I have the the Planet X lobster gloves mentioned above and they really help (middle three fingers on right hand go white when cold). However, they are sized ‘too small’ IMHO.
I bought the Large and struggle to get them on. If I stop mid cold ride and take them off I can’t get them back on 🙁
Every other glove I have that fits well is a Large, but I would buy XL or above (if possible) if I bought another pairPosted 1 month ago | Go to post
Reply to: Why would you buy an ipad from Apple
I bought an ipad about 3 years ago from the Apple Store. I checked in JL and saw a similar price difference, so went in to the Apple store 100yds away and asked them why I should pay the difference. They reduced the price to match JL.
Having been the user of a few Apple products over the years I can honestly say that the support/service you get (if you have an issue) is worth the premium, but only time will tell if that works for you. I am very nervous spending that much money on a ‘gadget’ so like to have the potential ‘best’ support available.Posted 1 month ago | Go to post
Reply to: In a rut… help me read my way out..
Listen very carefully, I will say the only once….. 😉
It free. Starts at 9:00am Saturday every week. Volunteer a few times to see that the grade of running is generally between fast and walking and then start doing them. One of our locals lost 5 stone by starting Parkrun and she now feels fitter and happier than ever beforePosted 1 month ago | Go to post
I would vote for a trail centre as well to reduce the map reading element and also increase the chance of bike hire.
A slight twist would be the New Forest in Hampshire. There is a small Single Track circuit at Moors Valley Country Park which has bike hire onsite and about 15 miles of Fireroads as well as the official single track.
There are then two other big Bike Hire places just up the road in Burley and Brockenhurst and both sites have free route maps for different rides which are primarily Fire Road style of rides.
The new Forest is hardly extreme and (for some people) can be seen as very restrictive to off road cycling, but for a good long weekend break and a bit of an intro in to offload biking as its got some good options for accommodation, coffee/cake etc.
There is also the Purbecks a short drive away if you want some bigger slopes…Posted 1 month ago | Go to post
Reply to: Help! PS4 won’t connect to WiFi
Can you plug it in using a cable to test? That would potentially narrow down the issue.
If that works, try ‘deleting’ the ‘old’ network fro the PS4 so you can reconnect as if it was a new network.
Others with more direct experience will probably be along shortly, but at least thats a couple of things to try….Posted 1 month ago | Go to post
Reply to: Child Benefit Tax
@tthew Mostly true, but Child benefit is about £83 every four weeks so there is 13 payments a year totalling about £1100 per annum.
In other news; The other ‘unfair’ bit about the way the legislation is enforced/worded is that you cannot backdate a claim. If you are earning more than £60k at the start of the tax year and cancel the payment, but later get made redundant and end up earning less than £60K, you cant claim it back. However, HMRC can revisit any payments for 10 years.
My accountant gets me to claim child benefit and pay it back via my tax code, but HMRC get this bit wrong every year (we are borderline eligible and I have been expecting to be made redundant for some time).
As above, our friends earn more than us as a household, but claim it every year.
Its a rubbish system for many reasons.Posted 2 months ago | Go to post
Thats the kind of real world experience I was hoping to get.
If they get confiscated then fine. I am not trying to prove anything.
I will try the ‘hotel’ first and then hope for the best.
Obviously I have taken note of the * 🙂Posted 3 months ago | Go to post
Left luggage at the hotel where I am staying is an option…except I am not returning here and don’t have a ‘spare’ bag to leave behind. However, it is seriously close to the Eurostar so maybe I can leave a carrier bag with dirty clothes and my multitool behind 😀
My last two trips were out and back in a day so I just left this sort of stuff behind, but I don’t remember any airport style security….Posted 3 months ago | Go to post
Look on strava for “Breamore Road Up”
That trail goes up past the front door of the main house and then keeps going up over the hill and then down a nice decent (lots of nettles at the wrong time of year). This then meets one of the old Crofters droves so if you then turn right I think you are heading straight towards Salisbury.Posted 3 months ago | Go to post
Just remembered that the bike hire place has some routes from Brockenhurst that might helpPosted 3 months ago | Go to post
There are lots of options through the forest, but you may find yourself struggling a bit to navigate them all as the Fc and NFDC try to keep cycling to set paths and telling one fire road junction from another can be time consuming
One option would be to try and use the old Railway line that finishes near Burley. It is just under 10 miles in total and is easy to follow. Unfortunately it may not go North enough for youPosted 3 months ago | Go to post
Don’t panic, there is a thing called google that has the answer if you don’t want to click the link above 😉Posted 3 months ago | Go to post
Reply to: I hate my life 😔
Sorry to hear this. You have been inspirational to me and I believe you can get through this.
