty well so i think that's
25:04
yeah
25:04
kind of nice is that something you guys
25:07
address
25:08
quite heavily in the winter making sure
25:11
that your
25:12
your engine or whatever we want to call
25:14
it is like
25:16
really good so that you don't get tired
25:19
as you said carrying yourself around on
25:21
a long ews weekend
25:23
yeah but i mean i think it's a good time
25:25
to try and be on the bike a bit more and
25:27
you know when you have to worry about so
25:29
much about like
25:30
i guess being the bike and like getting
25:32
that skill and you can it's on the road
25:34
bike a bit
25:35
yeah when the weather is nice um but
25:38
i think also nothing beats like going
25:40
through like a race
25:42
weekend and getting that kind of um
25:45
kind of training from there if it's like
25:47
a you know sure
25:48
not ews but like a b race per se
25:51
yeah for sure just just for for us and i
25:53
guess for the listeners richie are you
25:55
happy to tell
25:56
us yours how tall are you and how much
25:58
do you weigh like roughly
25:59
because i don't want to guess i'm 5 11.
26:03
yeah about 200 205 pounds yeah okay
26:07
93 kilo or something yeah okay
26:10
would you have you always been athletic
26:12
like when you were younger at school and
26:13
stuff
26:14
when did you start riding yeah i mean i
26:16
always like rode bikes from when i was
26:18
little
26:18
and then um i did track a bit
26:21
during school and yeah i played sports
26:24
like football and
26:25
yeah stuff like that so i've always been
26:27
active yeah
26:28
okay so you turned pro at 15 is that
26:31
correct
26:32
did you have to ah i think so i was just
26:34
um
26:36
a month ago i was looking at when i got
26:37
my first uh
26:39
pro license and i think it was 15 or
26:42
nothing so
26:43
obviously you then graduated from high
26:45
school while racing all over the globe
26:47
did you find it difficult
26:49
doing the racing and your education or
26:52
did you kind of
26:53
do the minimum required at school just
26:55
to get through how did you play that one
26:57
yeah i mean to like beginning of high
27:00
school i was
27:01
kind of balancing both pretty well i
27:03
wasn't traveling as much but then
27:05
the last two years i was traveling a bit
27:07
more and obviously i
27:09
enjoyed riding bikes way more than doing
27:10
school work yeah
27:13
yeah i kind of just did what i could to
27:14
get by and
27:16
i just really wanted to focus on on
27:18
riding really yeah well it certainly
27:20
worked so
27:21
yeah living the dream todd when you're
27:23
designing a training program
27:25
what are you training for would i be
27:28
writing kind of thinking that for
27:29
downhill you're looking for explosive
27:31
power
27:32
enduro a mix of power and power and as
27:35
rich you said before
27:36
stamina to get to get you around the
27:37
whole loop the whole weekend
27:40
well yeah like i think we're you know
27:43
we're raising those questions in this
27:45
conversation conversation so far like
27:47
you're
27:48
listening to richie and somebody we're
27:50
going whoa 205 pounds
27:52
guys i mean and and you hear the word
27:55
right it's we get stuck with these words
27:56
like
27:57
when i i don't know what you guys think
27:59
but when i hear when i first heard
28:00
enduro
28:01
i thought endurance right enduro and
28:04
somehow
28:05
you know this is where when richie
28:06
started i thought okay that makes sense
28:07
that this kid's going to go fast
28:08
downhill
28:10
he's got that short term you would
28:11
consider most people an understanding
28:14
when i say short term you know whatever
28:15
three to five minutes downhill racing
28:18
um you got the mass like you said it's
28:21
no
28:22
richie brought it up he said you know he
28:24
noticed he just
28:25
you know he starts basically he just
28:28
starts accelerating you know
28:30
pointing downhill because of obviously
28:32
mass i don't know if
28:33
most people know this but you look at
28:34
downhill skiers
28:37
it's it's the moving target forever the
28:39
downhill world my friend was one of the
28:41
top ski coaches in the world
28:43
and i worked with bode miller and uh
28:45
darren rolfes
28:46
and worked for red bull and had a lot of
28:48
successful years and you know they would
28:50
just pack the mass on these skiers these
28:52
you know downhill skiers uh alpine
28:55
skiers
28:56
because they could see that weight would
28:57
accelerate uh that's just physics right
29:00
so it kind of made sense but then
29:02
there's a caveat with that
29:03
weight right you got to carry that
29:04
weight that weight is more fatiguing if
29:06
you don't have that
29:08
which richie brought up developing that
29:10
fitness to support that weight which is
29:12
partly not a training it not developed
29:15
from
29:15
training it's genetics and if you fight
29:17
your genetics you might just disrupt
29:19
your body's own uh innocence abilities
29:22
we've watched that with even richie and
29:24
his
29:26
past current or you know
29:30
teammate i was going to say i can
29:31
remember if he was on yeti again but
29:33
yeah he is with um jared
29:36
graves right we see him i think i
29:38
learned a bit just watching from the
29:40
background watching him maneuver between
29:42
power and strength work to more
29:44
endurance based work and
29:45
yeah hopefully my ego is not big enough
29:48
or too big and uh
29:50
you know and that i couldn't be learning
29:52
something and i there's always something
29:53
discovered so
29:55
what i basically discovered was yeah
29:57
that through these guys and these
29:58
athletes that you had
29:59
you had genetics and so what i
30:03
knew is the tr you know and body type
30:06
and you also had the athletes input so
30:09
what i i like to do is
30:10
george is take the uh look at
30:14
uh the training pro protocol uh as
30:17
decided
30:18
based on three levels of input first one
30:21
would be the discipline
30:22
so whether dh or enduro and that that
30:25
would have
30:26
um that would have an effect on the
30:28
training
30:29
um i would prescribe two would probably
30:32
be or not probably would be body type so
30:35
whether an ectomorph
30:37
endomorph or mesomorph and i'll let
30:39
people look that up if they're not sure
30:40
what those are but
30:42
three different body types and three the
30:44
input of the
30:45
athlete so you know their physical
30:48
strengths and weaknesses so they do a
30:49
questionnaire with me
30:50
that's why it's ideal sometimes i spend
30:52
some time with them you know even around
30:54
the home and
30:55
richie's out here often and we just sort
30:57
of chat about it and he's on his bike
30:59
and he's
31:00
probably thinking about it but um you
31:02
know that
31:03
said i also don't believe enduro
31:06
and uh dh are much different than each
31:08
other um
31:10
both have multiple you know efforts runs
31:14
you know downhiller will have multiple
31:17
runs
31:18
um you know uh throughout the day
31:21
in practice days or training days um
31:25
and you know versus the stages of
31:27
training or stages
31:28
of racing that the enduro guy will do
31:32
you think about it in that term and in
31:34
some ways
31:35
believe it or not if the research is
31:37
right and i've done a bit of it
31:39
there could be more difficulty with the
31:40
dh style event
31:42
physically because you have to turn it
31:45
off for a while
31:46
so whether it's that return to the pits
31:47
communicate with your
31:49
uh mechanic and etc the team then get
31:52
back on the
31:53
lift spend a bunch of time down time and
31:55
i don't know what do you think jack
31:57
that's
31:57
probably in anywhere between 30 and 60
31:59
minutes sometimes between runs or it can
32:01
be
32:01
at least yeah yeah and that's and that's
32:04
tough because your system goes back into
32:06
recovery mode and it can
32:07
kind of go where if you're const like
32:10
believe it or not you could test this in
32:12
interval training if you have a little
32:14
more if that was controlled and that was
32:16
a bit shorter that
32:17
recovery time and um your body would
32:21
stay more
32:21
let's just say more warm it would stay
32:23
more um
32:25
primed and so there's some difficulty
32:28
there and that's where it
32:29
could be misunderstood if i've actually
32:30
looked at the total amount
32:32
of seat time um
32:35
at a downhill event of course billy
32:36
enduro has got a bit more volume
32:39
um but again i'll go back to what i said
32:42
prior to that which is
32:43
i still take the uh the body type and
32:46
the athlete's input
32:47
into it um then you know
32:51
with also like with recovery
32:54
um a factor and then you've got
32:57
also between them you have very very
33:00
similar
33:01
uh biomechanics which is
33:04
you know primarily the focus of my
33:07
performance
33:08
strength training is working on those
33:10
biomechanics
33:11
i think that's what the training a lot
33:13
of people will come and they'll say what
33:14
muscle are you working or
33:16
you know what what what do you i i'll
33:19
say work
33:20
don't think of it as a a muscle what
33:22
muscle group
33:23
but as what movement so we're constantly
33:26
developing
33:27
movements um and and that's kind of the
33:30
focus a bit more and those movements are
33:31
quite similar
33:33
uh you know the kinematics of a dh
33:36
versus an enduro bike are quite similar
33:39
especially these days they seem to be
33:40
getting closer and closer
33:42
as we see bikes get more slack and long
33:44
and whatever and
33:45
and the physical and uh and
33:48
psychological demands
33:49
of both versions of racing are similar
33:51
like
33:52
if there's arguments that you know you
33:55
hear people i was talking this the nigel
33:57
page recently you know like the tracks
33:58
are gnarlier for enduro or whatever
34:00
well yes and no right it's it's all
34:03
relative
34:04
um i would say that you've got to
34:06
remember that
34:07
charging on a smaller bike even if the
34:09
pace was a bit slower
34:10
is going to be just as physically
34:11
demanding if not more so
34:14
you you know you got a lower travel bike
34:16
so it's going to be more physically
34:17
demanding than the big bike
34:19
in some ways on a course or in a track
34:22
um then you have including the
34:24
descending
34:26
at near the same angles or pitch so that
34:28
puts the body at a certain position
34:32
physically and then you have the demand
34:34
demand of the train so you've got like
34:36
um
34:37
you know roots rocks whatever drops
34:40
jumps the the gender the rough stuff
34:42
that
34:43
requires physical uh effort
34:46
or or applies physical uh demand
34:49
and so again it's it's why i do not
34:53
