SRAM HydroHC – The best of both worlds?

by 2

SRAM have been offering hydraulic disc brakes as part of their drop-bar line up for a number of years now. While the debate still rages about the need for them on the road (and their safety in the peloton), they are now a mainstay of ‘cross, even in the pro ranks.

So, when SRAM unveiled their eTap wireless electronic road shifting last year, while it might have left roadies giddy at the new tech, us off-roaders had less to cheer as it was only offered with a road rim brake option.
In steps SRAM HydroHC. Available as an option for the top-end SRAM Red eTap groupset, it combines wireless electronic shifting with hydraulic disc brakes. Looking at the information released at the moment, the braking builds on SRAM’s current drop bar range, but also brings in bite-point adjust, as found on their mountain bike stoppers as well as easier bleeding.

The brakes will be available in either post or flat mount, and available from October 2016. We have limited other details at the moment, other than that the formal launch will be at Eurobike in August. Pricing will be revealed then as well.

Realistically, it’s likely that the main drive for this technology has come from SRAM’s road product requirements. Despite the hiccups this year, it seems likely that disc brakes will make their way into the peloton over time, and it is a rapidly growing consumer market. That’s not to say it won’t potentially benefit us, and we can’t wait to try out the groupset when it hits.

In the meantime, here’s the full marketing hyperbole from SRAM:
