  • Our excess insurance covers all rental companies apart from one. We don’t provide excess reimbursement for claims made as a result of rentals from GreenMotion. This is because we did some research and found that there was a much higher chance of being charged for damage (and a higher amount) by GreenMotion than with other rental…

AS above, unless interested in trading individual shares then either a fund or tracker. For direct online investing The Vanguard funds are probably the lowest cost trackers out there. I put 10K in the LifeStrategy 80 in Nov 2018. Up 17% at the moment.

If driving the coast Rd north from LA to SF don’t forget the elephant seals. They are only a few yards down from the roadside fence at the colony near Cambria/Hearst Castle. Looks like August is one of the quieter times but will stil be some there.

  • My gripe with BA is they won’t let me pay to choose seats. Looking at UK – SAn Francisco in October. At 6ft3 I find standard economy seats are very uncomfortable for long haul. Happy to pay for exit row seats but only BA Gold/Sivler/Bronze cardholders are allowed to book exit seats until shortly before the flight.

So do I book flights now but…[Read more]

  • will be a faff as the phone line comes in on the opposite side of the house to where the fibre comes in

As part of my installation the Vodaphone engineer (arrived 10m early) ran a phone line from the old BT socket (in a cuboard) under the floor to the far side of the living room where the TV sits. Involved him going into a fairly tight crawl…[Read more]

Don’t forget the big end of summer holiday is Labor Day Sept 7th. Everywhere wil be stoked that weekend. Worth considering.

With 25 days its a pity not to get in some of the empty roads in Nevada and come into Yosemite from the east at Lee Vining. I cycled through Yosemite on Labor weekend. Mobbed. But once on the back roads in Nevada it was back…[Read more]

  • I’ve cycled across the USA Great Plains through Kansas and eastern Colorado. A week or so without a hill. Feels like a grass ocean. It isn’t completely flat but is in places so close to totally flat I could only tell when I was reaching the top of a slight rise because there was a mast placed there. Wind direction was always more important than…[Read more]

Line installation is covered by the new company as far as I know. In our case there was an old BT box from 25 yes ago. He ran a line from there to where we wanted the new box for phone and broadband.

We got a new aerial installed. At apex of gable end of 3 bed semi. Ran cable nearly stabled to Sofia and in at other side of the house.…[Read more]

  • I had this exact problem. Solved by using mortar to give a slight angle for rain to run off. Then bitumen paint on angle and a foot up the wall

Other issue was there didn’t seem to be any dpc under the garage concrete slab. Two coats of bitumen paint on the floor and a foot up the inner wall stopped rising damp

  • With the track record of government in the devolved areas they already control there is no reason to think independence would mean any better govt of the rest.

Random example. Spent over a billion on a new Forth bridge which is still only 2 lanes each way so it hasn’t relieved congestion. You would think 1.35Bn would at least remove a bottleneck.

  • You must be earning a huge amount for it to make that much difference! Its 5% extra over £150 000 pa and a small amount extra ( due to lower thresholds) in the 40% rate

Don’t forget NI. It,s 12% until £50’000. So between £43’431 and £50k Scots pay 53% tax and NI. Add pension contributions and take home pay is around a third of earnings fro…[Read more]

You warm the earth and the water cycle runs faster.

ie More water moves more quickly in that never ending cycle from ocean to clouds to rain to rivers and back to the ocean.

Well that,s the theory. In practice the 1C of warming since the 19th century hasn,t shown any apparent trend in Englannd and Wales raainfall. THe fute? Who knows?

What the hell does that have to do with storm events and flash flooding?

That they aren,t caused by overall increasing rainfall?

  • irc replied to the topic A Bridge Too Far… in the forum Chat Forum 1 week ago

I take it the quoted costs (guesses) for the bridge don’t include upgrading the A76 and A77 to dual carriageway to cope with a doubling or trebling of traffic. So another few billion there. Chickenfeed.

Tunnelling industry warned that it must increase productivity to reduce costs

But I suspect if you go back 100 years those places flooded regularly, and will do for the next 100 years and more

Correct. Here’s a random example from a database of floods. An altlantic storm in 1916.

A few moments thought suggest there is no way this is financially workable. After all the channel tunnel was a boderline case when it connects a market of 60M and 300M. So why anyone thinks a bridge/tunnel which is technically more difficult due to water depth but only connects markets of 5M and 3M is worth the cost beggars belief.

This is nothing new. Back in the 1980s and 1990s I used to take reports of card fraud reported to the police in Glasgow. The procedure was – get a statement from the victim and a copy of their bank/credit card statements. Send to HQ. Once there 99% were filed with no further action. Now and then the fraud dept at HQ would join some dots and send…[Read more]