put a full or even high emphasis with
34:56
athletes
34:57
on whether they are a dh or an enduro
35:00
rider
35:00
alone like it comes into the equation
35:03
but
35:04
it's just a part of the equation um
35:07
along with again
35:08
the the the body type which we evaluate
35:11
in a lot of ways and i won't go into it
35:13
all but
35:14
some people see that the way i do it on
35:16
my instagram whether it's
35:18
testing um mobility and range of motion
35:21
and then also
35:22
um weight to power ratio and then
35:25
athlete filling out a pretty pretty uh
35:29
in-depth questionnaire
35:31
and then after they fill up the
35:33
questionnaire i'll still spend time
35:35
you know on zoomer and a phone call and
35:36
sort of try and pick through it a little
35:38
bit more and see if i can really get
35:39
some answers on where they
35:41
where they where they're you know where
35:43
they can improve
35:44
so okay so let's say
35:48
the season's ended todd you your riders
35:50
have had a i don't know if you give your
35:51
riders a few weeks off but
35:53
they return early november is it usually
35:57
that that sounds about right yeah tell
36:00
me a little bit about
36:01
how you about those first few weeks of
36:03
training and how you kind of ramp it up
36:07
over the next oh to christmas is it
36:09
usually is that is that kind of phase
36:11
one
36:13
yeah i guess you know without giving
36:15
away the performix uh
36:17
secret sauce you know uh yet
36:20
not sounding like a um an infomercial
36:22
here
36:23
for uh you know for myself and for
36:26
performance but this is why i believe
36:28
performance is unique
36:30
to other training systems out there you
36:32
know i
36:33
i really i have to admit this and if i
36:36
don't i'm just sort of
36:37
hiding in in the in the dark here about
36:39
this but
36:40
first i must explain that you know like
36:42
our training is based on
36:44
three areas uh when i say training yeah
36:47
one of the so it's i don't want to say
36:49
i'm don't don't think i'm trying to dumb
36:50
this down i'm not
36:52
this is just an easier way of seeing it
36:55
in in
36:56
verbally and it's that one area is
36:58
strength training
36:59
call it like gym work um
37:03
another part is cardiovascular training
37:05
so call that
37:06
on bike you know stationary pedaling uh
37:09
rowing
37:10
and uh various other uh activities i
37:12
recommend you know such as like
37:14
cross-country skiing hiking etc
37:17
and the third part would be broken down
37:19
into uh
37:20
you know stretching and mobility work um
37:24
through traditional you know static
37:27
stretching dynamic or even
37:31
um you know non-traditional stretching
37:34
that i do through movement
37:36
including yoga pilates now
37:40
also understand some of these areas can
37:42
also overlap as well
37:44
meaning the strength training the gym
37:46
work could
37:47
be focused on endurance um
37:50
and even the cardiovascular development
37:53
uh
37:55
you know alone just through like various
37:57
like say
37:58
circuit training style or strength and
38:00
conditioning phases
38:02
um as well as you know the
38:05
cardiovascular training can be focused
38:06
on
38:07
on strength and power through like
38:09
intervals or
38:11
um high intensity outputs obviously
38:14
you're you're going to be working your
38:15
legs hard
38:16
and you could see that as strength yeah
38:19
um
38:19
and last there are phases that are you
38:21
know like where mobility
38:23
work is built into the strength training
38:25
so where the strength training will have
38:27
movements that are really difficult so
38:30
is it complex yes it is and i i i i
38:35
it isn't i'll sometimes say it's not
38:38
rocket science but then sometimes i
38:39
surprise myself and
38:41
my wife will stop me and she goes it is
38:42
it's a it's a it is a bit of a
38:45
you know a science that you you know
38:47
that you like when somebody
38:48
sends me an instagram or something says
38:50
like you know how many reps is richie
38:52
doing in that squad or how many and it's
38:54
like they want to how many reps should i
38:55
do in my squats
38:56
like whoa like that's like saying to me
38:59
how i
38:59
how do i live a happy life well that's
39:02
like what wait a minute
39:03
there's so many way like what are you
39:05
trying to work on with your squats but
39:07
you know it's it after
39:10
25 plus years of training athletes and
39:13
somebody trusting me along the way all
39:15
these athletes that are
39:16
quite incredible and you know my 52
39:19
years of age
39:20
you know i it provides you with a ton of
39:22
research and development and i'd say
39:24
that's
39:24
it and you know besides some obviously
39:26
really unruly nostril hairs and knee
39:28
hair ear hairs but
39:30
you know that's kind of what the age
39:32
comes
39:33
with then so you know
39:36
in the kind of it's like the opposite of
39:39
like what i understand to be in the
39:40
bodybuilding world where they would do
39:43
a day on split days where you do monday
39:46
you might do chest
39:47
tuesday back etc you're more focused on
39:50
doing everything all is it more on
39:53
compound movements is it more on
39:55
and and balancing not even the not even
39:58
doing the strength and endurance
40:00
separately like kind of the balance
40:02
between those things
40:04
is that the thing that changes well with
40:07
the performance
40:08
training uh protocol you know it's
40:11
general
40:12
again uh this is the general view of it
40:15
uh
40:15
but again i gotta gotta watch my secret
40:18
sauce here right so
40:20
you know phase one is generally
40:23
it generally and so gives it some
40:24
answers here to the listeners
40:26
generally strength one is strength
40:28
training is unilateral so i'll work left
40:31
and right side of the body
40:33
uh along with reciprocating so the push
40:35
and pull so if you look at your body
40:37
you have a bicep and a tricep you have a
40:39
quadricep and hamstring
40:40
you have a push and pull muscles
40:43
pectoral muscle rhomboid muscle so your
40:45
body's been built and evolved
40:46
into this machine that can reciprocate
40:48
so you can climb a tree and come back
40:50
down or whatever your
40:51
you know your purposes and your
40:52
functionality um
40:54
so i'll work that and i'll try and get
40:56
that into balance um
40:58
that i don't mind saying sounds like you
41:00
know i said i wouldn't give away secret
41:01
sauce but
41:02
the reality is it's not anybody could go
41:05
up there right now and do some push and
41:06
pull exercises
41:08
and do um you know left and right side
41:11
of their body but i have to admit that
41:13
it's taking me a long time and there's a
41:15
richie will tell you
41:16
there's i prescribe this for even for a
41:19
few years
41:20
where the athletes if let's say
41:23
um they can push a certain amount with
41:26
their quadricep
41:28
uh i want to be able to pull a certain
41:30
amount with their hamstring
41:31
and in a reciprocating movement or say
41:34
shoulder internal versus external and
41:36
not everything's a one-to-one ratio
41:38
in fact some are 10 different some are
41:40
300 percent different
41:42
and i studied this um uh through the
41:45
grey's anatomy book
41:46
and through one of my professors was
41:48
given the name mr performax because i
41:50
used to say
41:51
hey if you perform x shouldn't you be
41:53
able to perform y
41:54
and he said you got to call your company
41:56
that cause you always say it
41:58
and true story so the strength training
42:01
has got to be that's where i start phase
42:03
one cardiovascular training another
42:06
protocol
42:06
um is more as we know uh developing the
42:09
aerobic
42:11
at level one i call it development and
42:13
then the stretching and mobility work
42:15
is uh static stretching very basic stuff
42:18
and
42:19
some yoga low intensity and
42:22
you know these these phases are also
42:24
determined by
42:25
uh you know determining length and
42:27
intensity
42:29
by the athlete again meaning body type
42:32
strengths and weaknesses number of years
42:35
they're with the performance system
42:37
regiment as richie will tell you our
42:40
first phase of training now
42:41
completely starts different than those
42:43
first few years now because
42:45
a lot of the stuff he checks those boxes
42:47
and he doesn't and
42:48
he doesn't he doesn't regress
42:51
he maintains them even through the race
42:53
season and we don't need to come back
42:55
as long and then there's also goal
42:57
setting and testing
42:59
and the balance between protocol
43:02
and individual athlete is i think
43:05
very very important yeah so let's talk
43:09
sorry catch up you asked me about
43:11
compound
43:12
so i didn't mention compound yeah
43:14
compound i don't feel like i
43:16
answered that so you know you know is
43:19
there
43:19
is there um you know you kind of said
43:22
like um
43:24
what kind of movements the bodybuilding
43:25
versus um
43:27
you know uh like what we were talking
43:31
about
43:31
individual body parts and stuff um
43:34
in short yes the training can be split
43:37
between you know like
43:38
i i focus on those compound or
43:40
multi-joint movements
43:42
um you know i i split things between
43:45
typically between richie will tell you
43:47
upper and lower body
43:48
whole body and various applications from
43:52
you know single exercises in a workout
43:54
one single exercise to
43:56
up to 20 plus exercises in the workout
43:59
and
43:59
compound uh movements or multi-joint
44:02
movements
44:03
are are are the primary exercises for
44:05
majority of these phases
44:07
you know including the traditional lifts
44:09
like deadlifts
44:10
squats bench press uh back row chin ups
44:14
and
44:14
cleans albeit um you know many of them
44:17
are modified to suit for the sport
44:20
as many would be aware of if they've
44:22
seen my performance
44:23
um sometimes um you know social media
44:26
and they see
44:27
a thing called performance clean press
44:29
and i'll get all the crossfitters on
44:31
there oh that's wrong that's not that's
44:33
a
44:33
terrible clean press and i'm like yeah
44:35
it's absolutely a terrible
44:36
crossfit clean press it's not the
44:38
purpose um
44:40
this is directed towards uh the mtb
44:42
we're not
44:43
seeing how much weight we can lift we're
44:45
not in competition to see how much lift
44:48
i actually would like to see athletes
44:49
get away with the greatest amount of
44:51
work from the least amount of resistance
44:53
so there's a challenge to the
44:54
biomechanics there
44:56
yeah i like to add some of that too it's
45:00
like
45:00
we always see you know i think the
45:02
computer instagram you know they post
45:05
