hello and welcome to episode 10 of
0:40
season three of the pod it's been a busy
0:42
couple of months since the end of the
0:43
season but hopefully between now and the
0:45
end of the year we can get through some
0:46
of the podcasts we've promised because
0:48
this there's a lot stacking up jack i
0:50
think when we left off at the end of the
0:52
last episode you were heading over to
0:54
cassous for the third national of the
0:55
year that was a cracking weekend wasn't
0:57
it i think you ended up third
0:59
yeah it was may and obviously i've had a
1:01
tough season and coming back from the us
1:04
doing those two world cups with my
1:05
broken hand it was uh it was nice to go
1:08
to cassous and ride a short track in
1:10
good weather and and i wasn't expecting
1:12
to get a podium and came third in some
1:15
good company and give down a pace in
1:16
which he was due so
1:18
yeah it was a nice weekend for me and a
1:20
nice way to wrap up a very difficult
1:22
season
1:23
well i know in the uk we're not blessed
1:25
with the biggest hills but i i prefer it
1:27
when the race organizers don't try and
1:29
drag it out just to make the track last
1:31
longer i know it was only a 90-second
1:34
track for you a bit longer for me but it
1:36
was flat out from top to bottom and that
1:38
delivers some super tight racing what's
1:40
your thoughts on that do you do you
1:41
agree or do you would you prefer them to
1:44
have dragged it out a bit
1:45
no i'd much rather them go for quality
1:48
rather than quantity like
1:50
yeah it was a sick track it was more
1:51
like a sector or a world cup but who
1:54
cares like yeah
1:55
so fun the uplift was good mark
1:57
delivered a really good event obviously
1:59
the national series has been under quite
2:01
a lot of scrutiny over the last few
2:02
years and i still think they've got a
2:04
long way to go um
2:07
stinion was it was a joke um so yeah
2:10
there were a lot of things that weekend
2:11
that i personally was very unhappy with
2:14
as a rider and as a team you know team
2:16
manager um but kasoos they nailed it um
2:19
and yeah great track uh good weather
2:22
well organized so yeah don't drag it out
2:24
just give us what we want cool well from
2:26
there you went up to winners for the ews
2:29
which looked pretty horrific i think you
2:31
ended up 54
2:33
yeah it was just rain for four days it
2:36
was so cold um but i mean i had a good
2:39
weekend i was there with dan and
2:41
more importantly i was there with my
2:43
mate rob young shout out to rob everest
2:45
with rob for well since 2007 um and he
2:48
now just does a bit of this and a bit of
2:50
that and for the last few years he's
2:51
been doing an enduro and it was his
2:53
second dws but he he's basically an
2:55
indonesian local even though he lives in
2:57
leeds he goes there all the time yeah
2:59
so me and him we've kind of been doing a
3:02
lot of trash talk against each other in
3:03
the run-up to the event and
3:05
everybody kind of thought he was going
3:07
to give me a pasting and
3:09
i knew i had no chance if he stayed on
3:11
but rob loves crashing so
3:13
crashed his way through the first two or
3:15
three stages and i think i had an eight
3:16
second lead on him and then we went into
3:19
the last stage i think it was 0.7 apart
3:22
uh it was ridiculous how we kind of got
3:24
to that stage so close
3:26
but that last stage was the the stage on
3:28
the downhill side that was the pro stage
3:31
um and i give him a pasting on there so
3:33
he was 58 and i was 54th so we had a
3:36
good weekend having a bit of a banter i
3:38
mean those races are so hard and we're
3:40
going to be staying clear of them next
3:41
year and focusing on the downhills and
3:43
and some mega avalanche racing yeah i
3:45
mean i we'd done cassous probably the
3:47
week before and it was like built in
3:49
sunshine and dust and then i looked it i
3:51
i was just like
3:52
i was wasn't i didn't want to go in as
3:54
there's no there's no envy there that
3:56
weekend no if i wasn't having that
3:58
banter we're robbed there's absolutely
3:59
no way i would left me out
4:01
give us your opinion on the richie rude
4:03
disqualification though should have been
4:05
disqualified
4:06
um yeah um it's a tricky one i think in
4:10
the circumstances
4:13
maybe i do disqualification was a little
4:15
bit
4:16
um
4:17
i think the disqualification was the
4:19
correct move but i also think for the
4:21
fans and for the the racing element i
4:23
think a five ten second penalty or
4:25
whatever would have been a little bit
4:26
more appropriate so that then him and
4:28
jack could have had a bit of a bit of a
4:30
race maybe jack would have preferred
4:32
that i preferred that as well who knows
4:33
i mean i looked at that
4:36
from both a rider perspective and the
4:38
team manager perspective when i walked
4:40
it and i thought what are these ski
4:42
poles doing here do i need to go through
4:44
them and i looked and i was like well
4:45
yeah of course i need to go through them
4:47
otherwise they wouldn't be there um so
4:49
that was the decision i made as a rider
4:52
i then as a team manager went to dan and
4:54
said just so you know
4:56
make sure you go through go through
4:58
those those daft ski things that they've
5:01
put there in between the tape um
5:04
so i did my job as a team manager
5:07
i'm just i when it happened i was just
5:10
bemused by the fact that yeti as a team
5:14
didn't communicate to their riders just
5:16
so you guys are aware go through those
5:19
things like
5:20
i don't personally believe richie was
5:22
directly trying to cheat because it was
5:23
of everyone it was in front of the
5:25
commentator it was in front of the race
5:27
officials and it was in front of a crowd
5:29
so i don't believe he was actually
5:30
trying to cheat i think he just thought
5:32
that he could stay between the tape so
5:34
personally i think it was a race
5:36
organizer error not putting tape between
5:39
those things and
5:41
a team manager error from yeti's point
5:43
of view because there's a rider you're
5:44
just racing
5:46
um
5:46
and then it should be the team manager's
5:48
job there to say to his riders guys just
5:51
go through those so i think yeah
5:56
it was just things it shouldn't have
5:57
been allowed to happen
5:59
nah they should have it was a bit weird
6:01
they could have just taped
6:02
tipped to the poles so you didn't don't
6:06
yeah
6:07
well it's a bit bit like we've had the
6:08
formula one this weekend and those guys
6:11
have tried to encourage the race and not
6:13
stuck to the rules and then they've had
6:14
an amazingly you know final lap yeah but
6:17
this on this they stuck to the rules and
6:19
ruined the race really didn't they you
6:20
know like yeah
6:22
jack just took it so yeah
6:25
from there onto the you've just talked
6:27
about hunter final race of the season
6:30
your boy took the win
6:32
the only person to go under 225 all
6:35
weekend speed tucking down the final
6:37
straight he must be pumped
6:39
yeah he was pleased i was pleased with
6:42
you know as i said the event was a joke
6:44
um and then i snapped my chain at the
6:46
start yet in the finals run
6:48
um
6:50
and then
6:50
all of a sudden dan came down and won
6:52
and that was just meant like it it kind
6:54
of saved the weekend for for us really
6:57
it was absolutely ace to see him take
6:58
his first national win so so yeah he was
7:01
pleased we were pleased it was it was
7:03
great now i assured you it was a good
7:05
track
7:07
the track was all right the track wasn't
7:08
bad it was the way the event was
7:10
organized and i had a few problems with
7:12
some marshalls and some commencers and
7:14
um
7:15
i just think
7:16
obviously i race all over the world have
7:18
done for a very long time and when i
7:20
come home and go to british events quite
7:22
a lot of the time there's a lot of a lot
7:23
of things that in my opinion are just
7:26
comical um and i haven't even found it
7:28
within myself yet to go back to british
7:30
cycling and give them feedback
7:32
on the event because it's just
7:35
it's just stuff that's so obvious like
7:38
it's not happening in lots of other
7:40
countries it's not happening at world
7:41
cup so why are we getting marshals with
7:43
attitude problems and commissars without
7:46
issue problems and
7:48
so much
7:49
lack of continuity throughout the event
7:51
so so yeah um i'll digress but yeah i
7:54
thought the track was pretty good
7:56
well i think next season we've still got
7:58
several race organizers do you think it
8:01
it'd be better than if we if there was a
8:02
consistent one one team doing the whole
8:05
series
8:07
in my opinion
8:08
the problem is
8:11
there's too much [ __ ] in this
8:13
country for the race organizers to deal
8:16
with and too many health and safety
8:18
hoops and too many different people with
8:20
opinions and
8:22
too many people with clipboards um so
8:26
yeah i think
8:27
it's going to be very difficult for them
8:29
to sort out and make it so they are
8:31
delivering
8:32
a series that is
8:33
um
8:35
what should be an entry level series to
8:37
world cup racing which at the moment it
8:39
just isn't
8:40
um it's comical when you compare it to
8:42
other national series races in other
8:44
countries um
8:47
but yeah i mean they need to get it
8:49
sorted because through my gravity school
8:51
i'm seeing so much excitement and so
8:54
much talent coming through in terms of
8:56
downhill and young riders in this
8:58
country and they need a good series to
9:00
be racing in um
9:02
and at the moment it is not happening
9:04
and british cycling and the event
9:06
organizers need to sort it out the
9:08
venues
9:09
and
9:10
2022 look good um with rayola for
9:13
william langathlon um
9:16
revs
9:17
um
9:18
that's four good good long tracks and
9:20
then glencoe's national champs they've
9:21
got the venues to be able to deliver
9:23
that so
9:24
they need to sort themselves out i'm
9:26
excited to see sai payton come back and
9:28
deliver langolan um and hopefully um do
9:32
a really good job and set the benchmark
9:34
for the other organizers to aim for
9:35
again so
9:37
yeah it's very frustrating
9:39
excellent
9:40
so i try not to talk about my own
9:42
performance because generally the less
9:43
said the better but this race was
9:45
massive for me because i i finally beat
9:47
my teammate binzi we've been racing
9:49
together since 2013 40 races before this
9:52
one and i've never beaten him he's never
9:54
crashed never had a mechanical in all
9:56
that time it's incredible that really
9:58
when you're thinking about it 40 races
10:00
no mechanicals no crashes
10:02
there you go yeah congrats to binsy on
10:04
that one um and also congrats to
10:06
yourself like that's that's why that's
10:09
i've been getting closer pralut was the
10:11
closest i've been and then boom he
10:14
binned it on the shoot and
10:16
and i took the spoils but i've been at
10:18
revs with him since then he's already
10:20
been out and bought a session so i think
10:21
he's pretty fired up for next season and
10:23
ready to go nice
10:25
so since since then you you've had a
10:27
week sunning yourself in cape verde and
10:29
then back out to reunion island for the
10:31
mega
10:32
it's a tough life being a professional
10:34
sportsman in it oh yeah i'm exhausted eh
10:38
tell us a bit about omega then well yeah
10:40
cape verde was a week with a wife first
10:42
trip we've had away since before covered
10:44
so that was quite nice and then the mega
10:46
was a bit of a nice surprise and
10:48
it turns out if you podium at the mega
10:50
and outdoors they give you your flight
10:52
to reunion but because
10:54
they didn't tell us that this year
10:56
because they obviously didn't know if
10:57
they were going to happen
10:58
so i had no idea and i got an email
11:00
about
11:01
four weeks before the event um asking
11:04
you know if i wanted to go and they'd
11:05
pay for the flight so i spoke with sr
11:07
suntor and they said yep go out and
11:09
represent and film a vlog and
11:12
do the event so yeah went out and what a
11:14
place um
11:16
you know shout out to flopey who helped
11:18
us out he lives there and we did some
11:19
riding with him and yeah it's just
11:21
amazing it was uh it's a kind of a
11:24
tropical island so on the beach you've
11:26
got 30 degrees and sun but all you have
11:28
to do is go two miles inland and you get
11:30
a bit of cloud and the mountains go
11:31
straight up so it was up in the morning
11:34
for an hour and 20 minute drive up the
11:36
mountain and then a two-hour ride
11:38
sometimes longer if we did more than one
11:40
lap
11:41
and then we'll be on the beach by
11:42
lunchtime so it was uh it was a one of
11:45
