Bowie. Patron of the staff of a complete genesis, undeniably. This undertaking of ours, the cycling, the reason you’ll read this if you do, seems far from music to an outsider. WE know differently. We know that the lonely roads bring about a melody if you haven’t brought one yourself. We’ve all been Major Tom a time or two or more: strung out, wrecked, desolate, gazing with desperation at the world we left behind. Before we set to road/path/trail, we’ve been the heroes. We’ve smelled the flesh of every metaphor he drafted, and we seek opportunities to repeat it. When the ride is over or happening or about to, as we loosen or tighten straps or buckles or our grip on the bar there is a thing he has said that can bolster our courage, blanket our pain with a greater perspective, or fool our fears away. Artists, athletes, scientists – as much as his inspiration has helped us live, it’ll help him live forever. Bowie.