pictures of squats or something and
45:06
we're doing clean and press and
45:08
i always like to call it the performex
45:10
clean press because
45:11
it's not quite what like traditional
45:14
might be but it's also like
45:16
we don't technically need the
45:17
traditional
45:19
no you know clean press too whereas like
45:21
the one we do is a little more
45:23
shoulder involved and yeah it's like
45:26
we're not always going for that
45:27
max rep weight it's a little more
45:30
functional for us
45:31
so closer to being what you would
45:33
experience being on the bike
45:35
yeah yeah so
45:38
let's talk a little bit about that time
45:40
on the bike that you spend
45:42
because jack i don't think you're a big
45:44
fan of road bikes i had
45:46
have you got a road bike no i did have
45:48
for a while but i mean
45:50
we don't really live in a a country for
45:53
it i mean
45:53
the roads here are so dangerous there's
45:55
so busy on this tiny little island and
45:57
then the weather is just
45:59
always [ __ ] i um i i have a what bike at
46:03
home
46:03
which is um part of my training for
46:06
various things
46:07
um big road bike fan richie
46:12
yeah i got into it a couple years ago
46:14
and um
46:15
and i always enjoy it a bit just because
46:17
it's you know it's nice to get away from
46:19
the mountain bike for a little bit
46:21
yeah i live somewhere else for sure but
46:23
here it's just like oh
46:25
yeah yeah you you ride the e-bike a lot
46:29
jack
46:30
yeah i mean for downhill it's like i see
46:33
it as being essential
46:34
i know todd will agree with me because
46:36
i've seen him say this exact thing on
46:37
his own instagram
46:38
but um like i can go out on the ebike
46:42
and do
46:42
two hours somewhere where there's no
46:44
flat miles it's just
46:45
up to the top and then back down and
46:47
just repetition just smashing the lines
46:49
just
46:50
getting the runs in and then i can come
46:53
home and i feel like i haven't done
46:54
anything so i can just go straight in
46:55
the gym after lunch and do like a two
46:57
three hour gym session and
46:59
and get my training that way so i've had
47:00
my technical time on the download bike
47:02
or the e-bike
47:04
and then i then get my value in the gym
47:06
whereas if i'd done the morning ride on
47:08
the trail bike and done like three four
47:09
thousand feet of climbing
47:11
i'd then go in the gym in the in the
47:12
afternoon and just be like oh
47:14
i'm so tired um so so yeah there's
47:17
definitely a purpose for e-bikes for
47:19
for downhills and richie what do you
47:21
think obviously with enduro
47:23
you're you're coming at it from a
47:24
slightly different angle if you do you
47:26
see any real place for e-bikes in your
47:28
training
47:29
yeah i mean um i think it
47:32
definitely depends where you live um if
47:34
i live for toddlers i'd definitely have
47:36
an e-bike and probably
47:37
all the time i probably wouldn't ride a
47:39
road bike at all but um
47:41
yeah i'm i'm not in the like greatest
47:43
place for an e-bike like there's not a
47:45
ton of climbing or anything so
47:46
okay it's good enough for me just get
47:48
out on the mountain bike and do a crazy
47:50
ride
47:50
but yeah yeah i think e-bike will be
47:53
cool just because
47:54
um you also have like the added weight
47:55
which i think would be
47:57
you know interesting to ride around with
47:59
i haven't ridden too many e-bikes so i
48:01
can't see much so
48:03
but i'll drive up for sure yeah to be
48:05
fair that's something i definitely agree
48:07
with when whenever i
48:09
have a i usually kind of do it in blocks
48:10
and i'll ride the e-bike for a little
48:12
bit and then i'll have a little bit of
48:13
time off it and
48:14
whenever i come off it and hop on either
48:15
my trail bike on my on my downward bike
48:17
like
48:18
last friday was the first time i've
48:19
ridden my download bike since since
48:21
loser so that's like
48:22
as i said two and a half months and my
48:24
downlight felt light
48:26
like it felt like a small trail bike so
48:28
i'd been living on the e-bike for a few
48:30
weeks so
48:31
so yeah it's there's definitely a place
48:33
for them any
48:34
any yeti bike on the way richie that you
48:37
can tell us about
48:39
i don't know man it's hard to i'll just
48:42
tell what's going on
48:43
there's a bloody e-bike coming geez
48:47
tell us when and we know it's turquoise
48:49
so just like
48:51
stop being stop being remy natalia
48:57
so todd you it is kind of becoming a
49:01
parent you work with
49:02
because you work with richie and
49:04
athletes of that level
49:06
you it seems to me that you
49:11
there isn't really like i was thinking
49:12
when we started this conversation there
49:13
was going to be phases of definite
49:16
phases when things change and when and
49:18
when the emphasis on training changes
49:20
but
49:21
because of the kind of level of rider
49:22
you work with they never
49:24
seem to drop below a certain level and
49:26
it's just a constant evolving
49:29
plan is is that right is that is it
49:32
well hey listen if you don't mind i just
49:34
because it's it's on my mind and you
49:36
guys are just talking i just want to
49:37
throw
49:38
kind of two cents and this will kind of
49:40
flow right into what you asked and
49:42
the big thing is you know you guys were
49:43
talking about this on bike stuff
49:45
uh whether it's road cycling or e-bike
49:47
because this is so interesting to people
49:49
i've actually got
49:50
uh article coming up on pink bike about
49:52
this and it's like
49:54
you know like the quick answer with road
49:57
bikes
49:58
uh you know aerobic development is
50:01
important
50:01
which we all know uh science proves that
50:04
you know to develop our best anaerobic
50:07
ability which is
50:08
you know um
50:12
a majority of the of our sport is
50:14
anaerobic especially with high intensity
50:16
short
50:17
efforts and so the pyramid um
50:20
chris carmichael a lot of people out
50:22
there that are cardiovascular experts
50:24
have proven this
50:25
you know this pyramid effect that you
50:26
build this base everybody likes to use
50:28
the word
50:28
i often ask actually i have to be honest
50:31
somebody asked me last night
50:32
and i said do you know what bass means
50:34
and they get no idea they think they
50:35
thought it was the bass coming from
50:36
their 10 inch sub but
50:38
um you know it's like no no the base is
50:41
the bottom end of that aerobic
50:42
i'm not going to go into an
50:43
understanding of mitochondria and
50:45
respiratory system but you need to build
50:47
that
50:47
foundation for the base so we've
50:49
realized that road cycling can be
50:51
quite um it can be a great tool
50:54
to do that and jack and
50:58
and i think and richie saying these
51:00
things have been
51:01
great because they're saying that you
51:03
know depending on their
51:04
their climate or their um you know is it
51:07
you know i i know now i've got athletes
51:09
in california just said
51:11
you know i aaron gwen he's like doesn't
51:13
really want to ride
51:14
we actually talked about this last week
51:16
and he's like i don't want to be on the
51:17
road anymore
51:18
too many people gotten hurt getting hit
51:19
by a car um
51:22
and it's like a lot of guys have so
51:24
what's the benefits if you're trying to
51:26
do something that's supposed to be
51:27
improving your
51:28
fitness and you're hurt and now you're
51:31
you're way back right so
51:32
um you know i think you could develop in
51:35
a lot of ways and that's
51:36
why i also the base can be built a lot
51:39
of ways like i like to
51:40
to get guys on road bikes as richie just
51:44
told you
51:45
um and i told them to get a cross cycle
51:47
cross bike
51:48
a while back ago too but
51:52
i like to keep it you know um
51:56
i like to keep it a bit more dynamic as
51:59
well because the problem with the road
52:00
bikes it starts to become
52:02
quite an overused thing of linear
52:04
movements
52:05
and then eventually can develop some
52:07
habits of incorrect
52:09
body position and alignment um it's this
52:12
is quite obvious when you see a road
52:13
cyclist and you see their position their
52:15
tucker their arrow position and they're
52:16
just using their quads they're trying to
52:18
be
52:18
as efficient as possible so and that's
52:21
not always our goal with our mountain
52:22
biking so
52:24
um that's why i prescribe more dynamic
52:26
stuff too like
52:27
using mtb and again even ebike
52:31
to put in that volume of base or that
52:34
low intensity
52:35
uh volume to build that aerobic base so
52:37
you can build that anaerobic base
52:39
and also rowing and cross-country skiing
52:42
again depending on i'm not going to ask
52:43
some guy in socal to do
52:45
cross-country skiing unless he's willing
52:47
to drive you know six hours to big bear
52:49
every day but
52:49
you know snowshoeing and hiking and
52:52
running and
52:53
even swimming uh you know that said i'm
52:56
also
52:56
not opposed to that road cycling again
52:59
richie can confirm that
53:00
he did 75 miles today on his indoor
53:04
trainer
53:05
um this was a big one yeah
53:08
so ebike what's
53:11
what what what do i see there is you
53:14
know i just
53:14
this is part of the conversation i did
53:16
this e-bike thing on pink bike a while
53:18
ago with seth sherlock and it's like
53:20
they're a great tool because you can
53:23
like jack said you can kind of control
53:24
your your environment but what i like
53:28
too is like i've been doing it around
53:29
here for a while and shocked me because
53:31
i've been riding with a group of guys
53:32
that got me together
53:33
and really neat like a christian beijing
53:35
guy from the original prank movies
53:37
everybody
53:38
who's more than 30 years old knows about
53:40
the cranked series
53:41
um he's kind of my neighbor and a bunch
53:43
of those guys
53:44
asked me last year uh in the spring do
53:47
you want to join our e-bike crew
53:48
and i was like all right i got my e-bike
53:50
from europe i brought it over i went
53:51
over there expecting all of us to put
53:53
these things in
53:54
eco mode because these guys are pretty
53:56
fit and strong guys including i got dave
53:58
nirona in the group
53:59
who's an ex three-time endurance
54:03
uh world champion like a 24-hour
54:05
endurance so i had these guys surrounded
54:07
by fit guys
54:08
i go over there in eco mode and we're
54:10
going to go pedal and
54:12
they're all you know they're slagging me
54:14
they're like what are you doing dude put
54:16
that sumbitch in full
54:17
you know uh boost mode we got into boost
54:20
mode
54:21
the level of intensity these guys were
54:23
riding in we
54:24