them one of my favorite ever
11:47
you see why yeah cause i can see why
11:49
yeah with a hell of a suntan and uh and
11:52
and the race for the race was tough like
11:54
i'd recommend the event to anyone but
11:57
just be aware it's more like a
11:58
cross-country race there was so much
12:00
pedaling um i did i did enjoy it and um
12:04
i was surprised to come eighth
12:05
especially from the fourth row because i
12:06
had a puncture in my qualifying so i was
12:08
really pleased to get top 10 and round
12:10
out the season so it's good cool so
12:13
that's the 2020 race season wrapped up
12:15
we'll be back with world champs silver
12:16
medalist and the 2020 and 2021 freshman
12:19
french national downhill champion benoit
12:21
colange after these messages memoir
12:24
collage welcome to the podcast how you
12:26
doing
12:27
i'm fine thank you first time in the
12:29
podcast so i'm a little bit afraid but
12:32
i'm here so let's go
12:34
cool where where in the world are you
12:36
right
12:36
now i'm in uh in i live in france and
12:40
i'm close to lyon 30 minute from neon
12:44
we have small mountain they call it uh
12:47
mondiale and i'm in this whole zone so
12:51
pretty good fodo doing some mountain
12:53
biking in the winter yeah colin you were
12:55
just saying you've just had your first
12:57
bit of snow
12:58
yeah last week we have like
13:00
like few days we have some snow but no
13:03
it's
13:04
he's okay so
13:07
cool
13:08
cool so i think i said him in one of the
13:10
messages to you that that your story is
13:13
perhaps the most interesting of all and
13:15
the reason for that is that riders
13:17
generally come into elite and they find
13:19
their level pretty quickly you started
13:21
riding world cups in 2012
13:24
and in my head i'd put you in the same
13:26
category as jaqen i hope jack doesn't
13:28
mind me saying this but like a solid top
13:30
30 writer
13:32
there were results that were better than
13:33
that you had a 15th at fort william in
13:35
2015 a 13th at valenord in 2017th and
13:39
11th at valley stalling 2018 to name a
13:41
few but there were also results that
13:44
went the other way and it stayed like
13:46
that for six seasons did you feel like
13:49
you'd found your level that you would
13:51
that's where you were a solid top 30
13:53
rider
13:55
i think
13:57
for most of the
13:59
people who didn't know me and you know
14:02
me my
14:03
history when when you look the results
14:06
yeah it's look like my maximum level
14:10
but for me
14:12
i wasn't believe that this time it was
14:15
my maximum level because
14:18
you know most of the
14:20
young writers or the guru i don't know
14:23
starting big team like
14:26
sometime before today junior
14:28
and me i just started my uh
14:32
to racing local race in junior
14:35
like i
14:37
second year in
14:38
junior i did some
14:41
french cup one world cup and after i did
14:45
uh
14:46
my two
14:47
two first year in elite i was uh
14:50
[Music]
14:51
at school so i did like maybe seven woke
14:55
up in two years so
14:56
you know when i
14:58
i was in the third
15:00
edit
15:01
uh most of the
15:03
riders are like maybe
15:05
four years of full racing me i was just
15:08
like seven world cups so it's pretty
15:10
much one season yeah
15:12
so for me
15:14
my rare carrier started there
15:16
[Music]
15:18
we wasn't i wasn't in a big team i was i
15:21
was in a small team you know
15:24
it was the same uh
15:27
like today the same team but
15:29
it was the start i could play my team
15:32
manager did this team
15:34
uh
15:35
for helping some rider on his city and
15:38
we are pretty much a group of young
15:40
riders who want to do the quality done
15:43
and go in the final
15:45
and it was more than
15:48
it was more
15:51
a group of pre
15:53
a little bit organized than the team at
15:57
the beginning
15:59
cool so
16:01
yeah every year i had some
16:04
more experience and
16:07
yeah
16:09
i think i was in the top 13 uh
16:13
really fast
16:14
yeah 30 sorry yeah and
16:17
but
16:18
i was believe
16:20
i can do better we have not the best
16:22
bike at the moment not the best team
16:25
you know we learn
16:27
we learn everyone some
16:29
some skills every race
16:34
you know i have some mechanical problem
16:37
um
16:38
in
16:39
2018
16:42
i really start to have a good good
16:45
result in top 20 but i had a lot a lot
16:48
of problem mechanicals or
16:52
crash or
16:55
and we start
16:57
i think we finish
17:00
the partnership with nikolai in
17:04
2017
17:06
and in
17:08
2018 we didn't have any
17:11
frame
17:12
sponsor
17:13
so we would in saracen but the bike
17:16
didn't fit with me and i chant during
17:19
the the season the bike
17:22
with the comment sound
17:25
because the three first world cup didn't
17:28
work for me
17:29
so i chant and i did my first uh
17:32
pretty much top 10 i was 11 in valdisol
17:35
yeah
17:37
but
17:38
this year pretty much at every race we i
17:41
had a problem that
17:43
in vegeta i have my shocks
17:46
the robot was full opened raised my run
17:50
after that we have
17:52
one no i was writing my
17:55
on my window and by qualifying because i
17:58
moved
17:59
from 27 to 29 when i change my bike and
18:02
uh
18:04
and we didn't know but uh the donnie
18:09
tire had some problem with tubeless
18:12
in 29
18:16
like it was pretty frustrating but we
18:19
didn't know at this time
18:21
and yeah this year was pretty
18:24
difficult for that but i really believe
18:27
i can do some top 10 for sure so
18:30
yeah never stop believing yeah
18:34
but yeah when you you don't know my
18:36
story it's look like this like
18:39
top
18:40
30 is my maximum level at this time here
18:42
for sure
18:43
yeah it's it's really interesting to
18:45
hear that because obviously i've i've
18:47
raced you since you started your career
18:49
and
18:50
obviously for a time we had some similar
18:52
sponsors so i i knew you very well for a
18:55
number of years and
18:57
even knowing you on the racing circuit i
19:00
i didn't know most of that story
19:03
and even to me
19:04
it was like whoa where did benoit come
19:07
from and then listening to you explain
19:10
your path and the route you've had
19:13
it now makes a lot more sense so it's uh
19:15
it's really interesting to hear all that
19:17
and uh and and kind of hear the journey
19:20
from your perspective
19:21
so
19:22
moving on from where you just took us to
19:25
2019 you had a great start to the season
19:28
fantastic second place at european
19:30
championships in portugal and then you
19:33
had a big crash at fort william
19:34
resulting in a bad knee injury
19:37
did you write the rest of that season
19:39
off
19:40
[Music]
19:43
yeah it was difficult here because after
19:47
2018 i was really
19:49
thinking i can do better team is bigger
19:53
a bigger every year better component
19:57
more experience but i
20:00
i had
20:01
in
20:03
injured ankle ranger during the winter
20:06
so i come to to the first world cup
20:08
pretty much in prepare like physically
20:11
it was really hard
20:13
european championship was not bad
20:15
because
20:16
the track was less physical so maybe i
20:18
was able to do good writing
20:22
and
20:24
yeah for william i had a punctuator in
20:26
the quality i was riding in dawn
20:29
and on the last jump
20:32
the railways uh blocking my frame i
20:35
think with the tire puncture and
20:38
uh i go over the bar it was a small
20:41
crash but
20:42
i don't know in the air during the the
20:45
crash my knee turn with the bike and so
20:49
it was like
20:50
two more
20:51
of the bike pretty much during the
20:53
season so it's
20:55
i was riding at the end of the season
20:57
but
20:58
i was pretty slow
21:01
it was hard for me because
21:03
it was my first uh
21:05
summer in mozilla
21:08
so before the world cup when i'm
21:10
coming back
21:12
i think i did like 10 days on the donald
21:14
bike
21:15
but i was feeling really good you know
21:17
when you you try to push hard you also
21:20
always feel fast and
21:23
because it's your maximum at this moment
21:26
so you always feel fast but when i come
21:28
to the the first world cup after my
21:31
injury i did some training and
21:34
i think at the end of the training i
21:36
asked about
21:38
who was in my team first in the first
21:40
year in my team
21:43
if i can follow a baptist
21:45
and say yeah yeah and after three corner
21:48
i didn't see uh
21:52
so
21:54
at this time it was so hard because i
21:56
was really thinking i was ready but
21:59
no not at all
22:00
welcome to my world benoit
22:05
i didn't do the quality
22:09
in the top 360.
22:12
yeah it was hard for my man because the
22:14
year before i was 11 so
22:17
you know it's always hard when you you
22:19
did good in the past and you you can do
22:22
the same so pretty much the last three
22:25
world cup
22:26
it was not a really good wizard but i
22:29
was pretty motivated for the oxygen
22:31
unfortunately yeah i can relate to that
22:34
from this year that's for sure when fast
22:35
feels fast but it's not fast
22:41
talk us through what happened in the
22:43
excuse me start again
22:45
so talk us through what happened in the
22:47
offseason between
22:49
2019 and 2020 because i can't recall
22:53
ever seeing a rider's results changed so
22:56
much 2020 you took your first french cup
22:59
win
23:00
in later alp and i can add in there the
23:03
weekend before that we were racing in
23:05
albues
23:07
and i remember me and benoit had i think
23:10
eighth and ninth top splits together and
23:13
then benoit took five seconds out of me
23:15
at the bottom and i actually remember
23:17
speaking to gaetan about his bottom
23:20
split i think it was gaetan because you
23:22
took five seconds out of me and i'd
23:23
ridden pretty well um and normally we'd
23:26
you know fairly rub shoulders and uh i
23:29
was like that there's something wrong
23:30
with the timing um
23:32
and then
23:34
the week after you went and as i said
23:37
you won later out and then you were on
23:39
the box every other round you were then
23:41
french national champion head of like
23:43
and loris so i was like yeah fair enough
23:46
i think he just smoked me um
23:48
something's changing and then and this
23:50
was all before the world cup's even
23:52
started so
23:53
give us a talk through your preparation
23:55
for that 2020 season
23:58
yeah uh
24:01
you know when
24:03
a rider i really think when a rider
24:05
oh my internet connection is not stable
24:09
it's all right we can hear you
24:12
so you know when
24:15
most of the riders have a big change
24:17
like this
24:19
everybody
24:20
i think is a they did they did
24:24
something really different during this
24:27
off season
24:29
but finale is uh i think
24:35
you work during
24:38
every year you you work a lot and
24:41
every year you improve your riding
24:44
and uh
24:46
is not in one off season you build your
24:48
level is doing many years
24:52
so
24:54
yeah
24:55
every year i try to find something to
24:58
improve
25:01
normally when i want to change some
25:05
one habit in my
25:09
in my
25:10
skills or
25:12
in my riding
25:14
i try a lot on one thing
25:17
to jump because it takes a long time to
25:19
change something you know when you are
25:21
in the race run
25:23
you you you don't ride with a
25:26
reflection you write with instinct and
25:29
like an animal
25:31
yes change this uh
25:34
this uh habit is really hard you need to
25:37
to work a lot yeah
25:40
so
25:42
i think is a mix of a lot of things
25:46
i think maybe
25:48
before i have the level
25:52
of this but not the result
25:54
yeah
25:56
during the winter yeah i changed small
25:59
things like in first
26:02
the team changed a lot
26:04
because we we had
26:08
cami come to the team yeah
26:10
and
26:11
uh
26:12
she managed the
26:15
bike sponsor in the team and the team
26:17
manager manager
26:19
danval the financial sponsor
26:22
and she she shows the best uh component
26:25
like we have fox frontal
26:28
schwab combos are wheels uh
26:31
shimano
26:32
and no we we are sure we have one of the
26:37
top three best bike in the paddock yeah
26:42
so when in the past i have some
26:44
mechanical issue and
26:47
and not
26:49
you know it's not bad component but it
26:51
was it was good but not the best when
26:53
you have the best is so much easier
26:56
easier to
26:58
to sit the bike to improve your skills
27:01
and everything that the first thing will
27:03
change
27:04
also the
27:06
the team are
27:08
area more professional
27:11
we have more [ __ ] every year because
27:13
we improve the results every year
27:17
in the team we have monika
27:20
she did some good podiums in the past we
27:22
have uh
27:24
salazar she did some podium also in
27:27
world cup
27:28
we had some young junior parties pioneer
27:30
sometime in the top 10.
