The GNR version was way, way better….

Has to be La Bassey, shirley? (ahem) Diamonds are Forever gets the nod, just.

Special mention for Chris Cornell, though. #pipes

The main, John Barry, jangly guitar followed by massive orchestra blast kicks the musical shit out of any of the ‘other’ themes.

    The Spy Who Loved Me

Love Chris Cornell but that wasn’t a great Bond theme.

I would also say it’s the worst song Chris Cornell’s ever done.

    For me it’s this

Recent – Skyfall (traditional Bond in a modern way)

    Proper old – Louis Armstrong.

Middle ones – Live and Let Die or View to a Kill

    Not: license to kilt

    Goldfinger-
    Skyfall-
both classics in the Bond theme.
Personal favourite is Nancy Sinatra, You only live twice.

I didn’t mind Skyfall, but it has lazy lyrics, rhyming Skyfall with Crumbles by mashing it up was jarring to me.

I liked the last one too, I don’t usually like Sam Smith but I liked that.

But my favourite modern one is probably Alicia Keys and Jack White, but I seem to be the only one.

Best of all time for me… got to be Goldfinger, I’ll always have a soft spot for ‘our Shirley’ being a descendant of Cardiff Docks stock and it’s a belter of a tune – sleazy horns and what a voice Adele is fantastic, but she’s no Shirley Bassey.

View To A Kill is awful.
Simon Le Bon sounds like a sheep being strangled with an elastic band.

Totally torn between diamonds are forever and the great satchmo

Both spent seasons performing at the famous Batley variety club, apparently Shirley Bassey was the only act that the bar ever stopped serving during

Always thought that this sounded the most James Bond-y, despite being in one of the least James Bond-y films!

    Are you on glue?

The first time I heard it was on Graham Norton (yeah, yeah, I know), and it was absolutley godawful. Maybe it’s just not great live I thought, but heard it during the film and thought it was shite then too. Whiney piffle, basically. It’s not a bad song, just a terrible rendition.

One of the guests on the couch on Graham Norton said how great it was, and made some comment along the lines of ‘who else could have performed that so well?’ and jokingly suggested Metallica. Which made me think that James Hetfield could have done a much better job, he’s a pretty handy crooner and can obviously handle the ‘big set o’ lungs’ parts too.

Anyway, the correct answer is a tie between Goldfinger and View to a Kill.

    It really wasn’t.

+1 for the Chris Cornell shouts, although I appreciate thatfans of Soundgarden and Audioslave might not number it amongst his greatest works. +1 too for Propellerheads being the greatest that never was.

Carly Simon with an honorable mention for Chris Cornell.

A-Ha and Duran Duran should be ashamed of their efforts.

Just remembered how awful the Tom Jones one was. My vote for Live and Let Die, and not the GnR version.

Live And Let Die is definitely up there, and Macca’s original is awesome.

That Live & Let Die thing by Paul McCartney is dross. The definition of mundane, middle of the road rubbish he churns out along with the other usual suspects like Sting, U2 etc. GNR version much, much better.

Anyway, the answer is the Jack White/Alicia Keys one.