climbed and got to like richie was
54:26
saying in my area squamish
54:28
we got to an area that would have took
54:30
four hours of climbing and we got there
54:32
in
54:32
45 minutes but it was
54:36
it was and it was up to like you know
54:38
whether it was ego or whether it was
54:39
you know whatever i could go solo and do
54:41
it at any level i want but that day was
54:43
it was aerobic anaerobic but the
54:45
difference was there
54:47
i got a greater much greater level
54:50
of descending so that's also physical
54:53
and we can't forget that that's also
54:55
whole body and grip
54:56
and hinging at the hips and supporting
54:59
your body weight and it can be
55:00
static it can be dynamic meaning you're
55:04
moving or you're
55:04
staying still and that's a whole other
55:07
level of fitness that
55:08
you don't create when you're just on a
55:10
road bike pedaling
55:11
so um i'm not gonna say that you know
55:15
one is better than the other it's like
55:18
they're all different so
55:19
just kind of keep don't you know i just
55:22
want to always remind people when you're
55:23
doing stuff
55:24
there's no matter of fact in a lot of
55:26
these things right it's
55:28
it's it's a moving target and they all
55:32
overlap in some ways and they all
55:33
complement and they all do some
55:35
different things
55:36
so you know that sounds like a lot of
55:38
times what i'm giving you answers
55:40
towards but
55:40
yeah and do do you ramp things up then
55:44
towards the season once once we get back
55:47
after christmas he just said richie's
55:48
had it well he said he's had a big day
55:50
on the road bike today
55:51
is this now where the the real work gets
55:54
done between now and
55:55
the season starting well to give you an
55:58
idea richie will do about
56:00
um the team depends on the year we've
56:02
had years where he does
56:03
eight phases of training and last year
56:05
2020
56:07
um 2020 because of covid we did
56:10
14 um different phases of training
56:14
so we will do anywhere it just depends
56:17
on
56:17
how long and the phases of training i'm
56:19
working with the athletes is anywhere
56:20
between
56:21
it can be as short as a week or two and
56:23
it can be as long as eight
56:25
um and and in those phases there's what
56:27
we
56:28
often hear is um you know um
56:32
periodization so higher and lower
56:34
intensity to allow the body to
56:36
push um to you know a new
56:40
goal or level and then also recover from
56:42
that because you can't constantly push
56:44
against something
56:46
to achieve um you know um
56:49
success or or or constant adaptation
56:53
that's all it is the body is adapting to
56:54
a stress
56:55
so at the moment richie and i have kind
56:58
of moved into a
56:59
we've moved through already uh we're
57:01
kind of in he actually worked with
57:03
another trainer that i brought on board
57:06
um to help me and i actually just stuck
57:09
him into the other trainer
57:10
addison baines hands for a few weeks and
57:13
said
57:14
i'm gonna have no input at all i want
57:16
you guys i want addison to fully take
57:18
charge do some power work with him um
57:22
addison comes from an incredible
57:23
pedigree of road racing in europe and
57:25
then becoming a us
57:27
uh crossfit a national competitor
57:30
and uh successful one and then so you
57:33
got this incredible
57:35
you know real broad stroke kind of guy
57:37
that's done it all right kind of
57:39
the left and the right and so we put in
57:42
there and now him and i are into a phase
57:44
of
57:44
strength and power work um we just did
57:47
two programs that are completely
57:50
opposing each other
57:51
one more focused on you know aerobic
57:54
endurance and
57:56
including the strength training and um
57:59
muscle endurance and then now we're
58:00
going for
58:01
max strength and leverage
58:05
um phase so the phases will will will
58:08
change a lot
58:09
and um generally
58:12
the intensity levels will
58:15
like the efforts that the fatigue will
58:18
generally and i think richie would agree
58:21
with this but
58:23
it builds towards the season and peaks
58:26
probably um within about a month
58:31
prior to the start of the season yeah
58:34
okay and how is that very similar to
58:37
what you do with aaron
58:40
from a downhill perspective absolutely
58:42
like similar yeah like
58:44
you know it's the analogy that if you
58:45
went to fox
58:47
and you told them hey jordy uh i don't
58:50
like
58:50
the what they call upside down fork you
58:53
know
58:53
that's what the moto guys call it right
58:55
the you know or
58:56
the right side up or whatever you want
58:58
to call it and usually the shock spring
58:59
should be
59:00
this long he's going to tell you to go
59:01
pound sand right he's going to say no
59:03
no dude this is what this is the way
59:05
this it's not because they can't just go
59:06
make it it's just proven that this works
59:08
but then you tune it for each individual
59:11
rider
59:11
so then you start valving it you tune it
59:13
but the general structure so i
59:15
i'd say that with my training you know i
59:19
i could tell you everybody is
59:21
individually absolutely different
59:23
that would be complete and it's not
59:25
hopefully so that i can get away with
59:27
less work
59:28
or you know you know i i think
59:31
anybody that knows me and spent time
59:33
around me saying i'm not a fan of that
59:35
um you know i'm i'm all about
59:38
you know if anything i might i might be
59:41
too enthusiastic about that but i
59:42
i would say that again it goes back to
59:45
that body
59:46
type um and that strengths and
59:49
weaknesses
59:49
and then what is this a new athlete with
59:52
me and are they generally learning the
59:54
new stuff with me like are they
59:55
generally getting
59:57
a handle on this this this protocol that
1:00:00
happens through these uh phases of
1:00:03
training or is it richie
1:00:05
who's done it quite a few times and i'll
1:00:07
kim and i'll get on the beginning and
1:00:08
be like we'll kind of chat about it and
1:00:10
almost get the
1:00:11
like their input like hey what do you
1:00:13
think we need to be right now
1:00:15
and you know something we don't um
1:00:19
you know it sounds like there's a
1:00:21
there's is there a method to the madness
1:00:23
there is 100
1:00:24
there's if i was going to quickly
1:00:26
outline it we start with that dynamic
1:00:28
stuff that
1:00:29
reciprocating left and right the balance
1:00:31
i talked about that we move into a
1:00:33
strength phase um and that strength
1:00:36
phase
1:00:37
uh lays down some foundation then we
1:00:40
usually go into some power work and if
1:00:41
you're unsure of the difference between
1:00:43
strength and power
1:00:44
you know i often just you know i often
1:00:47
say to people
1:00:48
my greatest focus with my athletes
1:00:52
um with this is understanding power you
1:00:55
know and
1:00:55
understanding the difference and to
1:00:58
understand that that's
1:00:59
typically the goal and power is force
1:01:02
times distance
1:01:03
you know over time so you could say that
1:01:06
this
1:01:07
you know the strength uh the force is
1:01:09
the strength i guess you could say and
1:01:11
the distance in time is the endurance
1:01:14
so um my ultimate goal through these
1:01:17
phases of training is for
1:01:19
cut for the athlete to come out the
1:01:20
other end pre-season with the
1:01:22
highest level of um you know of of power
1:01:26
um and that's where i work and so
1:01:29
strength
1:01:30
so power is really what i've just
1:01:31
mentioned is basically
1:01:33
strength meeting the right balance of
1:01:36
endurance um and when strength balances
1:01:39
with endurance
1:01:40
that's power uh and and that to me is
1:01:44
the sport and
1:01:45
if i was to go any further i would you
1:01:47
know i would start giving you the
1:01:48
ingredients of
1:01:49
of the secret sauce right and so yeah
1:01:52
hopefully it's not too
1:01:54
cheeky but um that's
1:01:57
that's it you obviously kind of measure
1:01:59
everything
1:02:00
yeah yeah do you expect
1:02:04
do you expect your riders to improve
1:02:08
their numbers every year
1:02:09
if they want to get faster or do you
1:02:13
do you keep them on a level
1:02:17
no i i want to see an improvement every
1:02:19
year there's no reason that adaptation
1:02:21
should not go that direction i mean
1:02:24
richie will tell you
1:02:25
i know his numbers we keep a file i keep
1:02:27
it i
1:02:28
can't ask him to do it every week i
1:02:31
can't even ask him to do it every month
1:02:33
but your fitness at a certain point
1:02:36
is not about leaps and bounds it's about
1:02:38
nudging
1:02:40
small nudges and those small nudges
1:02:43
are not only a physical physiological
1:02:45
change but they're also a
1:02:47
psychological change and you know we're
1:02:49
not even talking about the psychological
1:02:51
part like you hear it like
1:02:52
you hear all the motocross athletes and
1:02:54
whether they're being you know we're all
1:02:55
watching supercross or something
1:02:57
and training is you know training is
1:03:00
psychological and and and you know
1:03:03
[Music]
1:03:04
so some of it's more richie's more aware
1:03:08
of
1:03:08
like i'll say to him hey dude there's a
1:03:11
you know
1:03:11
recently there's an 8 000 meter road we
1:03:13
got to set a new record
1:03:15
um you know a month or three weeks later
1:03:18
we got like okay there's a new deadlift
1:03:20
uh effort i want to be able to do so
1:03:22
something could be a strength
1:03:24
goal it could be an endurance goal and
1:03:26
some of it he's more aware of
1:03:27
and to be honest with you some of this
1:03:29
stuff is just
1:03:30
the athlete is not conscious of it it's
1:03:34
more you know maybe that's why i got the
1:03:38
friend of mine a long time ago told me i
1:03:40
should make a jedi level
1:03:41
decal for the and it's like i'm not
1:03:44
going to pretend to be
1:03:45
you know obi-wan kenobi here or yoda or
1:03:47
something but
1:03:49
you know i really love the psychology i
1:03:51
studied it for like and i realized that
1:03:55
you know it's called priming and if they
1:03:57
do it at nasa they do it at these
1:03:59
big and it's like these things you need
1:04:01
to do these priming
1:04:03
and look it up look up priming
1:04:05
psychological and you'll see that these
1:04:07
things that you can do create this
1:04:10
environment
1:04:10
so that the athlete is constantly just
1:04:13
getting biofeedback that's saying to
1:04:15
them
1:04:16
you're hey you're improving yeah and so
1:04:19
maybe when they get to the
1:04:20
you know they get the top of their run
1:04:22
or they get the top of the race day
1:04:25
i've always said it that psychologically