27:33
so
27:34
uh it's also hard to find directly the
27:37
best stuff for the team you know to find
27:40
um
27:42
like
27:43
sometimes you have a good mechanic but
27:45
it's not fit with the team
27:48
is you know some teams are very
27:50
professional some team are is a bit more
27:53
uh fun inside but it's not bad or wrong
27:57
you just need to to find the right
27:59
people going with the right one in the
28:00
team and his take time
28:02
i listen one time i think he's in the
28:05
outspoken of regularly he asked his team
28:08
manager if you need to try a new team
28:10
now
28:11
how many ai he needs to to find the good
28:14
people and he said three years is a lot
28:16
when you when you know to do
28:18
a good team it's uh
28:21
so yeah the team is more professional
28:23
every year
28:25
also i challenge my
28:28
uh of uh not physio in my coach
28:32
yeah no is uh adrienne blascher he's the
28:35
physiology of the team
28:38
and he's also take time to to find the
28:41
right pee and the right
28:42
coach you know now we we
28:45
[Music]
28:46
we found every year a good
28:51
good thing to improve
28:53
uh
28:54
yeah for sure
28:56
yeah and uh
28:58
i was i was um
29:00
in mozain during the summer
29:03
also you know this year
29:04
in 2020 we had uh
29:07
the kovid yeah
29:09
so
29:10
we had more time in the summer to ride
29:12
and a lot of rider
29:17
not stopped but
29:18
was more relaxed and me i was
29:21
fully focused for racing because i had
29:24
the
29:25
enjoyed the year before yeah so for me
29:27
it was like pretty much vital to have
29:30
good results yeah i was really uh
29:34
motivate android
29:37
the lockdown i
29:39
i try to do everything i can to to keep
29:42
my
29:43
physical preparation and after enrolling
29:46
i try
29:47
a lot to change my habit on my breaking
29:51
during all the summer so i think it's
29:52
payoff and
29:56
yeah
29:57
i come to
29:58
to the french cup i was pretty ready and
30:01
maybe some other rider wasn't but me i
30:04
was ready to fight
30:07
so i i was
30:09
taken there
30:10
is one we didn't know your story and
30:12
really you've just got to forget 2019
30:15
because of your injury and if you do
30:17
that
30:18
your last result was 11th so
30:21
going from the 11th at valdez stall into
30:23
the way you performed in 2020 actually
30:25
makes quite a lot of sense and then the
30:27
other thing is
30:28
what you said about your team and your
30:30
sponsors and your new coach and your
30:33
preparation
30:34
you've got to have everything right and
30:36
everything lined up for things to work
30:38
so
30:39
when you explain that it makes it a lot
30:41
of sense sorry george carry on yeah but
30:44
jimmy take time to to be to be
30:46
professionally we we didn't have enough
30:49
money and
30:51
experience at the beginning for sure i
30:53
know we are pretty pretty good
30:55
yeah
30:56
so one of the things you said you tried
30:58
to improve lots of things um
31:01
one of the things i wanted to talk to
31:02
you about is that i i overheard some
31:04
people talking at one of the races and i
31:06
can't remember who it was but they said
31:08
your style on the bike had improved
31:10
dramatically
31:12
that you didn't look good on the bike in
31:14
previous years but now you do is that
31:16
something you've worked on your body
31:18
position and
31:23
yeah i'm working on my body position but
31:28
i'm not really angry with that my study
31:32
didn't change
31:33
you know first time in the
31:36
live tv
31:37
say oh yeah he have long legs and you
31:40
use his long legs
31:42
no some friends call me long legs
31:50
i think this year still to say he having
31:52
lazy use this uh to his advantage
31:56
so
31:57
my writing changed a little bit yes for
32:00
sure but like not
32:02
i didn't ride with my harm so i didn't
32:05
write like a more pioneer
32:07
so i
32:09
i have my
32:10
my style i keep it from the
32:12
beginning and and also you know
32:18
my
32:20
clothes change
32:22
a lot from the beginning so
32:24
sometimes
32:26
some people's um
32:30
uh
32:31
check too much this
32:33
and think you change your your style but
32:35
not it's not your style just your
32:37
clothes
32:39
yeah for sure
32:40
it's like in world cup sometimes you see
32:42
at the training some riders are really
32:44
fast but it's look fast it's not really
32:46
fast and it's a little bit the same it's
32:49
not like statistics
32:52
[Music]
32:54
okay so going back to 2020 12th at world
32:57
championships in leo gang and then
32:59
inside the top 20 all four world cups
33:01
with the seventh at the first of the two
33:03
races in loser
33:05
i assume you were very happy with with
33:07
your season in 2020
33:10
to be a nest
33:13
for the world cup season i was a little
33:15
bit
33:16
frustrated
33:18
because after the
33:20
french cup
33:22
season
33:23
i was pretty much like i think
33:25
overconfident i was
33:27
too much to believe in me and after the
33:30
french
33:31
championships i beat chloe bernie and
33:34
laurie
33:36
greene was a world champion so in my
33:39
mind it was a little bit like
33:41
okay i did this so maybe i can beat them
33:45
also in world cup
33:47
yeah
33:49
but
33:50
no world cup is working
33:53
like it's not it's not it's not the same
33:56
you can have all the
33:59
work pride in the french cup
34:02
it's not a world cup world cup is way
34:04
different because
34:05
the mindset and the
34:09
co media coverage and everything so it's
34:12
it changes out the thing yeah
34:14
so
34:16
i come i was happy with my result in the
34:18
world championship
34:20
in logan because it was pretty hard
34:23
i have like
34:24
not a good run but when you saw everyone
34:27
uh
34:28
yeah
34:29
i'm pretty stoked because easier to
34:33
to crash and to do a good one so i was
34:36
pretty strong
34:38
but in my ebook
34:40
i was too much
34:42
i want too much i think i did like big
34:45
mistake during my first
34:48
one
34:50
the first one i did big mistake
34:53
so when i crashed before the quality so
34:55
i was not really good i crashed in the
34:57
warm garden i was like
34:59
i was not sure to write the
35:00
qualification and everything so it was
35:02
hard
35:03
and after i loser i was thinking okay
35:06
just do what you can do and
35:10
we will see i did a pretty much
35:12
pretty good first
35:15
wound
35:16
in news i was seven i think
35:20
and i think i didn't manage good
35:23
pedaling section because i was thought
35:25
before the
35:28
the physical resection and i was seven
35:31
at the end so
35:32
alpha second of the podium
35:35
i always really believe i can do it for
35:37
the second run but uh
35:39
yeah in the second run in
35:42
rusa
35:43
i took the
35:46
the
35:53
i was in some time of
35:56
laurie gergie
36:00
yeah
36:01
i took the rain
36:03
so i was like on the top 20 yeah it's
36:06
very crazy it's crazy because the
36:07
qualification
36:09
we have no point i didn't pedal him
36:11
crazy in the paid section and in the
36:14
final i was slower in the battery
36:16
section because he was teaching he was
36:18
crazy yeah sure
36:21
so um oh yeah i was i i was a little bit
36:24
frustrated about my uh work obsession
36:27
but yeah
36:29
i
36:30
i yeah i was i believe i can do i can do
36:33
a podium for the year after that
36:36
yeah for sure
36:37
so was there a good mood in the team at
36:39
the end of the 2020 season with camille
36:41
being world champion monica thurs and
36:44
then you'd had some good results was the
36:46
team mood at the end of the year
36:48
a strong one going into 20 yeah yeah
36:51
it's it's crazy
36:52
we have you know now in the team like
36:56
we find the good people the right people
36:58
every
37:00
uh staff member believe on the rider
37:04
we have good moon everyone have the same
37:07
vision so
37:09
it's pretty is very good
37:11
uh everyone have a hole in the team
37:14
yeah
37:16
so
37:17
yeah the moon is
37:19
very good and we we know where where we
37:22
start
37:23
so when you look back it's crazy
37:26
uh can we balance world champion for a
37:29
team at the beginning we just want to to
37:31
do the quality done it's
37:34
crazy and yes so
37:37
yeah we are pretty confident
37:42
yeah
37:43
i know it's not about the bike
37:46
sorry i know it's not about the bike but
37:48
how important has the common cell been
37:50
in your success you mentioned about
37:52
before about switching from the saracen
37:54
you must love the common song
37:58
yeah yeah yeah in first comments i want
38:00
to have the best bite like
38:02
it's crazy how they
38:05
they put
38:07
money and effort in in the race to to
38:10
have the best to to win world cup
38:13
you know you have max commensal on every
38:16
race
38:18
it's crazy because he know
38:21
how it's hard
38:22
to do good result in world cup you know
38:25
what is it
38:27
you know sometimes some bad thing can
38:29
happen
38:30
uh
38:32
so it's really cool because he is always
38:36
ask you if everything is good you want
38:39
to
38:40
to put his effort to
38:43
to have the best results so he
38:47
helps you
38:48
at
38:50
his maximum
38:54
and
38:55
it's not
38:56
only that there was
38:58
also last year
39:01
they did the track
39:02
just for the commentary rider in
39:04
pasquette
39:06
uh i think uh it's the only round to
39:10
that
39:12
yeah and it's not just about testing we
39:15
we do some
39:17
testing camp with the engineer of
39:20
commencement
39:22
so they help us for the seating of the
39:25
bike
39:26
but also we
39:28
we checked the body position the skills
39:31
of writing
39:35
he had some meeting with the
39:37
manager of my team to
39:40
to see what they can improve on the
39:42
managing of the team on managing of the
39:45
test com
39:47
so they put
39:49
the maximum of the
39:51
of
39:52
yeah commensals put their effort in the
39:55
maximum of for the racing
39:57
and they love that and
40:00
i'm pretty stoked to write full blown
40:02
like this
40:04
because
40:05
yeah
40:06
you know
40:07
if you do some
40:09
batteries you would say out there if you
40:11
do good good reasons they are there so
40:14
yeah you can see his passion run
40:16
throughout the whole company
40:19
you're still on the production bike is
40:20
that correct
40:22
yeah yeah not the one that common-sense
40:26
offer riding not in 2029
40:29
have you got that bike yet
40:31
i i never tried this bike okay
40:36
okay so 2021 fifth of the first racing
40:40
leo game that was your first world cup
40:42
podium how important was that first big
40:44
result at the start of the season
40:47
yeah it's crazy because it was my goal
40:50
for
40:51
you know all all the winter all the off
40:54
season
40:56
i was thinking about this i can do a
40:58
podium i can do in video i was really
41:00
believe on this and frustrated i did it
41:03
so it was pretty much okay i didn't buy
41:06
gold or what i will do now
41:09
but
41:10
yeah
41:11
i was so stoked you know for me it was a
41:13
dream to do a podium
41:15
yeah uh
41:16
it's just crazy um
41:18
you know i i just did my first top 10
41:22
the year before
41:23
so yeah for me it was it was crazy
41:27
a dream come true
41:31
nice and also he put a little bit of
41:34
pressure on my shoulder for the roon
41:37
after that
41:39
because
41:40
i always want to do better so
41:45
yeah i was just going to ask what
41:46
difference did it make to the rest of
41:48
your season then being a protected rider
41:51
did it change your your approach into
41:53
the next races
41:55
yeah for sure because
41:57
in first i was really
42:00
wanted to be in the top 10 of overall so
42:03
you need to to do some
42:05
point in the qualification so
42:08
you need to ride fast
42:10
and
42:12
yeah it's less stressful you keep some
42:15
energy mental energy for the final
42:18
because
42:19
in qualification you know you you can do
42:22
the clarification
42:23
but sometimes that thing can happen
42:26
yeah
42:27
so yeah and also you can measure
42:30
better yourself with all other top rider
42:33
because
42:34
you know you you ride at
42:36
the maximum in qualification when you
42:38
are not protected
42:41
you try to have some uh
42:44
you know
42:47
margin yeah
42:48
yeah to imagine for
42:51
if you do some mistake or something like
42:54
this to be sure to be in the final so
42:56
you can ride at your maximum and like
42:59
other top rider and for the final you
43:02
can
43:04
see the statistic of the qualification
43:07
to see what is your
43:09
best sector everything so it's easier to
43:12
improve your your restaurant for the
43:14
finale yeah
43:16
so
43:17
28th in lager
43:19
french national champion once again and
43:21
then second at european championships in
43:23
maribor before taking sixth at the world
43:26
cup at the same venue the following week
43:29
then the big one
43:30
silver medal at worlds just well under
43:33
0.3 seconds off being world champion
43:36
tell us about world championships week
43:38
did it all go smoothly for you
43:41
[Music]
43:42
it's never going
43:44
smoothly in world cup
43:48
it was a really
43:51
hard week
43:54
in workshop because i
43:56
was
43:57
working really hard on this track
44:00
with my
44:03
assistant manager paul
44:05
he checked every line or all day long so
44:12
we pretty much try everything
44:14
like and sometimes not just one
44:17
time we we try free time to know exactly
44:23
which line will be the best for me
44:25
and
44:28
sometimes he compared me to the other
44:30
rider and they said this rider is faster
44:33
on this and everything so
44:35
it was a crazy work
44:37
this week
44:39
in the sitting room i wasn't feeling
44:41
good because i tried so many things
44:44
i was i wasn't like
44:47
ready to push
44:49
but for the final shoe 100 portion i
44:52
have the best line for me everything was
44:55
perfect the bike yeah we work also on
44:57
the bike with my mechanics and it we do
45:00
we did good
45:01
good sitting for sure
45:03
yeah
45:05
and
45:06
yeah the i was pretty
45:10
[Music]
45:11
stressful it was stressful for the final
45:14
because
45:16
i was thinking on this strike from
45:19
yeah
45:20
the beginning of the off season because
45:23
i
45:23
i know i can do
45:25
something good on this track yeah
45:27
and when i
45:29
took the gondola in the valley to go for
45:33
my final one my restaurant
45:36
i saw uncle vidal was third in the
45:39
seating he didn't do a
45:41
good time in
45:43
his
45:45
waste run so i was okay for the moment
45:48
no rider didn't
45:50
uh did a really good
45:53
time so is it a bit more open than
45:57
what i
45:58
expected in the gondola i saw a
46:03
grenade crash just uh
46:06
in front of me it was crazy
46:09
so oh yeah it's staying like pretty open
46:12
like
46:12
for me it was too idol
46:16
can be something really good so
46:19
i was pretty confident for my reason and
46:21
my restaurant it was
46:25
pretty much perfect i pushing hard
46:28
[Music]
46:30
i have one goal it's at the hand keep
46:34
pushing because when you are tired
46:35
sometimes you use some
46:37
some time and i
46:40
i am pushing hard keep going i i did
46:42
some little mistake but for very sorry
46:45
absolutely
46:48
yeah i just keep keep going
46:51
uh until the bottom and yeah i did the
46:54
one i wanted so i was so stoked at the
46:57
finish here it was crazy for me to do a
47:00
run like this invite this earlier nice
47:02
so you come down and straight into the
47:04
hot seat
47:06
you was you'd seated seventh so there's
47:08
there's um six riders to go troy comes
47:11
down next but he's not point three back
47:13
so there's just five riders left at the
47:15
top
47:16
talk us through your emotions did you
47:18
dare to dream at any stage that you you
47:20
might win it
47:25
yeah i dreamed a little bit
47:27
but
47:28
when i saw uh
47:31
yeah troy he was close to me
47:34
i don't know
47:35
it was
47:36
it was a little bit strange because uh
47:40
i at the end of my run i was so stoked
47:43
about marijuana
47:44
whatever on my results he was i was so
47:47
stoked so
47:49
yeah
47:50
um
47:53
i'm not really dreaming about winning
47:56
uh when i was on the
47:58
hot seat
48:00
uh i think greg come prim
48:03
in the first
48:05
i don't know
48:06
sir right now maybe yeah i think he was
48:08
fourth was he fourth from the end
48:10
because there was yeah it was three
48:11
after him so yeah not many after
48:13
but he he was a little bit uh
48:16
late in the middle of the track and
48:20
yeah i was faster
48:23
until the last uh
48:24
split i think
48:26
and yeah he he beat me at the hand so
48:30
it is like this but
48:32
yeah after that i pretty much uh
48:36
i checked with my teammates how many
48:38
riders still on the track or at the top
48:41
to see if i can do a podium finally in
48:44
second it was crazy
48:46
for me
48:52
well after such a big result how did you
48:54
refocus because
48:56
you finished the season with the 14th in
48:58
lenza hyde and then 11th and 9th in
49:00
snowshoe how did you
49:03
get your mental strength mental mentally
49:06
how did you get back to it
49:09
[Music]
49:11
it was hard because
49:13
i think after valdisol i put so much
49:18
mental focus in the race i was a little
49:20
bit like tired
49:23
more in my mind i think
49:26
and
49:29
i always struggle a little bit in men's
49:31
ride
49:33
so
49:34
the result wasn't what
49:37
i expect at this moment and
49:41
it was a little bit hard because when
49:43
you do a really good result and after
49:46
bad results you feel you lose like your
49:48
magic power or something you know so
49:50
it's a little bit strange
49:53
so
49:54
[Music]
49:55
afternoon's right i tried to
49:58
refocus in
50:00
the last two ways
50:02
but i think i was a little bit tired
50:04
there it was a big season
50:07
and
50:08
also after the world champ i was uh
50:11
[Music]
50:14
really stopped
50:16
but
50:17
a few weeks after i was little bit
50:20
frustrated about to be second maybe and
50:23
it was i was like second at the european
50:26
world championship six
50:29
i missed the podium in maribor and
50:31
second again i was a bit like
50:34
it was like you know everyone trained to
50:37
be first not to be a second or
50:40
you try you train to be in the podium
50:43
not to be six like it's a little bit
50:45
i miss maybe something but
50:48
it's like this
50:51
cool
50:54
so you finished eighth in the overall
50:56
after two amazing seasons do you now
50:58
feel like you're part of the top ten
51:02
yeah yeah i seem to be part of the top
51:04
ten but you know in the spot everything
51:06
can
51:07
can change in the bad way like in the
51:10
good way yeah so we saw some
51:13
good rider like danielle this year i
51:15
don't know if he
51:17
did the podium
51:19
i'm not sure like it's crazy because
51:21
like here i win some world cup you know
51:24
yeah the level in world cup now is so
51:26
high everything uh
51:28
comes and
51:30
yeah you you can be close to do good
51:34
results and don't
51:36
don't
51:37
did it so it's yeah sometimes
51:40
it's hot so yeah dc i was in the top 10
51:43
but next year we never know so yeah
51:47
i need i need i need to try hard this
51:50
winter
51:51
but i'm pretty
51:52
i have big motivation for that so it's
51:55
not
51:56
yeah we will see
51:58
cool
51:58
i believe i can do
52:00
the same
52:01
yeah i believe it as well but as you
52:03
said you just got to work hard and uh
52:06
yeah try your luck so
52:10
yeah for sure so if my memory serves me
52:12
correctly
52:13
at the start of 2021 you signed with
52:15
dorval for another two years
52:19
but we've heard all kinds of rumors at
52:21
the end of the season that maybe you're
52:23
moving on um can you update us on your
52:26
team situation will you be with torval
52:29
next year
52:30
yeah i saw a lot of rumor
52:33
[Music]
52:36
yeah we i will stay in
52:38
indonesia
52:40
so for sure
52:42
we have some chat with other team but uh
52:48
he's not like so i i saw in internet uh
52:52
some team will bury me or something like
52:54
that is this
52:56
the the transfer not uh watching like
52:58
this it's not like team manager
53:01
fight with sweet chase or something like
53:03
this you know
53:06
yeah
53:07
some team come to me and have a little
53:11
chat
53:11
what we you will do next year if you
53:14
free maybe we have a discussion is more
53:17
like this and yeah
53:19
something but
53:20
i didn't know knowing the team we are
53:22
pretty good we have a good moon in the
53:24
team
53:25
uh
53:27
just have believed on the right there we
53:29
have the best bike
53:32
i know i can do good results
53:36
so
53:37
why why why i will change the only thing
53:41
we didn't have in the team is a
53:46
old rider
53:48
with a lot of experience at the top we
53:50
didn't have this
53:52
but other thing we have everything so
53:56
no no reason to change yet
53:59
i knew we were going to ask that
54:01
question and when we i asked you about
54:03
the new common sound supreme and you
54:05
said no i haven't got my hands on that
54:07
bike yet i thought oh maybe he is moving
54:10
to another team none of us have and
54:11
that's because of kovids
54:14
we're told we'll all be using it at some
54:16
point next year um but again i think
54:19
yeah
54:20
for the commencement is
54:22
pretty
54:23
yeah it's complicated because there are
54:25
many teams
54:26
yeah they can
54:28
give to everyone a prototype
54:31
a prototype is really expensive
54:34
they need to follow
54:35
i think
54:37
your prototype you have
54:41
more problem
54:42
when you are not the factory team for
54:44
sure
54:46
so and for us it's easier to ride the
54:50
production bike
54:52
and also
54:56
we didn't have to do the testing for the
54:59
prototype so we
55:02
we save some time and
55:04
when you we come to the
55:07
the next uh when we will come to the
55:10
next bike
55:12
uh
55:13
mikko
55:14
had one year on the bike and there's
55:17
some experiment to share with you and
55:19
you you save time again to
55:22
do the setting of the bike and
55:24
everything
55:25
so for us it's uh just uh yes
55:29
we will stay in this situation here for
55:31
sure
55:32
so before before we go i have one last
55:35
question and i remember watching a world
55:37
cup i think it might have been fort
55:39
william 2015 or 2016.
55:42
and
55:43
i saw a rider and they were on a a belt
55:45
drive nikolai with a gearbox and the
55:48
belt snapped right out of the ba the
55:50
gear and that basically destroyed any
55:52
chance of that technology ever being
55:54
used at world cup level again was that
55:56
you on that rider did you end were you
55:58
that rider it was me
56:00
i think i had like
56:02
four year or three and uh
56:05
if you get gearbox yeah it was so so
56:08
good like you can ride with with
56:11
noise and
56:13
you can change the speed when you walk
56:15
yeah
56:17
and yeah this time i broke the
56:20
it's not the belt it was the gearbox
56:22
inside but
56:24
we think it was a production problem
56:28
then
56:29
sometimes happen
56:31
yeah i think it's the treadmill
56:34
i don't know in english
56:36
like the opinion
56:38
inside yeah it was not
56:40
you need to
56:42
to put in the hot water and the this uh
56:47
it was is it didn't do good
56:50
i think we eat what we think and yeah i
56:52
broke the
56:53
big gear box but for sure in the future
56:55
we'll see more
56:57
of this
56:59
yeah i was loving it when i was writing
57:02
this
57:03
cool jack you were on nikolai around
57:05
that time you experimented with lots of
57:08
stuff with chris porter did you try the
57:09
gearbox at all
57:11
i tried it once um
57:13
chris was pretty keen for me to try it
57:15
but
57:16
for me the shifting
57:18
system wasn't good enough um
57:20
so we kind of achieved what the gearbox
57:23
gives you with the weight
57:24
yeah stability we achieved that through
57:26
the lead testing that we did so
57:30
you know
57:33
mate i can't remember i think that was
57:35
2016.
