Hi im looking for a lightweight Xc/light trail use wheelset for my anthem x it has a 15qr on the front i won’t be useing them for the peaks /rougher riding as I’ll use my old set for that an fully kitted out with full back pack coat etc i come in around 79kg. ….. Ive so far found stans 3.30 hubs with crestrims 32 revo spokes an alloy nipples hopes offering is the Xc 6 pro 3 with 28 spokes an crest Rims both weigh around 1450gms an both cost around £330/370 quid any one any experiance of any of these im especially keen on hearing about the stans 3.30 an any one useing revo spokes as Ive not found as much info on these as i have the hopes. …. Also any other offerings out there at a similar weight/price Ive missed. Any info appreciated!

A friend had some Stans hubs and used them for 3 wet xc races before the bearings went. I had a 29er set that I’d never used so moved them on in favour of Hope again. Slightly heavier though

What an where do i get strada from id Google it but im at work atm an on my phone never herd of them ill check the American classics out later, with the stans hubs once the bearings areknackered would fitting better quality bearings solve the issue or are they poorly sealed? An when you refer to hope hoops are you meaning the xc6s or the more common pro two?

hope hoops refers to factory built hopes, so both xc6 and pro2’s are both hope hoops.

I run a 24hole crest XC6 front and 32 hole crest pro2 straightpull rear. Cracking wheels, nice and light, easy to run tubeless. I’m about 70kg unladen and they are still straight.

I have 2 pairs of wheels using stan’s crest rims.

Hope Hoops with evo straight pull hubs

    Stan’s wheels with 3.30 hubs.

As above, sealing of stan’s hubs is not very good and have had to replace bearings once and second time top up the grease. Hopes have been fine.
Also, found that the 15mm end caps for the 3.30 hubs did not fit very well and are always falling out when the wheel is off the bike.

Anyone know the weight of the 32sp hope? Any reason other than reliability for running it on the rear? the American classics look great but sold out an at least 100quid more anywhere else! As to are the stradas a little out my price range!! Shame about the stans they would of been my first choice but hopes build an quality look a slightly better option

I’ve got Superstar built wheels, which I’ve been really pleased with. Some people have reported problems with their build quality, but not me.

I am 12st found XC6 too flexy. 24 spokes are not enough IMO and they are DT rev’s. Liked them but wouldnt buy again. Kept snapping spokes and spokes are nightmare to get (most shops will order them from hope but non standard length made for hope)

Just my opinion but for general riding I would steer clear.

A few friends I race with use the hope xc3 wheels and all have had problems with spoke failure and or losing tension

My 3.30ti hubs and stans mmx rims have been just perfect but ive not used them much in the wet yet

I’ve got the Pro3 SP6 on Crests on my Anthem. They are very light, but also a bit flexy. I think I paid a tad over £300 at Merlin when they had one of their offers on, so I’d certainly rate them as great value. Only had them a few months, but they seem to be doing OK.

i live quite near to where superstar components are based id love to support a local(ish) company i do like the look of there hubs/wheels i was tempted by a set but have herd so many mixed reviews (poor builds poor quality true or not ive lost my faith) its managed to put me off i even considered buying a set then sending them off to get them checked with a wheel builder they would still work out a good price but the superlegra hub requires a tool to fully service them i believe and i believe its difficult to get hold of , just a bit to much of a risk for me
these xc3 spoke failures are they front or rear wheels that normally go? (or both) the idea of a pro 3 front an pro2 rear is something i never considered but does seem like a viable option if it would prevent spoke faliure.

back onto the 3.30 hubs can anything be done to improve the bearing life? like coating the outside of the bearing with grease regularly to prevent muck an watter getting in ? im pretty good with serviceing my bike id be happy to slap some grease on now an then ….. just not into stripping things all the time

any one know of any more places in the uk that do bargain american classics?

thanks for all your advice so far!

The main problem Ive found when looking for hand built wheels by specialist wheel builders is price Altho i know I’ll end up with a wheel thats probably had bit more care an attention in most of the recommendations for my use involves a crest rim an hope hub failing that a stans hub or American classic all which can be built up from factory at a cut price

both front and rear. More concerned at front ones going given the (lack of) abuse they get

that’s a shame about the xc3/6 hopes as they seem like a great value wheel although im fairly easy on my wheels id like something a little more certain, im still not put off by the stans, id like to hear a few more good things about them first before i made my mind up though, anyone else with any experiences on the ztr/3.30 hub?

but its looking like i may have to spend a little more money to get exactly what im after, i think if i had a 32h pro2/crest with revolution spokes an alloy nipples, they’ll be slightly heavier than the stans built up wheel(as the hub if heavier) offering but shouldn’t be too far off the xc6’s as they come with brass nipples and heavier spokes

I’ve got XC3’s that have been to hell and back under a lardy ass.

True, they are a bit flexy. But bespite dinging the rims to hell – I’ve never broken a spoke. They got rebuilt by a lbs with new rims and spokes after 2 years. Still going strong (also you get spare spokes in the box with them).

btw – Im far far from a weight weenie I just got them as they were in some super special deal. IIRC they weighed <1.5kg incl rotors.

If these eventually die: would I buy them again- probably not unless I got a cracking deal.