1:04:28
i get athletes
1:04:29
that say i need to work on my confidence
1:04:31
and i'll say
1:04:33
i don't necessarily think that's that's
1:04:36
the goal it's
1:04:37
the confidence is there if you guys are
1:04:39
riding if they're racing downhill bikes
1:04:41
and
1:04:41
you know doing these sports and and
1:04:43
riding a dirt they got the confidence
1:04:45
but
1:04:46
it's often um you know
1:04:49
the roadblocks are more you know
1:04:52
self-doubt and and if you the doubting
1:04:56
and so to me we're trying to do things
1:04:58
that are going to start removing
1:05:00
self-doubt and then it just frees the
1:05:02
athlete up to be more
1:05:04
um you know let's say take advantage of
1:05:06
their their best ability their
1:05:09
their skill and their physical ability
1:05:11
and their risk taking
1:05:12
so little things you can do to nudge
1:05:14
that
1:05:15
um year after year that's really
1:05:18
important so
1:05:20
hopefully self-doubt richie you've won
1:05:24
the ews
1:05:25
twice um yeah i mean there's always a
1:05:28
bit of
1:05:30
you know that going through your head
1:05:31
when you haven't like raced or something
1:05:33
in a while but
1:05:34
yeah i don't know i'm always confident
1:05:37
like with todd obviously like we've been
1:05:39
working for a while and
1:05:40
you know like it's worked in the past so
1:05:44
um yeah and if you know you're you're
1:05:46
ahead on your numbers on certain things
1:05:48
that is that what todd's talking about
1:05:50
you know you sit in the start line and
1:05:52
you think
1:05:52
well i'm ahead on this i'm ahead on that
1:05:55
i should be able to smash it
1:05:57
um i think at that point i'm
1:06:01
probably not thinking about it too much
1:06:03
but probably a bit yeah i mean i think
1:06:05
when i'm feeling confident like in the
1:06:07
gym or on the bike or something it
1:06:09
definitely helps when you line up and
1:06:10
you're like all right
1:06:11
you know i had a good off season like i
1:06:13
should i have no reason not to do well
1:06:15
so
1:06:16
that definitely helps yeah and once the
1:06:19
season starts todd
1:06:22
is it more of a kind of holding pattern
1:06:26
yeah yeah that's a great way of with
1:06:28
travel
1:06:29
and uh you know the ability to
1:06:32
um you know if
1:06:36
it's probably been the greatest um
1:06:38
learning experience for myself
1:06:40
it's like because we're not olympic
1:06:42
athletes we're not let's say
1:06:43
peaking or going to a singular
1:06:46
uh time period or event we've got a
1:06:49
season that's spread out sometimes
1:06:51
massively like potentially this this
1:06:54
this coming year right jack with our you
1:06:57
know our spring and almost fall series
1:07:00
depending on how things work out and
1:07:01
whether olympics happen and blah blah
1:07:03
blah blah
1:07:04
so you know when is the off season so
1:07:07
like for us
1:07:08
with the downhillers we might go back
1:07:09
into some real heavy protocol
1:07:12
with two months off so you know with two
1:07:15
months off in the summer i'm not gonna
1:07:16
have the athletes just
1:07:18
trying to go into maintenance mode no
1:07:19
it's like it's back game on i'll
1:07:21
probably
1:07:22
not probably i will go back to my
1:07:24
athletes and
1:07:25
in that time period of anything greater
1:07:27
than
1:07:28
i don't know three weeks two weeks even
1:07:31
richie will tell you this
1:07:32
uh we get two three weeks off i'll say
1:07:35
richie when you get back when you land
1:07:36
give me a call
1:07:37
gets on what's up and then we're like
1:07:39
i'm like alright you got three weeks
1:07:41
which what's
1:07:42
what's the what's what's it like around
1:07:44
home well it's it's
1:07:45
crappy weather it's you know i'm kind of
1:07:48
tired of the mountain bike right now
1:07:49
okay well let's smash it with some power
1:07:51
work or hey i really want to spend some
1:07:53
time on the bike in colorado
1:07:54
all right well let's just focus on
1:07:56
something that you can do
1:07:58
that will complement all that riding so
1:08:00
maybe some mobility work
1:08:02
maybe some uh movements that are less
1:08:05
demanding so that you can put some
1:08:07
energy on the bike but still be training
1:08:09
so again moving target um
1:08:12
a lot of variables right and how did you
1:08:15
handle last year
1:08:16
with kovid you said before that there
1:08:18
was 14
1:08:19
phases i think you said last year tell
1:08:22
us a little bit about the difficulties
1:08:23
you faced
1:08:24
with covered and the uncertainty
1:08:28
richie i think that's for you um
1:08:32
yeah i mean i think i enjoy
1:08:36
training enough that like um
1:08:39
i like doing i mean having the year kind
1:08:42
of like off except for
1:08:43
i think did three or four races i don't
1:08:46
know remember
1:08:47
really but um yeah i think the tough
1:08:50
thing is like not having that
1:08:51
goal really to like to push for is tough
1:08:54
but
1:08:55
i kind of enjoy the training bit of it
1:08:58
so
1:08:58
like we all and um
1:09:02
like not be able to go to the gym i got
1:09:04
like a
1:09:06
oh i got like a bar and weights so we
1:09:08
did a little bit more like
1:09:10
that style training a bit over the
1:09:12
summer so i kind of kept it fresh and
1:09:14
kept it interesting
1:09:16
that was kind of nice actually it um so
1:09:19
they didn't like burn me out too much
1:09:20
with
1:09:21
training and stuff so i actually i guess
1:09:24
quite enjoyed it
1:09:25
um definitely had some weeks were like
1:09:27
pretty unmotivated didn't
1:09:29
i guess like feel like pushing that hard
1:09:31
but um todd also created some little
1:09:33
challenges within like the performance
1:09:35
group we have
1:09:36
so i kept things you know exciting when
1:09:39
you didn't exactly feel like doing a
1:09:41
bunch of stuff
1:09:42
cool nice so
1:09:46
coming on to age a little bit um
1:09:49
in the dh environment other than
1:09:51
obviously menard
1:09:52
it seems like there's kind of a little
1:09:54
bit of a cut off around the age of 30
1:09:57
um in terms of that like winning the
1:10:00
races
1:10:01
we think p is the only person to be
1:10:03
world champion after the age of 30
1:10:05
in the downhill scene but obviously sam
1:10:07
hill won
1:10:08
back-to-back ews titles over the age of
1:10:11
30.
1:10:12
todd how do you think age affects the
1:10:15
the training and the different
1:10:16
disciplines what what would you say to
1:10:18
that
1:10:20
i don't know i think in general it's the
1:10:22
same rules apply that
1:10:24
apply to life um you know are you
1:10:27
is motivated when you're you know you
1:10:30
know like what what's
1:10:31
what's the human experience right like
1:10:34
we leave school and we want to be on our
1:10:36
own and
1:10:37
you know we want to buy a house i guess
1:10:39
i don't know not everybody
1:10:40
i don't think it's for everybody but you
1:10:42
you know you put a shelter and you
1:10:45
get a family maybe i mean i i don't have
1:10:47
kids but i've
1:10:48
always been surrounded by them and the
1:10:50
steams and the sports and
1:10:52
and i think your goals change with time
1:10:55
over life or like you don't
1:10:57
your ambition levels change like i don't
1:10:59
know about you jack with your business
1:11:01
and stuff and
1:11:02
what you've done i can't say it's just
1:11:04
completely
1:11:05
based on edge like i've been more
1:11:08
focused this last
1:11:09
couple years on my business and i
1:11:11
haven't 25 some years we're working on
1:11:13
our online training and
1:11:15
i mean i can i don't know i've just got
1:11:17
more energy for it because i'm more
1:11:19
determined
1:11:20
and it's like you know back in the day
1:11:22
you're working you're grinding you're
1:11:23
doing stuff handing people your business
1:11:24
card because you
1:11:26
you want to put whatever maybe you want
1:11:27
to put money in the count maybe you want
1:11:29
to
1:11:30
show people you're capable of maybe it's
1:11:31
your ego maybe it's your
1:11:33
this and that so maybe once you're
1:11:34
younger it's like i don't know some
1:11:36
people talk about also like
1:11:37
ignorance being bliss right like you
1:11:39
don't get hurt you don't you yeah
1:11:41
how many guys dude i'm like that cat vet
1:11:44
class motocross guy what's the
1:11:46
most famous thing you hear old dudes say
1:11:47
about young guys like
1:11:49
well i gotta go to work on monday you
1:11:51
know it's like so in other words young
1:11:53
guys are
1:11:53
not having to work so they're reckless
1:11:55
and they're some would say stupid or
1:11:57
something you use these really
1:11:59
ignorant words but it's i i don't agree
1:12:01
with that i think
1:12:03
the 17 year old doesn't want to hurt as
1:12:05
much on monday as
1:12:06
as the is the you know 47 year old i
1:12:09
don't believe that's just that
1:12:10
that's the ego it's talking yeah but i
1:12:12
do think
1:12:13
the younger person um hasn't
1:12:17
you know gone through those emotional
1:12:20
rollercoasters
1:12:21
of of of life and of
1:12:24
injury and i'm trying to achieve and
1:12:28
i see these younger athletes and i think
1:12:30
they're just ambition level but then you
1:12:32
get
1:12:32
if you can balance that with the
1:12:34
experience right like you said moment
1:12:37
where you see in his eyes like i spent
1:12:39
some time even with greg
1:12:41
uh last year year before at marshy's
1:12:44
place in
1:12:45
france and still his determination like
1:12:48
dude day after velda's soul you know day
1:12:51
after velda soul and everybody just
1:12:52
wants to get the hell out of there
1:12:54
and um you know and get home and
1:12:57
whatever it is we are all on the road
1:12:58
for a while
1:12:59
and he's dragging marshy out to the
1:13:02
track on monday morning
1:13:03
in the bloody rain and a really
1:13:05
destroyed horrible
1:13:06
what black snake track you know it's
1:13:08
like i'll never forget that experience
1:13:10
whatever that was like three four five
1:13:12
years ago
1:13:13
and like is that anything to do with age
1:13:16
that's just that's just determination
1:13:19
that's
1:13:20
yeah that's ambition that's you know
1:13:23
whatever motivates greg you know and for
1:13:26
him to go out there and
1:13:27
do that on a monday where i didn't know
1:13:30
a lot of
1:13:30
17 year olds that asked to go do that
1:13:33
you know and
1:13:34
18 years old so to me that's what
1:13:38
i don't know if it's age i i i you know
1:13:40
and age they say age is a number or
1:13:42
whatever it is
1:13:45
are you training riders differently todd
1:13:47
so say for example i think aaron's
1:13:49
probably a good example to use here
1:13:50
i think he's a year older than me so i
1:13:52
think he's 33.