57:36
my mind doesn't go back that far i can't
57:38
remember which one it was um
57:40
but yeah i think ben was right we will
57:42
at some point for sure see down bikes
57:45
with gearboxes in
57:46
um because the weight
57:48
nice and low down makes the bike more
57:50
stable yeah
57:52
the weight when you ride it wasn't uh
57:55
a big problem because it's uh
57:58
close to the
57:59
the bottom you know close to the end of
58:01
it exactly
58:02
you don't you don't feel it
58:04
and my nikolai bike was like
58:09
18 and a half kilos so it was not too
58:12
bad
58:14
it's not the lightest bike it's like a
58:16
big tube
58:18
so
58:19
yeah yeah but you need to to build the
58:21
bike on this for sure yeah
58:24
cool well thank you ever so much benoit
58:26
for making the time to come on the
58:27
podcast as i said at the start it's a
58:29
it's a pretty inspiring story and i
58:31
really hope you can carry it on on into
58:34
2022 and beyond so around this time last
58:37
year we had the chance to record with
58:38
tracy hannah she just announced her
58:40
retirement so everyone was wanting a
58:42
piece of her and she was holed up in a
58:44
hotel in australia
58:45
isolating after returning from europe so
58:47
she had lots of time on her hands having
58:49
learned that she was using the time to
58:51
record a number of podcasts we decided
58:53
to try and do something a little bit
58:54
different
58:55
it was based on a tv program called
58:57
inside the actors studio where the host
58:59
would always end with a questionnaire
59:00
and we thought it would be a fun
59:01
distraction from the from the same old
59:03
same old so having done that for one
59:05
retiring rider this year we decided we'd
59:08
do it again emily siegenthaler is a
59:10
six-time swiss national champion it's
59:12
just 16 world cup podiums to a name and
59:14
we'll be chatting with her after these
59:16
messages emily siegenthaler welcome back
59:19
to the podcast tell us a little bit
59:20
about where in the world you are right
59:22
now
59:24
so i'm at home
59:26
in switzerland um
59:29
cam and i just moved house right after
59:31
the season so
59:33
we moved not far just maybe um on the
59:36
hill up above from beale yeah where we
59:38
lived before and yeah we've been
59:42
like 99 of the time above the fog
59:45
so we're really happy about that
59:48
and where have you been this is to be
59:49
straight in it
59:51
where have you been this last week
59:52
because um you've been on your travels
59:54
aren't you
59:55
yeah i've
59:56
i've just
59:58
came home from a one week trip to the us
1:00:02
which was
1:00:04
a little bit last minute but i guess um
1:00:07
what was it really willing to
1:00:09
yeah do something because i retired and
1:00:12
and i was
1:00:13
i had a great time being at the
1:00:14
headquarters riding and also riding each
1:00:17
other for the roam festival
1:00:19
so it was it was great times
1:00:21
cool so 14 years racing world cups how
1:00:24
did you know it was time to retire and
1:00:26
and when did you make the decision
1:00:29
um
1:00:30
so i think
1:00:32
there was a bit of time between
1:00:35
the time i know it was like the time to
1:00:36
retire and the time i decided
1:00:39
because
1:00:40
obviously you kind of know after like
1:00:43
after
1:00:44
covered year 2020
1:00:46
and then at the beginning of 2021 i felt
1:00:49
like
1:00:50
um
1:00:51
like my speed was there but
1:00:53
at the races i struggled with
1:00:56
i don't know like commitment and
1:00:59
some other things like the stress and
1:01:02
everything i had a hard time dealing
1:01:03
with it i guess
1:01:05
one year doing nothing you just
1:01:07
kind of like
1:01:09
lose it i guess
1:01:10
yeah and then
1:01:12
i did quite well in leo again but then
1:01:15
obviously i had some crashes my race
1:01:17
runs and stuff and then
1:01:18
when i was in maribor i was really like
1:01:20
trying to
1:01:22
just kind turn it around and i know
1:01:24
marijuana doesn't really suit me usually
1:01:26
so just i'm gonna go to european champs
1:01:28
and do well there so i can
1:01:30
prepare for a rope up and i was just
1:01:32
like had a great feeling on my bike but
1:01:34
then i was just like kind of far back
1:01:36
and i was like oh god like there's so
1:01:39
much pressure on me and i felt like
1:01:42
this is type of of tracks where not like
1:01:45
legend again where it's technically
1:01:47
kind of hard so you you can
1:01:50
do like a 90 run and still like get a
1:01:52
good result like marble you know i need
1:01:54
to go 110 otherwise you're just
1:01:57
just gonna get like smashed so yeah it
1:02:00
was in between the european champs and
1:02:01
maribor
1:02:03
woke up then that decided to retire
1:02:06
i had a little breakdown and now
1:02:09
and when
1:02:10
yeah like i mean i was on my own and i
1:02:11
was just like oh my god what i'm gonna
1:02:13
do because
1:02:14
it was so hard to like decide but as
1:02:16
soon as i made my decision and i started
1:02:18
to talk to people i felt actually so
1:02:20
relieved and
1:02:21
i guess also after that after that
1:02:23
weekend my
1:02:25
my feeling improved at the races as well
1:02:28
cool
1:02:29
well all the girls got together with you
1:02:32
for a farewell lunch what was that in
1:02:34
lenses hide
1:02:35
was that the last one
1:02:37
yet i i don't i don't recall that ever
1:02:40
happening before and i think that's a
1:02:42
sign of kind of how loved you are on the
1:02:44
circuit did it mean a lot to you
1:02:47
um
1:02:48
yeah i think it was the first time
1:02:50
but
1:02:51
i think
1:02:53
so i i i actually um
1:02:56
organized it i
1:02:58
wrote to everyone and i said i really
1:03:00
want to do something and i thought it
1:03:02
would be better to do it in lanza hide
1:03:04
it because
1:03:05
then i have like i know the people there
1:03:07
and i have the connections to make it
1:03:09
happen
1:03:10
yeah and
1:03:12
everybody came
1:03:14
like almost everybody came and and then
1:03:16
they also like prepared something to
1:03:18
give to me
1:03:19
um after the race on the podium
1:03:21
everybody signed their numbers yeah i
1:03:23
saw that i was cool
1:03:25
yeah
1:03:26
it's here at home in the garage
1:03:28
yeah so i think that meant even more but
1:03:31
just i wanted to do something for for
1:03:34
like for them for the older ladies i
1:03:36
shared all these years with some of them
1:03:38
are younger some of them are older but
1:03:39
then the younger can also see that
1:03:42
it doesn't mean they need to like
1:03:44
compete every time with each other and
1:03:47
we can just like
1:03:49
try to make our sports grow as well yeah
1:03:52
yeah now he was it was really amazing
1:03:54
excellent right well let's get into it
1:03:56
jack do you want to do the honors
1:03:58
yeah i'll kick things off and uh first
1:04:00
question's a good one
1:04:02
favourite world cup track emily
1:04:05
so
1:04:06
is it is it on the circuit right now our
1:04:08
favorite ever
1:04:10
our favorite ever i think forever for
1:04:11
sure
1:04:14
champagne
1:04:15
nice yeah good choice
1:04:18
why is that what what is it that you
1:04:19
liked about champari
1:04:21
um
1:04:23
well it's home track
1:04:25
um
1:04:26
i think it was the steepness of it was
1:04:28
kind of like unseen before
1:04:30
yeah and
1:04:33
it has everything like the jumps like
1:04:36
even that jump sections at the end
1:04:38
towards like the last uh version of it
1:04:41
was just like it's a shame that you
1:04:43
can't do that anymore because it's on
1:04:44
some farmer's land but
1:04:46
um yeah it was amazing had such a great
1:04:50
feeling coming to the finish and even
1:04:52
how knackered you were from that pretty
1:04:54
long and technical track he was still
1:04:56
like sending it and it was amazing
1:04:59
yeah for sure it was definitely one that
1:05:00
i really enjoyed
1:05:02
okay and then least favorite world cup
1:05:04
track again
1:05:06
just
1:05:06
ever
1:05:08
everything when you have to pedal a lot
1:05:10
probably probably epitomized but
1:05:13
i mean
1:05:14
these tracks are really kind of fun in
1:05:16
practice because you can chill but then
1:05:18
in the race it's like the most horrible
1:05:19
thing ever
1:05:21
yeah because
1:05:22
it's kind of flat-ish there's some cool
1:05:24
jumps but then
1:05:26
if you lose the speed you just like lose
1:05:28
so much time because it's such a long
1:05:31
pedally bit in the middle it's like
1:05:32
almost like one minute of like pedals so
1:05:34
if you mess it up a little bit
1:05:36
you're just gonna there's no like margin
1:05:39
for around little bits and i don't
1:05:41
really like that
1:05:42
okay i remember didn't somebody was he
1:05:45
pete didn't he run a dropper post
1:05:48
somebody remember a lot
1:05:50
there's also um
1:05:51
some people with singing crowns there's
1:05:53
like all type of stuff
1:05:55
like this and canberra as well like yeah
1:05:58
nine worlds that was like
1:06:00
same kind of track people would write it
1:06:02
without knee pads i mean i remember that
1:06:04
like that was that was horrible yeah
1:06:09
right question number three then
1:06:10
greatest rival
1:06:15
i don't have any
1:06:17
um
1:06:19
i mean if you thought if you think about
1:06:22
like
1:06:23
uh halftime finding someone that was
1:06:25
over all like all the time fighting with
1:06:28
but obviously like
1:06:30
the greatest rival in general will be
1:06:31
rachel accident for me because she's
1:06:33
just like
1:06:34
the most competitive and fierce
1:06:37
like racer that we had on the field yeah
1:06:40
and
1:06:41
yeah so i think
1:06:43
maybe
1:06:44
other than that may be my stuff because
1:06:46
sometimes i made my life really hard on
1:06:48
just by crashing and happy injuries so
1:06:52
yeah but otherwise write your lesson for
1:06:54
sure so rachel's been out for
1:06:57
how long now probably
1:06:58
two or three seasons since you rest do
1:07:00
you reckon 2019 yeah yeah do you think
1:07:03
15 think she could still come back and
1:07:05
win
1:07:08
i mean there's a lot of commitment but
1:07:11
if she puts everything onto it she could
1:07:14
definitely do it because she has the
1:07:15
talent and she has the
1:07:18
like
1:07:19
all the skills and the physical skills
1:07:22
as well but then
1:07:24
it only depends of
1:07:26
yeah of your commitment if you want to
1:07:29
see it again yeah so that's a big
1:07:31
question but if she can do that there's
1:07:33
no question she can come back and win it
1:07:35
will be harder than before
1:07:37
she could still do it yeah
1:07:40
so
1:07:40
question number four who's your best
1:07:42
mate on the circuit and it can't be
1:07:44
coming out
1:07:45
that'd be too easy
1:07:48
yeah that would be very easy um
1:07:51
well even though she stopped drinking
1:07:53
she's still on a circuit because she's
1:07:54
helping when she'll definitely be tracy
1:07:56
hannah
1:07:57
i think she said you
1:07:58
in her interview i think she said you
1:08:01
yeah we're besties
1:08:04
it wasn't always like that but i guess
1:08:09
tracy is like someone that has a lot of
1:08:11
barriers and if you get like through
1:08:13
them she's someone that you can really
1:08:14
trust so i really appreciate that
1:08:18
so question number five what would you
1:08:20
say your biggest strength has been in
1:08:23
your career
1:08:25
[Music]
1:08:28
i think it's like well my career is long
1:08:30
so
1:08:31
it's fine it's hard to find
1:08:33
one strength on the whole thing because
1:08:35
i guess when i came in my biggest
1:08:38
strengths was like courage i was not
1:08:40
afraid to hit stuff
1:08:42
and then also that became kind of my
1:08:45
biggest weakness because i got injured
1:08:47
so much so i guess over all in all
1:08:50
looking back probably like
1:08:53
my patience
1:08:55
and my experience which kind of goes
1:08:58
together
1:08:59
but that grew over time but i guess
1:09:00
looking back i would say my experience
1:09:03
nice
1:09:04
and what would be your greatest
1:09:07
achievement would you say
1:09:12
um well i had a like kind of a few um
1:09:16
top three like third places um
1:09:21
especially one in enzo hyde i think it
1:09:23
was like 2017
1:09:26
where i was like quite close to
1:09:28
um
1:09:30
the win maybe like less than two
1:09:32
seconds but i would say probably like
1:09:35
2019 my third and lander had with cam
1:09:37
was on the podium as well but that was
1:09:39
made like more special because we're
1:09:41
both on there yeah so i guess that and
1:09:45
then the hardest always like makes it so
1:09:47
much better when people don't
1:09:49
when you're home for sure
1:09:51
what about those swiss national titles
1:09:56
well
1:09:58
i mean
1:10:00
for sure the first one was like
1:10:02
really special but then
1:10:04
um before carina capillary who also was
1:10:07
like a top 15 top 10 racer came there's
1:10:11
