  • GavinB replied to the topic Wooden skis? Phwoar! in the forum Chat Forum 1 month ago

Almost all skis have wooden cores, with various woods giving differing characteristics. It’s just that giving them a top sheet or cap, protects the wood from chips, water ingress I guess.

Have fancied a pair of these for a few years, however don’t know how I’d feel, after paying £1,250 for them, when/if I scraped them on a…[Read more]

Such sad news – was one of my favourite bands in my late teens, although only ever saw them once, in Glasgow about 1987 or so.

Still get goosebumps thinking about hearing/watching Neil do his drum solo. He broke one of his sticks midway through (the spotlight just caught the broken bit of the stick flying off). He continued the solo WITH ONE…[Read more]

Well, to follow up on my previous question, I ended up getting a Deco 9+ mesh system. Set it up very quickly last night, after disconnecting various generations of powerlines, Apple Time Capsules, Airport Express and wi-fi boosters (if nothing else, my electric bill should be lower!)

The main thing it has definitely managed to do is bridge…[Read more]

  • In answer to the OP, yes it could be ridden on a CX/gravel bike, but IME it would not be ideal. Some of the techy/rocky bits can get pretty slippy in the ice/snow/mud where some bigger tyres and at least a little bit of suspension will help with grip.

I’ve seen guys doing it on CX bikes, but they’ve never been that fast and they’ve walked/carried…[Read more]

  • GavinB replied to the topic 2019 General Election in the forum Chat Forum 2 months ago

Postal voted last week, and found out yesterday that even MrsB (not Scottish) will be voting SNP for the first time, as it’s pretty much a two-horse race in our constituency between them and the incumbent Tories (in by a slim majority in 2017)!

Progress sometimes happens in small steps, although tbh I’m not at all optimistic about the wider…[Read more]

Powerlink user here, but as we have a thick, granite wall splitting our long, thin house in two (which it turns out also splits the electric circuits), I’m only able to use the Powerlinks to cover one end of the house and the garage (for Zwift etc).

I’ve got a borrowed Wi-Fi repeater, which I’m using to try to boost the signal into the other half…[Read more]

  • We got one of ours a Huawei Band 2 Pro a while back from Argos for £40. It was pretty much ideal for him, in that it tracked HR, sleep, steps as well as runs, swims or bike rides with its own GPS.

Many of the cheaper ones (and some of the more expensive ones) rely on the GPS on a linked smartphone in order to track activities, whereas this one…[Read more]

    Perfect, thanks!

Thanks for heads-up on BK (similar position to OP). I’ve got QA BT3 bookshelf speakers, but it only has a single Subwoofer out port – is that still ok for the BK units?

  • Not IME. My Reverb on my main bike got screwed by when getting hung off the back of a Nevis Range gondola on an uplift day there last year. A new IFP fixed it, but still makes me nervous doing the same again (with a reverb).

  • Does the One-Up suffer from lifting the bike by the seat when compressed like the Reverb does?

Not that I’ve found (still have a couple of Reverbs in use)

Can the V2 be reduced in travel more than the 10-20mm they quote on the site? I’m looking to get as long a post as possible to future proof it and just shim it down to suit current i…

Next year, full EVs will become the new tax dodge, if it bothers you that much.

Oops, forgot about that, you’re correct.

We are still a long way behind when it comes to incentivising zero-emission though, particularly when compared to, say Norway.

Test drove an e-Niro at the weekend, and was really impressed with it – very smooth and pretty nippy. The move from my current car, a Mazda 6 estate would need a bit of adjustment though.

Not looking at any of the hybrids for the reasons already stated above – they are a tax dodge.

  • Buying a licence for standalone Office 2010 package would not be the best option IMO, unless that also includes updates, but even then it’ll go out of date very quickly and still pose a load of restrictions on what you can do.

Office365 (free for students) or arguably better GSuite (free for up to 15GB of cloud storage) is the way to go. Sync…[Read more]

  • Q: Is it a pre-requisite to have read the book, in order to understand what is going on with the TV series?

MrsB and I tried to watch it last night, and after about 20 mins eventually admitted to each other that neither of us had the slightest idea what was going on. Visually stunning, but I struggled to piece together the plot lines.

    Is it…[Read more]

  • Ours have had access to an older iPad since they were about 5. It’s pretty much locked down so that they can access CBeebies and various educational games (maths ones are pretty cool), as well as watching films on longer journeys. They can’t access t’internet, YouTube etc.

Pretty easy to set up the restrictions on an iPad, which are then…[Read more]