1:13:54
yes do you look for different things in
1:13:56
his training now
1:13:57
that you like you know differently to
1:14:00
when he was saying 25 like
1:14:03
did you find writers
1:14:07
yeah absolutely you know why because
1:14:10
we're just gonna i don't want to forget
1:14:11
this goes back to what i just mentioned
1:14:13
before i literally start with aaron and
1:14:15
say
1:14:17
what level what level the where are you
1:14:20
aiming like where are you aiming in your
1:14:23
racing right now and aaron's
1:14:24
incredible at being able to look at life
1:14:28
and racing i've honestly every one of
1:14:31
these guys
1:14:32
you included jack like guys that have
1:14:34
other you know
1:14:35
other lives and jobs and i'm always just
1:14:38
super impressed and inspired by all you
1:14:40
guys
1:14:40
but it's amazing how
1:14:44
the i feel like the successful ones know
1:14:47
they can't do it all you know they they
1:14:51
and the ones that fool themselves that
1:14:53
they can are the ones that just
1:14:54
get more frustrated and like
1:14:58
if you know that like aaron just knew it
1:15:00
like i'm gonna
1:15:01
start a race team um i'm gonna get
1:15:04
married
1:15:05
i could find a girl and i'm gonna build
1:15:06
this house and
1:15:08
and he's like okay so that means i'm
1:15:11
gonna have to probably
1:15:13
find a new balance for the time being
1:15:15
and i'm not gonna be the aaron gwynne
1:15:18
of six years ago five years and again
1:15:20
aaron and i have been together eight
1:15:21
years
1:15:22
um it's a different aaron and you know
1:15:25
somebody from the outside world would
1:15:26
watch him and they'd say well wait a
1:15:27
second is he getting lazy is he getting
1:15:29
getting is he getting behind is he no
1:15:32
he's
1:15:34
he's much uh more honest with himself
1:15:37
that that and he's just like nope this
1:15:39
is where i'll i'll put myself
1:15:41
this year while i get these things
1:15:43
checked off
1:15:44
and even him it's not like we all know
1:15:46
the perfect balance he's learning it
1:15:48
and i we already chatted about next year
1:15:50
and he's like well these few boxes are
1:15:52
pretty checked they got me oh
1:15:53
i got me a wife i got my house built i
1:15:56
got the team
1:15:58
um hopefully covered behind us a bit and
1:16:00
it's like
1:16:01
okay i got some space and that space is
1:16:04
not just
1:16:06
it's not just time on the schedule
1:16:09
it's space in your mind it's it's energy
1:16:12
it's
1:16:13
i'm not going to get all spiritual here
1:16:14
on you but there's a lot of
1:16:16
variables and the guys that really get
1:16:18
that i mean i've talked this about minar
1:16:20
and minar said it like
1:16:21
one time to me it's like you gotta
1:16:23
create
1:16:24
you gotta create that balance and space
1:16:26
in your life
1:16:28
and um i think the real the good ones
1:16:30
they learn that
1:16:31
you can only do so much can't you
1:16:33
there's only so many hours in the day
1:16:34
and you can only focus on so many things
1:16:36
and
1:16:37
to be at the very top of anything it has
1:16:40
to be your
1:16:41
i imagine i don't know if i've ever been
1:16:44
at the very top of anything
1:16:45
richie you've been at the very top
1:16:49
do you think you're you've you've won
1:16:51
the enduro world series a couple of
1:16:53
times
1:16:54
endurance sports i remember i did a
1:16:57
couple of 24-hour races a few
1:16:59
a long time ago and the world champion i
1:17:02
think was in his 40s at that time
1:17:05
enduro do you think you can still get
1:17:08
better
1:17:09
you're 25 now yeah i mean i think
1:17:12
there's still
1:17:14
i think there's still a ton of room to
1:17:15
improve i mean
1:17:17
i always feel like those areas and
1:17:19
training or just in writing in general
1:17:20
that
1:17:21
yeah could get better and obviously
1:17:23
seeing sam like
1:17:25
he still schools us all and it's like
1:17:28
you know
1:17:29
and jared like he wasn't yet young
1:17:32
either when he won his title so it's
1:17:34
like
1:17:34
there's clearly like a lot of time left
1:17:37
to
1:17:38
you know do you feel a bit like if you
1:17:40
were in the world of downhill you'd kind
1:17:42
of be
1:17:43
at your peak now but do you feel a bit
1:17:45
like in the world of enduro are you
1:17:47
still on the way up
1:17:49
yeah i would think so and i think as
1:17:52
long as you're willing you're willing to
1:17:53
take that risk and
1:17:54
well not east like every there should be
1:17:57
like no reason why you couldn't
1:17:59
you know keep improving i guess yeah
1:18:03
so todd you've worked with loads of
1:18:05
riders obviously we've we've
1:18:07
named quite a few of them tonight a
1:18:09
couple of tricky questions for you um
1:18:12
who would you say is the most natural
1:18:14
athlete you've worked with
1:18:17
so not naturally talented natural
1:18:19
athlete
1:18:21
well you know jack it's such a tricky
1:18:24
one because i'll be trying to figure out
1:18:25
what is athlete right what is athletic
1:18:28
um who's got like you know checking
1:18:30
those boxes that i've worked with
1:18:32
like i i always see like i'll go outside
1:18:35
of the people i've worked with
1:18:37
and you look at like bernie and you see
1:18:39
a body type
1:18:40
and you see those strong hips and legs
1:18:42
that i think you guys were taught we
1:18:44
were talking about genetics a little bit
1:18:45
of body type
1:18:46
you just see how maybe this stuff works
1:18:48
its way to the top i spent time with
1:18:50
amary
1:18:51
last year amory was at retalic lodge
1:18:54
rode mountain bikes with us for four
1:18:56
days
1:18:56
and just eating breakfast with him and
1:18:57
hanging out with him and shooting the
1:18:59
[ __ ] and laughing and stuff
1:19:01
it was great to see him and how he works
1:19:02
and i've never known like long enough
1:19:04
because he used to be really good
1:19:05
friends with
1:19:06
you know or he is good friends with uh
1:19:08
blinky with sam lincolnsoft who was on
1:19:10
our team for
1:19:12
lots of years and i trained him for five
1:19:14
six years
1:19:16
and so watching how he works um
1:19:19
so there's some real athletic like the
1:19:21
guys at the top
1:19:23
they all got their strengths and
1:19:24
weaknesses for sure but
1:19:26
most of its strengths i'd say that
1:19:29
i know like hard-working
1:19:33
um hard blinking
1:19:36
sam lincoln's up um when it comes to
1:19:39
being
1:19:39
let's say an athlete or athletic
1:19:42
like i mean and i think to be honest and
1:19:45
i i say this when he's sitting beside me
1:19:48
probably by um where it hurts him at
1:19:52
some point like he he just
1:19:53
he's like he never stops like that guy
1:19:56
will do the work that guy will ride that
1:19:57
guy well
1:19:58
i i've i was at his place and i'm not
1:20:01
[ __ ] you
1:20:02
and marcelo gutierrez and again i'm not
1:20:04
throwing anybody on the fence
1:20:05
but it's like culture right culture
1:20:08
marcelo is
1:20:09
one of the most i trained marcelo and i
1:20:11
had him
1:20:12
and i had blinky at the same place and
1:20:14
i'm looking at
1:20:16
um marcelo and this is naturally
1:20:20
genetically strong and fit you know we
1:20:22
always hear about his lungs from being
1:20:24
at high altitude probably in the way he
1:20:26
was just born and
1:20:27
his training all those things making
1:20:30
this
1:20:30
real great athlete but he's that
1:20:31
blinkies in the backyard
1:20:33
and you know he gets up and comes out
1:20:36
and has his coffee you know colombian
1:20:38
you know has his coffee and sitting down
1:20:39
he's got his little slippers on
1:20:41
and he's like sam we should do something
1:20:43
this morning sam's like already built
1:20:45
the fence in my backyard
1:20:47
uh i went surfing um you went surfing
1:20:51
he's like yeah i went surfing for an
1:20:52
hour
1:20:53
and a half i was gone for an hour and a
1:20:54
half i built that back fence right there
1:20:56
this is by like 10 o'clock in the
1:20:57
morning colombian style you know what i
1:20:59
mean and he's
1:21:00
and and i've walked the dog and now you
1:21:03
want to go to the gym
1:21:05
marcel says you're going to go to the
1:21:06
gymnasium go to the gym and they go back
1:21:08
and they came back and they went
1:21:09
downhill riding and
1:21:10
at the end of the night blinky wanted to
1:21:11
go climb to the top of
1:21:13
some hornet peak i think it was to go
1:21:15
look at the
1:21:16
the landscape and stuff and i was just
1:21:18
like like
1:21:20
you know so driven uh loves to move
1:21:24
loves to be physical yes um
1:21:28
it's it's uh so the athlete is
1:21:32
you know if a guy who's willing to put
1:21:34
in the time blinky
1:21:35
um attention to detail guy
1:21:39
um towards the end stevie smith
1:21:42
like well that's in that season didn't
1:21:45
it
1:21:46
he was like what i saw from the
1:21:48
beginning which was this guy that just
1:21:50
wanted to go
1:21:51
to the bar and stand up and kick
1:21:53
people's teeth out and then
1:21:54
you know seriously like that part and
1:21:57
then you know eat nachos and drink beer
1:21:59
and hang out with darren burklaw
1:22:00
to this guy at the end of his you know
1:22:04
towards the end of our relationship and
1:22:06
unfortunately
1:22:07
in life for him um i'll never forget
1:22:10
when he was at my house
1:22:11
with my wife and i and it was the year
1:22:14
like
1:22:14
we we set a plan i'm not gonna anybody
1:22:17
knows me and
1:22:18
knows the red bull guys will call me out
1:22:19
in this when i started with them
1:22:21
i said he's gonna win the world cup
1:22:22
series in five years and on the fifth
1:22:23
year he won it
1:22:25
and um we said that i saw this
1:22:28
constant thing happening and the fifth
1:22:30
year is at my house and i never forget
1:22:32
on sunday i made a bunch of pancakes
1:22:35
best quality pancakes belt flour blah
1:22:38
blah blah
1:22:38
and i said sunday you know fun day right
1:22:41
sunday relax day you know like mostly
1:22:42
athletes and myself i love it right
1:22:44
and uh i said hey you know put this a
1:22:47
little bit like
1:22:48
country butter on these things that's
1:22:50
really good this morning and i got this
1:22:52
maple syrup that
1:22:53
one of my athletes gave me from quebec
1:22:55
and he was just like
1:22:57
um i get while i'm having the pancakes
1:22:59
and the nuts and seeds and all the
1:23:00
things but
1:23:01
why the sugar right syrup and why the
1:23:04
butter
1:23:05
and i said tastes good and he's it's fun
1:23:08
day
1:23:08
he's like yeah but if you can't convince
1:23:10
me it's going to do anything for me to
1:23:12
make me better on my bike right now
1:23:14
i have no interest in it i'll just eat
1:23:16
the pancakes and the nuts
1:23:18
and that wasn't a [ __ ] statement he
1:23:20
was constantly like this in his last
1:23:21
year
1:23:22
he constantly wanted to do something
1:23:24
better
1:23:25
than and you know who will tell you that
1:23:27
is brooke mcdonald brooke will tell you
1:23:29
they were filming
1:23:30