like not that much competition
1:10:14
um so obviously
1:10:17
it's great to have like seven titles or
1:10:19
whatever but i don't think um that had
1:10:21
the same value for me because it's so
1:10:24
much harder to get a walker podium yeah
1:10:28
sure
1:10:28
oh next question
1:10:30
any regrets
1:10:33
um
1:10:37
well obviously i prefer not to be
1:10:38
injured and stuff but it's not really a
1:10:40
regret
1:10:41
it's just like how the how the sports is
1:10:44
uh i guess maybe
1:10:46
um that i didn't split from
1:10:48
cross-country to downhill earlier that's
1:10:49
a bit of regret to me
1:10:51
because
1:10:53
i think the sports really
1:10:55
fits my personality better and i would
1:10:57
have loved to do like the junior years
1:11:00
as
1:11:01
as a daniel racer
1:11:03
so what made what prompted the switch
1:11:08
that's a bit of a long story but try to
1:11:09
make it sure um
1:11:12
at the time
1:11:13
when you were 19 you're coming out from
1:11:15
the juniors and just straight to the
1:11:17
elite there was no club under 23
1:11:20
races or whatever so you like had the
1:11:22
double the time of racing so obviously
1:11:25
when that happened i
1:11:26
had to train a bit more and i trained
1:11:28
maybe too much and i was like in
1:11:30
overtraining
1:11:31
yeah and
1:11:33
from that i'm kind of reactivated the
1:11:37
epstein-barr
1:11:39
virus which is like the mono
1:11:41
yeah that i had like for four or five
1:11:44
years back and that came
1:11:46
for i don't know what reason my immune
1:11:48
system just broke down
1:11:49
and so all these symptoms came back and
1:11:52
i think that had a big impact on my body
1:11:54
and
1:11:56
i tried one two years to like get back
1:11:59
into training and but i ki i kept like
1:12:02
getting sick and it was just like
1:12:03
horrible so
1:12:05
i
1:12:06
gave up
1:12:07
everything that had to do with endurance
1:12:08
and a lot of like training in hours and
1:12:10
just tried to ride my back for fun
1:12:13
ended up doing the daniel race and i
1:12:15
really liked it but then
1:12:16
i started like that
1:12:18
cool
1:12:20
and what's your favorite memory is it
1:12:22
that podium with carrie
1:12:26
i think it's her world title
1:12:28
yeah
1:12:29
yeah i think so
1:12:31
because i was like
1:12:33
it can be a bit of both i think a world
1:12:35
tattoo was like a house i had such a
1:12:37
horrible time that weekend like
1:12:40
getting
1:12:41
my knee that was like fixed
1:12:43
broken again a third time in hcl i was
1:12:46
just like oh my god when is it gonna end
1:12:49
and we both didn't really expect a lot
1:12:51
from that race she was just like okay
1:12:53
can just get this over with
1:12:57
literally before we start and then
1:13:00
she just stayed the day and for us for
1:13:02
like our country like this
1:13:04
i mean
1:13:05
the status of downhill and switzerland
1:13:07
he made some such a big difference i
1:13:08
think it was probably my favorite memory
1:13:11
that was really cool nice yeah
1:13:15
so
1:13:16
your your best run of your career
1:13:18
[Music]
1:13:20
which room are you most proud of or
1:13:22
most happy with um
1:13:25
i think it would be probably
1:13:29
at what champs in montana 2019 i got
1:13:31
fifth but
1:13:33
it was that year where everybody got
1:13:35
injured and then four worlds everybody
1:13:36
came back yeah
1:13:38
and two riders that wasn't they weren't
1:13:40
there the whole season tony and miriam
1:13:44
got first and second but i got fifth and
1:13:46
i was only five second backs on the
1:13:48
title and montana is a pretty hard track
1:13:51
so sure um i think that's where i like
1:13:54
because my season was hard i had like a
1:13:56
shoulder injury
1:13:58
and
1:13:59
i had to overcome a lot of stuff
1:14:01
especially on that track
1:14:03
and i think i was really proud of my run
1:14:06
back then and even like
1:14:07
maybe i'm told yeah you did a really
1:14:09
great run and look really good so i
1:14:11
think
1:14:12
even though it wasn't my best result
1:14:13
with the fifth i think
1:14:15
um it probably was one of my best
1:14:17
friends
1:14:18
nice that's cool
1:14:21
so what's the best run you think you've
1:14:22
ever seen
1:14:25
well we talked we talked about i think
1:14:27
that's pretty clear to me we talked
1:14:28
about champion
1:14:30
i think
1:14:31
when i witnessed uh well chance trump
1:14:34
and danny hart coming down i was like
1:14:36
one thing i've probably never seen well
1:14:38
obviously again
1:14:39
like
1:14:40
the way
1:14:41
he wrote and like how hard it was
1:14:45
and he made it look so easy and i was
1:14:47
like really impressive
1:14:49
um
1:14:51
i was also really impressed by racial
1:14:52
attitudes when in entire day i think
1:14:54
what words um she smashed the field and
1:14:59
only the line that she did in the rock
1:15:01
garden
1:15:02
like the dub even the like half of the
1:15:04
men were not doing it like straight down
1:15:06
with a lot of very loud speed and it's
1:15:08
pretty risky line so i was just like wow
1:15:10
this is amazing
1:15:12
yeah so i guess yeah
1:15:15
the danny hart runs just still like
1:15:17
every kind of six months or something it
1:15:19
will come up on facebook and it's still
1:15:21
something there's very few things i've
1:15:23
would watch like so many times and you
1:15:26
watch it and it still gives me
1:15:27
goosebumps now it's just
1:15:30
it is like the probably the defining
1:15:33
video of downhill for me yeah for sure
1:15:36
yeah
1:15:37
and you were dead when you're there like
1:15:39
i remember i was in the finishing area
1:15:42
and it was pouring down and we could
1:15:43
barely see the screen because it was
1:15:45
pouring so much but everybody was
1:15:46
shouting and looking at the times we
1:15:49
were like is that even true like is it
1:15:50
that timing were working
1:15:52
and then you did this whip and the end
1:15:54
and everybody
1:15:55
was just like
1:15:56
what the hell just happened and i was
1:15:58
really like really
1:16:01
yeah it was crazy
1:16:04
um right next one's not so positive
1:16:06
biggest crash
1:16:10
oh had a lot of questions
1:16:12
but actually probably probably
1:16:14
statistically i probably have a really
1:16:17
bad statistic in crashes and injuries
1:16:20
because
1:16:21
um i was talking about my
1:16:23
like one of the young kids was like
1:16:25
nothing so young and he was 25 but he's
1:16:27
still like
1:16:28
um try to get into like walker bracing
1:16:31
and stuff and he was like well you never
1:16:32
crashed and i was like no you crash a
1:16:34
lot but i like as soon as
1:16:37
i stop crashing so much with the years
1:16:39
but
1:16:40
when i do then
1:16:42
a lot of things happen um
1:16:44
i would say probably the one in maribor
1:16:46
in 2019 where i did my ac drone in my
1:16:49
shoulder
1:16:50
um
1:16:52
it was at the axis cup
1:16:54
and we were going kind of around the big
1:16:56
rock garden but still kind of in it so
1:16:58
obviously had a lot of speed
1:16:59
because it was a kind of straighter
1:17:02
and it was a little a kind of little
1:17:04
rock pile that you could like double
1:17:07
before exiting
1:17:09
and i was always doing that i think
1:17:10
wasn't one of the only girls that
1:17:13
was doing it but then
1:17:15
one of the time i did it i just like
1:17:17
slightly touched my front wheel on it
1:17:20
so it made me go with the bars and then
1:17:22
i crashed like over the bars full speed
1:17:25
down that like shoot where you exit the
1:17:27
world garden so it was horrible
1:17:31
and i was like really
1:17:33
lucky that i didn't like hurt my head or
1:17:35
whatever yeah so that's probably one of
1:17:38
the hardest one for sure and worst
1:17:40
injury
1:17:41
or hardest injury to get over which
1:17:44
might be
1:17:45
acl underneath that's like the hardest
1:17:47
thing and probably like my second one
1:17:49
because my first one after in whistler
1:17:53
um
1:17:54
i don't know i didn't really know what
1:17:56
was going on so i was just like oh
1:17:58
and then obviously then after five
1:18:00
months i could ride again but the second
1:18:03
one you just know
1:18:05
how long it is
1:18:07
and i don't know my my right knee was
1:18:09
just harder it's still like bothering me
1:18:11
right now it's still not like 100
1:18:14
percent or like you never be understand
1:18:15
but it's still like not very
1:18:17
good i can't really bend my knee
1:18:19
properly so
1:18:20
that's really annoying
1:18:22
then try to get better but i guess time
1:18:24
will tell if i can kneel one day again
1:18:32
so what's the biggest feature you
1:18:34
remember from a track that's like
1:18:36
really kind of psyched you out
1:18:40
did you hit the big uh red bull gap at
1:18:42
leo gang at world champs yeah
1:18:44
yeah i did nice before i
1:18:47
crashed and or like i i did my even
1:18:50
crash actually when i did my knee at
1:18:52
worlds but yeah i did it but i was like
1:18:54
in the way it was really scary oh yeah
1:18:57
because you will like come and use your
1:19:00
speed and you have to like pedal on it
1:19:02
and hop so that was like pretty
1:19:05
yeah it was pretty scary but once you do
1:19:07
it you're like okay well
1:19:09
it's kind of okay i guess
1:19:12
um that triple and snowshoe at the end
1:19:14
where there's like lots of girls crashed
1:19:16
this year
1:19:17
um i didn't practice in qualifying but i
1:19:20
didn't do it on my lap my very last run
1:19:23
because i was like oh god
1:19:26
then
1:19:26
yeah the line into it
1:19:29
was like kind of a little rut
1:19:31
formed and
1:19:33
like it was kind of slippery so that's
1:19:34
what happened to just blew it she's
1:19:36
coming and then a little bit too fast
1:19:38
slid and couldn't like hop for it
1:19:41
so
1:19:42
it seemed easy but then if you got it
1:19:44
wrong it would be so devastating like
1:19:46
what would happen to you so
1:19:48
i did it like a couple of times in
1:19:50
practice and i did it in my restaurants
1:19:53
as well for the first race and also
1:19:55
qualifying but then i was just like no
1:19:56
like for my last run i won't do it
1:19:58
because
1:19:59
if i crash my brain that on my very last
1:20:01
walk up right now i would not be very
1:20:04
ideal
1:20:05
yeah that this not very
1:20:07
big but like i think it was not really
1:20:10
made for that so i guess people started
1:20:12
tripling it and they won't be like okay
1:20:14
well
1:20:15
it's just
1:20:16
scary do you think i remember the fir
1:20:19
2019 with for the first year in snowshoe
1:20:21
i think marine was the only woman who
1:20:24
was doing it is that right and then do
1:20:26
you think that's kind of like a sign of
1:20:28
how far the
1:20:29
women's racing has come very quickly
1:20:32
that this year there were
1:20:34
a lot more yeah or was it easier this
1:20:36
year than um
1:20:38
well in 2019 i was there the whole time
1:20:41
i
1:20:42
i was there for 20 minutes
1:20:44
seeing if i could actually do it yeah
1:20:46
and i think it was kind of the same
1:20:49
like the boys said it was the same yeah
1:20:52
but i guess it's worse this year because
1:20:54
like you said the corner before it
1:20:56
started chewing up
1:20:57
so you kind of slid as you hit the
1:21:00
corner whereas exactly i don't remember
1:21:01
it being like that in 2019 you just
1:21:04
turned and jumped because i've been less
1:21:06
people were doing it but i yeah i think
1:21:08
i was there for 20 minutes 2019 and i
1:21:10
was just like how am i going to do this
1:21:12
and i didn't do it at the end not once
1:21:14
and then there
1:21:15
um
1:21:16
we're just following some people and i
1:21:19
ended up doing it like
1:21:20
a bunch of times so i think it shows and
1:21:23
like a lot of people did it in the race
1:21:25
runs as well so it shows how far then
1:21:28
the woman's feelings become
1:21:29
for sure what she what's your process
1:21:32
emmy
1:21:33
if you come up to something like that
1:21:35
forgetting over features
1:21:36
what what's what do you think is the
1:21:38
best way to
1:21:39
deal with
1:21:40
it um
1:21:43
well
1:21:44
i guess
1:21:45
you kind of need to look some people
1:21:47
ride it well and then when you feel like
1:21:49
there's some people running especially
1:21:51
if there's a girl doing it then you have
1:21:53
like that faith okay i can do it as well
1:21:55
because my my speed is going to be the
1:21:57
same
1:21:58
you can discuss it i like to discuss it
1:22:00
with other people that did it and then
1:22:02
especially not bernard because he's
1:22:04
going to tell me how easy it is and it's
1:22:06
not going to be easy at all for me so
1:22:08
some people that have actually like kind
1:22:09
of idea
1:22:11
um
1:22:12
that is still a hard feature and the
1:22:14
timing
1:22:15
must be must be good and then just
1:22:18
follow someone in that i trust and that
1:22:20
time was kami so i just she followed her