Re; the Gym and getting your son volunteering as mentioned above, can you combine to two and start getting the family to your local Saturday morning Parkrun?
Its free, regular and has a current push to be less ‘runny’ (tail runners are now called tail walkers and some people at our event take over an hour to get round with zero pressure from the volunteers to go faster)
Every week our local one needs volunteers and the jobs are simple, but the ‘Parkrun family’ can be very supportive and friendly.
There is even a junior version on Sundays which is shorter and obviously designed for family groups, but they are not at every location.
Good luck and keep ‘talking’ on herePosted 3 months ago | Go to post
Reply to: Vegetarian Roast Potatoes
I’m not vegetarian, but I can’t imagine there is not another way to get ‘extra’ flavour in to a roast potato.
That said, if the outside is crispy and the inside is ‘smooth’ I just enjoy them anyway, I don’t need extra flavour 🙂
EDIT Kinda like wot he said abovePosted 3 months ago | Go to post
Reply to: Kids and “extra tuition”.
Slight hijack, but how do people find tutors?
We found a Maths one based on a postcard in the local shop, but can’t find an English one. We asked the school and the teacher was against private tutors so just gave us a lecture about not letting the tutor do the homework!Posted 3 months ago | Go to post
Reply to: Mac people: AV?
Our IT ‘bod’ (we are too small for a department) is happy for the Mac users not to use AV, but we get regular Phishing email updates from him as it seems the Mac users are a bit more willing to believe any email they receive.
In fairness they are the ones talking to the majority of external people as Macs are for ‘customer facing’ people in our organisation, so its is slightly understandable.Posted 3 months ago | Go to post

Try as you might you will not find any mountains in Dorset, but there are some hills leaving to cliffs overlooking the sea so exposure is possible 😉
There is obviously there lots of heathland and plenty of forest as well so the mix is there…. Try looking for the DRR Jurassic GPX files as well as that has 3-4000 feet of climbing (depending on the year), and a nice mix of single track, double track, heathland, views etc
Puddletown and <ahref=”http://www.okefordhillbikepark.co.uk”>http://www.okefordhillbikepark.co.uk (plus other smaller unofficial spots) are also there if you want to defeat gravity….Posted 5 months ago | Go to post
Dorset Rough Riders do a ride from Oakford Fitzpane each autumn. They normally publish the previous years GPX files, but as I don’t have the tech I don’t have a link for you. Hopefully it is somewhere on their website or facebook page.Posted 5 months ago | Go to post
Reply to: Lost passport.
If it is any consolation (it probably isn’t) in the last two weeks I have seen/heard of two others in a similar situation. The first was an American on a coach tour of the Normandy Beaches trying to get the last hotel he stayed in to forward the contents of his safe (including passports and credit cards) to the next hotel he was going to….. It was not going well.
Then two nights ago in Reims, a haggard looking farther of two upset kids was trying to get the hotel receptionist to explain the someone on the phone that he had hidden (and then left behind) all of the family passports inside a zipped cushion in his last hotel room. The problem seemed to be that the room had been cleaned and was now occupied by new guests and the previous hotel were reluctant to knock on their door late at night……
The mantra in our family is at the start of each leg of the journey we say “tickets, passports, Money?” as we check each in turn….Posted 5 months ago | Go to post
Reply to: Hi, any New Forest Gravel riders here
I will echo the above, the officially sanctioned routes in the NF exclude some large long Fire-roads, I think there is something like 100 miles of approved cycleways and some of them you can’t officially ride to/from both ends :-/
I have only seen one upset verderer and he did not get the irony of getting out of his Land Rover to accuse a small groups of cyclists of irresponsible cycling causing erosion :-/
You don’t say where you are in the forest, Cafe Velo is at the West side, there is another Cycling orientated cafe in Lyndhurst that might do some organised rides and the Newforse MTB club do rides all over the forest, but seem to gravitate to the north east of the forest.
If you don’t already know it, there is a nice ridge ride between Frogham and Fritham that goes through the Ashley bombing ranges from WW2. Google for more info on the ‘submarine penn’ miles from any water! 🙂Posted 6 months ago | Go to post