when they were filming with the anthill
1:23:32
boys and he was staying in his little
1:23:33
tent and not only did he have his little
1:23:35
business running really good he was
1:23:36
organized with gabe he had all his bikes
1:23:38
in the line
1:23:39
his tent was perfect he had all the
1:23:41
snacks he had all supplements
1:23:43
he was not going to go filming out with
1:23:44
a certain hours of sleep
1:23:46
like the attention to detail in that
1:23:49
last year so
1:23:50
does that make him an incredible athlete
1:23:53
yeah um you know otherwise we all know
1:23:58
mr richard rude here i mean
1:24:01
is he the strongest athlete uh you know
1:24:05
i've worked with absolutely uh does he
1:24:07
have the greatest
1:24:08
mobility which most people would be
1:24:11
surprised if you've seen the dude's
1:24:12
flexibility
1:24:13
um it's mind-blowing and um
1:24:17
you'd think you know because he's big
1:24:18
and heavy wouldn't have this endurance
1:24:20
well
1:24:21
two-time champ will tell you otherwise
1:24:23
and so
1:24:24
you know jack is i you know i know how
1:24:26
hard working you are
1:24:28
you balance what do you got four kids
1:24:30
now
1:24:31
oh no no kids no i know i'm just kidding
1:24:34
i know you don't have kids but you got
1:24:35
your business you got you're running a
1:24:36
race team you're out there world cupping
1:24:38
i've seen you
1:24:38
crack the top positions sometimes and
1:24:41
it's like
1:24:44
pretty amazing it's easy when you love
1:24:46
it though um
1:24:47
so based off what you just said about
1:24:49
richie there richie have you got a good
1:24:51
kind of natural drive for the training
1:24:53
or sometimes todd are you having to be
1:24:54
on the phone going hey
1:24:56
put the put the tea down get in the gym
1:25:01
yeah i mean i feel like i have a natural
1:25:03
drive for it
1:25:04
at least i like to think so i mean yeah
1:25:07
yeah i always
1:25:08
like to try and push myself for
1:25:12
you know trying to be a little better so
1:25:14
yeah i feel like it's always there
1:25:16
yeah i guess we're training for a reason
1:25:18
right so it's easy to uh
1:25:20
easy to do it um just like just let
1:25:23
sam beat him if
1:25:38
or or jesse beat him there's a ton of
1:25:41
motivation you should see
1:25:42
him then you should see him the next
1:25:44
month or two you gotta like
1:25:45
pipe them yeah like like it was my third
1:25:48
race this
1:25:49
season last year and casper beat me i
1:25:51
was like oh
1:25:53
just
1:25:56
he was yeah it was like game on so it's
1:25:58
like whatever depends on what
1:26:00
what what what pokes him in the ass i
1:26:02
guess
1:26:04
cool i think i'll skip that one george
1:26:06
because i think
1:26:07
we've covered that one let's talk about
1:26:09
diet for a minute because richie
1:26:11
i believe you love an ice cream or seven
1:26:14
um
1:26:15
what do you find more difficult the diet
1:26:16
or the training
1:26:18
um i died i guess
1:26:22
yeah yeah i can you know as
1:26:26
you know i train and stuff i also
1:26:28
probably eat the same so
1:26:30
yeah uh yeah i've been the same weight
1:26:34
for a long time and drained a ton so
1:26:37
you can afford that i guess
1:26:40
todd let's talk about someone like me
1:26:42
fabulous intentions but
1:26:44
as you've just you've just said about
1:26:45
jacob and four kids i've got two kids
1:26:47
i've got a business i've got a lot of
1:26:48
distractions
1:26:50
is it too late for this season now for
1:26:52
me
1:26:53
big part of me wants you to say yes
1:26:56
no his only aim is to get
1:26:59
look at his bike so where would you
1:27:02
where would you
1:27:03
where should i start um going into the
1:27:06
forest and having a conversation with
1:27:08
yourself that's the first place
1:27:11
you know don't do it in your house
1:27:12
because you look you'll look like you're
1:27:13
mental hey
1:27:14
in the forest on my own having a
1:27:16
conversation it'd be the only time that
1:27:18
i get some silence
1:27:19
there you go go out there man and and
1:27:22
and pretend you're sitting in front of
1:27:23
you know yoda and have yourself a real
1:27:26
deep conversation and
1:27:28
um decide what it is that you know
1:27:31
you know you're you're aiming at i mean
1:27:33
it's the same thing i do with my
1:27:34
my business this last few years it's
1:27:36
like am i willing to go we've been
1:27:37
filming this
1:27:38
online training um starting at 9 00 p.m
1:27:40
at night
1:27:41
and filming till 4 a.m trust me i'm like
1:27:44
sitting here some days working on
1:27:45
richie's
1:27:46
programs and everybody else's and you
1:27:48
know and getting the team ready and i'm
1:27:49
like
1:27:50
ugh let's go make a coffee right now and
1:27:52
get ready to go but if you're determined
1:27:55
you know if you're determined and this
1:27:56
is what you and is it because i wanna
1:27:59
you know is it because i want a bigger
1:28:00
house no i'm actually
1:28:02
just really interested in seeing what
1:28:04
i'm capable of with this business i'm
1:28:06
actually just
1:28:07
i've had no expectation i don't think
1:28:08
this is any different than an
1:28:10
athlete trying to achieve um something
1:28:12
and i have maybe
1:28:13
maybe his heart issues this health
1:28:16
issues
1:28:16
have underlined some things in my life
1:28:19
i've actually
1:28:19
not george i've i've not trained
1:28:22
properly
1:28:23
at 52 fully full disclosure
1:28:27
in almost 10 to 12 years and uh way
1:28:30
before richie
1:28:31
and i've always put my my efforts first
1:28:33
and i kind of fit myself in
1:28:35
after and that's a good excuse to not do
1:28:36
the work because you're like
1:28:38
these guys are a bigger priority they
1:28:39
pay the bills and i can tell myself that
1:28:41
till i'm blue in the face
1:28:42
um this last year
1:28:46
i don't do that um i actually think
1:28:49
there's days where i do more than richie
1:28:50
right now
1:28:51
and i'll i'll get on them and i've done
1:28:54
more of the yoga and the stretching
1:28:55
recently than you
1:28:56
actually i don't mind checking out live
1:28:59
because
1:28:59
um you know i've been last night i i was
1:29:02
like working on our
1:29:03
online stuff and you know what i just
1:29:05
stopped at 9 30 at night and i was like
1:29:07
nope that's it i'll do this more in the
1:29:09
morning and i did a yoga session from
1:29:11
9 45 to 10 30 um
1:29:14
at night and i'm not a good night person
1:29:16
like i typically need to go to bed by
1:29:18
nine but i like being up at five or six
1:29:20
a.m
1:29:21
so you know it just depends on i've had
1:29:23
that chat with myself in the forest dude
1:29:26
and um so i want to be i want to be
1:29:29
better i want i want to be my best
1:29:30
motocrosser
1:29:31
so this year i want to be if it's not
1:29:34
this year because
1:29:35
you know travel restrictions and all
1:29:36
that stuff i want to go back to the
1:29:38
world vet motocross and i want to have
1:29:40
my best finish
1:29:41
ever in world vet motocross in
1:29:43
california and i want to have
1:29:44
my best ews finish which i've got
1:29:48
i got a 24th in
1:29:52
uh finale in the plus in the old man
1:29:54
class
1:29:55
so so so when are you launching the
1:29:58
online training
1:30:00
uh we're hoping in the next four
1:30:03
within the next four weeks and i kind of
1:30:05
set that because it just depends on how
1:30:06
it goes with
1:30:07
the hardest thing is we're back a little
1:30:09
bit because of covid and the closures at
1:30:11
the gym
1:30:12
and i'm using the gym and hence to meet
1:30:14
the restrictions i have to go at 9am pm
1:30:16
at night
1:30:17
so we have to go film and use my
1:30:19
athletes and
1:30:21
richie will tell you i mean the one
1:30:24
thing it's
1:30:25
to me it's just i have to do something
1:30:27
right like i can't
1:30:28
i'm really not good at just the in
1:30:30
between the gray zone so
1:30:32
i'm just being so strict like i am with
1:30:35
the training protocol
1:30:36
um in this filming the extra i mean i've
1:30:39
repeated we've i've seen the i've seen
1:30:41
and we've got a great videographer um
1:30:44
from pink bike chris ricci who used to
1:30:46
be now he's with
1:30:47
and so like i'll watch the video and
1:30:49
i'll be like nope
1:30:50
back is a little rounded shoulders
1:30:52
aren't back enough that's not going out
1:30:54
and so let's go back we got to film this
1:30:56
again and
1:30:57
it's costing time and money but you know
1:31:00
it's
1:31:00
really important to me so um
1:31:04
yeah nice richie there's a couple of
1:31:07
things i can't let you go without asking
1:31:08
about the first is downhill
1:31:11
yeah in winning gold in 2013 you beat a
1:31:15
field that included loris vergier
1:31:17
dean lucas lucas shaw mark wallace
1:31:21
given how well those guys have
1:31:22
subsequently done in the downhill arena
1:31:24
plus seeing martin mayes win a world cup
1:31:27
do you ever
1:31:28
wonder what if and have you been tempted
1:31:30
to return to the world cups at all
1:31:32
i mean i love enduro racing i think
1:31:35
that's kind of
1:31:36
my thing but um yeah i mean i'd
1:31:38
definitely be tempted to try race here
1:31:40
and there i think
1:31:42
i think it'd be fun like i think with
1:31:44
endura racing like
1:31:47
you're such in that mindset of going
1:31:48
fast and you're on your line and stuff
1:31:50
and
1:31:51
but like there's sometimes those like
1:31:53
couple of stages where like three to
1:31:55
four minutes long and just like you
1:31:58
always just feel so much more focused
1:31:59
and
1:32:01
yeah i think it'd be fun to try like a
1:32:03
downer race
1:32:04
but at the same time it's like i also
1:32:06
would want to do
1:32:07
well and i probably want to like be on
1:32:10
down a bike for a month or two
1:32:11
beforehand
1:32:12
just because i know like how much those
1:32:15
guys send it and
1:32:17
i feel like i feel like i do send on
1:32:19
enduro bike but it's definitely like
1:32:20
brought back
1:32:21
by you know 10 sometimes
1:32:24
yeah you get on like a proper down track
1:32:27
an enduro bike and you feel
1:32:28
lost so yeah i think it'd be it'd be
1:32:31
cool
1:32:32
is there any way you could get like a
1:32:34
shot at worlds or something like that or
1:32:36
is it is it more you
1:32:38
you personally
1:32:41
um not having that being able to do that
1:32:43
commitment to doing it
1:32:46
yeah i think just having the time to
1:32:47
like um do a couple races here and there
1:32:50
and
1:32:51
uh at least be able to make it to get
1:32:54
chosen but i think then it's like
1:32:57
if you do get chosen then it's like well
1:32:59
would you rather have somebody who's
1:33:00
been
1:33:00
running downhill all year take the spot
1:33:03
over you so
1:33:04
i'd probably just try a random world cup
1:33:06
if i could get in
1:33:08
for the uh people listening uh todd is
1:33:11
holding up a piece of paper that says wc
1:33:13
2022 and i don't know whether it means
1:33:15
world cups 2022 or whether it means
1:33:17
world championships 2022.
