Eurobike 2016: Gilles Berthoud

by 0

Our man Jon Woodroof took me over to the Gilles Berthoud stand at Eurobike week before last, and I immediately started to drool as I looked around. It’s often the little things that make the biggest impression, and that’s certainly the case with the products offered by this French outfit. There’s a lot of handcrafting going on by these guys, and it’s the kind of stuff that bike geeks around the world would be into.
Let’s just have a look at some of the bits on offer from Gilles Berthoud, with a little explanation for each one.

Gilles Berthoud uses a CNC machine to cut the leather for its saddles. Unafraid to use modern bits, this beautiful saddle bag uses the a KlickFix mount.

Behold the elegant collar for the leather cover. They’re smooth, beautiful and completely replaceable.

Of course I fell in love with this beautiful magazine pannier. And, yes, it was made specifically to carry magazines.

Unique tool bag.

Aside from the sexy steel frame, check out the thought that went into these cable stops.

More thoughtful detail. Forget spinning boring old electrical tape around your freshly wrapped bars. How about a carefully machined fastener that sits flush against the tape?

In more bar tape news, aside from the lovely leather wrap, this might be the only mirror I’d ever fasten to my bike. Fully articulated and adjustable, it serves another purpose: it’s a bar end!

While fondling the bicycle goodness in the booth, I was told about the Concourse de Machines event, which took place in France in early July. It seems like it’s an event that combines elements of a handmade bicycle show, a three-stage gravel ride and all-around rad funness. It’s co-sponsored by 200 magazine, which might explain the aforementioned magazine carrier. The event was last held 67 years ago, but if there’s another one next year, we’ll be sure to be there!
