The incorrect use is pretty bad these days.

    Hmmmm

    Do you mean

“The incorrect usage of these words is ibecoming more frequent” ? 😉

Unless you are saying using them incorrectly has become more of a sin?
And I think usage is better than use as a noun in your sentence…

    I agree.

Although it’s surprising how touchy some people can get when you politely point out their erroneous statement.

    Yes yes, I know. (-:

Generally I type how I speak. For example, “owt” and “nowt” aren’t correct English, but they creep into my typing sometimes. So, I’d like to attribute that one to colloquial language rather than ignorance if I may.

I don’t profess to having perfect language skills, point is that I wouldn’t write a half-storey banner sign with the same abandon that I’d write a post on a forum.

You’ve got to be kidding. Of all the worlds trouble and strife, the odd spelling mistake “makes your blood boil”. You’ve obviously got little else to worry about. 😕

    Where to start? 😉

    In summary;

    1) no space before the ?

    2) capital ‘w’ for Was.

    3) ‘Yore’ – Yaw is what aeroplanes and helicopters have.

    4) full stop at the end.

Of all the worlds trouble and strife, the odd spelling mistake “makes your blood boil”. You’ve obviously got little else to worry about.

But surely that’s the whole point ?

There is enough misery in the world without plying on further misery with the incorrect application of your and you’re.

    It makes me thoroughly depressed.

    🙁

I think you should, especially if you’ve got any pride. It’s quite sad when people thinnk it’s cool to demonstrate how badly educated they are.

For myself it’s a question of professional pride, what with me being an English teacher an’ all.

Incidentally, this forum will not let you say ‘Summ-at’ (without the dash…) as in when you say,’I want a cup of tea or summ-at’, It auto-corrects it to ‘Something’.. Highly annoying when one is trying to use colloak culloqu colloquie ways that regional people speak.

    Look, I’ll do it now… – something

I have no idea ernesto, people definitely appear to be quite proud if it, especially if they can’t be ar5ed improve and react against corrections so strongly.
The Americanisation of the language would indicate an element of coolness too.

I haven’t got time to slow down. Double-dip recession, people using your and you’re in the wrong context ….. too many issues to sort out and too little time.

You should have put “your” and “you’re” in quotes.

I blame modern technology for all of these problems. The younger generation are encouraged to use short cuts in communication by SMS, Twitter etc.

You should have put “your” and “you’re” in quotes.

    Why ? I wasn’t quoting anyone.

Besides, I don’t like using quotation marks on my keyboard, they are incorrect – I like to have my 66 in the front and my 99 in the back. I blame falling standards and the nanny state.

Good example of a Brain Study: If you can read this you have a strong mind:

In this day and age if people can understand what’s written then it probably doesn’t really matter about spelling, grammar and punctuation. Having said that, I’m a pedant and think that spelling, punctuation and grammar is important 🙂

i agree…. it’s one of the easier grammatic rules to understand.

    standards are slipping on STW.

one of the things that make it readable for me is the higher standard of written english compared to other sites.

Alpin, please start your sentences with a capital letter. Also, please ensure you use a capital letter to denote the proper name of the English language in future.

    C-