1:33:20
i don't know what you're talking about i
1:33:21
just want a banana right here
1:33:24
the second thing is the doping
1:33:26
infraction in 2018 and i'm not going to
1:33:28
go into the who
1:33:29
what how as i think it is
1:33:33
well i wanted to ask more what what
1:33:35
effect did it have
1:33:36
on you as an athlete and how did you
1:33:38
deal with it
1:33:40
um i guess i almost feel like it's a lot
1:33:43
like
1:33:44
how we dealt with this year with covet
1:33:46
and everything it's kind of like
1:33:47
something just gets
1:33:48
thrown at you and you don't really know
1:33:51
what to do i guess
1:33:52
and um yeah and then like with not being
1:33:55
able to race it was definitely weird to
1:33:57
try and
1:33:58
like um i don't know get motivated to
1:34:01
train and stuff but i think like the one
1:34:05
nice thing about like kind of
1:34:08
having the time off i guess is i kind of
1:34:11
rode my bike and enjoyed it
1:34:12
a lot more and just kind of like watched
1:34:15
the races and
1:34:16
yeah um i went to squamish for i think a
1:34:19
month or so and
1:34:20
really enjoyed that and so it was
1:34:23
yeah so it was kind of good in that
1:34:25
aspect but not a good situation at all
1:34:28
no for sure with hindsight was would you
1:34:31
have handled the
1:34:32
that time period any differently looking
1:34:34
back on it or
1:34:35
did you looking back do you think it
1:34:37
played out pretty much how it could have
1:34:38
done and
1:34:39
that was that yeah i think it played out
1:34:41
pretty good
1:34:42
like got some good like time at todd's
1:34:44
and
1:34:45
uh me and my girlfriend went to europe
1:34:47
for like two weeks and just traveled
1:34:49
around so
1:34:50
yeah got some time to do stuff yeah the
1:34:53
best of a bad situation like did you
1:34:55
find yourself being more cautious about
1:34:57
stuff now or
1:34:59
have you not really needed to change
1:35:00
anything with regard to anyone
1:35:03
i was always pretty cautious but yeah
1:35:05
now now
1:35:07
like super cautious yeah now you're on
1:35:09
high alert i can imagine
1:35:11
um so obviously you return to the uws's
1:35:13
in 2019
1:35:15
um returned at round four won that one
1:35:17
and the next
1:35:18
um that must have been pretty satisfying
1:35:21
i imagine
1:35:23
yeah or did eddie win the second one
1:35:27
george is giving me the start if i'm not
1:35:29
i thought i thought you won did you not
1:35:30
win the first two and then a third or
1:35:32
something like that
1:35:34
i think i got second and then one the
1:35:36
third i don't know
1:35:37
yeah but yeah like coming back to that
1:35:40
race in italy i
1:35:42
was like oh you know if i get top 20
1:35:44
i'll be stoked you know
1:35:46
yeah and then um you know my teammate
1:35:48
sean was
1:35:49
telling me like dude you're you're going
1:35:52
fast like i know when you say this stuff
1:35:53
you're
1:35:54
actually confident with yourself so yeah
1:35:56
yeah i was stuck with that like i
1:35:57
couldn't ask for anything better
1:35:59
just i think like not having like
1:36:02
the idea of a championship or anything
1:36:04
in my head was
1:36:05
it just like gave me the mindset just
1:36:08
like go out have fun
1:36:09
just push yourself and see what happens
1:36:11
and yeah i think i won the first stage
1:36:13
and
1:36:14
i like tried to like keep my cool and
1:36:15
just be like all right well just you
1:36:17
know just
1:36:17
keep going on and nice so yeah i was
1:36:21
definitely need to to win that and just
1:36:23
feel so much better about
1:36:25
you know come back to racing nice one
1:36:27
thing we haven't asked you actually
1:36:29
which i'd be interested to know why did
1:36:31
you choose not to race in 2020 on the
1:36:33
uws
1:36:35
um i think we had some like national
1:36:38
stuff
1:36:38
that we could we could have done like we
1:36:40
did some of the bme stuff
1:36:42
yeah you know colorado and montana and
1:36:44
then
1:36:45
i think as a team we just decided that
1:36:48
we would just let it go for this year
1:36:50
and okay you know not having to do it
1:36:52
um going over to europe and stuff so
1:36:55
also it was a whole yeti program that
1:36:56
didn't go
1:36:58
yeah so yeah team stayed in colorado and
1:37:02
uh race there yeah yeah i think it was
1:37:04
online
1:37:05
sorry yeah i think it was just like
1:37:08
as a yeah as a team we decided that it
1:37:11
was just safer to stay home
1:37:13
for sure and you planned on lining up
1:37:15
this year in june
1:37:17
yeah ready to go cool well best of luck
1:37:20
todd i can't leave with asking about
1:37:22
your other job without asking about your
1:37:24
other job
1:37:25
as i mentioned in the intro you're the
1:37:27
intense factory racing team boss how are
1:37:29
things shaping up for 2021
1:37:32
maybe just before richie sneaks away i
1:37:34
just got one more question
1:37:38
six
1:37:43
todd's holding up face pepper and it
1:37:44
says richie rude six inch in the rear or
1:37:46
ten inch in the rear
1:37:49
that's the real question unreal
1:37:52
unreal go big bro
1:37:57
it's all i'm saying no i love richie's
1:38:00
i love richie enduro just so you don't
1:38:03
think i'm some like
1:38:05
only downhill fan i i think it's awesome
1:38:07
um
1:38:09
team wise yeah it's uh
1:38:12
it's uh we're all sitting and waiting
1:38:14
right now hey we're hoping um
1:38:16
everybody's prep i mean we just bumped
1:38:19
um i just told everybody we were
1:38:21
supposed to be i was supposed to be in
1:38:22
california with
1:38:23
richie and i were supposed to be the
1:38:24
team cam um so yeah two hats i wear
1:38:26
right one hat being the performance
1:38:28
trainer guy
1:38:29
and we were going to go down to pacifica
1:38:30
near santa cruz and we were all going to
1:38:32
ride so it was going to be
1:38:33
richie and i um aaron
1:38:36
gwen seth sherlock who's also on intense
1:38:39
factory racing
1:38:40
um paul sarah not on any of that you
1:38:43
know obviously him
1:38:44
and i also work with people not on the
1:38:46
obviously
1:38:47
intense factory racing team as was with
1:38:50
norco
1:38:50
and so on um and we were all going to go
1:38:53
down there and do training but we
1:38:54
canceled because it just
1:38:56
i could make it there um we can fly into
1:39:00
uh the us right now it's cool but i
1:39:03
don't know if it's cool it's a it's
1:39:05
that's a moving target as well it's like
1:39:07
yeah what's what's uh considered
1:39:10
um essential work and what's not so we
1:39:12
just
1:39:13
actually richie kind of made the
1:39:15
decision and i was like
1:39:17
dude do you feel like i mean going out
1:39:19
to the west coast and he was just like
1:39:21
um i don't think it's the right thing to
1:39:23
do right now so we all just said i agree
1:39:25
that's like yeah let's stay home
1:39:27
let's let's do the right thing and i
1:39:29
think that's the all of us
1:39:31
are in that dilemma um what's the right
1:39:33
thing to do
1:39:34
is what's essential what's work what
1:39:36
what's i think that's what the whole
1:39:38
planet is learning right now is the new
1:39:40
uh you know value so right now the teams
1:39:43
organized for a team camp uh
1:39:46
february 23rd
1:39:50
we're going to get together 23rd we're
1:39:51
getting down there we're planning to get
1:39:53
together with
1:39:54
intense um uh you know
1:39:57
typical things right get photos get some
1:39:59
video test our new bikes
1:40:02
uh we have uh
1:40:05
some stuff going on with dh so it's
1:40:06
pretty neat um
1:40:10
we've got seth the final piece of the
1:40:11
puzzle to get on the new 279
1:40:14
aaron's moving over to another new bike
1:40:18
which we can't say much about right now
1:40:21
but that's
1:40:22
pretty cool and then we've got down the
1:40:24
road we got some new trail bikes coming
1:40:26
too
1:40:26
so they're got lots going on which we
1:40:28
stay involved in
1:40:29
and i don't know where
1:40:33
oh yeah and we have um pretty cool thing
1:40:36
going on with ryan dungy
1:40:37
that's coming with us as well so it
1:40:38
should be pretty cool but just found out
1:40:41
but um yeah uh
1:40:44
i hope but we're starting to kind of
1:40:46
watch morning i get on here and see if
1:40:49
we're
1:40:49
if it's cool for us to travel and it
1:40:52
might just be a situation where actually
1:40:54
seth and i have to stay home
1:40:55
uh because sherlock is also in squamish
1:40:59
and again he's also a performance
1:41:01
athlete and an intense factory racing
1:41:04
uh team member and a rider and so um
1:41:07
yeah we look good we got all our i think
1:41:10
we've got
1:41:10
uh everything in place i was just
1:41:13
sitting here we just got a message for
1:41:15
shipments to europe we've got a sh we've
1:41:17
got a europe
1:41:18
address as well jack will tell you it's
1:41:21
a
1:41:22
there's a lot stuff to balance um yeah
1:41:26
and uh but it's it's pretty it's i don't
1:41:28
know i enjoy staying
1:41:30
busy so if that's the word yeah well
1:41:33
thanks very much to both of you for
1:41:34
making the time to come on the show
1:41:36
and best of luck to you both in in 2021
1:41:39
it's certainly been
1:41:40
enlightening for me to show us how much
1:41:41
out of my depth plan was particularly
1:41:43
when it comes to fitness uh
1:41:46
don't forget to keep an eye out for the
1:41:47
new performix online training available
1:41:49
as todd says in the next few weeks
1:41:51
is instagram the best place to uh keep
1:41:54
track
1:41:55
i think so i think get on instagram uh
1:41:58
performance training
1:41:59
and um just look me up there and then
1:42:02
you'll see the updates there and also
1:42:04
just people can send me a message and
1:42:05
i'll uh
1:42:06
i'll get them on my email list and um
1:42:09
you know just last if you don't mind
1:42:11
just guys just focus on
1:42:13
you know if there's anything i tried to
1:42:15
summarize with the training without
1:42:16
being too mysterious
1:42:18
just remember that
1:42:21
training isn't always um
1:42:24
is obvious and so i i hear people will
1:42:27
just
1:42:28
you know point at something and say
1:42:30
that's my fitness
1:42:31
because somebody out peddles you up a
1:42:33
hill doesn't make them a better
1:42:35
fitness that needs them better at
1:42:36
climbing up a hill than you it doesn't
1:42:38
necessarily make
1:42:40
them better than you at all your fitness
1:42:42
abilities so
1:42:43
hang on to your bike with your grip or
1:42:45
anything else so
1:42:46
be a little bit more open-minded about
1:42:48
what your fitness is than simply
1:42:50
lifting i know there was we were going
1:42:52
to chat about some stuff about even low
1:42:53
reps versus high reps and stuff
1:42:55
it's not it's all relevant everything is
1:42:58
based on a relevance of something so if
1:43:00
you're
1:43:00
if this sort of um if this kind of stuff
1:43:04
got you intrigued
1:43:04
and you're kind of wondering what i'm
1:43:06
kind of talking about i tell people send
1:43:08
me a message
1:43:09
i'll try and not be just mysterious i'm
1:43:11
trying with my instagram alone i i try
1:43:14
not to be just self-promotional i try
1:43:16
and use my instagram to try and
1:43:19
get people to think outside of the box
1:43:21
and make sure that they're
1:43:22
i try to give them something but still
1:43:24
not give away everything that the guys
1:43:26
who are paying for it
1:43:27
are getting it for free if that makes
1:43:29
any sense so
1:43:30
