  • Don’t get too excited about shimano – the on/off thing you can get used to but with my XTs (8000) I have to do a mini bleed once a month to get the air out. Not convinced by the mineral oil when in heavy use either. Did a full bleed before Morzine last year, then had to replace my brown oil a couple of weeks later.

    Hope or trickstuff??

@chakaping You are right the Meta TR looks great, has lots of good reviews and comes stacked with great gear. I could even find a flimsy excuse to go to Andorra and pick it up! The chainstay thing is mainly because I have long legs and when I bung the saddle up the kinked seat tubes tend to mean the actual seat angle is very slack. It is exactly…[Read more]

Looks lovely @slackboy but once on the configurator I got to £4k before adding bars, grips, saddle dropper etc! So defo too spendy

Tallboy was on the list but when you look at the spec for the cash the others beat it hands down. Having said that it would still be worth a demo….

@slackboy – I like your thinking regarding gates and stiles. Devon riding has plenty of those to deal with so I will consider that. Trying to find a Giant demo in XL at the moment. Light and capable…

So the list to look at – Reactor alloy with the Pike, Trek Fuel ex 8 with some swaps and additions, Giant Trance 29 1, Commencal meta TR, Cotic Flaremax and Orange stage 4 or 5. Love the Starling but too much for me! The Swarf maybe but reckon I would bust the budget badly! Nearly got carried away on the Bird site with the AM9 but should wait fo…[Read more]

  • Been using BZ optics bifocal photochromics which are great but only for the reading bit. Mate of mine wear contacts and then the same specs so he can read his phone and mend stuff. Dual eyewear also do shades with the same idea for proper sunny days

  • Another mudhugger vote – specially back end. For the front Crudcatcher and one of those neoprene jobs fro the forks works best.

Rahox – converted both my bikes and they seems to last and have great grip/stopping power in all conditions ( Devon slop included)

like the reactor but appears to be alloy only in 275

Thanks for the suggestions – riding more gnarly XC/trail and long days out ideally as exploring rather than bike parks is my thing, though with the geometry to be able to hoon down when I can. I love the T129 though I have upped the front end travel to 140 as I have long legs so end up sitting loads higher than the bars! Downsides are the seat…[Read more]

Solaris 2 is great allrounder but QR back end. Having said that mine might be up for sale but likely as full bike. What size are you looking for? Mines an XL so 6 ft up really!

So temptation is prpving too much. Looking to replace my T129RS with another 29 short travel trail bike. I do not want carbon so The Flaremax is option one, Commencal Meta TR Race is option 2. Any other suggestions for a metal framed bike with decent bits on – budget about £3.5k?

We went with Pure Mountains and have been back. Amazing trails, proper singletrack and not a groomed berm in sight. The farmhouse accom is great and it is a bit more civilised with great food and guiding – highly recommend here. Enduro mag visited and have an article in the latest edition too.

Just a massive recommend to watch this on red bull tv. Great look back and some lunacy on old bikes back in the day. Nutters and visionaries all in one.