1:22:22
teammate in and the
1:22:24
run after i followed her in
1:22:27
and if you don't feel it don't pull
1:22:29
straight just look at the speed and
1:22:31
then maybe when you feel like it's the
1:22:33
right time just try it
1:22:35
cool yeah good advice
1:22:38
okay so favorite ever bike
1:22:43
do you have a bike that stands out in
1:22:45
your memory that obviously um
1:22:48
well obviously the world's bike that we
1:22:50
get done i always like something so cool
1:22:53
yeah and my last one especially
1:22:56
so
1:22:57
it was like a pivot phoenix 29er
1:23:01
um with
1:23:03
that red
1:23:04
and then kind of orange crimson color
1:23:07
that was like for i still have it i
1:23:09
don't think i'm gonna get another bike
1:23:11
this year because i want to keep this
1:23:12
one as people i was like oh can i run a
1:23:15
custom color this year though like yeah
1:23:16
yeah i don't care because i don't want
1:23:18
to go back to like a gray one or
1:23:20
something that's so cool
1:23:22
obviously with like all the details and
1:23:24
like there is um on the top tube like
1:23:28
a little
1:23:29
like not like a little thing with like
1:23:31
written rally soul and my first world
1:23:33
champs in the last four champs
1:23:36
and
1:23:36
yeah i think it's just beautiful on your
1:23:38
brides very well and it's about actually
1:23:40
is a lot of fun also in bike park so if
1:23:43
i'm not gonna race a lot of races
1:23:46
i might do a couple but if i just
1:23:49
do for fun i can ride a bike also in the
1:23:51
background and have lots of fun nice
1:23:53
what's your
1:23:55
favorite thing about racing
1:23:59
um
1:24:01
well i guess it's um
1:24:04
getting
1:24:05
that and it's like a low um i don't know
1:24:07
it's like a little circus everybody like
1:24:09
comes from all these different
1:24:12
parts of the world and get together and
1:24:13
then
1:24:14
we all do our thing for a week and
1:24:17
enjoy each other's company and
1:24:19
like race and give all and then party
1:24:22
and then
1:24:23
go back to wherever we come from so
1:24:25
that's like a little bit of a crazy
1:24:28
concept but when you don't do it anymore
1:24:31
it's kind of um
1:24:33
yeah it's it's kind of hard and i hope i
1:24:35
can still go to the racing and but it's
1:24:37
not the same when you're not making it
1:24:38
you're part of it but not in the same
1:24:40
way
1:24:41
but seeing everyone and travel with the
1:24:43
team and get to know the people
1:24:46
that love biking
1:24:48
yeah it's
1:24:49
just the best
1:24:51
cool what's your least favorite thing
1:24:53
about racing
1:24:58
stress like oh it's so annoying when you
1:25:01
when you just like it's a stress build
1:25:02
up and it gets worse and worse and worse
1:25:04
until your race run
1:25:06
and
1:25:08
that period of time
1:25:10
after your warm-up until you
1:25:13
cross that the gate you go off the gate
1:25:16
that's like my worst
1:25:18
feeling ever you don't have to have
1:25:20
breakfast at six a.m in the morning
1:25:23
when all you want to do is sleep
1:25:26
yeah that's
1:25:28
that's for sure money is very reasonable
1:25:31
do you think that um
1:25:33
part of the reason crossing the line
1:25:34
feels so good is because that stress is
1:25:36
gone
1:25:37
oh yeah for sure
1:25:40
and even it's like even crossing like
1:25:42
even like going through the beam at the
1:25:44
top it's just like
1:25:46
then or it's like a relief then you just
1:25:49
need to execute what you planned
1:25:51
and ride your bike
1:25:53
if you get it or not the way you want it
1:25:56
i mean you still your stress is still
1:25:58
gone so yeah that's the best moment
1:26:03
okay next one
1:26:05
what's the thing you'll miss most about
1:26:07
not racing more corpses and not racing
1:26:09
anymore
1:26:12
a bit like like you said like
1:26:15
be at the finish area and share
1:26:17
like the buzz that you had on your run
1:26:19
with your friends that also raised and
1:26:21
you know like when you go oh and i
1:26:23
forgot about this mirror and actually i
1:26:25
almost crashed there and all these
1:26:27
little things that you share with each
1:26:28
other people that don't like no racing
1:26:32
and see that they must think me
1:26:34
completely that's like
1:26:36
the way we talk after a run is like
1:26:39
it's a little bit insane people are
1:26:42
completely crazy but
1:26:44
it's just like
1:26:45
yeah the relief that you feel when you
1:26:47
like can execute a run that you want it
1:26:49
that's like a feeling that
1:26:51
is really important then for an athlete
1:26:54
but also sharing
1:26:56
[Music]
1:26:59
oh
1:27:00
is that really
1:27:03
might have lost dummy yeah
1:27:05
yeah are you there
1:27:07
sorry i've lost you a little bit though
1:27:09
yeah yeah i think we're back now let's
1:27:10
go
1:27:11
but uh i was just gonna say
1:27:13
like
1:27:14
some some riders come down and
1:27:17
they
1:27:18
come into the finish area and then they
1:27:20
disappear
1:27:21
you are from what i see on tv you are
1:27:24
always there in the finish area cheering
1:27:26
people on clapping etc
1:27:29
is that a conscious thing
1:27:31
do you do you consciously stay there or
1:27:33
do you just love it or
1:27:35
have there been times when you've
1:27:36
disappeared
1:27:38
no i never i don't think i ever
1:27:40
disappeared maybe at the beginning when
1:27:42
i started i was like
1:27:44
maybe came in a little bit with my
1:27:46
cross-country background like a bit too
1:27:48
competitive and
1:27:50
then i couldn't really have it when some
1:27:52
some people were beating me that i don't
1:27:54
think must have beat me or something
1:27:57
but
1:27:58
i had to learn quickly that's not the
1:28:00
way it works in downhill because if you
1:28:02
get so hard
1:28:05
it's obvious it's just never gonna get
1:28:07
better
1:28:07
so
1:28:09
and thanks to also my teammate
1:28:11
especially at pivot that was just like
1:28:13
had
1:28:14
such a different
1:28:15
like perspective about racing
1:28:18
i i could just like enjoy it and even if
1:28:21
i didn't have a great one i could learn
1:28:23
from all the others coming down and
1:28:25
shared a good moment with them and then
1:28:26
leave with like
1:28:28
i don't know just a more balanced
1:28:31
like and just have peace of mind and not
1:28:33
be completely like worried and
1:28:35
and miserable for like two weeks yeah
1:28:38
for sure it's a really positive way of
1:28:40
looking at it okay so what thing won't
1:28:43
you miss
1:28:46
well
1:28:47
risking your life
1:28:50
risking your life for like
1:28:53
no i mean it's fun don't get me wrong
1:28:55
it's time to like go at the limit and
1:28:57
stuff but sometimes you don't feel like
1:28:58
it and these moments where
1:29:01
came even more and more often towards
1:29:04
the end of my career when i was just
1:29:05
like this is ridiculous like
1:29:08
so do you think that's because the do
1:29:11
you think that's because the pay
1:29:13
you know the the increase in talent in
1:29:16
the women's field
1:29:17
is pushing you to go faster
1:29:19
or do you think that was just you
1:29:20
getting a little bit older and
1:29:24
well it's a bit of both i think but
1:29:27
definitely the level like we said about
1:29:29
um snowshoe it showed like
1:29:33
um
1:29:34
yeah i think i got like a seventh in
1:29:36
snowshoe and i didn't do the triple and
1:29:39
i wrote like
1:29:41
like
1:29:42
we did we can't really compare the times
1:29:44
but like i don't think i wrote better at
1:29:46
all
1:29:47
and
1:29:48
yeah i got the set i'm stupid and and
1:29:50
i'm studying and
1:29:52
i felt like
1:29:54
my runs were like
1:29:56
certainly not worse and
1:29:59
especially in my board i was just like
1:30:00
what the hell like what i need to do
1:30:03
and
1:30:04
the thing is it's not like
1:30:06
one section or two section anymore you
1:30:08
do mistakes it's like you lose time
1:30:09
everywhere a little bit so you can't
1:30:11
really do anything
1:30:14
unless writing everywhere a bit faster
1:30:16
and that's the thing that was like
1:30:17
confusing to me because
1:30:20
and that's all the thing i stopped
1:30:21
because then you start to make silly
1:30:23
choices about like trying to go so much
1:30:26
faster and then you just crash like a
1:30:28
crash remember in practice it's really
1:30:29
hard and then
1:30:31
i was just like i was lucky that i
1:30:33
wasn't bad i was injured or something
1:30:34
but i was just like you felt good to
1:30:36
like go on the limit but on the other
1:30:38
hand you're like
1:30:39
this is not
1:30:41
yeah gonna make me go any faster if i do
1:30:43
this type of stuff yeah
1:30:45
so last two questions
1:30:48
one of them's a little bit fun what's
1:30:49
your favorite curse word
1:30:53
um
1:31:00
that's probably the one i say the most
1:31:02
but um
1:31:04
yeah i guess we'll stick to that no
1:31:07
english curse word
1:31:09
cool and last question on on the list
1:31:12
here is the future
1:31:14
what you're up to what are you doing
1:31:17
um yeah so i
1:31:19
like we
1:31:20
i don't know if you mentioned it but
1:31:21
yeah we i just came back from america
1:31:23
and i was
1:31:25
in phoenix uh people cycles headquarters
1:31:28
and so there's still going to be an
1:31:30
ambassador to them
1:31:31
um i might
1:31:33
um maybe go to crack quirks do some
1:31:36
racing there if i feel like it maybe
1:31:39
national champs
1:31:40
because there's not a lot of girls in
1:31:42
switzerland and i want to kind of like
1:31:43
set an example that
1:31:45
there's still going to be a lot of girls
1:31:47
and try to push people to come
1:31:49
um
1:31:52
i might get involved when you kind of
1:31:53
need to see with the european um
1:31:56
headquarters of favor where they need
1:31:57
from me but kind of be there like a
1:32:00
person to help also with like the
1:32:02
younger athletes and pivo in the future
1:32:04
we don't have really a set program yet
1:32:06
but i that's kind of what direction i
1:32:08
want to go on maybe like the young
1:32:11
privateers
1:32:12
and kind of be that um person or contact
1:32:15
person that they can like rely on before
1:32:18
they get like a factory team or whatever
1:32:21
and
1:32:22
yeah
1:32:24
i'm getting into some coaching um i've
1:32:26
got a psychology degree so i'm working
1:32:29
with some athletes at home
1:32:32
and also coach some very young kids at
1:32:34
home
1:32:35
um
1:32:36
so yeah
1:32:37
and i'm gonna be teaching primary school
1:32:39
like i always do
1:32:41
a little bit for the money side because
1:32:43
it's
1:32:44
more all fun and jokes being on the bike
1:32:46
industry but it's not very well paid so
1:32:49
you do it for the vlog and
1:32:51
and then you kind of need to make some
1:32:53
money as well but i like working with
1:32:55
kids so it's good it's a good job
1:32:58
so there's two questions linking to that
1:33:00
last one the
1:33:01
the future question what what profession
1:33:03
other than your own would you like to
1:33:05
attempt what would you like to have a go
1:33:07
at
1:33:09
um
1:33:10
well
1:33:12
like i said i was i was coaching some
1:33:14
some young kids so i i do them like the
1:33:17
mental aspect but i'm also kind of
1:33:20
getting into and i guess i had a lot of
1:33:22
experience but i don't really have like
1:33:23
a degree for that as i try to be like a
1:33:26
physical coach yeah so i could totally
1:33:28
see myself trying to like get into that
1:33:30
and maybe do
1:33:32
um
1:33:33
yeah some courses
1:33:34
yeah um
1:33:36
my dad did all of them but i don't want
1:33:38
to be i don't want to do what my dad
1:33:40
does but i guess i really like to coach
1:33:44
young younger athletes so we'll see if i
1:33:46
get into that or not but yeah i could
1:33:48
definitely try and what profession would
1:33:50
you not like to do what
1:33:54
oh
1:33:55
everything that has to do with money
1:33:57
like
1:33:58
finance something taxes
1:34:01
or like
1:34:03
i don't know law enforcement
1:34:06
the the people that come i don't know
1:34:07
the name meaning the people that come
1:34:09
and um
1:34:11
like go to your car when they're parked
1:34:13
warm and it just like
1:34:15
put you some fines yeah traffic water
1:34:18
sunday because yeah yeah on a sunday
1:34:20
because you're like that much beside
1:34:22
there yeah joyless joyless job exactly
1:34:25
that's exactly not what i want
1:34:28
well that's it emmy uh thank you thank
1:34:30
you for making the time to come on on
1:34:32
the pod so those are the 20 questions
1:34:34
before you go there's a couple of things
1:34:35
i wanted to chat with you about it the
1:34:37
first one is we had an amazing season
1:34:39
finale in short snowshoe if you were a
1:34:42
betting woman who would you money be on
1:34:44
for 2022
1:34:48
that's a hard one
1:34:50
yeah i think it's gonna be probably like
1:34:53
the tightest season
