How so? A new chain is a bunch of unused links

A bunch of links joined together from the factory using the bets tools/machines rather than a person in their garage using a chain tool to force pins in and out.

  • Everyone has same motor/battery so it will be used strategically to help win the race I suppose.

As long as the races are long enough that the battery doesn’t last for the whole race and you would need to use it strategically that is.

My current chain is made up of all the extra bits cut of previous chains

That is asking for trouble. I have had 2 chains snap in 20 years and 60,000 miles of fixed gear riding. Both within the last year and both chains that I had lengthened and shortened a number of times due to experimenting with gearing combinations, larger chainring/cogs…[Read more]

1/8 chain bought and fitted & now seems to be working fine.

Okay, so you had 1/8 freewheel then.

Be good to actually get a response from the OP after 2 days though wouldn’t it. What is the point of asking a question, getting loads of responses but then not posting again.

  • Basically, if you want to kill someone and get away with it, hit them with a car.

Yep, and that has always been the case. You may have to have your story very straight if it becomes knowledge that you knew the person/disliked the person and so on though otherwise more than a bit coincidental that the person you hit whilst driving was someone you…[Read more]

  • Living with another person is enough to drive anyone insane

Opposite for me. Living with someone is wha keeps me sane, if left to my own devices, with no-one to put me straight, for the last 20 years it wouldn’t have ended so well.

Yes, probably around 75 – 100 grams. Not a lot I agree but why add it for no benefit as 1/8 stuff is no cheaper?

I change my chain every Spring after around 3,000 miles per year and I change chain rings and rear cogs randomly based on what gearing I want (Summer versus winter) so how long it wears and if there would be any difference is a bit of…[Read more]

    No stronger than 3/32

Agree. They are just wider and therefore heavier. Pretty bad idea if starting from scratch as you will have heavier freewheel, chainring and chain for no benefit.

  • No, but we are still desperately trying to get into the same size jeans as when we were 20

I am still wearing the same size jeans (32/32) that I wore when I was 20. At 52 I am also the same weight (71kg) that I was at 20. As I said earlier, that should be the norm on a cycling forum…

  • The life decision should be finding something more worthwhile to do with your time that waste it playing computer games. You won’t look back when you are older and be glad that you spent 10,000 hours getting to level 200 on a compute game.

  • I am 52 and still wearing jeans and look nothing like Clarkson. As long as you are keeping fashionable with shoes and shirts, coats etc,. then jeans look fine.
Helps if you are also in good shape and don’t have a beer belly but on a cyclist forum being in good shape is a given….

I predict cummimgs will be out mid-year and johnson by year end.

They won’t be going any where this year. Next year some people will start to realise that life has got even shitter because of Brexit (but not many). A few years after that enough people will realise it to actually trouble Johnson.

  • I am not sure policing was ever able to deal with everything reported even before the cuts.
Spending time and money investigating drivers who drove a bit too close to another road user is never going to be a high priority unless they had so many staff they were all sitting around desperately finding something to do.

Sadly as a road cyclist I just…[Read more]

My money is on a faulty freewheel. If everything else is looks ok then the pawls inside the freewheel could be slipping. Replace the freewheel/sprocket

And if that is the case get a better freewheel if you are planning on riding much. The cheaper freewheels feel sloppy, have slow engagement and make knocking noises.
    Something like a Halo…[Read more]

  • kerley replied to the topic I have manflu in the forum Chat Forum 2 days ago

Unlikely. If you had actual flu then getting on t’internet to get boxset recommendations would be far down your list of priorities.

Tend to agree although Covid19 doesn’t seem to incapacitate all people to that level

No I’m pretty sure it’s not Covid-19 and just plain manflu

Have you got a home testing kit or something?

  • What’s unnatural for you might be just fine for someone else. Choice is great.

Exactly. I prefer very straight bars as find them more comfortable than bars with a sweep and I also have a noticeable saddle to bar drop.. I also find my titanium flat bars best for removing any finger numbness. I also have the saddle with the nose very slight up w…[Read more]

If we accept that this is happening and we can’t change it, how do I get to be one of the 1 out of 100 winners of Brexit?

You are too late now. You should have planned better, you knew it was coming.

  • kerley replied to the topic Single Speed help please .. in the forum Bike Forum 3 days ago

If you have a 1/8 freewheel and are using a 3/32 chain it would be very obvious from just looking at it as the chain won’t sit on the teeth properly and it wouldn’t be possible to ride it. If you have a BMX freewheel it is likely to be 1/8. You can also easily see the difference by looking at the width of the teeth on the freewheel compared to…[Read more]

  • I would just put the carbon fork on as buying a gravel frame and putting all the same parts on it (including the flat bars) would seem a pointless exercise – along with the fact the gravel bike is made for drops.

For a lot of peoples uses a rigid 29er with fast tyres on it is probably better than a gravel bike.
