It’s a great idea. The Yamaha/Öhlins 2wd Enduro / MX / street system was very good indeed, especially uphill, off-road) but probably failed in that arena because of market timing. It’s certainly a technology that is going to come back in motorcycling, so why not mountain biking.

  • I would thoroughly recommend Dan Carlin’s excellent 6 part podcast series Blueprint For Armageddon. He references a load of work I think most of which are linked on the podcast pages for each episode

I could quite happily listen to the full 18 hours or so in one go. Properly gripping.

Modern ABS is linked to the throttle and will tickle it open a tad when engine braking if it detects a wheel starting to slip.

Mine was 8mths old when I inherited her from my uncle. She was 90% trained as a full worker and her mum was an Irish sheep dog champion. When I brought her home she refused to come into the house as she’d been made to sleep on a pallet in a barn. She’s 9yrs old now.

Polaris’ vaguely water repellant AM trousers. Cheap too in their perpetual DFS-esque sale.

Having been to Ciclo Montana many times and always thinking: “I really wish I’d ridden here on my KTM” as Marco deftly threads the van along some precipitous mountain road, I’ve finally organised a motorbike trip to the Alpujarra in September. We’re going to get the bikes shipped to Malaga and get an AirBnB in somewhere like Pitres. We’ll then do…[Read more]

14mpg though, but I knew this

Strewth! That is low. I’d get that from the QV if I was being really naughty. Last tank saw 26 which was mainly school runs and around town. A guy on the forum is commuting on the m1 with his: 36 overall!

  • I occasionally use them. The taylors ones are ok, if you’re desparate fro m brew you can mash them repeatedly and make something that is almost but not quite unlike proper coffee. Sainsburys do their own Italian roast bag that is a good deal stronger. What is much better though are sainsburys own brand one cup filters – great for camping and bike…[Read more]

  • @yokaiser may I suggest heading to Hull and taking the Zeebrugge or Rotterdam crossing? DFDS’ ships are old, the crossing, food and drink expensive and it takes an absolute bloody age to unload bikes. They get stashed away on deck 6, via a series of ramps that can’t be moved until absolutely everything else is disembarked. You can spend up to an…[Read more]

  • I’ve done the route back from barcelona to Newcastle over two days having abandoned a tour as it started pi$$ing down. We stopped once outside Tours. Never, ever, again. The length of France on Peage in the rain on a 950sm must rank as the worst motorcycling experience of my life. I adore that bike, I truly do, but I would have given anything to b…[Read more]

Sky scanner sometimes works. Whenever I get sent somewhere odd (Tromsø is the latest challenge – I’ve got it down to 8hrs from Newcastle) I use Flightradar24 to work out actual departures and the destination airport’s own website as some often have traditional PDF timetables.

Thankfully the PHFs aren’t such a bargain / are in colours I don’t need, otherwise this could have caused trouble.

    @northwind that sounds superb.

Good luck kludging the wiring – it’s often amusing, particularly with modern service manuals that have the most rudimentary wiring diagrams. My old uno manual had pages and pages of revision diagrams covering every possible production run. The cinquecento had one set of drawings that were mainly completely wrong. T…[Read more]

Is that engine 2 k20s glued together with good will and mastic?

Stelvio QV is beautiful. Even Davide Cirone who HATES SUVs and even criticised the 500 abarth continuously for being too high and SUV-like thought it was great. It’s very, very expensive though.

  • I have no time for these people. The BPA are basically a front for the same sheisters that used to go and clamp people who dared to park outside dominos while they went to Steel’s cycles next door.

I escaped one of their “enforcement notifies” having been done for parking my motorbike in a car bay at a large shopping centre. Loaded with a pile…[Read more]

Mate had the 2.7. It had all the rare and very expensive engine issues. Replaced it with a new boxster last year, which is a brilliant vehicle.

  • Properly scary working conditions. Not sure what was more impressive, the lack of
