Chap who lives near me has just bought one and its flippin lovely. With the optional Ceramic brakes I think it was a fair bit over the 100k, but it sounds mega. He does have a rubbish bike though….

I’ve got an M6 (the older V10 version), when it works its (in my opinion) the bee’s doo-dahs. However, it doesn’t work very often and costs a fortune to fix. It also doesn’t have the ability to carry a bike (no folding rear seats and carbon roof means no roof rack). It also does 9mpg on a good day, less if you give it some hammer. All of which is why I also have a derv Golf, which is rubbish and breaks more than the BMW….

You can buy a house in Lancashire for under 10 grand, so it’s not saying much…

Fella up from me has a 6 and a 3. Gorgeous machines but utterly nuts to run. I had one for 2 weeks while my rs4 was being repaired and while beautiful and fast it was heavy, didn’t handle that well and drank like a very dry man in the desert reaching an oasis, BP got to know me well. I’d have one though ! Previous model you have to take engine out to replace plugs FFs !

Funny, I thought P-Jay couldn’t have been further from the truth of the matter. People buy RS6’s and RS4’s because they look like normal cars and don’t want to be judged driving Ferraris etc. Its below the radar supercar performance.

If I had enough money to justify it I’ve have one. If I had enough money to cover anything going wrong in a 2nd hand one I’d have a second hand one (or an E63 or M5)

When considering the running costs, let’s be fair. A house costs a lot to run, and you can sleep in the boot of the RS6.

I probably wouldn’t buy one (not unless I had silly amounts of money) but most of the downsides aren’t really. Poor fuel economy – well OK I’ll cycle places more (And let’s be fair, the quoted fuel economy is pretty impressive for a car with that level of performance – you’d be looking at a similar ball park figure out of a camper van and no one would judge you as an earth murderer for that). Leather seats and frightened of spilling things on them – much as I wouldn’t choose leather (vegetarian) I had a car with full leather, and child vomit and food came out of it no problem, unlike cloth interiors where I have to apply my don’t give a crap filter.

In terms of it not handling well on track, fine, it won’t be as nice as a lightweight sports car on track. It’ll be a lot more practical on the road though. And you can exercise your children’s neck muscles.

Not a lot. There’s the AMG CLS Shooting Brake, Jag XF RS and Porsche are bringing out the Panmera Superturismo but that’s about it. Audi have the super estate thing covered. The new M5 is lovely but no estate version yet.

The whole “you could buy a house for that” argument is a bit redundant when the clock option in a Bentley Bentayga is £115,000. So if you’ve got £275,000 to fritter you could buy a Bentley and an RS6, or a Bentley with optional solid gold clock. And that’s just chump change compared to the upper end of the Bugatti, Ferrari, McLaren, RR catalogue.

Total, since 1991: £100, £400, £400, £700, £650, £650, £200. So, about £3k. Minus about £300 from selling one, plus about £300 above the insurance payout replacing one that was nicked.

So no way would I want an expensive ‘thing’ of a car when there’s some proper fun to be had in this world, if cars were to float my boat.

Wait around 3 years and one of these could be had for £50k, or you could buy a 2-3 year old RS4 for £30k, roughly the same price as a reasonably species up new Mondeo.

Having only last week watched someone trying to get their Lamborghini over a series of speed bumps (in the sort of place in Lancashire where you could buy the alternative house) I’d say that this would be of considerably more use to you than one of them. Unless you live in Monaco.

A nice boring comfy shopper/commuter with disposable doors for the supermarket car park and alloys because my wife will also drive it; a dirty old landy for bikes, tip runs and boys adventures; and a stupidly light and small silly thing for the weekends (elise/caterham/atom). Nothing on my list is great for crossing continents…….but I don’t cross continents as a rule.

Each to their own but it wouldn’t be for me (first world problem alert) since it’s isn’t easy to fit or insure one with a towbar (no bike rack on the back 🙁 ).

I don’t particularly see what the issue with this form of spending compared to spending huge amounts on a home or even more so second home. I guess it’s just more visible consumption. I’d also agree that this country is growing more disequal which will be a huge issue for generations.

Or how about by people who need a car to cart around the family, dog and a couple of mountain bikes but would also like to drive something thats fast, rare and capable (talking about the RS Avants here). Granted for the same money they could buy a Range Rover but perhaps they like to drive the thing and hate the whole blingy footballers wives image that buying an SUV entails.

I reckon there are people who spend as much on a bike as I do on a car. Who cares? Better to spend it and keep someone in employment than stick it under the pillow.