1:34:55
you ever seen
1:34:56
um
1:34:57
because
1:34:58
i mean
1:34:59
we've seen from snowshoe like
1:35:01
and also valdisole um
1:35:04
there's a few people that had um
1:35:06
problems this year bali and miriam did
1:35:09
kind of a lot of mistakes yeah
1:35:11
even though they got like while he got
1:35:13
the overall i think she she crashed a
1:35:14
lot
1:35:15
and some places she's not supposed to
1:35:18
cam
1:35:19
from me had like this has the steepest
1:35:21
learning curve
1:35:23
and yeah she was the most consistent
1:35:26
yeah yeah and even though like i think
1:35:27
she can she progressed from her year to
1:35:29
another so much so
1:35:31
it won't maybe be as much but still like
1:35:34
she has the steepest
1:35:35
uh curve to him and potential to improve
1:35:38
and then
1:35:40
we've seen from tani from time to time
1:35:42
was like excellence and i think if she
1:35:44
can get her confidence that she'll be so
1:35:46
dangerous because she wants it probably
1:35:48
more than anyone
1:35:50
and then marine
1:35:53
who like suddenly came out of nowhere on
1:35:55
her favorite track in in valdisole
1:35:58
she was also there on the podium um
1:36:02
in snowshoe and she
1:36:03
she like
1:36:05
gets back to 100 i think it would be so
1:36:09
hard for
1:36:10
like to get into the fight to like mix
1:36:12
it up with those five yeah i'm kind of
1:36:16
happy i'm not racing anymore because i'm
1:36:18
like oh who am i gonna beat who is it
1:36:21
who is gonna throw it away because this
1:36:23
year i felt like
1:36:25
there's a
1:36:26
kind of mistakes but at some other some
1:36:28
of the runs on the races there's like no
1:36:30
one was making any mistakes and i think
1:36:32
we're gonna see some of that next year
1:36:34
and it's gonna be really exciting
1:36:36
and
1:36:37
in the men's
1:36:42
all the frenchies
1:36:43
now um i think the press gonna be really
1:36:46
angry about what happened and i think
1:36:48
it's gonna train like a maniac and so
1:36:49
will amore i think the people got
1:36:53
who
1:36:53
were so close to having something like
1:36:55
the perella and then kind of throw it
1:36:57
away and some sense i think he would
1:36:59
like
1:37:01
he's angry in general so i think he's
1:37:02
gonna be even more angry
1:37:05
sorry
1:37:07
and then amore is getting back to it
1:37:09
um and he will
1:37:11
he's such a talented writer so i think
1:37:13
he will be really hard too but i want to
1:37:15
see burden on the podium again
1:37:18
and he's not going to quit until he does
1:37:19
something like that so he said oh i
1:37:21
really want to retire with you but i
1:37:23
need to win a race first
1:37:25
so
1:37:26
i think he has the skills um he just
1:37:29
needs to put his mind into it because
1:37:31
brokers are something different but i
1:37:33
think he gets a really good run he could
1:37:35
do it
1:37:36
so yeah we'll see but for sure like this
1:37:40
i think
1:37:41
there's so many people that can win the
1:37:43
race insane and really excited to see
1:37:45
what's going what's going to happen cool
1:37:47
well women's downhills as we said is
1:37:49
probably in the best place it's ever
1:37:50
been the sport's maturing now and the
1:37:53
number of riders who can win a world cup
1:37:55
overall is increasing every year as
1:37:57
we've just said do you think we'll ever
1:37:59
see the level of dominance that rachel
1:38:02
displayed or ankara before her
1:38:05
do you think we'll ever see that again
1:38:09
i doubt it but you never know like i
1:38:11
mean valley is very young
1:38:13
and although there's like a lot of good
1:38:15
juniors
1:38:17
now especially first-year juniors that's
1:38:18
gonna be juniors still next year
1:38:21
like yankova and phoebe gayle they're
1:38:23
just really talented riders all around
1:38:26
and then there's more coming
1:38:28
um there's that young kiwi jenna hasting
1:38:31
there's just one crown quirks and she's
1:38:32
17 as well and she beat all the elites
1:38:34
so i think there's a lot of young
1:38:36
writers
1:38:37
almost as talented as valley that can
1:38:39
come and
1:38:40
and challenge her but you never know
1:38:43
when someone gets like a streak like
1:38:44
that some sometimes you have that
1:38:46
confidence that rachel had and then you
1:38:48
can't stop this person
1:38:50
until she stops herself so
1:38:52
um
1:38:54
i will doubt it but it could be like
1:38:56
that someone comes and have the
1:38:58
dominance again but
1:38:59
um
1:39:00
it'll be harder for sure than in
1:39:02
previous years yeah we talked last year
1:39:05
on our getting more women into racing
1:39:07
episode about things that could be done
1:39:08
to encourage that have you seen any
1:39:10
further developments
1:39:14
well i guess it's related to the juniors
1:39:16
we're talking about i mean um
1:39:19
i i know kind of know that uh yankovic
1:39:22
signed for a big brand next year i don't
1:39:24
think it's going to be a factoring thing
1:39:26
but still like a good
1:39:28
a good support team and then and then
1:39:30
should be always on for d and like all
1:39:32
these young athletes get kind of the
1:39:34
supports that deserve
1:39:36
and that makes a difference because when
1:39:38
you get to the elite and sometimes it's
1:39:39
hard to like qualify and stuff if you
1:39:42
don't have that support around you
1:39:44
you just might like say oh maybe that's
1:39:47
not for me and stuff
1:39:49
and like someone like anna newkirk who
1:39:52
that comes back into the top ten
1:39:54
but i had really bad years when like
1:39:56
kovid was hitting and she didn't know
1:39:58
what she was wanted to do and she was
1:40:00
like not that far behind bali when she
1:40:03
was a junior you know
1:40:05
and
1:40:06
yeah the environment that you're in
1:40:08
really makes a difference so
1:40:10
i mean
1:40:11
having that spot in the factory team and
1:40:14
actual money a dysentery that's another
1:40:16
step that maybe we
1:40:18
gonna get like we're gonna take it one
1:40:20
step at a time but i think the support
1:40:22
is definitely including
1:40:24
excellent well emily congratulations on
1:40:26
your career and thanks for making the
1:40:28
time to come on the pod and very best of
1:40:30
luck for the future
1:40:33
jack we're getting to the end of the
1:40:34
year the team rumors are pretty quiet
1:40:36
this season benoit's just told us he's
1:40:38
staying with uh door valley am have you
1:40:41
heard anything
1:40:43
um
1:40:44
i haven't heard too much to be honest
1:40:46
i'm trying to think
1:40:50
there's only two kind of top ten riders
1:40:52
i think that are up for contract and i
1:40:54
think
1:40:55
the rumors i've heard is lucas shorter
1:40:57
canyon oh yeah i have heard that to be
1:41:00
fair yeah and then um lori greenland
1:41:05
and jackson goldstone coming into the
1:41:07
syndicate yeah i think even my mum's
1:41:09
heard that one
1:41:11
that's the absolute dream team and that
1:41:13
greg laurie and jackson on saturday
1:41:16
yep right yeah that is that is cool
1:41:19
yeah well all those rumors are out there
1:41:21
on the internet as well i've checked so
1:41:23
we're not we're not breaking anything
1:41:24
they're not revealing anything that
1:41:25
people can't find already any one vision
1:41:28
rumors kicking around i believe dan's
1:41:30
sticking with you
1:41:31
yeah so dan's had an offer elsewhere but
1:41:34
he's he's he knows where he's bred's
1:41:35
buttered so he's staying put um which is
1:41:38
great obviously we love him the sponsors
1:41:40
love him and he loves it because so um
1:41:43
after that top 10 in maribor and a few
1:41:45
other things he's i already knew he had
1:41:47
that kind of speed around with him all
1:41:48
the time but he's showing everyone else
1:41:50
that he's got it and and importantly
1:41:51
shawnee can deliver it when the
1:41:53
pressure's on so you know
1:41:55
our aim is to is to improve the program
1:41:57
now and and keep getting bigger and
1:41:59
better so that we can help dan and other
1:42:01
riders to to keep doing that and lift
1:42:04
lift it and do it more
1:42:06
um consistently so um the team is
1:42:09
getting bigger next year i can tell you
1:42:10
that um we're going to be taking a
1:42:12
junior and excitingly we're going to be
1:42:13
taking our first female rider so cool
1:42:16
won't give you any more details of them
1:42:18
than that we're going to be taking an
1:42:19
extra mechanic um
1:42:22
so there'll be elliott and a second
1:42:24
mechanic sam
1:42:25
um
1:42:26
elliot will be working full-time with
1:42:28
dan and i'll have have a new mechanic
1:42:30
myself um
1:42:32
we're gonna also going to be taking on
1:42:34
staff um to help us out with additional
1:42:36
things because i can only be in one
1:42:37
place at once and at the moment i need
1:42:39
to be in five places at once and it's
1:42:40
not possible so
1:42:42
my good friend jim hirst shout out to
1:42:45
jimmy used to ride for the team he's now
1:42:47
going to be coming on as my right-hand
1:42:48
man with
1:42:50
the coaching stuff um
1:42:52
and the team stuff i have to do and then
1:42:55
uh another staff member who i won't
1:42:56
reveal just yet who's gonna be coming on
1:42:58
to to help out with various things so
1:43:00
we're gonna be a uci team again um we're
1:43:02
getting bigger we're taking more riders
1:43:04
and it's all geared towards making
1:43:07
things better for the riders we're not
1:43:08
doing it for how big is our truck and
1:43:11
how big's our shot from um we're doing
1:43:13
it to try and hunt down results for
1:43:15
myself for other for all of our riders
1:43:17
and uh
1:43:18
and show off the sponsors when we do it
1:43:20
so it's exciting cool well you're
1:43:21
keeping pretty busy with the gravity
1:43:23
school the portugal trip last season
1:43:25
looked fantastic
1:43:26
i think i saw you got a lot of those
1:43:27
planned for early next year is that
1:43:29
right
1:43:30
yeah so there's very little uh once the
1:43:32
weather turns in this country there's
1:43:34
very little you can do in terms of uh
1:43:37
good preparation the tracks are too
1:43:38
short it's too cold
1:43:40
um so basically we'll have
1:43:43
coaching camps in portugal available for
1:43:45
riders
1:43:47
january february and march and the march
1:43:49
ones are linked with races so anyone who
1:43:51
is interested in those can give me a
1:43:53
shout and i can send over the details we
1:43:54
are taking bookings for those now so
1:43:56
yeah it's really exciting
1:43:58
for the march ones we're offering
1:43:59
something that no team has ever done
1:44:02
before
1:44:02
um
1:44:04
gravity school riders who we coach are
1:44:06
going to be able to come out and be
1:44:07
coached for a few days and then they
1:44:09
will come to a national race
1:44:11
with the team they will be
1:44:13
with us in the pits they will ride with
1:44:15
us they will have access to the
1:44:16
mechanics they'll do track walks with
1:44:18
those line analysis with us they'll stay
1:44:20
with us in the accommodation they will
1:44:22
get the proper experience
1:44:24
and the idea behind that is they get all
1:44:26
that at the race but then also that
1:44:28
experience is at the start of the season
1:44:30
so everything they learn from it they
1:44:32
can then take into their 2022 race
1:44:34
season to see how the pros do it
1:44:37
excellent and is there like is it are
1:44:39
you trying to offer like a route through
1:44:41
from the gravity school to the team is
1:44:43
that the idea
1:44:44
not directly um the gravity school is my
1:44:47
coaching business and the team is the
1:44:49
professional race team but
1:44:52
i own and manage and i'm head coach at
1:44:54
the gravity school and i own and manage
1:44:57
the professional race team so
1:44:59
it kind of goes without saying that if i
1:45:02
see and coach someone who's got talent
1:45:04
and i have an opening in my race team
1:45:06
then
1:45:07
there's a chance that person will then
1:45:09
be given an opportunity to ride for the
1:45:11
race team if there's somebody who i've
1:45:13
never met
1:45:14
and all of a sudden they want to ride
1:45:17
for the race team but i've never ridden
1:45:18
with them never don't know them it's
1:45:20
less likely
1:45:21
that they're going to end up on the race
1:45:23
team that's
1:45:24
it's not
1:45:25
a specific
1:45:27
route to the team but obviously
1:45:30
obviously there's a link
1:45:31
it's it's going to be easier for someone
1:45:34
to get on the race team if i know where
1:45:35
they are and know how they ride so
1:45:38
should i keep believing is that is there
1:45:40
still a chance for me hey
1:45:43
never never write yourself off george
1:45:45
you're only as good as your last result
1:45:46
aren't you
1:45:48
exactly there you go there you go and
1:45:49
you beat binsy so
1:45:51
i think we all know where my strengths
1:45:52
lie
